It wasn’t literally the explosions of Macy’s 4th Of July Fireworks Spectacular of last week but the return of Crossbones (0.6/2) cut a path through the Friday ratings wilderness for NBC last night. In fact, it was a good night all round for NBC and ABC with their end of week originals all seeing ratings climbs. Back for its first original since June 27, the Blackbeard re-telling starring John Malkovich saw its draw among Adults 18-49 soar 50%. The fifth episode of the action-adventure pirate series from Luther creator Neil Cross actually matched the ratings results of the third episode, which aired on June 20.
While NBC was pre-empted in San Francisco for Major League Baseball, that rise for Crossbones, the sole drama of the night, certainly was helped by the 20% upward movement of its lead-in Dateline (1.2/5). In its first original since June 20, the 8 – 10 PM NBC news mag series was tied with ABC’s 1-hour 20/20 (1.2/5) at 10 PM for the highest rated show of the night. Up 50% among the key demo over last week, 20/20 was also the second most watched show of the night with a viewership of 6.25 million. With 6.46 million tuning in, the most watched show of the night was an encore of CBS’ Blue Bloods (0.8/3) at 10 PM. Coming off a Shark Tank (0.9/4) repeat at 8 PM, ABC’s Primetime: What Would You Do? (0.9/4) was also up 50% from its July 4th show. ABC and NBC were tied for the top rated network of the night with 1.0/4 each while CBS was the most watched network with 5.250 million viewers.
