UPDATES Why Karma Is A Bitch For Marc Shmuger
Universal City, CA (October 5, 2009) – Adam Fogelson has been named Chairman, Universal Pictures.
In addition, Donna Langley, has been named Co-Chairman, Universal Pictures. Rick Finkelstein, already the Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer, Universal Pictures will work closely with both as a key strategic advisor. The announcements, which are effective immediately, were made today by Ron Meyer, President and COO, Universal Studios.
Fogelson, who will report to Meyer, will be responsible for Universal’s worldwide Motion Picture Group. He will oversee all aspects of the company’s global theatrical operations, home entertainment, partnerships and licensing, finance, HR and communications.
“Adam is a natural leader with a unique ability to anticipate our audience, understand our business and collaborate with our filmmakers to give us a competitive advantage. He is well-respected within our community, deservedly so, and together with this team, I believe we are strategically poised for our future,” said Meyer.
Langley will report to Fogelson, and will work with him on developing Universal’s business and production strategies. She will continue to oversee all production, and will also assume responsibility for Focus Features and Working Title films.
Finkelstein, who will report to Meyer, will serve as a key business partner to both Fogelson and Langley. He will continue to have executive oversight for worldwide home entertainment, television distribution, business affairs and strategic alliances.
Meyer added, “Together Adam, Donna and Rick are proven leaders with the right combination of strong talent relationships and business acumen, as well as creative and commercial instincts. The depth of experience of these three executives gives me tremendous confidence in the future success of our business and I trust them to lead this organization in today’s ever-changing media environment.”
The team replaces Marc Shmuger and David Linde who previously served as Chairs for the Studio.
Meyer continued, “Marc and David have made an extraordinary contribution to Universal Pictures for which we are all very grateful. We had our two most profitable years ever under their stewardship and they have been extremely successful expanding key partnerships and building our global business.”
Fogelson said, “I couldn’t be more proud that Ron and the company have entrusted me to run Universal Pictures. To continue to work with the best team in the business is an extraordinary opportunity for which I am sincerely humbled. I am grateful for this new challenge and to be collaborating with Donna and Rick, my colleagues for whom I have tremendous respect.”
Langley said, “Universal has an extremely strong legacy and I look forward to expanding my leadership role and shaping the future of this company. I feel so fortunate to work with the most dedicated and passionate production team as well as the best creative talent in the industry.”
Finkelstein said, “This business is changing and this presents real opportunity to adapt our business model to successfully respond to the changing media and economic landscape while still maintaining our quality and creativity.”
Shmuger and Linde jointly added, “We’re extremely proud to have had the opportunity to lead such an amazing team at Universal and we're proud of the work we accomplished together. While we will miss serving with our colleagues in these positions we look forward to future endeavors with Universal.”
Folgelson has served as President of Marketing and Distribution since October, 2007 when he assumed executive oversight of Universal’s domestic marketing and distribution operations and marketing and distribution for Rogue Pictures. Having joined Universal in 1998 as VP, Creative Advertising, he became President of Marketing 2002. Prior to working at Universal, he was Senior Vice President, Worldwide Marketing for Trimark Pictures. Earlier, he was Vice President of the AFA Company, a production marketing and distribution consulting firm, where his clients included Carolco Pictures and Nelson Entertainment.
During his tenure Fogelson has supervised the marketing campaigns for some of Universal’s most highly successful franchises including: American Pie, Meet the Parents, Fast & Furious, and The Bourne Identity. Fogelson also oversaw campaigns for such films as Ray, The 40-Year Old Virgin, 8 Mile for which he and his colleague Eddie Egan were named Entertainment Marketer of the Year by Advertising Age, Knocked Up, The Break Up, Wanted, Strangers, Dawn of the Dead, and Mamma Mia!. He also helped create the campaign for Universal's Tony Award-winning smash Broadway musical hit Wicked. In 2009, Fogelson was again named Entertainment Marketer of the Year by Advertising Age which recognized his ability to successfully open a distinctly diverse slate of films across genres and for all audiences.
