Sony Pictures got a rousing ovation when it premiered the Paul Greengrass-directed Captain Phillips as the New York Film Festival’s opening night film last Friday. The bullish studio will now try to build some extra buzz by sneaking the film on 800 screens this Saturday, Deadline has learned. The Tom Hanks-starrer opens wide on Friday, October 11. The film dramatizes the hijacking of the cargo ship Maersk Alabama by a group of Somali pirates. I saw the film at its NYFF bow and Greengrass’s hyperkinetic shooting style conveys the desperation of the pirates and the horror felt by the unarmed crew and a captain who ends up alone with the gunman in a tiny lifeboat while awaiting help from a Navy SEAL Team.
