UPDATE, 12:16 AM PT: Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity scored 11 EE Baftanominations from the British Academy this morning including Best Film, Best British Film, Best Director and Leading Actress for Sandra Bullock. It led the pack of movies recognized by BAFTA and is followed by 12 Years A Slave and American Hustle with 10 nods each across the major categories. Captain Phillips drew nine mentions; Behind The Candelabra – released theatrically in the UK – has five, as does Saving Mr Banks. The latter film has underperformed at the British box office, but it clearly found a mark with voters. It world premiered in London and both of its stars, Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson, recently made a point of GRAVITYstopping by BAFTA for lengthy sit-downs and a look back at their careers. Thompson is nominated in the Leading Actress category for the film and Hanks is also a Leading Actor candidate, although he’s up for Captain Phillips which is also a Best Film contender. But back to Gravity: It’s also vying in the original screenplay, original music, cinematography, editing, production design, sound and special visual effects races. Notably, Gravity is nominated as both Best Film and Best British Film, something I expected might happen. The same thing goes for Philomena which scored four nominations, and, like Gravity, was a Venice world premiere. Last year, only Les Misérables crossed into both BAFTA categories, (though it won neither). Philomena also turned up in the Best Actress race with Judi Dench and on the Adapted Screenplay list with Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope. Other films scoring multiple mentions include The Wolf Of Wall Street (Director, Actor, Editing, Adapted Screenplay) and Rush (Best British Film, Supporting Actor, Editing, Sound). The BAFTAs will be held on February 16th in London. See below for the full list of nominees.

PREVIOUS: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts is announcing its film nominations this morning in London, while Oscar ballots are due today in LA. There are 275 movies eligible for prizes this year. Notably, BAFTA tweaked its Outstanding British Film category for the 2013 crop, adding a sixth nominee which will act as a sort of wildcard entry. All other BAFTA award fields have five nominees each. The reasoning for boosting the Brit film race was to “ensure that this important category fully celebrates the outstanding range of British films in our cinemas each year,” the Academy’s Nik Powell said when the addition was announced in July. Five of the movies are decided by chapter vote, but the sixth nomination is decided by a jury of filmmakers. Last year, Skyfall won the top British film prize, but was not nominated in the main category. Les Misérables, however, was nominated in both categories. Philomena is one that could straddle both this year as is Gravity. Away we go:
