In his fourth turn as Tony host NPH went “bigger” with a Mike Tyson cameo and a jab at Tom Hooper’s musical-on-film Oscar pic Les Miserables:

this should be a play..better number than any of the play performances…bravo.
And then again there are the Oscars.
Ah, if only they could learn from this.
But, then, they’re too OLD to learn anything.
It’s good, but “It’s Not Just For Gays Anymore” set a bar nothing else will ever reach.
A true entertainer!
I prefer my Tony opening numbers not to have a convicted rapist in them. But that’s just me.
Thank god someone said it, Davis. This is utterly disgusting.
Yeah! Nobody else in sports/show business has done anything as bad as MT was accused of in any part of Hollywood/New York/any sports venue in the country – that’s why they all deserve to work/be recognized and he doesn’t!! He’s the most horrible man on the planet!! OMG!! The horror of Broadway being sullied by an ex-con! How will us honorable showbiz folk/not plain ‘ol Americans hold our heads up? Imagine, having a black ex-con dancing on the Broadway stage! On primetime TV! The very idea!!
(Judgemental, biased idiots…)
GREAT opening number….who wrote it?
Tom Kitt and Lin-Manuel Miranda. And I thought it was amazing.
I like NPH but enough with him already. There are other people who could host. He seems the same every year, it wants some change. I hope they won`t invite him to host the Oscars as well.
Trolls need not apply. Unbelievable.
Simply amazing. I can’t even imagine the work that went into that. Good job, NPH! I think he’s ready for the Oscars.
He’s fantastic. That was impressive and entertaining as hell.
The Oscars would be lucky to have this guy. ABC needs to get over it and offer the man the job.
Wow! Give that man an Emmy.
Terrific entertainment. Great overall show.
…and let him host next years Oscar show!
I am keeping this one on the DVR to watch again.
Way to go NPH!
What an embarrasment. I didn’t go into acting to have the Tony’s sullied by the brick that is Mike Tyson. All those responsible should be disgusted by this public humiliation. No more Tyson’s, no more Lauper’s, just honor the actors you shits.
Many (including me) would agree that Tyson didn’t belong there; that he was glorified even briefly was a mistake. But Lauper is and always has been a powerful musician who connects with her audience, and now she’s a Tony-award winning composer. It’s the Tonys, not the SAG awards, for crying out loud. All those involved deserved to be honored.
right, that’s why you’re commenting here instead of acting
Yes, let’s not forget that without the writers, directors, costumers, stage managers, stage crew, sound designers, lighting designers, dressers, etc. you actors would be mumbling incoherently wandering in a circle in a dark alley. Think about all the other people that put in hard work, time and effort that make you look and sound good on stage before you suggest “Just honor the actors you shits.”
That was fantastic and the haters….well you know the rest. Best awards show opening I have ever seen-hands down. And get off MT’s jock-he did his time, leave him alone.
Why is he not invited to the host the Oscars?
He’s a host and performer than can do everything.
Amazing opening number. He deserved that long standing ovation.
NPH – MR. Showbiz.
An old school entertainer like we used to have in the olden days, with a full toolbox of everything – acting, singing, dancing and jumping through hoops.
AMAZING job babe. Beyond well done.
OUTSTANDING! This is what the Tony’s and Broadway is all about. To be displayed so entertaining is perfection. Wish is went on all night NPH just gets better and better, can’t wait for the Emmy’s. If you didn’t love and admire the opening number, you must not have had your TV on. I could watch it over and over. The producers, director, writers an players all deserve a round of applause (they already got a standing ovation). Fantastic Neal!
Fantastic! If the Oscar telecast were even half as entertaining as NPH’s opening number I might be inclined to watch it.
That disappearing act was phenomenal. 15 seconds to get from stage to back of the house. Very impressive.
Dear Ella, There are not many people could have performed that opening number the way NPH did last evening. HE WAS AMAZING!!! I would love to know who you think could replace him?
Hey Sherry, your comments about an ex convict participating in tony awards last night, was out of line .. You’re a part of the ‘Hollywood’ scene, wouldn’t you like to know how many criminals are still working there and are apart of all those Hollywood stars lives. If you have money in that ‘world’, your past crime live just goes away without any questions asked, and your given a second chance to live a life without anyone pointing a finger at you. Here’s a black man who is trying to correct his wrong doings by living a normal life with his new family, trying to make it in this unforgiving world and all you want to do is tear him down. Shame on you .. learn to encourage, not to discourage. How did you get your job anyway?? Guess you never had a past!!!!!
And sarcasm shoots right past you, doesn’t it? Please have someone read (decipher?) my post above to you slowly so he or she can explain to you what was really being said in my DEFENSE of Mike Tyson……
Stay in school, sweetie…
The opening number was easily the best part of the show–for me, Mike Tyson’s cameo was probably my favorite moment. He DID have a show run briefly on Broadway and his awkward cameo was HILARIOUS.
It was yet more evidence that the former boxer has turned both himself and his life around, and is able to poke fun at and not take himself too seriously. Unlike a Chris Brown, Tyson has CLEARLY undergone a serious metamorphosis, so it seems unfair to bring up his past (especially considering that in this country’s biased “justice” system, a conviction does not necessarily mean that the accused is guilty).
Lay off Tyson, folks. The man has done a 180 from where he used to be and is having the time of his life. And I’m having fun watching him.
That was a truly amazing opening number….. NPH is the dude….
Best opening number EVER for an awards show!
