Click here to listen... UPDATE: I've confirmed it's authentic and from the set of Terminator Salvation, the Warner Bros movie coming out this year. Flming at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico on July 18th last year, Bale goes off on the director of photography Shane Hurlbut whom the actor accuses of ruining a scene by walking onto the set. Bale threatens to quit the production if the DP isn't fired. The audio's release may have been an act of revenge: celebrity gossip website TMZ claims that "film execs sent the tape to the insurance company that insured the film in case Bale bailed." This rant took place just days before Christian was questioned by London police about an alleged fracas with his family around the time that The Dark Knight was released. I talked today to a source close to Bale who told me, "Christian and the DP are all good now. It happened. It was one isolated event. He regrets that he lost his temper."
I’m surprised there aren’t more of these types of audio and video samples of stars behaving unprofessionally floating around. It’s good people like you post this stuff Nikki. No one should be spoken to like that. I don’t care the reason. And stars should be accountable to their public when they treat their co-workers abusively.
He’s not saying “Bryce,” he’s saying “Bruce.” The first assistant director was Bruce Franklin and various other Bruces worked on the crew.
Between this and the incident with his family it sounds like he has some serious anger issues.
Sounds to me like the DP was an idiot. This may sound like Christian is being an asshole, but honestly, were we there for 20-30 minute lead up? Could it have been 3am after a 14 hour day and he had the scene rendered useless several times by this guy before blowing his top? Maybe the guy was told not to walk in the shot, semi-politely several times before this. He does say it kept happening. I don’t think people go off like this over someone getting in the shot once. Bottom line…where you there to see the whole thing and understand exactly why he went off so badly? No.
I actually think Bale was in the right here. The shot should NOT start rolling if the lights aren’t ready.
his type of behavior can be a bellwether of family abuse…
Classy.
That’s pretty hardcore when you’re being paid millions of dollars to do a film. Sounds like rage-o-clock. Still, if the DP was amateur, he should’ve been fired.
Sounds like you’ve found SAG’s new negotiator.
TALK ABOUT UNPROFESSIONAL. Any director worth their salt would stand up to that kind of behavior.
I don’t care what was said. This was a private work incident. We do not know the emotional content of the scene. People work in different ways and this was not meant for public consumption. That is why most sets are closed. I am not saying it is OK to talk to Anyone in that manner. I am saying we were not there and it is not our business.
Strange, you would think his use of the ‘f word’ so many times might have given him pause. Or paws.
Christian,
Remember a few weeks ago at your citizenship ceremony, when you got that special place next to all those decorated Soldiers and Marines. Remember how they all shook your hand and looked up to you? Well, after hearing this, mark my words none of them want to shake your hand and America is not happy to have you.
Go back to England and slap your mother and sister around!
Disappointed.
Whoa.
Yes it is from the new Terminator. TMZ has more deets about the audio clip.
It seems this clip was sent to the insurance company that handled the movie since Christian was threating to quit. Thanks to the insurance flunky who released it.
This was also right before Hissy Chrissy went ape shit on his mom & sister.
Also, notice how Christian goes in and out on accents. I heard american, london & cockney accents.
McG was a tool for not putting christian in his place. Weak director if you ask me.
Let’s hope Mr. Bale can stay alive in these big dumb studio franchises because I can’t think of any decent director who would want to have anything to do with this talented schmuck after listening to this. Such a shame that a young man like Bale take for granted all the gifts he has been given. He should leave his personal demons at home with his family and not take it out on those who bust their asses for a living.
Wow. What a monster. Wouldn’t you want someone who cares about the lighting on your set? I mean, yikes. I’m glad he didn’t get nominated for Batman now. This guy is OUT OF CONTROL.
That was awesome. Now, if only Bale would do that while wearing the Bat-suit, that would truly be quite a movie.
WOW. I’d like to see how his agents are gona try to bury this.
Whether he was in the right or not, you just don’t talk to people that way. How disappointing.
This makes the claims by his mother and sister a bit more believable.
I am not an actor but I understand the “emotional” nature of performers and everyone has a temper from time to time. But I’ll be damned if someone talked to me like that and I just stood there and took it. Was this DP that afraid of industry retaliation that he took a verbal beating from another grown man? Is that how spineless these LA men are?
Also, if a beautiful actress like ScarJo had done this I doubt everyone would be giving her a pass.
What a total prick. Shane is a very talented cinematographer, and there is no reason to treat another professional in this manner. I fault the 1st AD for not getting control of this, and the producers for sitting quietly in thier chairs, snuggled around the monitor. Pussies. Funny, the people that make the most in this industry either have the smallest balls, or are the biggest dicks.
There is no excuse for the length of time that this rant went on. This kind of behavior is so accepted that you can hear Bale luxuriating in the fact that he knows he can go on forever. He knows nobody will stop him and his winding himself up. The DP may have done something unprofessional and needed to be called on it, maybe even yelled at. Fired, not so sure. The flare up and cool down is indicative of a classic childish Hollywood prick plain and simple. And I don’t buy that genius has to rage. F that. Bale’s behavior was the more unprofessional because it will never change. The DP got two messages. One. Don’t walk through a scene. Two. Christian Bale is not to be envied after all.
I love how McG stands up for his DP to this child. What a puss. And the fact that there are people excusing this behavior on this board says it all about this biz.
Note to the D.P.:
While the camera is rolling sit with the director behind the monitor.
Do your lighting adjustments between takes. Or tell the actor your going to have to cut. Don’t walk on set and inturupt the actor, while the actor is in the middle of an intense scene.
You’d think at that level, the D.P. would know the rules.
why do you post this. you cant possibly know what led up to this.
A man would have punched that tiny ranting lunatic in the mouth. There are more important things then a job. The guy made a mistake. So what? I didn’t yell at Bale for making the mistake of that silly voice he uses when he’s Batman. Power corrupts…
Nobody posting here knows the background and what may have lead up to that blow up. BUT I DO KNOW THIS: YOU DO NOT STROLL AROUND IN THE ACTORS’ SIGHT LINE DURING A TAKE. Period. There’s no argument there. There’s a lot of dicking around that goes on during shooting & I don’t care how sorry the guy is or what he thought he was doing, it’s just plain unprofessional. I’ve seen stars – good solid as a rock people – blow big because of this. It’s NOT DONE.
Where is the director at moments like this? Is he so terrified of his star quitting that he’ll put up and shut up for anything?
To bad his best performance was on audio tape!
Obviously, as many have said here, we don’t have all the facts, only the leak of this story several weeks ago and now the audio today. If the DP had a habit of doing this already, yes, he was in the wrong. HOWEVER, no one, and I mean NO ONE, has a right to berate another human being like that. But that’s the problem when you’re a successful actor or musician or some powerful businessperson, everybody is afraid to stand up to you. People use their “power” inappropriately ALL the time and get away with it. From this audio, though, I have lost all respect for Bale, that was just classless, arrogant and unbelievable.
Sounds to me like Bale was right and that the crew guy was being an ass.
The crew guy destroyed a probably complicated scene and felt no remorse whatsoever.
Its easy to blame a star but the real question was why wasn’t the director in control of the set ?
I don’t see what the big deal is. In high school, I used to work construction and this happened *all* the time. I was spoken to like this about once a day. It’s not personal, it’s just the way guys talk when they’re working. Any guy who’s ever worked with his hands would think this is perfectly normal. If you’re a union guy and you can’t take talk like that, then find another job.
….of course stupid donkies can be spoken to like that!…just like they did to you!
Note to actors: you’re wired. And if you’re a dick the sound engineer ain’t your friend. Grow up.