Langley has served as President, Production since January 2005. During her tenure she has been responsible for 14 films that have surpassed the $100 million mark in domestic grosses. Langley joined the company in 2001 as Senior Vice President of Production. While at Universal she has overseen some of Universal’s biggest commercial and critically-acclaimed successes including Mamma Mia!, Wanted, Knocked Up, American Gangster, United 93, The Break Up, and homegrown hit franchises including the Bourne franchise, Fast & Furious and Meet the Fockers. She played a key role in attracting some of the industry's top filmmakers to do business with Universal including Michael Mann, Judd Apatow, Ron Howard, Ridley Scott, Clint Eastwood and Spike Lee. Before joining Universal Pictures, Langley served as Senior Vice President, Production, at New Line Cinema where she oversaw such hits as Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.
Finkelstein has been Vice Chairman, Universal Pictures and Executive Vice President, Universal Studios since July 2006. Previously he served as president and COO of Universal Pictures since 2000. He is responsible for special projects for Universal Studios president and COO Ron Meyer and oversees worldwide home entertainment and the television distribution activities of Universal Pictures. Key deals under his tenure are a $500 million pact with Relativity Media to finance upward of 40 films over three years, a groundbreaking $100 million licensing arrangement with cabler FX for 15 titles, including present release The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and the megadeal with HBO. Finkelstein also represents Universal on the board of directors of the Motion Picture Association of America. In 2008, Finkelstein was recognized by variety as a key industry dealmaker in the annual dealmakers impact report.

Focus and Working Title will be out the minute they can wind those losing units down
Adam is amazing. This so great for Universal.
I absolutely love Adam Fogelson—he’s a fantastic manager, wicked smart, and truly grew up in this business and just gets it.
Universal Pictures is in fantastic hands with Adam at the helm.
Folks in the UP marketing department are rejoicing as I type.
Welcome to Universal Pictures/Working Title Films/Focus Features,
Mr. Fogelson and Ms. Langley! I’m glad both you and Donna are now building Universal Studios and their specialty/arthouse brand, Focus, for the future.
Welcome aboard!
Congrats to Adam – a great, smart guy.
He referred my company to a studio VP over 10 years ago, which resulted in a still-ongoing business relationship. Always had great experiences in my dealings with him.
Adam is truly amazing. The studio is in great hands with him in charge. Could not be happier to watch what happens!
I interviewed with Mark Schumucker and found him to be arrogant, mean spirited, and the epitome of all the things I detest about the ‘biz’–Karma’s a bitch and it just so gratifying to see the hubris humbled.
Judging by the comments, this Adam fellow seems pretty popular.
I wish him and the rest of the new crew luck. They’re going to need it with the current state of Universal Pictures.
Great executive, nice guy. Congratulations Adam!!
Adam is an extraordinary person. I look forward to what Universal will do under his leadership
Lamentably, though, Adam’s ascent leads to the promotion of the single most wildly out-of-touch human I’ve ever had the honor of observing to the helm of Uni marketing, one Maria Pekurovskaya…
Sell your stock. Quickly.
I HEART ADAM FOGELSON
Donna Langley is down-to-earth and no bullshit. When scripters/directors bemoan the fact that there “aren’t any execs in Hollywood with a brain in their head,” a quick, “What about Donna Langley?” has the same effect as reminding people of Cronenberg’s “The Fly” when they say there’s never been a good horror remake.
Everyone knows Donna’s an ace. Just, usually, that’s not what gets you upped in Hollywood.
Hopefully Adams first order of business will be to completely overhaul the creative advertising team, the creative has been uninspired, the enviornment is political as all hell and riddled with “nepotism”..Maria will understand the Nepotism comment as will every other trailer house in the business.
So they replaced one marketing weenie with another marketing weenie? Marketing is not film making.
“That girl running creatve?” Are you kidding me? There will be overhaul, but not by getting rid of her. He put her there for a reason, folks. She’s going up, not down.
Oh angry, jealous trailer-house guys making comments – very amusing.
Maria’s going up, not down?
Did Workshop Creative post this?!
Worked with Donna at the very beginning of her career at New Line. She was a sweetheart, smart and straightforward. Love to see good people go places.
in all seriousness someone at Universal should look into their policy of allowing executives to supplement their salary with additional income from their spouses company that they assign all their trailer work to. Just look at said agencies website, 95% Universal.
