JC_MILLS__HeadshotEXCLUSIVE: In show business, many start as agents before segueing to a career in the executive ranks. J.C. Mills is taking the opposite route, joining ICM Partners‘ International Television and Media Department in New York today. He is expected to be focused on non-scripted but also cover other aspects of the international TV marketplace. Mills comes from National Geographic Channel where he spent the past two years as a development executive, shepherding unscripted pilots, specials and series and working with oversees producers on international formats. Before joining Nat Geo in January 2012, Mills was VP Acquisitions & Business Development, North America for Zodiak Rights and prior to that was a sales executive at Shine International in the UK. In the agenting ranks, Mills joins his wife, Ashley Davis Mills, who is a New York-based TV agent at rival CAA. Here’s the official release announcing his hire that ICM Partners just sent out:

Mills, former Director of Development for National Geographic Channel, will join the agency’s International Television and Media Department led by Greg Lipstone. Mills will be based in the agency’s New York office and will begin his appointment as an agent this week.

“In the past few years, we’ve had the great pleasure of working with J.C. in his role as a development executive,” said Lipstone, a partner at ICM Partners. “As we know firsthand, he cultivates strong relationships within the community and expertly shepherds projects from ideas to fully formed television series. Those characteristics will ensure a quick and smooth transition to the agency business. His international experience and creative background will make him a valuable asset to our team as the department continues to expand.”

Stated Mills, “I’m incredibly excited to join the amazing team that Greg has put together and develop with their prolific roster of clients. It’s a little-known fact that I began my career with the intention of becoming an agent. I’ve been on a long and rewarding journey that will undoubtedly benefit me in my new role at ICM Partners.”

At National Geographic Channel, Mills oversaw the development of pilots, specials and series and served as the primary liaison for European producers and international formats. While at the network, he executive produced the upcoming series None of the Above and the special Cycling High: Doping to Win. He also oversaw the development of projects such as American Genius, Inside Underground Poker, Duck Quacks Don’t Echo and Lords of War. In addition to his role at National Geographic Channel, Mills has served as Vice President of Acquisitions & Business Development, North America for Zodiak Rights and as a sales executive at Shine International in the UK.

Mills’ hire is the latest move in ICM Partners’ International Television and Media Department. The agency recently named Lori York a partner and promoted Patrick Feldman and Ryan Wackerman to agent in London and Los Angeles respectively.
