Land of the Lost, Year One…
Somebody please shoot me. What’s next, a remake of the live-action Flinstones movie?
Let no one EVER again doubt the power of Betty White
Sandra Bullock, America’s Sweetheart. The viral video said it as a joke, but in some ways it’s very true. At any given time there are maybe 5 actress in Hollywood that are legitimate box office pulls and Sandra is one of them.
Good for sandra and Ryan. Love the two of them.
People who pay to see Year One should be ashamed of themselves.
@wellaway
There’s only five because that’s the narrow field the oligarchy allows. Decreased number of chances = decreased success. Imagine a world where Will Ferrell, for example, tanks a film so they say male leads can’t open a film and permit only one or two to occasionally squeak through.
Good for The Proposal. However, it would be nice if a female lead film could be about something other than a wedding once in a while.
What a blow for Michael Cera and Jack Black! They can’t even beat a competing comedy that’s been out for two weeks and has no stars in it.
Would have to assume that Black’s quote just nose-dived and Cera’s momentum just completely stalled.
Chicks will see anything…
SO HAPPY THAT THE PROPOSAL MADE OVER 30 MILLION. Sandra and Ryan are just terrific actors
SPOILER ALERT
Saw THE PROPOSAL last night. Enjoyable for the most part. Reynolds is a very good comedic actor, gets all his laughs. Bullock is fine, but it’s impossible to believe that the handsome young Reynolds would declare his love, in typical RomCom fashion, for the middle-aged Bullock, who, though looking good, plays a nasty, hateful bitch. Yeah, sure, she finds her humanity, but still, he chooses her over the luscious Malin Akerman!!! Really??!!!
Next up was YEAR ONE, better in concept than execution. Not bad, but not really good. I like Black and Cera so it was watchable. Some laughs, but don’t go expecting much.
Sorry but I don’t get Sandra. A box office pull? Give me a break. She may be a nice person but, as an actress, nice ain’t the word for it.
No doubt that “Bachelorette” tie in with the real life proposals helped gain awareness
It’s a fun movie; a throwback to cute, fun and inoffensive humor and that’s just fine by me. Sandra Bullock deserves her success and while “America’s Sweetheart” can be a daunting title, in her case, it’s true.
Best Supporting Actress Oscar consideration for Betty White please.
Yep! Sandra is officially an American sweetheart! And I for one..am very happy for her. She still got the goods and she does deliver everytime!
if sandra is such a reliable draw, how come it’s been 10 years since she last opened a movie at number #1? anyways proposal looked generic and lame.
I didn’t realize Betty White was in the proposal. But, sure enough, she is. And, surprisingly – not a joke – that is a draw. I’ve enjoyed Betty in damn near everything she’s done, fantastic in Boston Legal, and one of the best roast comedians I’ve ever seen.. (when she goes Blue in a rant, it’s liquid-out-the-nose funny) I’ll have to see it now.
I think this proves that women don’t go to the movies anymore, and that America just wants insipid dialogue w men punching each other wearing spandex suits and a cape.
wellaway, last hit she had was 7 years ago.
“At any given time there are maybe 5 actress in Hollywood that are legitimate box office pulls and Sandra is one of them.”
The reason for this is that in the past five years, the studios have cut production for female driven movies significantly THEREFORE less female talent is able to develop. For instance, Julia Roberts co-starred in two or three movies before PRETTY WOMAN, she had a chance to develop her talents with movies like MYSTIC PIZZA and even, STEEL MAGNOLIAS (never a fan of this movie, but Julia was amazing in it).
As female characters have become 2nd class citizens in today’s cinema (Hollywood), the next Julia Roberts is most likely getting her start in television, if she’s lucky and smart. And it’s still very tough to make the transition from TV acting to film.
Haven’t seen Sandra in a while and this was a nice flick! Ryan was dependable as always. Nice movie!
@Enough, what about a live-action version of The Flinstones Meet The Jetsons?