Eddie Egan has been president of marketing with Adam for some time. He’s a strong executive with great instincts.
Universal marketing is left in great hands with Eddie Egan.
Nothing will change. And that’s a very good thing. Universal marketing is not broken.
Eddie Egan is top notch. As is Adam. Good decision.
Great Job Adam! Always a pleasure to work with! And, Donna I always look forward to your call!
But, sad David was axed in the process, I always had good dealings with him personally.
On the other hand I am jumping up and down with Joy in regards to Shmuger!! I agree with everyone else, he is a terrible person and an even worse manager. Shmuger is really the devil disguised in a suit; may he have a nice trip back to Hell where he belongs and hopefully STAY there!! Payback is a bitch Dickhead!
Adam is a standup guy and a true professional, he will do well. However, Maria Pekurovskaya will either be his undoing or she will inevitably rise to the same level of incompetence as Marc. You can only blame the big dogs for so long, there’s lots of blame in the middle…
Why does everyone keep using the word ‘creative’ when talking about studio marketing? There hasn’t been a creative campaign in years!
Let’s see now…The print campaign: use a star’s head shot with a body double strip…Outdoor – buy billboards near the director’s and producer’s house…Newspaper ads: use fake quotes…do a trailer using the best 3 takes in the movie and really loud music…hire some bloggers…there…your done!… oh also ..don’t forget to run some lame academy consideration ads!
New bosses don’t change the fact Universal is under performing in theaters. Nor does it move it into the future of entertainment. Shareholders should jump ship now.
Duplicity…..Maria
State of Play…..Maria
Land of the Lost….Maria
Bruno…..Maria
Funny People…..Maria
Upcoming Flop Couples Retreat…Maria
sure she has had some previous hits, but your only as good as your last movie. and in this case your last 6..
Adam. you’re in charge now, time to make the tough decisions.
Let’s consider for a moment Maria Pekurovskaya and her well-known relationship (personal and business) with Workshop Creative…
Hey, GE, is that the Spirit, or the Letter?
had the pleasure of meeting adam this past year and all i can say is he’s one keen and humbled executive….he was still president when i met him and despite the huge title, showed complete attention and sincerity during our meeting. he’s a very sharp, forward thinker and obviously ambitious individual. well deserved on his promotion and i know he will re-vamp universal to be on top again.
go adam and your team!
Studio execs guilty of nepotism? Gosh golly, what will come next?!!
A smart woman, who has had a meteoric rise since being a producer on the vendor side, of course she’s the one you’re after. The amount of vitriol and bitterness is quite unreal.
Oh wait a minute, they’re not actually – hacks are always bitter. Nevermind, carry on.
Oh crap. No Land of the Lost 2?
All this bitching about Maria is pathetic, and probably from one person using a bunch of different names. I understand that you’re bitter because she won’t give you work. I know you’d like to think it’s because you’re not sleeping with her. Guess what, it’s probably because you suck.
She works with plenty of vendors. She works with the last two that I have been at, and neither of those were Workshop.
Every creative executive has their favorite shops to work with. Maria may use Workshop a lot, but so what? They’re fucking good. Which is why almost every studio in town is working with them.
The bottom line is that if you do good work, studios will come to you. If you spend all day complaining on the internet, they probably won’t.
What happened to the days of keeping creative in-house???????? She’s gotta be responsible for at least 1% of Universal’s unemployment.
I see I’m not the first former New Liner to stop by to wish Donna Langley the best. Congrats and good luck!!
Wow, someone really has a bone to pick with Maria. And a lot of time to sign in under multiple names.
Lame.
Get a life. And get into a new field if you’re work isn’t good enough to survive in this one.
According to the press release, Langley “will continue to oversee all production…”
Isn’t that what got them into this mess?
Yes, but they always blame the Marketing guys. How about the idiots in Universal Development that brought you “Land of the Lost” and “Werewolf”?
They all still have their heads firmly attached.
