Showtime Books Time-Jumping David Bowie Docu (Video)A new documentary delves deep into the Thin White Duke’s personal archive and emerges with a detailed look at his many ch-ch-changes. Showtime has set an August 1 premiere for David Bowie: Five Years, which focuses on individual years during the most commercially successful period of his long career. It starts with 1971, when he created the Ziggy Stardust persona; then moves to 1975, David Bowie BWwhen Bowie scored his first two U.S. top 10 singles; 1977, which spawned the influential albums Low and Heroes; 1980, the year of Scary Monsters; and “Fashion”; and 1983, the peak of his global popularity with Let’s Dance and the Serious Moonlight tour. Producers got unique access to the rock chameleon’s personal archive of costumes, set designs, lyrics and memorabilia, and each year mines the sources of his inspiration and where it led him. Jay Leno Back On NBC…As ‘Last Comic Standing’ MentorNBC said today he will return to the network as the final comic mentor on Last Comic Standing on Thursday at 10 PM. In the episode, the final five comics are flown to meet surprise guest Leno in Las Vegas and ask him questions about stand-up comedy. He answers, shares personal stories and anecdotes and gives advice before the next stand-up routines that whittle the contestants to four. The season finale is August 14.

Jay Leno has kept himself busy since departing as longtime host of The Tonight Show in February, from hosting his car show Jay Leno’s Garage (it was nominated for an Emmy) to surprising Arsenio Hall to announce (prematurely, it turned out) that The Arsenio Hall Show had been renewed, He also was inducted into the TV Academy’s Hall of Fame in March, and the next month  he had a street named for him on the Universal lot.

ICM Partners Adds Two AgentsIn a morning meeting today ICM Partners announced it has hired another former Resolution agent, Kevin Hussey, and promoted NY-based talent department coordinator Sarah Kelly to agent. Hussey will be based in LA and Kelly will stay on the East Coast. Hussey worked at CAA for four years before joining Resolution as a talent agent in 2013, working closely there with Steve Alexander, who made the jump to ICM Partners on Friday as the agency’s 39th partner. Hussey, a former investment banker, was in the office today. Kelly began her career at ICM in 2010 as an intern, after which she became an assistant in the talent department working for co-head Adam Schweitzer. She was accepted into the agent trainee program in 2012.

Tara Lynne Barr Joins NBC’s ‘Aquarius’; Kahyun Kim In ‘Mysteries Of Laura’Tara Lynne Barr has booked a recurring role in NBC‘s upcoming series Aquarius, a gritty 1960s drama about a cop (David Duchovny) who goes undercover to track Charles Manson and the Manson Family before their infamous murder spree. APA-repped Barr will play Katie (Patricia Krenwinkle), one of Manson’s adoring acolytes, who helps him lay a trap for the unwitting Emma, and later joins in the party when Manson deflowers his new recruit. Barr will next be seen in upcoming horror thriller feature 6 Miranda Drive.

Disney’s ‘Jungle Book’ Adds Christopher Walken & Giancarlo EspositoChristopher Walken will voice King Louie, the ruler of a troop of monkeys and apes, and Giancarlo Esposito will play Akela, leader of the wolf pack, in Disney‘s Jungle Book. It’s the latest edition to the live-action/animation hybrid pic, which Jon Favreau is directing from a script by Justin Marks. The duo join Ben Kingsley as Bagheera, Lupita Nyong’o as Raksha, Idris Elba as Shere Khan, Scarlett Johansson as Kaa and newcomer Neel Sethi as Mowgli – the only actor to physically appear on screen. The 3D pic has an October 9, 2015 release date.

Under the new five-year deal, El Rey will have access to 255 martial arts titles from the Shaw Brothers vault – the world’s leading martial arts collection, many on an exclusive basis. Hulu Plus Picks Up Streaming Rights To WGN Drama ‘Manhattan’

Hulu Plus Picks Up Streaming Rights To WGN Drama ‘Manhattan’Hulu’s subscription service Hulu Plus has bought exclusive VOD rights to stream online episodes of WGN America‘s new historical drama Manhattanthe companies announced the morning after the show’s debut. Under the deal, new episodes of the show will unspool each Monday after their initial Sunday airing on WGN until all 13 have played. The five most recent episodes will be available for free on Hulu’s basic service, after a three-day delay.

Hulu touted the deal in a release as the first time it has secured SVOD rights on a show before a single episode has aired. Manhattan is set in WWII in the Manhattan Project in New Mexico’s desert, where the federal government set up a secret project to research the first atomic weapons, and the surrounding and equally secret community set up to support the work. The show is being produced by Tribune Studios, Lionsgate and Skydance TelevisionManhattan was created and written by Sam Shaw (Masters of Sex) and directed by Thomas Schlamme (The West Wing). Executive producers are Shaw, Schlamme, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Marcy Ross and Dustin Thomason.

