MORE PR SHAKE-UP: 42 West Hires B|W|R SVP Dvora Vener Englefield For Music Dept

By Nikki Finke | Category: Music | Wednesday March 3, 2010 @ 10:12am PST

42West announced today the appointment of veteran music publicist Dvora Vener Englefield to head a newly created music department within the firm’s Talent Division. The flack who has repped some of the biggest names in the music industry will be joined by publicist Lisa Taylor and both will be based in 42West’s Los Angeles office. “Although we have long represented a wide variety of recording artists, we’ve always wanted to have a department devoted solely to music,” said 42 West founder Leslee Dart. “What made it possible for us to finally take this step was finding an executive of Dvora’s caliber to lead this initiative.” Englefield was a SVP at B|W|R where she created and ran the music department. Her clients included Christina Aguilera, Evanescence, Linkin Park, Maroon 5, Neil Diamond, Ziggy Marley, Alanis Morissette, Motley Crue and Prince among others. She also launched and repped American Idol for the show’s first 4 seasons. UPDATE: Both women left B|W|R about a year ago.

PR SHOCKER! Matt Labov Leaves B|W|R

By Nikki Finke | Wednesday February 24, 2010 @ 9:35am PST

What's bizarre is that Matt Labov's decision to start his own flackery follows B|W|R last month promoting him to co-president with Leslie Sloane Zelnik. This is a major, major loss. Labov joined B|W|R in 1994 and built a comedy roster of Jack Black, Steve Carell, Sacha Baron Cohen, Will Ferrell, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Judd Apatow, Jay Roach, and Jason Schwartzman. He also consulted on the release campaigns of Superbad, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Borat, and Bruno. "That's a HUGE problem for them. He holds ALL of the male comedic talent," a source emailed me. UPDATE: Finally, here's the news release. It's amazing to me that this huge PR operation couldn't get its statement out to me. Then again, no one at that shop ever bothers to answer the phone either. How pathetic is that?:

Los Angeles, CA (February 23, 2010) – After 16 years of shaping the agency’s comedy roster, Matt Labov is departing B|W|R Public Relations to establish his own, yet-unnamed independent company focused on comedy and broader consulting beyond traditional public relations services.

Labov, recently named co-president of B|W|R, will be launching his new venture and will bring with him such longtime clients as Jack Black, Steve Carell, Will Ferrell, Jonah Hill, Jay Roach, Seth Rogen and Jason Segel.  As a P.R. and marketing strategist, Labov has also consulted on the release campaigns for such films as Borat, Bruno, Superbad, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, I Love You, Man and the HBO comedy series “Eastbound & Down.”

“The desire to embark on this new

News Corp Flack Jumps To Time Warner

By Nikki Finke | Category: Big Media | Wednesday February 17, 2010 @ 5:27pm PST

I completely forgot to post it when I heard last Friday that News Corp corporate mouthpiece Gary Ginsberg will now be Time Warner's corporate mouthpiece once the board approves it. Ginsberg is telling folks it's a bigger job than Ed Adler's and involves more advising and strategy stuff. But Adler was personally and professionally close to every TW CEO, including Gerry Levin then Dick Parsons then Jeff Bewkes who was gobsmacked when Adler unexpectedly resigned last Friday. Ginsberg was unfairly pushed out of News Corp because James Murdoch didn't like him. I'm glad he landed so quickly, but then again someone with his Big Media experience doesn't come available very often.

Tom Cruise Fires Another PR Agency: This Time Exits Rogers & Cowan For 42 West

By Nikki Finke | Category: Actors | Thursday January 28, 2010 @ 2:53pm PST

BREAKING NEWS! EXCLUSIVE UPDATE: So my sources just told me. He'd been with Paul Bloch and Arnold Robinson at Rogers & Cowan. He'll now be repped by 42 West's Amanda Lundberg, who also personally reps MGM CEO Mary Parent. Cruise is still the titular head of United Artists although the studio is now seemingly dormant because of MGM's financial problems teetering on the bring of bankruptcy. "42West handles MGM’s movies, and Tom was impressed by Amanda’s work on Valkyrie," an insider explains to me. "They’ve been talking about this for a long time." Read More »

HOLLYWOOD PR SHAKEUP: Simon Lands

By Nikki Finke | Monday January 4, 2010 @ 6:36pm PST

No surprise, but Simon Halls is joining his former HBH partners Stephen Huvane and Robin Baum at their new Slate PR. Halls resigned as co-CEO at PMK/HBH effective on December 31st right after the flackery merged with BNC. (Cindi Berger, PMK's other co-CEO, is remaining to work with Michael Nyman and the rest of the two companies.) "Stephen, Robin, and I have been a team for 15 years, and I wouldn't want to move forward without them,": Halls told me just now. "On top of that, we have worked with Andy Gelb for 9 years and can't say enough about him. And everyone knows that Ina Treciokas, our other new partner, is best in class in entertainment PR."