How are some of you people defending this? Sure, the DP probably made a mistake, but no human being should treated like that, especially by someone who has one of the easiest jobs on the set, yet gets paid the most. Shame on the director for trying to weasel his way out and letting Bale get away with that nonsense. Bale clearly has anger issues and needs help. Apparently he is not only a phenomenal actor, but also a massive d-bag.
this is so russell crowe throwing a phone meets david o russell going fucking bonkers –
this is crazy – i couldn’t even listen to it all – dp fucked up – his bad – way bale handled – oh shit –
he flipped the fuck out – you can tell he’s never really had to fight much or defend himself –
maybe this is why he’s an awful actor? the batman voice was ridiculous –
this will kill his career and become a cult phenom – oh well he’s rich as shit and can go chill on an island
leave christian alone. we don’t know the full context. if this guy screwed up his shot repeatedly, after a long workday, i’d bet you’d all behave the same way.
What a childish creep!! We should all have such minor problems to rant about. Maybe he needs to donate some time to REAL issues and stop focusing on his insignificant ego. Also, in a REAL workplace, his behavior would have been cause for being fired. He is verbally abusive….and requires anger management.
Such a baby! I feel for the DP. No matter what someone may have done wrong, NO ONE deserves to be spoken to in such a threatening way.
Drug testing for Christian! What a putz. McG too for not standing up for the DP.
Man, this is a mix of thoughts
Seems he reacted in the wrong way, but at the same time it should not have happened
I figure CB was having a bad day and took it out on this fellow, thought the guy was wrong, it was simply the catalyst. CB needs some anger management, nothing wrong with that, but this is the sound of a man who has some serious feelings of inadequacy. The way he speaks, it does not resonate as a person who feels superior, but rather a person who cannot control their exploding behavior.
Wow, all these comments and no one states the obvious, that we all just heard 4 minutes of pure “Roid Rage”.
Did that ripped body come courtesy of alot of hard work and possibly some major juice? Someone should stop him before he ends up hurting someone.
Bale was out of control. The DP was not in the right if he was repeatedly screwing up takes by getting in the shot. But Bale was just as unprofessional for the way he chose to address the problem.
CELEBUTARD
We didn’t see the lead up to this.
It’s not cool to lash out like that, but I wouldn’t start hating on Bale because of it. It’s not like he’s complaining about the Craft table not being stocked with his favorite fruit juice, his scene has evidently been ruined multiple times by the guy.
Crazy is all I can say. Sounded like Bale was about to whoop up on the guy.
You know, I read over and over that no one should be talked to like this. At the end of the day though, I hear talk like this all the time, many times a day.
We just grin and bear it, move along, and get the mission done. I’ve taken my share and when it’s necessary, I dish it out as well.
And as much as I hate to admit it, there is a certain motivational factor that accompanies a good ass-ripping. It does a lot to get people to pull their heads out of their asses and focus.
IMHO, McG (or really the 1st AD) should have been giving the dressing down to his DP for interfering with his actor’s performance. He didn’t step up, because McG is a ‘nice guy’ and it happened enough times that Chris took it upon himself to correct the problem.
Let’s face it, folks don’t threaten to walk for a one time occurrence, no matter how big a prima donna we like to make them out to be.
Good thing Nikki confirmed its authenticity. Without her diligent fact-checking, I would’ve thought it was some other Welsh know-it-all blowing a fuse on the set of T4…
This is classic! Look guys, take it from someone who knows, this is no different than 80-90% of most male stars. The only reason this event sticks out is because Bale was in trouble recently for losing his temper. But on a film set, professionalism takes on many forms. It’s charged with emotion. This could possibly be a method for Bale. Or maybe the production is weighing everything on him and he exploded. It’s a rare outburst, no doubt. But either way, there’s really nothing wrong with this while an actor is working on set. The sound guy and the DP are usually blood brothers on a movie, so it’s no surprise he leaked it to TMZ. The Sound Man should be replaced or sued. Eeveryone is on contract, so leaking and playing this on the internet could be an infringement on the copyright owned by the studio. The Mixer was recording the rant, so it’s obviously an outtake. And all outtakes provided on set recorded by the crew are property to that studio. I would highly doubt the studio contracts don’t cover this. Otherwise every actor would have his day sooner or later. Move on guys. He’s passionate. When he does this at the local restaurant, then by all means, go at him. This is the way it is and the way it’s always been.
Sounds like a crappy film that needed the media publicity by releasing this to the public.
He must have forgotten to take his meds that day; he needs to take his meds everyday without fail.
He devolved into threatening to attack his co worker and his hang up with the F word and body parts is really indicative for the need for continual chemical restraints.
had he had a butcher knife or a gun at hand he would have cut loose on someone. I think he is a danger to himself and his coworkers.
They should have filmed it, this was the best performance from this hack. He threatened to hit him, I thought he only hit women?
What’s a DP and what do they do?
What a prick. Christian Bale….Your a fucking duche. DIE IRL.
Bale stays in character for weeks at a time. That and the punk that kept walking the set made the situation what it is. He’s a brilliant actor but foul mouthed. So what? All great artists are anguished souls. If I want nice I’ll buy a bag of marshmallows.
Wow.. the “starf*cking” going on here is unbelievable. You all would defend an A-List actor if he threw a puppy off a cliff, so I’m not shocked you’re siding with Bale on this argument.
This guy is a jerk. He beat up his mom and sister, do you think he cares about some nobody on his movie set. He is truly an “American Psycho”; no pun intended.
Actors project their self-loathing fears in a variety of ways. Some are more passive-agressive than others. Not in this case.
This example of indescretion exhibits, in my view, Bale’s self-important displacement of the real anger towards himself for being so unfocused/unprepared as to allow a working-class technician/professional to distract him from what is supposed to not only his creative role, but also his leadership role.
He failed, and has shown himself to be an immature pampered brat.
Had I been McG, I would have ordered the key grip to bitch-slapped him. Or done so myself.
It doesn’t matter how late they worked, or how tired they were, or if the DP was something of an amateur, etc. Nobody has the right to humiliate and demoralise someone like that for three and half minutes. I can understand Bale’s frustration, but come on, that was overkill and ridiculous. Someone should have stepped in and put a stop to that egomaniac’s rant.
Eh, what’s the big deal? Bale is an actor…by definition vain, egocentric, and narcissistic. He’s not Batman…he’s a little Welshman who does make-believe in front of cameras for millions of dollars.
Remember (ultimate prima donna) Kinski blowing up at Walther Saxer on Fitzcarraldo? Remember what Herzog did? Nothing. He let Kinski spew his venom, and then it was done. Filming continued. Kinski was valuable enough for his behavior to be tolerated.
Bale is no Kinski (and McG is, uh, no Herzog), but bad behavior by stars–unafraid of being fired–goes with the territory on set. In that sense, you could say that “unprofessionalism” is professional…at least in Hollywood.
Actors are sooooo important…
I don’t care if he was doing a scene. You just DON’T treat another person that way. All of our classy actors are gone now – Bale has NO CLASS at all. I am saving a whole lot of money by not supporting the work of immature and stupid “celebrities” – he’s just the most current on my list of those to not watch.
Geez. You’re a bunch of women. It’s nothing more than an average display of a Scotch-Irish temper. Seriously, if this has your panties in a wad, don’t ever make one of us REALLY angry. That was nothing.
Man…
Last time i will watch a movie with that ASS$OLE Christian in it.
It’s one thing to have a short temper boost but to go off and off and off on this poor guy. He should have said, “yeah come get me…then clocked his AS#”.
UNBELIEVABLE
Nice that sound kept rolling…
We should now have a look at the film to see the flip side of the coin. How’d that take look during dailies the next day?? The DP must have turned bright red during them. A DP should know enough to sit still till the director calls a cut. Actors should not have to perform with unprofessional shit like this. Send the lighting crew in to get it right if there’s a problem with the lights, but do it at the appropriate time, not during a take! Sure Christian snapped. Who wouldn’t? He’s human. Besides being human, he’s a damn good actor. When doing a scene that demands everything from an actor, one does not stroll through the scene like Alfred Hitchcock doing his cameo! I worked with Christian Bale on The Prestige, and he was great. Very low key, respectful, and completely professional.
stay classy mr. bale.
douche.bag.
