R.I.P. Roy Disney
UPDATE: The nephew of Walt Disney died at age 79 after a bout with cancer.
It wouldn’t have mattered so much if Roy E. Disney had not been the son of Roy O. Disney who'd founded the Walt Disney Company with his brother. Or if Roy had not looked so eerily like a mirror image of his late uncle. Because he did, it seemed Walt Disney himself came back from the grave in 2003/2004 to rid the Mouse House of Michael Eisner, the man Roy had famously hired back in 1984. Few men lead two coups, much less on the same company.
And that will be Roy's legacy.
Most of the time, Roy was more likely found at his Irish castle or on his 70-foot sailboat than leading a boardroom brawl. In both cases, the reaction was surprise, followed by headlines, followed by “What took so long?” Of course, Roy was helped by his financial guru Stanley Gold. Each time Roy used as his reasoning that the Walt Disney Co had grown creatively stagnant.
The great irony, of course, was that Roy Disney beginning in 1984 waged war against Walt’s son-in-law Ron Miller, and found the billionaire Bass Brothers of Ft. Worth to help bankroll his battle. Then Roy brought in Michael Eisner. The two men had met back in 1980 when Eisner joined Roy on the board of the California Institute of Arts, which was founded by Walt as a training ... Read More »

Golden Globe Animation Category Expands
There will be five contenders for the Best Animated Feature category when the bogus 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards nominations are announced at 5 AM (PT) on December 15th. Members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association voted last week to expand this year's number of nominations for Best Animated Feature to five. The amended rule now reads: Eligible films must be feature-length (70 minutes or longer) with no more than 25% live action. If less than eight animated films qualify, the award will not be given, in which case the films would be eligible for Best Picture. If less than twelve animated films qualify, the category will be limited to three nominations per year. The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards, hosted by Ricky Gervais, will be broadcast live January 17 on NBC.

Wallace & Gromit Celebrate 20 Years...

...with a Google Doodle. The beloved plasticine duo appeared as an illustration on the Google UK homepage this week to mark the 20 years since Nick Park's duo appeared in public back in 1989 at an animation festival in the 22-minute romp A Grand Day Out, later broadcast by the BBC. As The Guardian reported, "so a UK institution was born". But they're pretty darn popular worldwide, too.
Nickelodeon To Revive Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles For TV/Film After Acquiring Global Rights For $60M
Viacom's Nickelodeon announced today it has acquired the global intellectual property rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from The Mirage Group and 4Kids Entertainment. The purchase price was about $60 million. Nickelodeon also announced plans to develop a new CG-animated television series based on the popular superhero franchise for 2012. Also, in partnership with Viacom's Paramount Pictures, a new release of a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feature film is also planned for 2012. Nickelodeon has also acquired all merchandising rights to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and will continue to work with its original and long-standing toy partner, Playmates Toys, which has been the creative force behind the TMNT master toy program over the last two decades. The deal was done by Cyma Zarghami, the president of Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group, and Adam Goodman, the president of Paramount Pictures.
Disney Toons Up With Guillermo Del Toro Under "Disney Double Dare You" Label
Anaheim, California -- September 11, 2009 -- The Walt Disney Studios, in collaboration with acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth,” “The Hobbit”), is launching a new production label called Disney Double Dare You, to create new animated films full of chills and thrills for audiences of all ages, it was announced today at the D23 Expo by Dick Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. The first project in development for the new label is called “Trollhunters,” an original del Toro story which he will produce.
Commenting on the announcement, Cook said, “Guillermo is a brilliant and visionary filmmaker, and we’re excited to be launching this new label with him. His knowledge and appreciation for Disney films, along with his penchant for creating worlds of fantasy, presented a great opportunity for us to explore a whole new genre of filmmaking for moviegoers of all ages. We have admired Guillermo’s imaginative approach to filmmaking for some time, and now we’re proud to be working with him to create films full of imaginative delights and lots of thrills at the same time.”
Del Toro added, “As a director, I love to take audiences into fantastic new worlds and provide them with some anxious moments in the process. It is part of the Disney canon

Emmy Campaigning? Or "Naked Trolling"?
It's rare that any writer openly campaigns for an Emmy. But Family Guy's Patrick Meighan sent around this amusing email that raised a few eyebrows to the many people who received it. "I've certainly known plenty of people nominated for Emmys (hell, who hasn't been nominated?)," one of the recipients told me, "and I've never seen such a naked trolling for votes." Appropriate or inappropriate? You decide:
Hey, friend-of-Pat. Hope you're doing well.
Prolly you've heard that Family Guy got nominated for an Emmy for Best Comedy today. It's the first time that an animated show has been nominated in that category since 1961 (when The Flintstones lost to The Jack Benny Show). 1961! Alaska had just become a state. Internet porn about pregnant chicks was still a crazy, futuristic dream. And the leading cause of death in our nation among males age 18 to 40 was whistling at white women.
We at Family Guy are simultaneously thrilled and confused by today's development. Mostly thrilled, though. And since I, in particular, am new to this whole Emmy scene, I'm gonna violate longstanding rules of Emmy decorum and beg you -- if you happen to be a member of the TV Academy -- to please consider wasting your Best Comedy vote on our cartoon picture!
Note that Academy members who wish to vote in this category NEED TO SIGN UP TO VOTE (see instructions and link below).
And if you, yourself, aren't an Academy member but happen to