Halls is bringing all his clients, which include Sam Mendes, Ang Lee, Ridley and Tony Scott, Michael Patrick King, the USA Network, Tom Ford, Akiva Goldsman, Jude Law, Annette Bening, Ryan Murphy, Working Title, Tribeca and Gore Verbinski. Slate PR now also reps Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Anne Hathaway,Demi Moore, Julianne Moore, Uma Thurman, Kirsten Dunst, Liv Tyler, Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Daniel Craig, Ryan Gosling, Naomi Watts, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jimmy Fallon, Harrison Ford, Woody Harrelson, Benicio DelToro, Hugh Laurie and Katie Holmes, plus the SAG awards, the American Music Awards, Critics Choice Awards, and the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. "The company is well positioned to become an instant industry leader," Halls said. "The company has offices in both LA and NYC and is already running with all engines blazing." Spoken like a true PRman.

BNC explains to me about recent exits from PMK/HBH prior to the merger:

BNC logoVictoria Harvie and her associate leaving was not unexpected. Many of her clients she was working on conflicted (she reps Mercedes/we rep Audi; she reps EBay/we rep Amazon) with current PMK·BNC clients. She is extremely talented and we wish her the best at ID.

Also we would be remiss not to address what is left at PMK·BNC (in respect to Talent representation). Most of the coverage has focused on the few talent publicists leaving.

By way of background, with a merger of this size we expected that there would be some that chose to pursue other opportunities. Again, we wish them the best. The majority of the talent department executives from

More Hollywood PR Fallout: ID Hires 2 PMK/HBH Veteran Publicists

By Nikki Finke | Friday December 18, 2009 @ 1:58pm PST

UPDATES TOLDJA! PMK·BNC Finally Confirm Merger

Still more PMK/HBH flacks are abandoning ship in advance of the January 1st merger of the newly named PMK·BNC joint company. Others have struck out on their own or joined the newly formed Slate PR. Which begs the question: What exactly is BNC left buying when all the shaking up finally stops?

ID logoLOS ANGELES, CA, DECEMBER 21, 2009 – ID has tapped longtime PMK/HBH brand publicity executive Victoria Harvie as Vice President of Brand Strategies, CEO Kelly Bush and COO Mara Buxbaum announced today. Harvie will co-head ID’s Brand Strategies Department in Los Angeles with Vice President Heather Greenfield who has successfully managed ID’s brand business over the past four years. Also joining from PMK/HBH is Dan Strickford, signing on as an Account Director.

Longtime ID talent publicist Tamar Cohen is expanding her role from personal publicity to serve as a Senior Account Executive in the NYC office where she will continue to represent a select number of personal clients while integrating into ID’s brand representation. MORE HOLLYWOOD PR SHAKEUP: Now Rival BWR Under Attack From BNC/PMK

By Nikki Finke | Category: Deals | Friday December 11, 2009 @ 8:21am PST

UPDATES Simon Halls Resigns As PMK/HBH CEO; Who's Next To Go?
UPDATES Andy Gelb Leaves Before Merger; Simon Halls Is A Short-Timer
UPDATES EXCLUSIVE: HOLLYWOOD PR SHAKEUP!

EXCLUSIVE: There's still more fallout from the announced merger between BNC and PMK/HBH which I'll now refer to as just PMK since HBH founders Stephen Huvane, Robin Baum and Simon Halls have all resigned. Rival BWR (Baker Winokur Ryder) is finding itself under attack. "There's been a lot of solicitation of our people. I know there is a current of wheeling and dealing going on to take advantage of situation," a BWR insider tells me. "But we're feeling a sense of vulnerability. We're making every effort and there's not been a single renegotiation yet. But I do believe that's forthcoming." As a result, the BWR brass sent out an email to its staff yesterday to try to head off any defections. It said:

The recent merger of PMK with BNC has created a lot of upheaval among entertainment public relations firms and significant defections industry wide. We encourage our staff to take a big breath while this unfolds. Like the other firms, we expect changes at BWR in the coming year, and we are currently assessing the situation. We are committed to retaining our staff and fostering a

TOLDJA! Simon Halls Resigns As PMK/HBH CEO; Jennifer Allen & Melissa Kates Leave To Go It Alone; Who's Next To Go?

UPDATES EXCLUSIVE: HOLLYWOOD PR SHAKEUP!

PMK_LogoBREAKING NEWS! EXCLUSIVE! The shoes just keep dropping and dropping because of the merger between PMKHBH and BNC... The above news was just announced at the PMK/HBH staff meeting, according to my sources. Simon Halls resigned as PMK/HBH CEO, while publicists Jennifer Allen and Melissa Kates are leaving to form their own flackery. Simon Halls started HBH with Robin Baum and Stephen Huvane and that company merged with PMK in 2001. Halls took over as CEO when Pat Kingsley stepped down last year. Halls' clients include USA Network, Ang Lee, Ridley Scott, Sam Mendes, Working Title Films, TriBeca Productions, Jude Law, and Akiva Goldsman.