That was one of my favorite animated movies when I was young. Besides, has anyone even done a live-action version of the Jetsons? It’d perform better than Land of the Lost, Bewitched or Lost in Space. God, I’d love to see it.
Yay, go sandra! she’s a good egg.
I love a good romantic comedy. So few lately. The Proposal was well executed and I appreciated it. It’s been a desert out there. And a dose of Betty White too…hooray!
AHHHHH, I don’t know why but I was hoping the Sandra Bullock movie would bomb. Why? The movie looks generic. I have lost faith in humanity.
“That was one of my favorite animated movies when I was young. Besides, has anyone even done a live-action version of the Jetsons? It’d perform better than Land of the Lost, Bewitched or Lost in Space. God, I’d love to see it.”
Give it time. Robert Rodriguez is working on it.
Men really are sick miserable creatures. Any time a female driven movie is a big deal, you all come out in droves spewing hate and hissing fangs.
Some of these hate comments for Bullock are likely plants from those involved with Hangover, or that Stone Age movie, but even then the shenanigans are from men.
Relax, dudes. Your balls are still there. Cause everything on the planet relates back to your dicks, and they’re precious and fragile and easily frightened, riiight?
Sandra Bullock rocks. Women are a powerful force that, yes, stopped going to movies long ago because there’s nothing to see except farty guys doing stupid farty things with other farty guys.
The only female driven movies are always about a wedding. What a joke.
Again, men are joyless stupid miserable creatures who take all the fun and spirit out of life between all your crimes, and violence, and catastrophic business dealings, and just plain ….hate for sport.
I saw The Proposal last year(free screening) and I loved the movie. Betty White was terrific and the best part of the movie. Ryan Reynolds was quite funny and I thought Sandra looked great in this(and she played her part well). I am happy it is doing well.
Saw “The Proposal” — terrific chemistry between leads, some clever banter, funny supporting performances. Just a solid, well-made rom-com.
As for Ms. Bullock (and the haters
, she’s a terrific physical comedienne, super likable and willing to take risks (see “Infamous”). Time will bear out her place among the best romantic comedy leads… Everyone seems to forget that “Bringing Up Baby” was a bomb in 1938 rendering Katharine Hepburn “box office poison.” Now “Bringing Up Baby” is in the iMDb top 250 (though barely, I acknowledge).
Romantic comedies are rarely respected in the eras they’re made.
wait… The PROPOSAL kicked YEAR ONE’S ass?
But I thought women couldn’t open movies? Oh yeah… MAMMA MIA!, SATC, BRIDE WARS, 27 DRESSES, HE’S JUST NOT THST INTO YOU, ENCHANTED, OBSESSED, BABY MAMA, HOUSE BUNNY, JUNO, HANNAH MONTANA, WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS…
When do female movies NOT make money? And all those movies cost less than LAND OF THE LOST.
Have a great weekend!
Comments so far have included “generic” which I take to mean, “We’ve seen this before and there will be nothing new.” And you know those who made this comment are correct. We’ve seen this type of film many times, but what’s the difference if it was a chick flick or guy who blows up everything in sight film? I haven’t seen too many original movies in a long time anyway. So frankly, who gives a damn if it’s generic?
What’s important is does it answer the questions I might have when deciding to recommend a film to friends. Did it make me laugh? Was it romantic? Hey, it’s supposed to be a romantic comedy so I guess that’s what I’m looking for in a film like that. So I can say that it does both. I l enjoyed it. It was funny,I laughed a lot and in one part I actually shed a little tear.
Betty White was marvelous as always. I like Sandra Bullock’s work. She’s funny and she’s sweet. Why is that a bad thing? She’s in a film, I’ll go see it. Didn’t know much about Ryan Reynolds (sorry a bit out of touch with the “in” crowd I guess) but heck, he has a hot body, can be very funny and looks like he’s a really, really good kisser! May have to check out more of his work in the future!