I wonder if GE is aware of Maria’s very illegal scam… giving lots of work to the company her husband owns so the marketing funds she controls end up in her personal bank account. I know Adam is well aware of all this as is Ron Meyer and yet they promote her? Makes you wonder what is really going on over there?
Hey, let’s be real about Maria. Whether or not you like her personally, there are two indesputable facts. First, she gives the majority of the work under her control to her husbands company, Workshop Creatlive. While he is a good creative, that practice clearly falls under conflict of interest rules in most corporations, especially publc ones and I believe is illegal under sec rules. Second, she really is quite an out if touch creative who’s recent track record, as posted earlier, confirms. She was mediocre at Sony as well as Ant Farm. The real powerhouse creative at Uni marketing for the past 7 years at Uni marketing has been Frank Chiocchi. Unfortunately, just as with Shmuger, the wildly unqualified person us being promoted, and the truly outstanding executive is being denied their well earned position as perhaps President of Creative Advertising. Although Adam is well liked and mostly qualified for his new post, the transparantly political move of taking yes girl Maria with him could prove to be planting the seeds of a fatal error in judgement. Let’s hope that Adam lives up to the responsibilities of his new post and makes what might be hard but beneficial choices for the company. Learn from your predecessor Adam. These opportuiities don’t grow on trees and are to be taken with humility and respect for the health of the company. Good luck and turn that place around!!!
You believe it’s illegal under sec rules?
Oh, you do?
Well, cool. When your dumb ass is bounced out of the business because no creative executives want to work with you, you can become a lawyer for the SEC.
Unless, of course, they require you to be intelligent… or to know how to spell… or to have any fucking idea what you’re talking about.
Please post the relevant section from the “sec rules”. Or, barring that, just go back to sucking at your job… but do it quietly.
Maria is smart, creative, talented and she doesn’t give you work. That’s reason enough to hate her.
As someone who gets work from her, and I DON’T work at workshop I think she’s nothing but fair and honest. She pays her bills and she gives clear direction unlike most clients.
You should be using your time learning how to make better trailers so maybe she’d work with you instead of complaining about all the work you’re NOT getting. I thought Bruno was the most innovative campaign of the year it’s not her fault the movie sucked.
By the way all you new liners, you may love Donna but I think she’s responsible for the failure of movies like land of the lost and state of play and not the poor folks left to market them.
I like Adam, he is great with talent and extremely intelligent. I am actually saddened by his promotion though, since he will be the next scapegoat for Universal’s abysmal creative production side and be most likely fired within 2 years, which is just wrong.
At least they can’t blame the nightmarish movie “Werewolf” on Adam….or maybe they will anyway.
Maybe Uni’s dismal place in market share should inspire a more aggressive approach in actually trying to market their product rather than sitting back hoping for success…Adam!
FOGELSON’S IN AT THE HEAD,
LANGLEY’S #2 WITH GOOD CRED.
THE STUDIO GETS A CLEANING.
AND UNI MUNCHINKS ARE SINGING:
DING DONG, THE SHMUGER IS DEAD!
I don’t understand the argument that Workshop only gets work from Universal because of their relationships, I just looked at their website and there’s work from Sony, Disney, Fox, Warner Bros., Dreamworks, Paramount, New Line, Fox Searchlight, ABC, Lifetime…unless you’re suggesting…OH MY GOD THEY’RE SLEEPING WITH EVERYBODY!!!!!!
Maria is a marketing genius. It’s not her fault Universal produced some cr*p movies this past year. And by the way, to whatever dork mentioned the Spirit and the Letter, the Spirt and the Letter expressly states that contracting with a related party is NOT explicitly prohibited if disclosed to management, which it was. If you are going to be a nerd and mention GE policy documents, at least quote them correctly. Plus the statement that 95% of Universal’s work goes to Creative is a gross overstatement. You should all get a life and let Maria do her job, which in my opinion is fantastic in light of what she’s had to work with this year.
wow Uni Legal Chick, read how you stated your position, I’m glad your not my legal chick.
…expressly states that contracting with a related party is NOT explicitly prohibited if disclosed to management…
There are many things so wrong with this. One, did anybody question the impact this would have on the staffs perception of this arrangement? That it reeks of a nod and a wink to what the rules are for executives and what the rules are for rank and file?
