Bekmambetov’s ‘Squirrels’ To Ravage Croisette
Red Sea Media has boarded sales on the Timur Bekmambetov produced horror thriller Squirrels. The script is by Daniel Antoniazzi and Ben Shiffrin, based on an idea by Bekmambetov about a young man who returns home to uncover the mystery behind his father’s death only to find a pack of flesh-eating squirrels hellbent on destroying everything in their path. Lisa Ellzey and Michele Wolkoff are executive producers. A director and cast are being set.

Rose McGowan, Peter Bogdanovich Movie ‘The Tell Tale Heart’ Sets Sales Co.
Darclight Films will screen footage of John La Tier’s The Tell Tale Heart starring Rose McGowan, Peter Bogdanovich and Patrick John Flueger. Based on the Edgar Allen Poe short story, the film’s action is transferred to modern-day New Orleans where a man is tormented by the still-beating heart of the old man he murdered and buried beneath the floorboards. The film adds a haunting romance to the mix. Producer is Daniel Zirilli via Popart Film Factory and Leverage Entertainment.

Guns N’ Roses Doc Heads To Cannes Market
Vision Films has acquired worldwide rights to former Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan’s auto-biographical documentary, It’s So Easy And Other Lies. The film traces McKagan’s rise with the band and how the rocker lifestyle caught up with him until he was able to overcome addiction. It’s written and directed by Christopher Duddy. McKagan, Duddy and Rainstorm Entertainment’s Steven G. Kaplan are producing with Daniel Zirilli, Joe Mundo and and Kati Thomson exec producing. The film features exclusive archive footage of McKagan’s early days with original Guns N’ Roses members Slash, Steve Adler, Izzy Stradlin and Axl Rose, as well as Gilby Clarke and Matt Sorum, and contemporaries like Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready, Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic and Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx.

John Kochman Joins Cohen Media Group
Former Studiocanal and Unifrance exec John Kochman has joined the acquisitions team of distributor Cohen Media Group. Kochman is a longtime international sales exec who lived in Paris for 16 years with posts at MK2 and Studiocanal. He moved back to New York in 2006 to head up the U.S. arm of Unifrance, the French industry’s film export body. Cohen recently acquired Vogue documentary Mademoiselle C, Drake Doremus’ Breathe In and Catherine Deneuve-starrer Elle S’En Va. Upcoming Cohen releases include Francois Ozon’s In The House, Spain’s Blancanieves and Ziad Doueiri’s The Attack.

Miranda Otto To Star In ‘Japanese Story’ Director’s Next
Fortissimo Films is launching sales on Driving Back From Dubbo, the latest film from Japanese Story director Sue Brooks. Miranda Otto and Richard Roxburgh are set to star with shooting to begin in early 2014 for a summer release in Oz via Palace Pictures. Described as a wry drama, the film sees the parents of a 15-year-old girl enlist an aging private detective to help find her after she runs away. Lizzette Atkins of Unicorn Films and Alison Tilson of Gecko Films are producing. Fortissimo’s Cannes slate also includes Competition title Borgman and Midnight Screening movie Monsoon Shootout.

108 Media Boards ‘The Time Being’
Suspense drama The Time Being stars Wes Bentley as a struggling artist and Frank Langella as his would-be benefactor. The directorial debut of Nenad Cicin-Sain debuted in Toronto last year and also features Sarah Paulson and Corey Stoll. Richard N. Gladstein co-rwrote and produced the film that 108 Media will sell in Cannes.

GFM To Handle India-Set ‘Prayer For Rain’
GFM Films has boarded worldwide sales on Bhopal: A Prayer For Rain by director Ravi Kumar. Martin Sheen, Mischa Barton, Kal Penn, Rajpal Yadav and Tannishtha Chatterjee star in the film that’s based on the true story of a a devastating pesticide leak in central India that killed thousands of people in 1984. It’s produced by Sahara One Media and Entertainment Ltd in association with Rising Star Entertainment Pvt Ltd.