WHAT A DICK..
THE GUY SHOULD HAVE CLOCKED CHRISTIAN IF HE HAD IT IN HIM.
I WILL NEVER WATCH ANOTHER MOVIE OF HIS.
SPOILED HOLLYWOOD ASS$OLE
Very mature and professional. I’m sure Bale is perfect and has never erred on the set. What a man to show concern for his fellow man with a little constructive criticism. God what I would pay to work with such people! And I’ve always thought these people we’re arrogant self centered children pretending to be grown ups! Wow how wrong we can be!
If he didn’t apologize to that guy, then Batman is officially a douschebag (<—spelling?) I can understand blowing up on somone, but for that damn long? He needs to get over himself. He ain’t so damn important that he can treat other people like his lowly little subjects, that arrogant prick. The DP and director need to grow a pair.
There is no excuse for abusive behavior, privately or publicly. Serves Bake right if everyone hears this. He has no right to yell at someone like that, he could have asked the director to deal with it or someone else, or said a few words but this just shows his uncontrollable rage. There is no excuse for (verbal) abuse. Unless lives are being saved or some more important drastic situation, this behavior is uncalled for.
Christian Bale is a prick and he should never work in Hollywood again. What a immature and spoiled prick. I would have ripped his empty head from his scrawny neck.
So he flipped right the fuck out and went on about it for way too long, who the fuck hasn’t. What the hell is wrong with you people who treat this like no one has ever spoken these words together in a sentence before? Seriously, explain how this could not have been anybody else really pissed off at somebody else who trashed something they are passionate about? It would be like somebody walking on to one of my shoots and sitting on the model’s lap.
DP should stand still. 200 million dollar movie, and Bale gets the blame if it goes down. Not McG and def not the DP. Sure , it sounds excessive, but you don’t know what the scene was. Could of been emotional, could of been preparing for it all day.
I’ve been in that situation before, trying to do a scene with somebody not paying attention, walking around. There are few things for an actor that are more annoying
why don’t you give some love to tmz since they posted it first? youd be pissed if they posted something you did without credit…
Stay Classy Christian Bale!
And BALE is complaining about someone ELSE being UNPROFESSIONAL?
Sounds like Bale is just another whiny, overpaid Hollywood prima-donna. IMO, he needs a good ass-kicking himself.
This is the perfect example of Hollywood arrogance. Who does this guy think he is? NO ONE has the right to treat another human being so abominably… I don’t care how long he “agonized” over the scene for his mega million $ check. The Hollywood stars these days think they are above the world … they amost decidedly are not. Reality check due here.
This guy is a complete asshole the only one acting uprofesional was him . perhaps he can date lindsay lohan and they can share tantrums. I wouldent pay 2 cents to see this dick ia movie.
There is no excuse whatsoever for that kinda of language and abuse. Completely unprofessional.
I will never go see a Christian Bale movie again. I always suspected he was a bit of extreme-arrogant-type like Russell Crowe. Now I know.
I laughed when I heard this. Was it inappropriate? Yes, but if you’re really in the business you’ve heard this kind of stuff a lot. Not just from actors and actresses, but directors and producers as well. There are executives that scream at their assistants like this everyday. I was once on the phone with the assistant of an agent at CAA while he screamed ala Christian Bale at the assistant. I felt so bad for the guy, that I apologized for calling at a bad time. The assistant said, “No problem. It’s like this all the time.”
Everyone is jealous because they can’t yell at their idiot co-workers like Christian Bale can. How many times have you wanted to do this exact same thing in your office? Well too bad you’re not Christian Bale. Too bad you’re not that cool. Keep on crying about ‘how people shouldn’t treat other people like that’, as if you really believe it. Oh and if only you could…
I think they should bring in David O. Russell to direct Christian’s next film. Sounds like a match made in hell!
Unprofessional on Bale’s part for lashing out like this when he knows the DP cannot quit the job right then and there because of verbal abuse. Actors (also TV anchors by the way) are known for lashing out and crew cannot walk out on them. For any crew walk off a shoot for any reason other than severe sudden illness isn’t tolerated in the film or TV business (I’ve worked in both) especially over verbal abuse. You have to let it blow over.
Sounds like Bale was technically right, but shows absolutely no class and no self-control. What is an actor if not a master of self-control? That’s what separates a great actor from mediocre. The mediocre ones lash out like that and the great ones control their emotions, discuss it with the director between takes and let the director or A.D. handle it. For an actor to have it out directly with crew is no class on the part of the actor.
Any person defending Bale is a total idiot. No one has any right, except for life and death situations, has the right to treat another person in such a demeaning way. PERIOD.
it’s obvious he has a major attitude and anger problem… it already was evident in his relationship with his family, as well. people like this need to be called out, fined, or left isolated to learn from their mistakes.. .bunch of megalomaniac divas.
People need to grow the F up, especially “intertubes”, this tape is nothing.
How do you know this guy did not do the same thing several other times beforehand (it sure sounds like it from the tape), and finally after being asked nicely 5 times, Mr. Bale went off on him.
You ever tell someone to do something over and over and they don’t get it until you yell at them or tell them the next time they do it they are fired? Sometimes people just don’t listen unless you make them. If you don’t know that, you have never had any real responsibility in a business in your life.
I bet this guy didn’t walk through the scene again the rest of the week.
I don’t care who you are, IT IS NEVER OK TO ACT LIKE THAT. Bale knows that he in a position of power and abuses it like a world class jerk. I know BALE punk wouldn’t do that down at our lumber mill or he would get his pretty ass handed to him. What next, slap women? What a chicken shit looser. No more Bale Punk films for me.
Everybody seems to be working under the assumption the camera was rolling; from the chat it just sounds like they were working a rehearsal and the DP was getting his lights while they were running it. Just because the recorder is going doesn’t mean they called roll on sound. Digital production recorders essentially record the entire day on a loop and the recordist can select any moment to commit to the hard drive, even spans of time in the past. I’m a production recordist and we always record this stuff; we aren’t the ones that leak it- talk to the assistant editors in the picture department, the guys at the telecine house, and publicity guys about that one
I guess all the posters here are actors and above-the-line types, and this stuff is just par for the course. An observation: If the DP walked off the set after this ridiculousness the whole crew would have gone with him. If Christian Bale doesn’t like the guy in his eyeline, he should ever-so-politely ask him to step away, and if he persists, he should ever so politely tell McG that he’s leaving the set until the DP gets his act together. This is just some actor asserting his bankability and artistic superiority over the DP of “Mr. 3000.”
IMHO. I get that we didn’t hear the hour leading up to it but anything short of Shane murdering Bale’s kids doesn’t justify the utter ridiculousness of this.
Dude is the DP. He’s not some random schmuck PA — he’s the 4th most important person in the entire goddamn shoot.
You don’t yell at above the line people like that. Especially not one with the power to make or break your performance. That’s not only unprofessional but extremely stupid.
Still, DP was wrong for walking into Bale’s LOS. Doesn’t give him a right to flip shit, though.
And McG was probably staring at a monitor, which is why he didn’t see shit.
I am deeply disturbed with this unacceptable behavior upon another human being. Shame on you Christian … you make your name undeserving.
Sean
The DP ruined my shot and I totally lost my motivation. What was my motivation again? I’m trying to save the future from a bunch of marauding robots that are trying to destroy the world?
Well, here’s the thing: if Bale is ready to “go again” literally seconds after his hissy fit, and he doesn’t need to “take a minute,” then why can’t he just concentrate and do the scene in the first place even though his DP might be in his sight line.
If he concentrate enough seconds after shrieking, why can’t he concentrate before shrieking? Now that’s truly “amateur” behavior, in my opinion.
