IAC’s Electus has retained the international format rights to the CW‘s newly greenlighted series Jane The Virgin, which will be sold by the company’s global distribution arm Electus International. Jane The Virgin, produced by CBS TV Studios, itself is an adaptation of the Venezuelan telenovela Juana La Virgen. Written by Jennie Snyder Urman and executive produced by Electus founder Ben Siverman, Jane The Virgin is in the tone of another hourlong U.S. adaptation of a telenovela about a young Latina that Silverman executive produced, ABC’s Ugly Betty. The CW series chronicles the story of aspiring writer Jane Villanueva who is accidentally artificially inseminated and subsequently struggles to navigate her relationships with the biological father, her boyfriend and her religious mother. (watch trailer below) Urman is executive producing with Silverman, Gary Pearl and RCTV International’s Jorge Granier. “The success of Ugly Betty proved that telenovelas can attract audiences all over the world,” Silverman said. “I knew the instant that RCTV and Aquarius TV brought Jane to us that we had a potentially enormous hit on our hands.”
