No one in LA could watch off-hours local TV without seeing Cal Worthington‘s ads for his car dealerships. The man who saturated local airwaves for decades accompanied by his “dog” Spot — maybe a gorilla, tiger, skunk or elephant but never a canine — died Sunday at his ranch near Chico, CA. He was 92. His ads were a boon for local TV stations, especially during the medium’s early days. Worthington, a World War II Army Air Corp veteran who came to California from Texas in the late ’40s, combined his cowboy hat and homespun manner with songs featuring banjo music, “Go See Cal” choruses and promises that he’d stand on his head or eat a bug to make a deal.