Professional behavior in most office environments is not the same as professional behavior on set. In many respects, of course, it is. But this is art as well as commerce… and there are regularly (and happily) interactions that are quite different in tone than those around a fax machine at a banking institution. This is why people enjoy being in artistic environments. When people are used to being easy-going in a “profane” or “inappropriate” way, a side-effect is that they carry those patterns into their hostility. I don’t mean to excuse this tirade, merely to provide some context for those who have never worked in the arts (commercial or otherwise).
I’m delighted that he told off the S.O.B’s. Sounds like someone pushed their way in to where they shouldn’t have been. The poor guy has had enough with nutcases lately. Lay off him.
Man that was intense> but if you people are surprised then you have very little knowledge about how thing behave on movie sets. Im not excusing Bale.
compared to regular work enviroments they would seem down right abusive. I have seen and heard of many such incidents, lots of money, stress and livlihoods on the line everyday.
Long work days coupled with having to get set number of shots per day and making things work make people working on film shoots lose it every so often. Its par for the course!
Listening to Bale’s rant makes me incredibly sad. Nobody should talk to another human being like that, even in private. It is degrading and insulting and rude beyond belief. The fact that there were loads of people around to witness it adds insult to injury.
Bale should be ashamed of himself and issue a serious mea culpa to the DP and to the world. I mean, If Michael Phelps has to apologize for acting like a 23 year old, certainly Bale should be held accountable for his behavior. And I certainly don’t care how unprofessional the DP was, or what mistakes he made.
This is what’s wrong with Hollywood. We put up with shit like that. I wish McG had a better handle on the situation, because during that rant it became clear who was running things on that set.
Listening to that makes me glad Dark Knight was snubbed at the Oscars. It also makes me believe that Bales’ sister and mother were speaking the truth.
I’ve worked on a few films when the star gets to act like a child and have hissy fits and nobody does anything. Sickening.
The only justice is when tapes and videos of the incidents are made public. Because I can assure you that if Christian Bale knew the world would see this rant, the rant would not have happened.
Funny–this kind of reminds me of Mel Gibson in Malibu.
Nothing like true colors.
OMG! Anyone who has heard of a band call “Life S*x and Death” you know this rant sounds like the beginning of their song, “Some f*c*in’sh*t a**!” I love that song, but this rant should’ve been the beginning!
what a punk that Bale is, eh? Im not an attorney but threatening to kick somones ass is a major work place violation in the USA. That DP has one huge case in his favor. $$$$$$$
Give me a break I’ve gotten ripped that bad or worse from a boss the only difference in the corporate world is they don’t cuss.
If you listen he says you keep doing this, it sounded to me like the dude did it several times and didn’t stop the behavior. I guess all the people upset are from the USA, most Americans can’t handle this type of harsh criticism anymore, because most of you grew vag’s where your balls used to be. Me personally, I’d have just floored the dude.
publicity stunt, no doubt.
Folks, this is what happens when you appear in a huge film like “The Dark Knight”. Evidently Bale thinks he has arrived. SO DID RUSSELL CROWE UNTIL HE THREW THAT TELEPHONE ONTO THE HOTEL CLERK.
Bale is reasonably pissed here. I’m on his side.
I think Bale knew that he was going off and he just couldn’t stop himself. He actually stops to tell the guy that he’s a nice guy at one point. Nobody should be talked to that way, yes, but we don’t know the context and what set this off. For all we know, he was told numerous times NOT to get in the actor’s sight line.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Bale apologized almost immediately when he calmed down. People who lose their temper like that almost immediately apologize to the person they are venting on.
AMERICAN PSYCHO!!!!!
Bale is by far one of the top actors of his generation. Nicholson and ESPECIALLY Deniro have blown up wayyy beyond this.
Get over it to be a great actor, you are to a degree ‘disturbed’. If they were not, you wouldnt get a particular carved out personality that they deliver.
By the way, American Psycho is one of the most underrated films of this decade. It is Bale’s Taxi Driver and he was a laugh riot as well as a psycho.
At least he makes good films. He should get an oscar for his rage alone.
Hollywood has lost its balls, and its funny that foreign (non-american) actors male and female are kicking the shit out of american actors like dicaprio, affleck, etc.
Pete NYC
The man does not have much of a vocabulary.
Very, very professional. If I behaved that way at work, I wouldn’t have a job after.
Fire the PR guy. Not one time was the title of the flik mentioned or CB’s full (Cristian Who?) and any of the participants’ full names mentioned by any of those who chose to post a comment here. No press credit? …. No cigar.
PTB: “I don’t care what they say about me or what they call me just as long as they spell my name right.” Oh yeah! LOL
Maybe the DP should have settled it the way most men do who work with their hands…ya know (sorry c. kennedy)just bash him a good one in the chops. If CB makes an effort to get up, give ‘em a couple a kicks…then its good night Irene. The DP can always find another job and CB would think twice the next time. The DP might have to do some jail time, but he would have his self-respect.
But what do I know?
Bale maight have been a bit overboard but I don’t blame him for being very angry. Nobody should be causing even the slightest distraction during shooting. Acting is an art. I imagine that if you’ve gotten into that zone where you are the character — that fleeting moment of insiration — and someone blows it by carelessly putzing around, you’d be effinf furious too. IMO, it wasn’t Bale who was unprofessional.
Lol, I can see the script now: BATMAN BERATES
anyone thinking this is just spoiled celeb berating a “poor ‘lil old DP” then you obviously haven’t worked on sets before. Christian Bale is a SERIOUS actor who commits everything he has to each scene. If someone is wandering around behind the camera and is distracting the actor from giving 100% to his scene then that person is in the wrong 100%. If you listen closely, Bale says he “keeps doing it” so this was obviously the last straw for him.
Re-takes cost time, therefore costs money. This could have been a very complicated scene which requires a lot of resetting between takes and if somebody is ruining the shot by being a distraction they should be removed from the set. This is why most sets on blockbuster movies are closed.
Actors don’t like doing retakes if the cause is some douchebag wandering around the set. When an actor is doing a scene that involves looking in the direction of the camera EVERYTHING behind the camera must be perfectly still. That is Bale’s point. He does go a little overboard but to me it sounds like the DP isn’t taking responsibility for his actions and blowing Bale’s comments off. This obviously infuriates him more.
Give Bale some slack here – we don’t know the circumstances leading up to this in full and if you work in Hollywood you have to take this kind of language and temperment. I have seen directors go off on set dressers for smaller infractions than this. Hollywood and a “thick skin” go hand in hand.
From the sound of it, the DP certainly had made a mistake more than once. In that regard, I can understand some anger over a scene being ruined.
But, how many times do you hear someone go off like that, yet still use the person’s first name? It wasn’t “this f****** DP”, or “that guy”, it was “Bruce you are a nice guy, but…” . Given this, there may be some truth to the thought of “it was a no worse than what a boss might do…minus the cussing”.
YET, with all of that being said…did anyone else hear the spot in the audio where it sounded like Bale was being physically restrained from going after the guy? At one point when he is talking about kicking the guy’s a**, there is a muffled movement noise on the microphone…as if Bale were physically trying to get close to the guy to actually attack him.
I don’t know…context is important…maybe the DP is a world class screw up…..but it still seems like Bale was taking advantage of the fact that as a multi-million dollar actor he is never gonna get rebuked for how he treats a DP. Can you imagine if he snapped like this on another big name actor due to that actor “ruining the scene”.
Oh well, the flip side of the coin is that for all the talk of “childish actor” syndrome, it is also fair to point out that most of us don’t have recording equipment around us when we snap emotionally. That isn’t an excuse for the way Bale was acting (any more than any common person could be excused for acting in such a way), but at the end of the day it still wasn’t meant to be a public conversation (though yet again, Bale is smart enough to know he was being recorded).
I hope the two guys manage to put it behind them.
What a prick. If his acting ability is so limited that he can’t act with people in his line of sight then he needs to find another career. Real actors work around the small distractions. The ability to do that separates the REAL actors from the sissy prim a donas. I just hope he doesn’t ever work with animals on the set. I could just see him going off on a puppy or a kitten for missing it’s mark. I never heard of Jimmy Stewart or Katharine Hepburn going off like this because of some small distraction. Deport the limey.