Oh and all you nasty Hollywood types who want to jump on me for saying he has a nice body and looks like a good kisser… Well, yea, I’ll bet you go see Transformers for the machines and cause Shia LeBeouf is such a great ACTOR! Right! And I’ve got some land in Arizona I could sell ya. We all know you go to a flick like that just to see if some of Megan Fox’s skin will be exposed – so just zip the nasty comments.
I liked it – I’ll be telling all my friends, the gals AND the guys (especially my married male friends – suggesting they take their wives) to go see it – cause they might just get lucky afterwards and we all know that’s ALL you guys really care about anyway.
How can anyone use the term SPOILER ALERT when talking about “The Proposal”? Or “Year One” for that matter?
Is there anyone out there who can’t figure out everything about those movies just from the poster?
A movie doesn’t have to open at number 1 to be popular and a money making one. Its the longevity and how much it made at the end of its run is what matters most
Sandra’s past 30 releases has grossed over 1.2Billion at the B.O with average of 43M per movie and not forgetting, she co-produces most of her own movies.
So lets give credits where its due shall we?
Anyone know why Malin Akerman isn’t in the trailer at all? She has third billing, so what gives?
@ “Sorry but I don’t get Sandra”.–Well, you’re in the minority on that one, that’s ok though.
To others: No one can deliver NON STOP box office blockbusters in this day and age, or ever? But it says A LOT that after all this time people still want to see a movie Sandra is starring in.
I do not like chick flicks but kind of dug the proposal. I will admit I have a crush on Sandra. It was good for what it was.
Year One looks terrible, but who knows.
Ha, ha, ha, I love the ‘excuses’ as to why any movie does well.
Chicks will see anything, it’s a kiddie flick, it had a built-in audience, the geeks came out in droves, testosterone driven, great tie-in, etc…number one, is number one in Hollywood.
“The Proposal”’s opening had just as much to do with Ryan Renolds as it did with Sandra Bullock – maybe even more so. Though he is already quietly becoming a major draw, the Gambit movie will cement his A-list leading-man status.
Edit: “Deadpool”, not “Gambit”.
I honestly don’t get why so many of you WISH AND PRAY that a movie bombs — are you all that pessimistic and hateful? It makes no sense to me, if you don’t like to see a movie, than just don’t see it? But to wish any movie to fail is just mean — there are a lot of people that go into making movies who spend countless days and effort to bring out a good product.
For the record, The proposal was a great, feel good comedy of the year and everyone in our sold out showing LOVED it. don’t miss it!
Even though the film seems totally lame, I’m not surprise by the big draw… Sandra Bullock is lovable as always, along with Ryan Reynolds’ hard rock abs, with a dash of magic from Betty White (who is doing a great promo tour on TV BTW, her staying power in the business in unmistakable,) looks like a winner.
I had a free ticket due to AMC Theater’s Moviewatcher program, and I couldn’t choose between such wonderful fare (sarcasm there). I ended up going to see Hangover because I heard that it was very funny. It was repugnant and the end credits were right out of a porn movie. Add to that the social morons on either side of me who wouldn’t shut up (how do you say STFU in Farsi?) and it was one of the worst filmgoing experiences of my life. Where was the MPAA when they rated the film? What kind of kickbacks did they receive to give it an R rating? And where the heck was the AMC staff when there were at least two to three dozen minors watching the film?
Saw The Proposal last night and I give it a B. It felt like there were two scenes missing. The scene where we see Andrew’s feelings start to change about Margaret, and a needed scene where Margaret gave a piece of her mind to Andrew’s dad.
Otherwise, fluffy. I wish Reynolds was given more to do.
Reynolds was amazing…stole the show!! He is simply amazing. Love Betty White too.
So glad to see a rom/com open at number one….I just wrote a new one and glad to see when they are done well, they can be profitable.
Cynical Americans posting about this morning is sickening. So what, it’s a fairy tail, there is nothing wrong with watching a story that has been told before with actors who are charming and just enjoy their presentation of it.
Revivals are common in the theatre and the story and words don’t change much at all.