UPDATE: Imagi Couldn't Make Payroll So Halts 'Astro Boy' & Lays Off 80 Animators
WRITETHRU, NEW INFO: What happened is that Imagi Animation Studios lost some investor funding in September, got it back in late fall, expected new money sometime in January or February, and then needed a bridge loan to keep up and running, which they claim to have secured but has been late in coming. So the financially squeezed Hong Kong-based studio responsible for TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) realized Friday night that it couldn't make its Los Angeles payroll, called everyone on Saturday and laid off almost 80 union animators out of the 120 staff in the LA office, and halted production on the upcoming CGI-animated feature film Astro Boy for Summit Entertainment. Behind the scenes, the company is privately assuring Summit that this won't affect the pic's release this year. Imagi is expecting the bridge loan to come through on February 3rd. An insider just told me, "Our No. 1 concern is to finish Astro Boy with this incredible team." I'm hearing that the fiscal crisis could also affect 2010's Gatchaman. Just to add more insight, Imagi not only is having financial problems with its production, but it does not have money to release the film. The deal with Summit is a "service deal" meaning that Summit is simply releasing the film and Imagi has to put up all the P&A. Imagi, with the help of WMA, has been going around town trying to raise $30 million of P&A. It's really an unfortunate mess.
UH-OH! Paramount Unaware 'South Park' Hated On Spielberg & Lucas & 'Indy 4'; UPDATE: Everyone Just Plans To Ignore It
2ND UPDATE: I understand that no Hollywood bigwig will bother to lodge a protest with Viacom over the South Park episode. "We don't want to engage. We just want it to go away," an insider just told me. The Wednesday night episode, which was the show's fall season premiere, was seen by an average of 3.7 million viewers, up 21% from last fall's debut and topping all of cable during its time period. It stands as the show's most-watched fall premiere since 1999.
UPDATE: I've learned Paramount's top execs missed last night's South Park episode viciously spoofing Steven Spielberg and George Lucas for "raping" Indiana Jones in the studio's summer fourquel. No, I mean really recreating those rape scenes from Clockwork Orange, The Accused and Deliverance and scattering them throughout as the "B" story in "The China Probrem" episode about the racist "horror" of the post-Olympics Chinese taking over the world. My info is that Paramount will look into this on Friday with parent company Viacom which produces the savage adult toon.
I learned about the episode, watched it online, and thought OH MY GOD.
Remember how Tom Cruise was upset with Viacom for South Park's airing of the infamous "Trapped in the Closet" episode? I can't begin to imagine what Brad Grey and Rob Moore, and Spielberg and Lucas, will say to Viacom. After all, the DVD of Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull comes out in just days. And Paramount confirmed to me this week that an Indiana Jones 5 is a very, very real possibility and Lucas has already begun development on it.
UPDATE: Sony Offers 'Sit Down, Shut Up!' Writers $200K Extra; Two Scribes Hold Out For WGA Jurisdiction; WGA Wishes All "Had Stuck Together" To Win Coverage
UPDATE: So now I know the real deal. After lying to the writers of the Sit Down, Shut Up! primetime animated series that it would be a WGA show, and then watching those same writers stalk off the IATSE toon, Sony offered a sweetened deal -- including payments of as much as $200,000 of additional compensation through a blind script deal -- to convince some of the scribes to come back.
Most of the writers -- including Josh Weinstein, Rich Rinaldi, Aisha Muharrar, Alex Herschlag, Laura Gutin, Dan Fybel, Aaron Ehasz, Michael Colton, and John Aboud -- wound up coming back. Two -- Bill Oakley and Ken Keeler -- are still holding out for WGA jurisdiction of the show. That's not going to happen because the toon is back in production.
There are conflicting accounts coming in to me about exactly what the Sony deal contains. Some sources say one still unresolved issue is WGA plan health and pension benefits. Other insiders tell me that's been resolved. In the letter sent to me by some of the returning WGA writers, no mention of this is made. "Though the program will be produced under the jurisdiction of IATSE Local 839, The Animation Guild (TAG), we have achieved Writers Guild of America (WGA) parity in key areas such as auditable residuals, new media, script fees, merchandising rights as well as a guarantee that these ... 'SIT DOWN, SHUT UP!' SAVED! Sony & Some WGA Writers Reach Compromise On Employment Contract For IATSE Toon
Having been the first to break the initial story of the WGA writers' walkout on Sony's Sit Down, Shut Up!, and then to follow the controversy (see my posts below), I was given this statement below. I'm thrilled to see enough give-and-take by Sony and some of the writers on this animated primetime show for Fox so a lot of peoples' jobs above and below the line are saved. But what horseshit for Sony to have kept whining it couldn't change the toon's jurisdiction without getting sued by IATSE. (As if...) And it's important to note that two of the toon's scribes, Bill Oakley and Ken Keeler, are still holding out for WGA jurisdiction. I commend them but I also can't condemn those who went back, either. This was their fight, not mine.
Here's what the writers going back have to say:
After five weeks of negotiations, we have accepted employment as writers for Sit Down, Shut Up! under a new contract.
Though the program will be produced under the jurisdiction of IATSE Local 839, The Animation Guild (TAG), we have achieved Writers Guild of America (WGA) parity in key areas such as auditable residuals, new media, script fees,
