ABC’s sudsy Mistresses returned last night at 10 PM to tie CBS’ 48 Hours (1.2/4). Its second-season opener was its most-watched telecast yet, rising 2% (100,000 viewers over its first-season launch, 4.5 million vs. 4.4 million) while holding even in the demo. (ABC noted that during the show’s first season, Mistresses jumped 50% from its initially reported Live+Same Day number to its final Live+7 adults 18-49 rating, making it the second-biggest gainer for any summer broadcast series in 2013, behind only the network’s Rookie Blue.)
Earlier in the night, ABC’s The Bachelorette predictably rose sharply from its Sunday special – 21% in the demo and 30% in viewers. Bachelorette was up by 14% in total viewers over its year-ago telecast, and held even in the demo.
NBC’s 9-11 PM American Ninja Warrior spiked 19% week-to-week, from a 1.6 to a 1.9/6, to rank No. 1 for the night; among the shows it edged out were Fox’s 24: Live Another Day (1.8/6).
But Fox ranked No. 1 for the night in the demo (1.8/6 to NBC’s 1.7/5, ABC’s 1.5/5, CBS’ 1.1/4 and the CW’s 0.4/1), as well as adults 18-34 and 25-54; the network finished behind ABC in overall audience, with 5.66 million viewers and 5.83 million, respectively. Fox’s 8 PM MasterChef (1.7/6) jumped 21% week-to-week, and 24% in total viewers (5.1 million), after which 24 bubbled up 20% in the demo and 9% in viewers (6.2 million) compared to its previous performance.