Sandra Bullock has never looked better and I would never classify her as “middle aged”. Ryan Reynolds is way prettier though and he has been around forEVER, yet he never has broken into the “power circle of leading men”, I am thinking it might now happen until he is “middle aged”.
Agree w Paloma Pigeon –
I was a bit surprised that in A2, instead of developing the love-story betw Sandra B’s char and RR, they dev a “love-story” betw Sandra B and RR’s FAMILY(and ex gf). Are we that cynical, that we can’t have 2 or 3 more scenes in A2 of two people falling in love? And also the flip of an older women and younger man falling in love (boss and asst) could have been interesting to explore more — I wonder if a woman wrote this (or at least did some rewrites), would it have been, dare I say, a bit deeper movie?
But still, I’m thrilled at the success and enjoyed most of it! (I am a writer and have to complain about something).
Go see it!!
re: “Anyone know why Malin Akerman isn’t in the trailer at all? She has third billing, so what gives?”
her role was much larger originally, but most of it landed on the cutting room floor. but she was contractually locked in for third billing.
Sandra Bullock looks younger and fresher than Reynolds who is already losing his hair, and who is not so young [in his 30s.]
He has a hot hot body though. They should’ve shown more – the promise of his brief nudity was one of the draws for seeing this movie [the main one was Bullock and not having to watch a bunch of boring ugly guys get sooo wasted in Vegas for the umpteenth time. Hilarious that all the pencil pricks whine about this movie having been done so many times. How many times have we been tortured with the same dude/drunk/stripper crapfest. ]
Nikki,
You get sick more than any other person on the planet! You really need to take better care of yourself.
I’m kinda surpriesed The propoasl opened as big as it did. I thought that Sandra was getting a little long in the tooth to not only pull off yet another formulatic high concept romantic comedy, but also when you consider the fact that her romantic male lead was in was in high school when Speed came out. Go figure.
I expect All About Steve (with another romantic lead 10 years her junior) to open big this September. Can lightning strike twice in the same year for Sandra?
Was sort of dragged to this on a date night, but have to admit it was really funny. Formula sure, but who cares for this kind of film. Sandy looks amazing (with and without clothing). On a side note, huge laughs on the “Old Dogs” trailer.
Love her, I’m sure you wanted more nudity from Ryan Reynolds’ “hot hot body”, but are you not aware this film was made/distributed by Disney?
Ironic how you end of complaining about strippers though…
IMO, Sandra Bullock is one of those actresses that you just can’t help but like. There are not many actresses – or even actors – that have that likability factor. You either have “it” or you don’t. And it’s good seeing her in a comedy again rather than those lame dramas that was dragging her down.
Comment by BS you forgot TWILIGHT! My Big Fat Greek Wedding…there’s a ton of “girl” films that made money. But you’d never know it if you didn’t pay attention. the same peeps that go see Star Trek deny it as they deny the females in that movie got a raw deal? A green slutty girl?? really? and Uhora pining after Spok????? Gimme a f-kin break!
Glad to see Sandra is back, she is a rarity in HW in that she didn’t let success go to her head and she seems like a genuinely nice person. People like that.
Where art thou Roberts, Ryder, and Paltrow?
I went to the THE PROPOSAL to see Sandra and Betty.
The movie was alright. It was good to see Sandra
have a hit and Betty no matter what she is in its a plus.
@Men are Sick Hateful Creatures
If women stopped going to the movies, then how the hell do you explain Twilight ??!!
Hangover is the story of the summer. Funny premise, great actors, good script. That’s all it takes people.
I only go to the movie theatre for action movies. The cost for the movies with popcorn etc. is not worth it to see comedies. Those movies look fine on dvd and do not warrant the large screens of the theatre. I always rent comedies and movies that do not need big sound to be good.
Way to go Tess.
When I saw Betty White in the trailer is when I decided I had to see The Proposal. Everything in the script is a ripped off from another movie but women are so starved for some female driven story line they will see this. I wish the idiots at the studios understood that women really like movies. I guess they will call this one a freak accident too. Why not just allow women to work in this industry??? Let them star and write and direct and watch the studios profits go up.