…to management. Now I bet that was an oath taken deposition when Management was quizzed about this disclosure.
Bigger picture for me, were stars, film makers, managers, agents and lawyers of talent associated with the numerous flops handled by this executive aware of this “disclosure” ?
My guess, probably not.
Legal Chic, how about RIGHT and WRONG? Have you ever heard of that. How about taking your position as an exec in this town or just as a person who some people look up to and setting an example as a team player, and not just think of how something is going to benefit YOU. How about looking at it and saying “I have the Legal right and permission to do this honey but it may set a bad example to the people I work with and may just well…..look bad” Did that ever cross your legal mind? Uni Legal Chic. You legal people get so caught up in words and crap that you forget RIGHT and WRONG. Even with the excuse that her baby daddy has a company that does great work, can’t you see how WRONG it is to directly benefit from sending work there. She should be SETTING an example not MAKING one.
go get ‘em Gal!! Talent always beats bullshit. Congrats Donna
Wow her husband must have nothing better to do than defend her all day on this thread. Is he nervous now that its all out in the open.
She never has to use the in-house department ever again…the question that will remain forever is this.. why does she have to use workshop. Ethics is all were talking about. The view is that People have lost there Jobs because of her decisions. People that she use to work with at her “Prized Vendors” Can you honestly argue the fact that what she is doing, Legal or not, looks completely horrible and questionable in times of a bad economy, GE wanting to cut costs and close friends and co workers loosing there jobs. C’mon
I’m a little late to the game, but Maria’s husband wouldn’t lower himself even participate in this crap. Anyone who knows him knows he’s bigger than that. Workshop does GREAT work. That’s why they are given projects from everyone. Sorry, but this seems like a witch hunt. Don’t you have anything better to do (I know, I’m writing too). I’m just very angry. Maria can only do so much with what she is given and I think she’s doing a great job and is smart, competent and completely qualified for her position.
Give Maria a break – she learned the business from Dana Precious, who did the exact same thing at Sony. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Word is: big changes coming for the Marketing team. Most of the group is a holdover from Schmuger’s days running the team. Adam now has free reign. Watch out folks.
As someone who’s worked with Maria many times, it’s clear that those who are criticizing her don’t know her very well. I’m sorry your business is failing, but it’s not Maria’s fault – you apparently just aren’t talented enough. Try another line of work.
Here’s all you need to know: the people that matter (Adam Fogelson, Donna Langley, Eddie Egan, Ron Meyer) know that Maria is talented and ethical. The people that don’t matter…don’t matter.
Adam would do well to look at the TV side of NBCU. Movies today are all about building, launching and managing brands. The “big open” is only a means to the end of fueling the rest of the value chain. TV is where the profits are coming from on Lankersham. Do something bold (like Disney installing Rich Ross) and shake things up!
Rob ranting as “Sec Commissioner”, “ex-sonyite”, “enough is enough”, and even “Uni Legal chic” ?!!!
Wow. He really is creative! Understandable though, I’d defend my wife and biggest client too.
Especially when my other clients were squeezing the crap out of my billing.
Libel: To be deemed libelous under California Civil Code Section 45, the defamatory statement must constitute a false and unprivileged publication by writing, printing, picture, effigy, or other fixed representation to the eye, which exposes any person to hatred, contempt, ridicule, or disgrace, or which causes a person to be shunned or avoided, or which has a tendency to inure a person in his or her occupation.
Enough is enough. Congratulations Adam and Donna. The end. Let’s put an end to these inane postings.
Adam was fantastic from day one. Some how he brings people together and is just what Uni needs. I have worked with Maria many many times and she is very creative. I don’t think she likes me much but she knows exactly what she is doing. She is somewhat frustrating at times but in the bay I can tell you that when she is onboard with your ideas, she will fight to the death for a good idea, testing results or not.
When I was a studio exec, I would choose a vendor I knew would do a great job,
cover my butt creatively and open my movie – I wouldn’t care if it was my Aunt,
my Uncle or my second cousin twice removed. I can understand how it can ruffle
some feathers- but I’m not sure it’s a hanging offense.