Wait a second. I’m on Bale’s side.
FIRST, he’s the only one miced up, so naturally he sounds like he’s going ballistic and everyone else is whispering to appease him.
SECOND, if the guy kept trotting into his eye line, come ON! That is excruciating for any actor. Particularly one with the pressure of the whole production on his shoulders. Also, how many times was this guy asked to stop moving about?
THIRD, what was the emotional content of the scene? Was he going ape shit in the scene? If so, it is okay for him to keep the crazy going between takes so he can work toward a result on film. If he was supposed to be volatile in the scene, what director would want him to leave ape-shit mode to talk calm with this guy who kept walking through his eye line and then have to take twenty minutes (at 3 am) to work it back up. Come ON.
FOURTH, what time was it?
CONCLUSION: this is not comparable to Bill O’Reilly’s “let’s do it LIVE!!” Bale had cause to be pissed. Stop hating on him.
The grammar is wrong and I’m not even a Cameron fan, but Anonymous soundman made me laugh tonight.
Acting! Take that, Baudelaire!
This came off as a very sick person. He’s got issues. It doesn’t matter how many times the guy fucked him up. Bale should have gone to the director and said, this has to stop. That’s it. The berating of this man was so offensive that I felt so sad for Mr. Bale. He’s truly ill. There is something in his head that is not firing off correctly. Anger like that is very disturbing. I had chill’s going up my spine listening to his rant. I have have experienced anger like that. I won’t explain what led to it, but I can surely tell you it wasn’t cause someone was messing up my scene several times. It was an unusual event. I think ALL of us have suffered such anger. But they are extraordinary reasons. Not cause a co-worker has decided he or she is going to ruin your whole fucking day. GET help man! Your really pissed.
I would have let him hit me, then sue him, then released the tape, and then take my money and go on a long vacation courtesy of a has-been dickhead.
Wow. I wish I could better hear what the DPs responses were, to know if there was a reason why Bale’s tirade went on so long.
Nobody deserves to be spoken to that way. Ever. Speak to me that way and you’ll be in the hospital.
If the DP was truly that amateurish, then it’s time to fire the guy and offer your SINCERE regrets that it didn’t work out. But you NEVER talk to another human being the way Bale did. Its a moral abomination to tear someone down like that.
Hilarious.
The DP is an award winning artist.
Christian Bale is an acclaimed actor.
They’re both professionals, and they both know what they’re doing.
The DP should have stayed out of the shot, and Bale should have just let it slide.
Bale is in the wrong here, and there is no excuse for how he treated the cinematographer, regardless of what he did.
Folks, everyone knows Bale is an actor who immerses himself deeply into a role… he doesn’t turn it on and off, he ‘becomes’ the character… so this wasn’t him flying off the handle lightly…. the DP had to have been really screwing up…
Bale wasn’t being a primadonna, he was just royally pissed that the scene was being ruined, repeatedly…
Cut the guy some slack….
Tho, McG should have stepped up and put the situation down.
what a badass
How funny! Bale – LOL…Testing his boundries. Yep. The DP? Really would a DP with experience do that? Nope. Can’t stay in character? You’re fired. Send the audio track to the insurance bonder? Close it down.
Fuck TMZ!
Enough said.
DOUCHE
I’m moderately surprised by the above comments of the movie industry “insiders” whose comments can be summed up like this: “It was not the actor’s fault because some tech guy twice walked on the scene.” This speaks volumes about the industry, where never-ending cussing an ranting is apparently routine if anything should interrupt an actor’s concentration. Please spare me the idiotic comments that “professional behavior on the set is different” or “this is taken out of context since we don’t know what happened first or how many takes he had to do.” Idiots. Takes never last longer than a few minutes and Bale himself says this was only the second interruption. So, what are we talking about, a half hour (tops) of his precious concentration being interrupted? What an inflated sense of self-importance. This is what he needs: a moment of his idiocy in the limelight to in order to make some serious changes but I’m not holding my breath.
…everyone here who keeps defending Mr. Bale’s behavior based upon “industry norms” or because their daddy did worse things to them are really sad people…..not only is Mr. Bale’s behavior intolerent of mistakes, which everyone will make from time to time, but he feels it is acceptable to demean others in order to inflate his own ego….abuse, both at work and in the home is never acceptable from a human perspective…and more to the point, it really is not efficient or profitable in the long run….
I’ve never left a comment here before, but I’m disgusted at the people defending this piece of shit Christian Bale. Do women that dress provocatively *deserve* to get groped in public? Would you all be defending Christian Bale if he had groped a woman in public by saying that it was her fault for dressing like that? If CB had a wife that dropped his sandwich and he berated her like this, would you be slamming his wife for dropping his sandwich?
Megastar actors and actresses are scum. All of them. ALL of them.
Actors have the easiest jobs in Hollywood and are not gods. I now really dislike Christian Bale AND his dumb fans.
“Man that was intense> but if you people are surprised then you have very little knowledge about how thing behave on movie sets. Im not excusing Bale.
compared to regular work enviroments they would seem down right abusive. I have seen and heard of many such incidents, lots of money, stress and livlihoods on the line everyday.”
Comments like this are fascinating to read!
Now try working in a job where you are responsible for millions of dollars of revenue per month, while earning minimum wages along the way. Then have your boss scream at you unprofessionally (which is different from your boss’s professional screaming)
If you (or Christian Bale) screw-up making a movie then your Producer loses money on their investment.
If ordinary people screw up in their jobs, then factories are closed and thousands of real people lose their jobs.
Please don’t ever compare making a Hollywood movie to the real world.
Christian Bale is a terrific actor and this shows how petty Hollywood is. Someone inside Warner Brothers leaked this tape to embarrass him….well, if I was Bale, I’d walk on Batman 3 and any future Terminator movies until the leaker was revealed and fired.
Frankly, the leaker is trying to hurt Bale, but it is also hurting Warner Brothers’ franchise movies by damaging the star of those films.
I gave him the benefit of the doubt when they said he beat up his mom. Not anymore. These clowns are so full of themselves it’s pathetic.
I want to see Bale put THAT kind of emotion into his movies. Amazing.
Christian. Good to hear he has balls. He can call it like he sees it, that is called leadership. I did not hear any out of control comments. Yea – sure, Christian may regret the f-bombs, ok. But, the mealy mouthed director or producer, who claimed he ‘did not see it’, what ever it was, he is the guy who let his set get out-of-control. The director should have removed the DP, for the sake of restoring order. Who ever leaked this audio should be fired, immediately.
No matter what the circumstances. He may be big enough to get you fired but he’s not big enough to talk to you that way. Everyone is entitled to their dignity. His comments were way over the top. I don’t care how long he’s worked that day.. blah, blah, blah. Personally, I wouldn’t have stood for it. I pity him.
NO NO NO THOSE WERE HIS LINES !
If you think Christian Bale’s behavior was perfectly acceptable and the DP’s behavior was absolutely unacceptable, then there’s a good chance you’re an asshole.
I realize I’m not someone whose job it is to pretend to do jobs, so maybe I don’t get it.
Loosing ones temper happens. It feels like he was fueled by something other than the incident. People on this board must never have lost their temper before. Lot of judgments and outrage, which is understandable considering the intensity of anger here. When I heard this I cringed because it really brings up the privacy/fame issue. We and he live in such an upside down world and loosing one’s temper is far from an insane reaction. You think Bale was having fun? Well he was certainly venting something. Who on earth knows what was going down with him at the time not to mention what he’s going through personally in his life. Have compassion folks, cast all the judgement aside. Look under the surface of it. Who knows his anger could have been an important and powerfully positive thing in ways we don’t even know yet.
This should be nominated for a spoken word grammy.
Hey, kid!
If I was still alive, I’d buy you a *&#*#& beer! *&#&*#&@ ‘em if they can’t take a joke.