For any and all ripping/complaining about The Proposal – wtf? It was a solid, entertaining movie. Well directed, very well acted, and a welcome reprieve from the dreadful M. McConaughey romantic crapedies of the last few years. Reynolds is a bona fide leading man, in a time when those are in short supply. And Sandra has proved she is a major box office force as a producer and an actress. And I don’t know either of them, so I got nothin’ to gain from this praise! Take that, bitter bastards! And stop being so predictably petty and cynical. That is so May ‘09 of you!
I got a proposal for ya – let’s make this movie disappear in a week’s time.
I saw The Proposal at the Arclight in Sherman Oaks and the audience howled with laughter. It’s amazing how the snooty critics that panned this movie are so out of touch with the audience these days.
Bullock and Reynolds were great and Betty White was hilarious. This one’s a hit.
Yawn. Wake me when “Public Enemies” opens.
“AHHHHH, I don’t know why but I was hoping the Sandra Bullock movie would bomb. Why? The movie looks generic. I have lost faith in humanity. Comment by JERRY — June 20, 2009 @ 1:53 pm”
Actually Jerry,
Humanity had a meeting last week and we decided you’ve been slacking. You’ve got 6 months to turn it around or we’re going to have to let you go.
I’m a big fan of Sandra Bullock – and her movies – loved Miss Congeniality, The Lake House, Speed, and the one where the guy loses his memory in Chicago, with Bill Pullman – can’t remember the name of that one. And I really enjoyed The Proposal – I laughed, I cried and sat there til the very last closing credit. That said, I think Ryan Reynolds totally stole the movie away from her! There’s a subtlety, believe it or not, to his performance – a warmth and a basic humanity – that makes her performance seem one-dimensional. Or maybe it was her really well-done but a bit taut plastic surgery that made it harder for her to emote?
I went to see YEAR ONE today. It was horrible !
How did this movie ever get made- and why didn’t someone at Sony stop it from getting made. This film
has to be the worst of the year so far. It’s worse than
Land of The Lost. Next Year’s Golden Razzy Awards
is going to Salute YEAR ONE- Yes, it was that bad ! I want my money back from Sony.
A welcome relief and great counter programming The Proposal propels us back in time to when movies actually had leads oozing ‘chemistry’. Not ‘agency’ pairing, not faux but apparently genuine; they both look like they’re having fun. Mix together with 5 star supporting roles, this seemingly by the numbers romcom is anything but; under deft direction that is sparing in it’s intrusion and respectful of the script and talent.
Ms Bullock an underutilised and undervalued star of the first order provides a lesson to all comers, especially the young ‘swing set’ of recent similar genre outings. Ms Bullock’s pairing with Reynolds is a great delight. Reynolds who subtlety in ‘drole playing’ reaches great heights balances his antics with some solid heavy lifting in the father son scenes, where a little says a lot thanks to the sage crustiness of Craig T Nelson. Betty White is a gem, contributing a great deal of warmth with mirth and charm. Mary Steenburgen delivers especially in her scenes with Mr Nelson, both deserve more ‘meat’ in their acting sandwiches in future outings. A Class act pair.
But the film belongs to Ms Bullock who is believable in every inch of her role. Her arc is sad as it is funny and she is very much a stunner of the first magnitude. Ms Bullock also has a knack of making her antics even when semi slapstick both adorable and inventive, despite the at time French farce nature in minor moments.
Could be there was a thirst in the market for this well produced, beautifully mounted production, where the scenery and all departments are shown to their best light.
Whatever it is, it all makes for a great movie, a throwback of a kind to the movies where the fun was innocent, no drugs, no hangovers, no laughing at binges and man-boy antic riddled relationships – do we need expletives?
Just a great movie, fun and enjoyable.
sandra bullock is frickin HOT.
always has been, always will be.
anyone who doesn’t get that is a loon.
i would beat that UP.