R.I.P., ‘El Mariachi’ Star Peter Marquardt

R.I.P., ‘El Mariachi’ Star Peter MarquardtPeter Charles Marquardt, an actor and video-game producer who played the drug kingpin villain in El Mariachi and appeared in other Robert Rodriguez films as well, died in Austin July 19, at the age of 50, an Austin funeral home has confirmed. Marquardt also appeared in Rodriguez’s films Desperado and Spy Kids 3D: Game Over, as well as several short films. Separately, he was voice talent and an associate producer for Austin-based ION Storm on several video games, most notably Deus Ex in 2000 and Wing Commander IV in 1996and was co-producer on one game,  Dominion: Storm Over Gift 3. 

El Mariachi posterA funeral director at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home and Memorial Park in Austin confirmed that Marquardt had died but had no other information. Cook-Walden’s website said funeral arrangements are pending. No information on the cause of death was immediately available and Austin police could not be reached.

Marquardt met Rodriguez while they were participating in a drug study and were bunk mates. Rodriguez was participating in the study to raise money for 1992′s El Mariachi, his first film, famously shot for a little more than $7,000. Marquardt played Mauricio, the drug gang kingpin whose crew mistakes El Mariachi, the guitarist played by Carlos Gallardo, as an assassin. Later, Marquardt (who did not speak Spanish), showed up in a flashback of that role in Rodriquez’s 1995 big-budget sequel Desperado, starring Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek.

This one, which drew some of the biggest cheers of the weekend when it was shown last night at San Diego Comic-Con, will feature Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Rosie Huntington-Whitely, Hugh Keays-Byrne and Nicholas Hoult when it arrives next year. Miller shares writing credit with Brendan McCarthy and Nick Lathouris. Producers are Miller, P.J. Voeten and Doug Mitchell. Warner Bros. is distributing.

Here’s Another Look At Starz’s ‘Outlander’ — One You’ll Be Seeing Every WeekA day after debuting a new trailer at its Comic-Con panel, Starz has released the opening title sequence for its new time-warping drama. We see stars including Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan along with weapons and wildlife, stitches and sunsets. The Outlander credits are set to a new arrangement of centuries-old Scottish folk tune “The Skye Boat Song” by The Walking Dead composer (decomposer?) Bear McCready and sung by his wife Raya Yarbrough. They also teamed on projects for such series as Da Vinci’s Demons, for which he won an Emmy, and Battlestar Galactica. Have a look and listen:

Comic-Con: Legendary Unveils Glimpse Of New King Kong Pic ‘Skull Island’Legendary Entertainment packed its film panel today with plenty of monsters (Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah), but a small teaser at the end of the Hall H event today glimpsed an unexpected one: King Kong. It was Legendary’s way of unveiling that it will be making a feature film based on King Kong’s home Skull Island. That film will be released November 4, 2016. The teaser video did the trick, showing first person POV soaring over dark and stormy seas into an island — Skull Island — where King Kong stands tall and roars.

From the studio’s post-panel release: “Previous works have touched on the island, but staying and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions.”

Those words appear at the beginning of the first official trailer for Kevin Smith’s wacky horror thriller Tusk which dropped last night at Comic-Con. Smith is clearly in his element in this genre. Set in the Canadian wilderness, pic stars Justin Long as a podcaster who’s assigned to interview a mysterious seafarer (Michael Parks) who happens to have a strange obsession with walruses. She will oversee day-to-day business and legal affairs for the company’s production, sales and distribution activities and manage the company’s current five-person legal team. She reports to IM Global founder and CEO Stuart Ford and COO Chris Bosco.

Deborah ZipserAt River Road, Zipser was Head of Business Affairs working on movies including Terrence Malick’s The Tree Of Life, Into the Wild, Brokeback Mountain and Food Inc. Before that she was senior investment executive at Screen Australia.

IM Global, which became part of Indian conglomerate Reliance ADA Group in 2010, has been evolving into what Ford calls “an international facing studio.” It had its biggest slate ever at Cannes this year, recently tied up with China’s Huayi Brothers for international sales and has offices in LA, London, Mumbai, Mexico City, and Beijing.

Steve Alexander Lands At ICM PartnersFormer Resolution talent agent Steve Alexander has joined ICM Partners‘ LA office as a partner. Alexander reps actors including David Duchovny, Orphan Black‘s Tatiana Maslany and Joy Bryant, who are joining him in the move. He recently exited Resolution among other high-profile departures including Dennis Kim and Leigh Brillstein.

Alexander brings ICM Partners’ total number of partners to 39.
