The two Big Media companies with the worst reputations for both underpaying its employees and pennypinching everyone else are the Walt Disney Co and News Corp. So it continually outrages me how both these corporations overpay their top two bosses. Disney CEO Bob Iger ranks #3 among the 10 highest-paid CEOs for 2008 at Standard & Poor's 500 companies, earning $51.1M. (And let's not forget his "Golden Coffin".) Now News Corp's filings with the SEC show it's throwing money at its new Vice Chairman, President and COO Chase Carey just like it did President/COO Peter Chernin. Carey will receive a salary of $8.1M a year, which nearly quadruples the base pay he received as CEO of DirecTV.
He also received a baseball-like $10M cash signing bonus and use of the corporate or a chartered jet for business and pleasure. Plus, he's eligible for an annual performance-based bonus of as much as $25 million. Oh, and did I mention that News Corp stock has declined 38% in the past year? By contrast, DirecTV paid Carey a base salary of $2.3M last year and his total compensation including stock options was $13M. Meanwhile PaidContent.org says Slingbox co-founder Blake Krikorian is up for the DirecTV job.
Cash & Carey: News Corp's $40M Man?

Class warfare is coming.
A haves vs. have-nots society will not stand.
That’s just gross. Who needs that much money?
This is just sad.
Standard & Poor’s? Oh, the iroy!
Iger should be paid at most $51,000 a year that’s all he’s worth. A thousand dollars a week with just one week of vacation for which he’s not paid. If he wants to earn more than that it should be based on company profits and stock performance only. As for Carey he’s such a schmuck with that stupid mustache. Anyone who looks that dumb should be fired and forced to work some blue collar job for union wage he should be a gaffer or a grip with no seniority at all.
I agree with the above posters. Capitalism should die. Nobody should be paid more than others.
As someone who knows many, many people who work at 20th Century Fox, I could not agree with more about how the regular employees there are screwed to the wall not only on pay, but on the lack of raises, the lack of respect, etc. The big wigs treat everyone there like total crap! And yet they do all the work so Chernin, Carey and the like can talk about how it’s their hard work that makes 20th the company that it is. I’d love to see them do the work of the people under them, much less earn even close to the regular Joe’s salaries. Jackasses!!!!!
It makes me ill.
We pay people outrageous sums for non-life threatening work.
We pay people lousy sums for life threatening work: soldiers, firefighters, police, etc
And we pay people really horribly for life changing work: social workers, child care workers, therapists, teachers, nurses, etc
What’s the deal with our priorities?
As a Fox employee who’s worked for two years, taking on more and more responsibility, under shorter deadlines, with no hope of a raise, I can tell you – this sucks. The only comfort we have at Fox is, we’re one of the few studios who didn’t have layoffs. But the hiring freeze doesn’t help the over-worked and under-paid staff, that’s for sure. And the rotten economy keeps those of us with specialized skills stuck with the company we’ve got. It’s ugly.
Do you know what might make this guy worth this much money? If he changed all that. Sound likely? Or do you think they’ll just keep pumping money into Blu-Ray and sequels?
I don’t know about you, but I’m eating cockroaches to stay alive.
You know, this CEO pay thing is really getting out of control. It really is, I 100% agree with you. Something needs to be done.
The irony is none of these guys can answer the industry’s fundamental question: how do you create successful movies or high-rated TV shows?
Helen,
Because clearly we don’t live in a society that values life, no matter what the Fox Bull**** conservatives might say. Clearly the conservative regime is concerned with only lives that are either underdeveloped or in vegetative limbo. They care nothing for the living who put their ass on the line or seek to make other lives better. Thus the conservative’s should change their name from the Republican party to the Zombie Party. They care about 4 mantra’s they hold to like Zombies: Money, dead babies, almost dead adults, and guns. Oh and let’s not forget they are lead by the greatest Zombie of them all, Lord Jesus who rose from the dead. It’s as insane as Scientology.
Corporatism = Socialism disguised as capitalism.
These CEOs are thieves and should prosecuted as such.
disgusting. utterly disgusting.
As a long-time Fox employee, I’m going to be just furious if I don’t get my bonus this year. I work like a dog for this company and it’s all going into this mustachioed villian’s pocket?
I work at Fox. Ironically before I got a job at Fox, I worked at Disney. Fox, unlike every other studio doesn’t let the crew members, of the various show on the Fox lot, use the Fox Gym. It only for the white collar types. The studios used to be the realm of the various crafts, that actually made the motion pictures and TV shows. The Fox lot, as well as other studios like Warner’s and Disney, has been taken over by the “suits”.
As I wrote once before, Disney gives the highest paid execs, the ones that don’t need it…like Iger, a 30% discount at the studio store. The crews get a 20% discount…
At least at Fox, the employee discount is the same across the board.
isnt this the guy who traded mike piazza to the marlins back in 1998? thank you mr. carey!
I agree the idea of that much money going to one man that has not proved he can do the job outrageous.
The Caretaker
One of the worse things about working at FOX is they pride themselves on running a tight ship (assholes)! They love to say other studios have 10 in that department, FOX has 6 and we make it work!!! To the detriment of their employees yea they make it work. I agree if we don’t get bonuses this year and I doubt we will frankly, let’s picket that jackasses prime parking spot, we all know where it is, same one Chernin never used. Oh btw, I didn’t go to his expensive goodbye bash as I was saying bye to a long time employee who was leaving to go back to school at 46, she had suffered long enough under the lazy leadership. We drank coffee and had chocolates. What went on at Chernin’s??
The worst thing about working at Fox is, I’m glad to be working when a lot of other studios are letting people go all over the place. But a comment above mentioned, Fox does make such a big deal out of having small crews and working them to death for little pay and little incentive (and they tell you to your face that you should be thankful and loyal little soldiers, yet they also tell you to never expect anything from them), across the board. We do the work, not the Chernin’s and Carey’s of the studio, yet they and all the Senior VPs and glory hogs claim how wonderful things are because all of their hard work. Revolution begins from within, I wonder how long it will be until we can’t take it anymore and fight back? Hah! Hopefully there will be money for our unemployment coverage when Fox just fires us all.
