It’s been a turbulent last few months in cable with a lot of top executive changes at E!, Tru TV, We TV, VH1, HBO and Logo. Now Scripps’ Travel Channel is joining the list with the departure of president Laureen Ong, which was announced today. She will be stepping down at the end of the month after a three-year stint. “I feel my mission at Travel Channel is complete,” Ong said. “I came here to help transition Travel Channel into the Scripps family of lifestyle brands, put together a great leadership and creative team, and position the network for unprecedented growth,” adding that those objectives have been accomplished. During Ong’s tenure, Travel Channel has expanded its programming schedule, with more than a dozen returning series this year, including franchises Hotel Impossible, Monumental Mysteries and Airport 24/7: Miami, which were launched on her watch. In the most recent third quarter, Travel Channel averaged 970,000 viewers in primetime, down 7% from last year. While a successor is being found, Burton Jablin, president of the Scripps Networks operating division, will oversee Travel Channel’s operations and development on an interim basis. Ong previously was the founding president of the National Geographic Channel.
