Locke Tom Hardy box officeThe weekend welcomed well over a half-dozen new Specialty releases, though most had tepid theatrical launches at best. A24‘s Locke was the sole exception, opening in several locations and grossing over $89K for a solid $22,302 theater average. The result is another feather in the cap for A24, coming on the heels of its Jonathan Glazer-directed feature starring Scarlett Johansson, Under the Skin, at the beginning of April. That film is the year’s 3rd highest opener in terms of averages among Specialties ($35K in 4 locations). Locke sold to virtually every territory ahead of last year’s AFM and had a healthy start in the U.K., opening recently. A24 touted its Locke roll out Sunday when reporting numbers: “Locke had the highest per screen average in the country this weekend opening at $89,210 on 4 screens in NY and LA. Steven Knight’s extraordinary film received rave reviews, particularly for Tom Hardy’s one-man tour-de-force performance that is already garnering awards buzz.” The distributor will move Locke into the top 50 markets on this side of the Atlantic in the coming weeks.

Specialty Box OfficeArgentina’s entry for Best Foreign Language Oscar consideration last year, The German Doctor, had the weekend’s second best PTA among newcomers. It grossed just over $35K in five theaters for a $7K theater average. “It’s a cool thriller keeps you on the edge of your seat,” said Peter Goldwyn this week about the title Goldwyn Films picked up out of Cannes last year. “[Writer-director Lucía Puenzo's] ability to keep this creeping monster in the room is extraordinary.” The German Doctor will expand into major cities throughout May.

Blue RuinRADiUS-TWC bowed fellow Cannes ’13 title Blue Ruin in 7 theaters in addition to a VOD/digital opening this weekend. Blue Ruin, written and directed by Jeremy Saulnier, grossed $31,832 for a $4,547 PTA. RADiUS did not reveal actual non-theatrical numbers, but noted its solid showing in the space Sunday via co-president Tom Quinn: “After multiple awards, rave reviews, and an extraordinary Festival run, Blue Ruin is finally unleashed unto the masses. It’s delivering solid numbers theatrically and kicking some serious butt on VOD, reaching #11 on Itunes beating the likes of Hobbit, Gravity and Anchorman. This is a real Cinderella story and I expect it to be the first of many hits to come for the brilliant Jeremy Saulnier and Macon Blair.

Liberty Studios opened WWII-set Walking With The Enemy with Ben Kingsley and Jonas Armstrong in 258 theaters, which was easily the weekend’s largest theatrical opening among Specialties. It grossed over $357K, averaging a slight $1,384.

Among other openers, Sundance Selects’ Young & Beautiful had a slightly higher $4,600 result, though that came from just one theater in New York. The French-language feature will roll out to the top ten markets throughout May. Kino Lorber’s documentary hybrid Who Is Dayani Cristal? by Marc Silver and featuring Gael García Bernal opened in two locations, grossing $6,500 ($3,250 PTA). It will head to L.A. and other markets in the coming weeks. Sony Classics’ For No Good Reason also launched in a pair of locations, grossing just over $5K for a $2,507 PTA. It will have a limited roll out. And Last Passenger was virtually a non-starter this weekend. The feature bowed in 10 theaters, grossing just over $9K, giving it a weak $909 PTA.

Millennium Films’ Fading Gigolo, starring director John Turturro along with Woody Allen and Sharon Stone, had the year’s second biggest PTA launch last weekend. Millennium added 32 theaters in its second frame with solid results. It grossed well over $322K, averaging $8,719, giving the title the second highest PTA of the weekend behind Locke. The company’s CEO Bill Lee noted Sunday: “After very strong weekday grosses and coming off its fantastic opening, Fading Gigolo is having a stellar second weekend. We saw grosses jump 100% from Friday to Saturday. The phenomenal word of mouth is clearly spreading. People are responding to John Turturro’s comedic and romantic tale.” Fading Gigolo will head to the top 10 markets next Friday.

The Weinstein Company gave The Railway Man a big expansion in its third weekend, adding 130 locations from the week prior. It grossed $606K, averaging $3,885. In its second weekend, Railway Man grossed $176K ($6,773 PTA) from 26 theaters. Its three-week cume is nearly $923K and will easily pass $1M this week.

Sony Classics added three dozen theaters for the third round of Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive. It grossed over $216K in 53 theaters, for a $4,084 PTA. The film passed the half-million mark, coming in at $516,471. IFC Films/Sundance Selects added theaters for the third frame of both Dancing In Jaffa and Hateship Loveship, playing each in 13 theaters. Jaffa grossed $21,600 ($1,800 PTA) this weekend after getting four additional runs over the previous week when it had averaged $2K in 9 theaters. Hateship Loveship is having a softer expansion, with ten theaters added over the previous week. It grossed $8,450 for a $650 PTA. It averaged $3K in three theaters a week ago.
