LOS ANGELES (July 9) – This morning, the Black List announced that it will host the inaugural Black List Screenwriters Lab from September 30-October 5, 2013, inviting six nonprofessional screenwriters to an all-expense paid screenwriting workshop with four screenwriting mentors including already confirmed Billy Ray (HUNGER GAMES, CAPTAIN PHILLIPS) and Kiwi Smith (LEGALLY BLONDE, the upcoming EXPENDABELLES). Scott Myers, host and founder of Go Into The Story, the Black List’s official screenwriting blog, will serve as an additional mentor.

Mentors and writers will be hosted by the Las Vegas Downtown Project, founded by Zappos.com CEO Tony Hsieh, as part of a broader initiative to cultivate a writing community in the heart of Las Vegas called Writing Downtown.

“There’s a lot to be excited about here. This is really a continuation of the educational work we’ve been doing with Scott Myers’s blog Go Into The Story and our online community the Black Board. Six writers are going to have the opportunity to workshop their script at an extremely high level and get an education on working as a professional screenwriter from our extraordinary mentors and guests we’ll invite throughout the week. Plus they’ll get to have this experience within the almost unbelievable revitalization effort that Tony and the Downtown Project have achieved and continue to achieve in Las Vegas. For us, September 30 can’t come soon enough,” said Franklin Leonard, founder and CEO of the Black List.

Fifteen writers will be invited, based on the strength of their scripts as evaluated by the Black List website, to submit a one-page personal statement. From those personal statements, Lab mentors and the Black List will choose six writers to participate. Writers may opt into consideration by uploading a screenplay to the Black List website and confirming that they have not earned more than $25K in aggregate for their film or televi sion writing to date. Script evaluations ordered on or before July 31 will be guaranteed consideration.