I liked the Proposal. Gammy was hilarious with the chanting in the woods. I read on another board the Sandra has had 4 $100million grosses and that his will be her fifth also her movies don’t always opwn big but have legs. Miss Congenality on;y made $14million and ended up over 100. 2 Weeks Notice made it to $93million.
I thought Micheal Cera was a woman when I first saw those Year One ads. I’m not familiar with his work so I was a bit confused. Anyway, I love Sandra and I’m happy for her, she finally got a hit. As for Ryan, love his pecs and biceps. They were especially good in Blade 3. That and Betty White were almost enough to get me to see it. Maybe next week.
All those hating on Bullock need to be a little more careful about their broad generalizations. Look at the numbers on her movies in the last several years – many of them have done quite well given their budgets and their scopes – and continued to delivery profits in ancillary markets after not making a huge flash in domestic b.o.
No, she’s not regularly opening movies atop the b.o., but in an environment that is absolutely not friendly to actress driven films, she has proven her ability over time to continue to make profitable films.
I think she’s very respectable.
wait… The PROPOSAL kicked YEAR ONE’S ass?
But I thought women couldn’t open movies? Oh yeah… MAMMA MIA!, SATC, BRIDE WARS, 27 DRESSES, HE’S JUST NOT THST INTO YOU, ENCHANTED, OBSESSED, BABY MAMA, HOUSE BUNNY, JUNO, HANNAH MONTANA, WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS…
When do female movies NOT make money? And all those movies cost less than LAND OF THE LOST.
Have a great weekend!
Comment by BS — June 20, 2009 @ 5:19 pm
HA!
Thank you, bs!!!
Shove that right up your tight, ignorant jackhole, Jeff Robinov!
RE: Sick Hateful Creatures is a sad and lonely person…
Betty White and Oscar Nunez are the best part of this movie.
Hollywood make note, if done properly a woman in her 40’s can still be a box office draw.
Saw year one — I’ve never seen a movie that isn’t terrible — but just is NOT FUNNY at all, I thought Land of the Lost was a better movie experience. And this comes from the great harold ramis.
Loved the Proposal, still have that great feeling when I think about how great the movie was, so much fun.
Wonder how My sister’s keeper with cameron diaz will do next week.
Nikki: Hope your well. These types of films have been the mainstay in Hollywood since the 30’s. Can’t put a price on chemistry, we bought it! Glad it outperfomred market expectations…Easy to produce, not complicated and provides a nice return on investment. Hollywood take note. Make more of these films at a price…keep the costs down and see what will happen.
Andrew is right that its been a decade since Sandra opened at #1–but its a ridiculous stat–her last 2 major films Premonition (opened against 300) and Miss Congeniality 2 (opened against a Ashton Kutcher/Bernie Mac film) opened in the top 3 in their release weekends. Whats more, like almost all of her films, they made back total budget by the end of week 2.
Its great to be #1 for the weekend, but as a business, doesn’t it matter more that Sandra’s films make their budgets back so quickly?
SANDRA IS HOT! DAMN LOOK AT HER IN THE NEW MOVIE WITH THE RED BOOTS. MOVIE LOOKS HORRIBLE BUT THOSE BOOTS ARE SEXY! RAWR
Men need to grow up ! Any movie that has to do with love and romance they just get their dicks in a twist. Trust me your manhood is still there. GROW UP !
So, Sandra Bullock is not my sweetheart, and doesn’t have to be. She’s still watchable. HOT for her age.
I love to hate romantic comedies, and yet I always watch them… dammit.
LOVED the movie. Sandra can carry a movie b/c she’s a great comedic actress and everyone loves her. I wish hollywood would wake up and stop making romantic movies with really bad actresses who can’t carry a movie like JENNIFER GARNER and MATT MCCONAUGHEY. Jen Garner would’ve NEVER been able to pull this movie off. It’s b/c of Sandra Bullock that we even went to see the film. She’s awesome on and off the screen – super funny and a great, real and genuine personality – nothing fake about her like a Jen Garner type. More Sandra please!
