EXCLUSIVE: Following the release of his latest feature, the true story marijuana trafficking pic Kid Cannabis, multi-hyphenate John Stockwell has signed with Paradigm. The actor, writer, director and producer started his career acting in films like Losin’ It and Top Gun, both opposite Tom Cruise, starred in miniseries North and South, and battled a killer car in Stephen King’s Christine. Stockwell’s screenwriting credits include Blue Crush, Rock Star, Under Cover, Dangerously Close, and Kid Cannabis. He also wrote the Emmy-nominated telefilm Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden, episodes of Showtime’s The L Word, and Cheaters. The latter earned Stockwell an Emmy nod for Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries or a Movie. He broke through as a director with 2001′s Crazy/Beautiful and 2002′s surfing pic Blue Crush, following with a run of features behind the camera including Into the Blue, Turistas, Cat Run, and Dark Tide. Stockwell most recently helmed the Gina Carano-starring actioner In The Blood and is currently developing aspirational sports pic Dig for Voltage Pictures.
Lionsgate has upped Taryn Manning to a series regular for the second season of its Netflix series Orange Is The New Black. Netflix last month ordered a second season of the prison dramedy, in which Manning plays Tiffany ‘Pennsatucky’ Doggett on the show – a meth addict who is the youngest of six children born to drug and alcohol addicted parents in rural Virginia. Manning, who’s repped by APA, Oren Segal of Radius Entertainment, and Felker Toczek Gellman Suddleson LLP, recently completed shooting Low Down, from writer/producer Jeff Preiss, opposite John Hawkes, Elle Fanning, Ezra Miller, Glenn Close, Tim Daly, Peter Dinklage and Flea. Credits for Manning include guest gigs on Hawaii Five-O and Sons Of Anarchy; film-wise, her credits include Love Ranch, Hustle & Flow, Cold Mountain, 8 Mile, A Lot Like Love, White Oleander, Crazy/Beautiful and Crossroads.
Caren Bohrman, a literary agent who founded The Bohrman Agency and brokered screenwriter deals for films such as The Fugitive and Warlock, passed away Sunday after a long battle with cancer, her sister Catharine tells FishbowlLA. She was 56. Bohrman was involved in nearly 200 screenplays and pilots over the course of her nearly 30-year career. Her produced films included Crazy/Beautiful, Buckaroo Banzai, The United States Of Leland and Employee Of The Month. She also secured the U.S. theatrical release of the Salvador Carrasco-directed and Plácido Domingo-produced The Other Conquest, about neo-colonialism from an Aztec point of view. More recently she had worked on Middleton with Andy Garcia, Vera Farmiga and Tom Skerritt; on the Maria Bello/Michael Sheen film Beautiful Boy; and Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum‘s The Vow. Before her death, she had more than a dozen projects in various stages of development.