Now, get off my bus before I throw you off.
This clip will be GREAT when Richard and Sal use it in a prank call on Stern! Bababooey!
With that many F-bombs per sentence, I thought I was listening to a new script for “The Big Lebowski, Part II”. Right or wrong Chris needs to work on developing his vocabulary.
Anyone ever work in a high stress environment? I’m gonna give Bale the benefit of the doubt here. Shit happens at work. After eight 18-hour days things happen that would never be tolerated under ideal conditions. It blows over. Nobody holds grudges. I’m sure similar things happen on movie sets, what with all the time constraints. Without the full context nobody has the right to judge.
I don’t care if the DP was in the wrong or not. There was a better way to handle the situation and not in front of the entire crew. NO ONE has the right to speak to another professional in this manner. The only amateur was Bale. I’m tired of “star” tantrums and unprofessionalism. I dealt with it personally on a movie I worked on this summer. Appreciate your life. There are MANY talented and professional actors out there who are struggling and willing to take your place at a moment’s notice.
“You don’t know what it’s like to work with actors”. Hilarious Bale, well if you classify yourself as an actor, my guess is it’s like working with an overgrown spoiled child. Wah, I can’t pretend because I saw him walking in the background, wah.
Actually, it’s the first time I’ve ever found him at all compelling.
I hate all people like this… I hope this ends Bale’s career, but I doubt it will. Hopefully they will at least get a different person for batman.
Bale handled it poorly regardless of how egregious the DP’s careless might have been.
Pull the DP aside and talk to him. Why yell at him in front of the cast and crew?
There’s an imbalance of power here. If Bale threatens to walk, it shuts down the whole movie. He holds all the cards in that situation. Regardless of how important the DP is to the film, Bale can cause the real ripples. He’s abusing that power. He’s clearly an abusive person. It’s no different than beating up his mom or sister. It’s an issue of power and control.
Um Josh, I’m guessing the DP was also working the same eight eighteen hour days as Bale, but of course as you said, “Without the full context nobody has the right to judge.” but then why do you say “I’m gonna give Bale the benefit of the doubt here.” ? I hope Bale farts so you can breathe with your head up there.
Well he’s not much at improvising is he, poor dialog, horribly delivered. Swing and a miss Christian.
Is it just me or am I the only one not surprised by Mr. Bale? C’mon folks, this is Hollywood. Have you ever met a normal, centered, humane actor? They are all overpaid hypocrites in the truest sense of the word. They say and do the opposite of what they portray on the screen. I feel for Mr. Bale, obviously he has some serious issues in need of clinical help. No matter the circumstances before, during, or after this inicident and not withstanding that we’ve all lost our cool at one point or another . . . Mr. Bale is in the limelight . . . his “star” quality has just gone down a ‘mil or two per movie now. I’m sure his agent is thrilled about that!
yes he was terribly unpleasant and probably traumatized everybody it sounds however like CB was in the right here
The correct spelling is (two words) “douche bag.”
As in:
“Christian Bale is a douche bag.” or
“Say, isn’t that Christian Bale, the douche bag?” or
“My Christian Bale is all worn out. I have to go to the drug store to get a new one.”
“douche bag”
I don’t even know who this “actor” is. And he’s supposed to be so important that he can talk to people that way?! They could get ANYBODY to be in these stupid movies. These people walk and talk, for Christ’s sake. Anybody can do that. I could do this guy’s job. Actors are big-mouthed, talentless pussies. That’s why I stopped watching movies. They all suck, and the actors are just punks.
Wait a minute — time out everyone: he did that shit on a TERMINATOR movie? Er… not exactly Tennessee Williams if ya know what I mean.
Like Bale’s doing “The Work” on a blue-screen pic..?
I used to be a limo driver, and I’ve had to deal with a couple of personalities like this one. Stars do lose their tempers frequently (by definition, they are the ones on set who are allowed to), and it is generally tolerated as long as the movie gets made and is successful. There is always a limit, though, and they know this–and it’s my guess that after the smoke had cleared, Bale probably approached the DP and apologized. The DP and AD were doing what they could to calm Bale down, and, eventually, it more or less worked. Often actors can become so emotionally wrapped up in a scene that they can become the super-hero or super-villian they are trying to portray. Also, they are under constant pressure from the public and everybody they meet in real life to seem to be the same as the characters they portray. During the filming of Serpico, Al Pacino supposedly flashed his fake badge to somebody in traffic whose driving he did not approve of. I don’t know how intense the scene was, but I think it’s possible that Bale had made such an emotional investment in the particular scene that that emotion carried over into his rant at the DP. In other words, he might have still been pretending to be the character in the scene, without even realizing it. I have had some experience as an actor, and I can say that this old saying is certainly true: “The good actor fools the audience; the great actor fools himself.”
On balance, I’d say the release of this tape is a good thing, especially for Bale. It will serve him as a little reality check, much the same as the one Alec Baldwin got a year ago when leaving his daughter a rude phone message. I admire the equanimity and even-handedness of the crew in handling this situation. I also admire Bale’s work. I think he is a brilliant actor and intensely dedicated to his craft. It’s a shame that something like this had to happen, but hopefully he will seize upon this opportunity to right himself.
What an ass-wipe. Behavior like this doesn’t belong anywhere…and I just lost my appetite to see Christian Bale in anything for the rest of my life. The DP in question (or at least someone with balls on the set) should’ve thrown down with him. A-holes like that need to be checked down when they start pulling crap like this. Why do all of the good guys like Heath Ledger, River Phoenix, John Belushi, Chris Farley, et al go too soon but people like Christian Bale stick around?
Outstanding method acting performance by the petulent Bale who is obviously strugging with internal demons following the Madoff affair.
I can’t stand ANY actors, but who really cares about this? So he blew his lid. I agree with those who have said if you work in a high pressure environment, crap happens. I was married to a physically abusive person. Uh, this ain’t it, folks. Verbal abuse? One event? Nooooo. And man to man? Puleeze. Grow up, life is hard. I guess if you are a kindergarten teacher or an accountant, you don’t hear this. I have worked high pressure jobs, and I am a woman, and heard this many times. If he was able to calm down and call the guy by name, and say he was a nice guy, then the idiot should have not kept talking. When someone is angry, don’t keep making excuses. That said, it’s obvious he is tempramental. I guess if you can’t stand the heat…………
To all you actor wannabes who can “relate” to Christian Bale, and defend his rant by asking “haven’t you ever lost your temper before” or says “he’s only human.” Let me ask you this: Have you never made a mistake before? What about the DP, isn’t he only human? If you think Bale’s rant is acceptable behavior, then your moral compass broke a long time ago. And, I highly doubt you’d be defending Bale’s rant if you were on the receiving end.
What do you expect? These people are paid incredible sums of money to do what? Act? Anyone can act. If a child can master your profession (see Shirley Temple, Tatum Oneal, Jodie Foster, etc), then how difficult is it what you do? Yet, unlike people who actually make a contribution to society like teachers, nurses, military, etc actors who are basically the people we all knew in high school who were the most self absorded narcisists are treated by many in this country as gods. So is it any wonder they behave like this? At least he isn’t confusing his HS/NYU Acting School education with a real education and preaching to me about global warming or whatever is the latest cool political position that the hollywood know-nothings are pushing. This behavior is at the very least work-place violence and at its worst assault!
South Park is going to have a field day with this. I can’t wait.
I think it’s irresponsible for this tape to be released. Shame on you. No one knows the context of this.
To me, this sounds like a completely frustrated actor who is tired, trying to give his all, and yet has to put up with some jerk(s) who keep on distracting him with no help from a director or producer to support him — he’s fending for himself guys.
Also, the fact that he says fuck so many times means nothing in the acting world. Fuck is thrown around like nothing most of the time in this industry. So that is part of the context. If you don’t get this, then you’re not working in the industry and shouldn’t comment on this blog.