Andy Gelb & Team Leave PMK/HBH Before Merger; Simon Halls Is A Short-Timer

By Nikki Finke | Category: Deals | Wednesday December 9, 2009 @ 12:49pm PST

UPDATES EXCLUSIVE: HOLLYWOOD PR SHAKEUP!

BNC logoThere's more fallout from the coming January 1st merger of PMK/HBH and BNC which I exclusively reported back on Monday. PMK/HBH EVP overseeing events Andy Gelb and his team including Shawn Purdy and Stephanie Samson are heading over to Ina Treciokas' PR shop to join other merger refugees Robin Baum and Stephen Huvane. Also Erica Gray out of NYC. Gelb is a masterful event PR/marketer known for his red carpet work on the SAG awards, American Music Awards, and Tony awards. PMK_LogoMeanwhile, I'm hearing that Simon Halls will also be leaving PMK/HBH as soon as his contract is up. Another piece of info is that, although there's a new name, Slate PR, all these arriving flacks aren't really joining Ina's firm. Baum, Huvane, Gelb, etc will be working their clients individually inside her office space and with her support staff but everyone will be doing their own thing. "These independent contractors may be under one roof, but they dont intend to grow their business together," a source tells me. Now that the Hollywood PR shakeup has begun, the assessment is that PMK/HBH was toast anyway because it wasn't operating at a profit and wasn't being managed well. So BNC's uber-agressive leader Michael Nyman pounced. The newly merged company as of January 1st will be run by Michael Nyman and Chris Robichaud and Cindi Berger and Brad Cafarelli with Lewis Kay taking ... Read More »

The flackery long associated with Lee Solters is changing its name "in deference to the late PR guru's wishes". As of January 1st, Solters & Digney will now be known as Digney & Co Public Relations as Jerry Digney adds Merv Griffin's inhouse publicist Marcia Newberger, and travel publicist Arlene Winnick.

4TH UPDATE: HOLLYWOOD PR SHAKEUP!

By Nikki Finke | Category: Best Of, Deals | Monday December 7, 2009 @ 10:05am PST

BREAKING NEWS! EXCLUSIVE!

PMK_Logo4TH UPDATE -- MONDAY 10:50 AM: What is being described to me as the biggest U.S. entertainment and lifestyle public relations and marketing company will be created on January 1st. This morning, PMK/HBH announced to its staff that it was merging with BNC. Both powerful brands are owned by advertising and marketing giant InterPublic, which gave its blessing to the union when the pair began negotiations about two months ago. "We went to them and said, 'This is what we want to do,' and they loved it," an insider tells me. I've learned that the combined PR firms  will represent more than 160 staff and gross billings over $70 million. "The idea was that during these transformational times right now we wanted a game-changer," an insider explained to me just now. "It united two very powerful brands and will change the PR landscape in Hollywood." BNC logoCertainly, it's a great fit in terms of skill sets and client rosters, with little duplication. (I'm told that is why the bigwigs aren't "anticipating" any layoffs.) BNC specializes in more marketing and corporate representation in addition to its roster of celebrities and TV shows and moviemakers, while PMK/HBH has more celebrities and TV shows and moviemakers than marketing and corporate representation.

Because this is Hollywood, everyone atop both companies have known each other  for seemingly forever. "It's not like we're strangers," one insider tells me. "We've ... Read More »

About Hollywood's Coming-Out PR Guru

By Nikki Finke | Category: Actors, Gays | Monday October 26, 2009 @ 9:31am PST

bragman1LA Weekly recently ran an in-depth cover story on how showbiz flack Howard Bragman helps gay actors come out to the Industry. “In Hollywood,” Bragman told the paper's Patrick Range McDonald, “most publicists keep their clients in the closet. And I’m the guy people tend to come to when they want to come out of the closet.” He's done this since 1991 when Bragman helped actor Dick Sargent — the second Darrin on Bewitched — to come out on Entertainment Tonight. Most recently, Bragman has helped Chastity Bono navigate the publicity of becoming the transgendered man, Chaz Bono. "I didn’t want it in The National Enquirer, so I called TMZ and told Harvey Levin it’s a go. He did it in the most respectful way," Bragman said. "Chaz still hasn’t said one word to the media. It’s worked out really well.” The publicist has also brought out former Party of Five regular Mitchell Anderson, Married With Children co-star Amanda Bearse, and 1980s TV character actor Tom Villard (before he died of complications from AIDS in 1994). During one high-profile stretch of sports figures, Bragman also brought out NFL defensive lineman Esera Tuaolo, LPGA star Rosie Jones, WNBA star Sheryl Swoopes and retired NBA center John Amaechi, all of whom remained closeted until after they consulted with Bragman, who worked for months on their coming-out plans.

Bragman isn't yet as well-known for this as for founding major flackery BNC (Bragman, Nyman, Cafarelli) or and his new boutique PR firm Fifteen Minutes. ... Read More »
