The sports network had been at the forefront of the TV technology, which might be part of the problem. ESPN 3D was one of the first such channels launched, offering extra-dimensional versions of high-profile games. But nobody was watching, and today the Associated Press reports that 3D broadcasts will halt by year’s end. Disney-owned ESPN cited lack of viewers — who need spendy 3D sets and glasses to view the channel’s content — but didn’t rule out a return to programming if the format re-resurges. According to IHS Screen, 2% of TVs in the U.S. could show 3D programming in 2012.