Additionally, I understand his frustration of distracting staff on set. I was on a set one time doing live TV. There was this “fucking” food stylist no less than 8 feet away from me the entire shoot who I swear was ADD and couldn’t stop moving around. Even though I do live TV gigs all the time this lady drove me nuts. She had no concept of how “fucking” distracting this was. I told the producers about it midstream — they understood the situation but did nothing. I had to tell her myself, but she again continued. UGHHHH! “Fuck!!” After the shoot I let my opinions be known and never wanted her hired again. I was under too much pressure to be perfect with my performance to be thrown off by such an unprofessional and totally ignorant amateur. It’s not like there aren’t other food stylists who get it. Had this shoot been in the nighttime under the pressure to portray a character with emotional intensity — I think I would have been of the mindset to blow a fuse too.
So lay off!!!
ATTENTION!!! Everyone should boycott the DVD unless footage from the incident is included in the extras.
I read most of the posts and I address this particularly to the ones who attempted to justify Mr. Bale’s actions… If one of my kids would act like that for ANY REASON during a rehearsal I would be asking them to leave and then I would gladly recast immediately because nobody has the right to act like that for ANY reason on ANY set – PERIOD. Perhaps Mr. Bale should go back to high school drama classes and relearn professionalism. Tell you what, bring him to my acting classroom because my kids WILL show him what professionalism is!
Just wondering—So how many millions are they rewarding him with for such arrogant, foul-mouthed and just plain unsafe behavior?
I think a bit of all of the above is true. No one deserves to be talked to that way, especially in front of their peers & co-workers. It’s unprofessional. But then again, we don’t know the story. I’ve been on set, and let me tell you, any crew guy, actor or whomever will tell you if you’ve been there 5 or 6 days straight for 18 hours & you’re exhausted & a scene, especially a tough one, gets blown because of something like this, no one reacts kindly. Also totally unprofessional. Bottom line, don’t draw judgements from TMZ.
He does say Bryce, it’s Bryce Dallas Howard who plays his wife I think. He was probably in the middle of an emotionally intense scene and already keyed up, and he is known for staying in character.
Christian is on the right side of this argument, and this isn’t such a bad temper tantrum. I’ve had to deal with less screaming but more emotionally abusive behavior in the corporate workplace, let alone on a set. Just because he swears doesn’t make this so bad.
The people who act like they’ve never heard anybody yelled at or say no human being should ever be talked to like this – yeah right! I’d like to live in your imaginary fluffy bunny world. I’ve been yelled at worse by every body in my family, and I bet you have too.
Christian gets it out and gets on with the job and 3 1/2 minutes is a blink of an eye. That DP should stop walking, and as a note to all the grips who think shuffling around “quietly” is ok, because you are doing it “quietly” – it’s not ok. Lock down the set means lock down the f-ing set. It’s what is captured on camera that counts, and if you aren’t going to respect that a camera is rolling why are you even on the set? Did you just turn up to eat craft services and pretend to adjust a c-stand for 45 minutes? And turn of your f-ing phones! See, just thinking about the last thing I worked on when someone’s phone went off 3 times makes me want to drop f-bombs.
Brilliant PR stunt. They couldn’t buy this sort of pub for T4 if they had Titanic’s budget.
You guys need to lighten up. Apparently none of you ever served in the military. Its the norm to get your butt chewed like that for screwing up. If the guy cant take it then he should quit and do something else. No one is making the guy work there.
I agree with the folks who claim this isn’t our business and we don’t know the context. I’ve worked production myself and it is incredibly demanding, both mentally and physically. By all accounts, Christian is a professional. And he’s an intense actor — those kinds of performances require a level of concentration that can make anyone crack. All I’m saying is don’t judge the guy too harshly here. He probably worked an 18 hour day on four hours of sleep. Under those circumstances, I think many of us would blow up if someone was unduly interferring with our work.
This is almost like a set up. Guy walks in the line of sight twice and Bale goes off. Then it is almost like the guy keeps flipping Bale off to upset him even more. Bale finally says do the shoot fairly calmly and someone sets him off again over and over.
After hearing that, I wouldn’t pay a dime to see a movie with Christian Bale in it. I wouldn’t talk to a dog that way.
This comment is somewhere in the #155 range, so if anyone gets to this point, congrats — that’s a whole of of dedication to this prick. If you are a therapist for hire, perhaps gaining background/understanding for your approach to pitch Bale for work, I salute you, and I hope you fall into the same burning pit as all the rightfully sunken lawyers of my day. The whole accent thing really stunk of inward doubt, betrayal, hatred or stupidity. I can’t tell, but maybe some of the paid professionals will have a say. I have worked on sets for television, Hell’s Kitchen to be exact. And I worked my ass off and things are moving very fast, and time doesn’t stop when that much money is flowing. And when the time comes when some dope cuts productivity, and perhaps creativity where creativity is king (if not paramount) there is loud, confrontational interjection. That is what makes it a highly demanding gig, that is why it’s highly paid, that is what makes this a non-story. It happens every production that involves a lot of $$ and that is the bottom line. Got that doc? Manic-chasing fools. If this does become an issue of revenge, I would expect legal interjection. I wouldn’t be surprised if Bale does leave and gets paid anyway.
Onwards…
Batman was great. I thought Bale was good for the role and, like any other actor worthy of my 10 bucks (I only go to matinees these days) – he is a complete nutsack. Crazy to the hilt, mark that down psychs…
The only chance he has is to quit the industry, because the industry is plagued by coke (and cock) induced rage inspired by the almighty buck. Damn, there I go again.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTihsJQHt48
I love the people saying they would “knock Bale out” or “wouldn’t tolerate that behavior.” They would have very short and unsuccessful careers in Hollywood.
I wonder, will this make it into the special features menu on the DVD release? C’mon, at least throw it in as an Easter Egg, which is activated when you can’t find it, get pissed off about it, and angrily slam your hand on the remote control’s buttons over and over.
You know, in corporate America, Bale would have been suspended and then fired after a review in HR. There are such as laws against harassment and a hostile workplace.
Why is H’wood exempt from laws that everyone else must obey?
Hell, this is just another day at work in the movies. Have any of you ever worked with Joe Pitka, Michael Bay, Michael Mann or his infamous first A.D. ? This is a love tap compared to some of the stuff that is commonplace on other sets. Why do people put up with this and not come to the aid of a fellow worker ? The lowest paid I.A. crew member on this film made at least fifty thousand dollars for 3-4 months work. Many other crew members made at least 2-5 times that amount. Can you figure out why people kept their mouth shut ?
He just a mannequin that works maybe 9 weeks a year, reads the lines he’s told, wears the costume someone else designed, and stands where the director points. Sounds like he’s confused about his importance, and thinks the guys who are working 8-14 hour shifts trying to make his crappy acting look good, deserve his rage for having a small pp.
Even Tom Cruise could beat this sissy to a pulp.
wow you people leaving comments are the biggest vaginas on the planet, I loved it, he said “if you do it again” he won’t come back on set, he even said “your a nice guy”, but its a multimillion dollar movie being made, not shane’s home movies, I was cracking up through the whole thing actually, Bale sounds like a stand up comic, I wish I could have been there when he was hanging out with his wife or friends the next day complaining about it, he even put background music “da da da na na” to how care free the DP must have walked on the scene, that kind of stupidity could be a sketch on mad tv or snl, if anything, Bale was doing McG’s job….
To those who are criticizing Bale, have you ever been on a movie set? Actors spend hours and hours and hours shooting the same scene. You just want to get it done and move on. And when you’re playing an intense scene to the camera, the last thing you need is some yahoo walking on the set and ruining everything. He definitely deserved his ass chewed out. The director and producers should have chewed his ass out as well. In fact, as an audience member, I’m going to chew his ass out if I ever see him. Let this be a lesson – if you do something stupid, there will be consequences.
