EXCLUSIVE: Bestselling novelist Patricia Cornwell, best known for her Kay Scarpetta series, is behind another crime franchise with a strong female character at the center, this time for TV. ABC has put in development Greta Stone, a drama project based on an original idea by Cornwell. Co-written by Cornwell and Law & Order alumna Stephanie Sengupta, Greta Stone centers on a young, orphaned, highly skilled female cop who is has an uncanny ability to solve crime. Cornwell and Sengupta executive produce with Matt Gross who most recently exec produced another ABC crime procedural with a female lead, Body Of Proof.
ABC Studios and Gross’ studio-based Gross Entertainment are producing. Cornwell’s previous direct-to-TV effort, the two-hour pilot AFT starring Amy Brenneman and Kathy Baker, also was for ABC, which aired it as an original movie. She is with ICM Partners, which also reps Gross. Sengupta, who co-created the CW’s new drama Reign, is with WME and Gendler & Kelly.