Brad…
Sorry dude, I AM former United States Army E-6, MOS 29EX9, Special Forces trained. And this is the truth, the ONLY TIME I ever got my rear chewed like that for f**n up was from my Drill Sergents…as one poster said up above and I will reinterate, In the Army they have only SO MUCH TIME (8 weeks basic, 4 weeks jump school, X amount of weeks SF Training) to get something into you THAT WILL NOT ONLY SAVE YOUR LIFE, but the life of the soldier next to you AND the squad/platoon/company/battery/battallion/brigade… and so on. To basically act together as a Very Well Oiled Machine.
I regress,… So if someone’s life is NOT in any hurt harm or danger, NO ONE, NO PROFESSIONAL, should be ripped like that, in front of his peers. I wonder if he would have went left like that if I was the DP. HINT: I am 6′2″ 220lbs, Brotha.
He’d be headed back “across the pond” in a coffee can with his name stuck on with scotch tape! Some “one” on set should have royally handed him his privilaged ass.
Now, what does thes say about the moral for this point forward on set??? How does the crew feel? Being on set for the next X amount of days/weeks on this shoot with this stupid fool. And trust me, it will show on film.
Christian Bale = Ba$t@rd B!tch
There is a saying. You can tell just who a person really is by the way they treat people who they deem below them. For someone to rant on and on in the most derogatory way is the one who is being “unprofessional” and a fool. What a jerk! What a “dick”. Who does Christian think he is? A professional pretender (actor) so what? Does that give him the right to treat other people in this way? Domestic abuse? I would bet my paycheck on it!!!!
Sounds to me like a idiot on the set got the a$$ chewing he needed for ruining several shoots!
I agree 100% with CB. The money spent isn’t to waste time diverting attention during a scene. If you ever have worked on a project like this, you would understand. Emotions aside, professionalism is knowing when the set is LOCKED DOWN. I’m surprised that he didn’t go off sooner, it seems to have been a persistent problem.
Seems like the DP had a problem with how to act efficiently on a set. I don’t blame Mr. Bale for having an outburst like this, I would. Doesn’t seem to me that it is at all indicative of his character, just his work ethic and knowledge of the craft, which seem to be fruitful.
I agree with CB. HE is trying to work and this DUDE tries to get in the middle of his scene while he was trying to work. He was told not to do it – but you know sometimes people need to be screamed at to get the point across. Tell you what, that dumbass dude will NEVER walk in the middle of a scene in the middle of a multi-million movie. This guy is a professional and people need to treat this accordingly.
Give him a break/ Christian Bale delivered the finest, most perfect performance of any [child] actor, ever, in the Spielberg film, “Empire Of The Sun”.
In spite of subsequent films, even though many were not up to Spielberg stuff, Bale is, and has always been a 100% performer in every film in which he has appeared. Unfortunately, he has neither been offered, nor accepted the parts that we might have loved to see him play.
For instance, I thought that Christian Bale should have been the most obvious next Bond. James.
If Mr. Bale has broken laws, he should stand before the law. If he has stirred up personal or professional problems, let those in his family, little movie moguls and their PR people sort it out.
With or without Hollywood support, and whatever personal situations in which he finds himself, Mr. Bale is one of the best actors of the generation, and I have observed for some time that he has not come to fulfill his true ability and promise as an actor.
I do wish that more light could be shed on this, rather than attacking one of the truly great actors in our time.
Actually, it’s the first time I’ve ever found him at all compelling.
-Comment by mike e b
I thought he was somewhat compelling in American Psycho but couldn’t agree more… just fascinating to hear him in this light.
Those merging accents are amazing, he’s like several people in one body.
Character-bleed? Exhaustion? Bad manners? Who fukin cares!!
None of your business anyway you paternal, judging bundles of overreaction. I love how this thread is going like gangbusters. Tempers as badass as Bale’s but flaring all meek and silent and keyboard like.
Either way it’s a kick in the pants to listen to Christian’s real darkness, (or so it sounds) so is reading all this huffy reactivity, like we’ve all just experienced something so tragic or obscene, “I’M SO SHOCKED, I’LL NEVER WATCH HIM AGAIN!!” Ahhhhh!
I especially love all the assumptions about what was happening and how and where, HILARIOUS! Was it a rehearsal? A take? A pick up shot, minimal crew? Cast of thousands? His Fault, NO HIS. Your an idiot, YOUR AN ASSHOLE!!
How often can you hear an internationally famed, uber handsome, mega millionaire flying off like this. AAA grade entertainment, ESPECIALLY IN TODAYS REALITY SOAKED SWAMPS, and hardly the sort of thing that will harm his career, yeah right….
EXTRA EXTRA!! READ ALL ABOUT IT!! TRAGEDY STRIKES FILMLAND…. DARK AMERICAN TERMINATOR PHYSCO BAT BOY HAS 3 MINUTE MELT DOWN!!! TRAGEDY STRIKES!! TERMINATOR D.P. GETS INDIGESTION WHILE BALE BERATES HIM FOR BEING A NICE GUY!!!
Bale is good at swearing. And nobody’s mentioned that it’s all done in an American accent. True method.
How would a real director have handled this?
Cool, an actor who isn’t calling it in. Maybe this movie won’t be another POS.
Real men don’t lose their self-control blowing up in an F-word tirade like that. Real men can get the appropriate point across MUCH more effectively speaking in a normal voice, keeping themselves under control the whole time. Bale was simply advertising to the entire world that he does not know how to govern himself. It’s ironic too, because let’s face it — with Hollywood movies in recent years, not much in the way of acting skills are necessary. We are getting to the point where “actors” in these sorts of movies can be effectively computer generated. Bale is a lot less irreplacable than he pretends. In fact, I think that whole scene just showed how (justifiably) insecure he really is.
I work on wall st where tempers certainly flare sometimes but this rant… which starts out reasonable enough (nothing wrong with blowing up), but it goes on too long. Isn’t genuine after the first 30 seconds, it becomes an acting class. Tacky. Dragging it out like that is undignified.
Nobody goes to his films and Bale’s just frustrated because he knows he’s worthless without a bat suit on.
Well–I guess the DP better be able to handle it if he’s wandering around the set while they’re filming. Bale indicated it was the 2nd time. Perhaps the DP needs his short-attention-span ass kicked–might help his career, or he can shoot inanimate objects and walk around them all he wants–that’s another option.
Hey, I like Bale, and no less so after listening to this. After an episode like that, generally you want to go punch your family.
Wow, he lost his temper. So what. I have to wonder if some of you people have ever worked outside of a library or a daycare center. I’ve worked on trading floors where Bale’s rant wouldn’t rank in the top 5 of verbal explosions for any given month. Besides that, the weenies who leaked this are probably far bigger SOB’s than Bale is. So let’s skip the fake outrage, gossip mob lynching on this one.
i dont blame him one bit ..it is work and he is working his ass off why not tell them how he feels ..hes the one acting for the movie? no? tell like it is be real..and i think he did just that way to go Bale…kudos..
Bale was right. The DP should not have been doing anything to distract the actors. Every second wasted by such unprofessional behavior costs money. This episode will cost that DP a lot more than it will cost Bale in future work.
i dont blame him one bit ..it is work and he is working his ass off why not tell them how he feels ..hes the one acting for the movie? no? tell like it is be real..and i think he did just that way to go Bale…kudos..oh well its a real pain in the ass to do the same scene over and over and over again..
Bale, are you reading this? You did a fantastic impersonation of an actor who has let success go to his head. Ever heard of Russell Crowe? Another fine example of someone whose success causes them to think that they are superior to everyone around them and that they’ve got carte blanche when it comes to talking down to people. Some people can handle success, while others clearly can’t. This may shock you, but cinematography is a far more difficult craft than acting ever will be. A movie without cinematography is called a radio program. A movie with bad cinematography is called a box office flop. As a former television producer and professional photographer, I can tell you that lighting is everything. Apparently, the cinematographer mistook you for a professional who wouldn’t fall to pieces if you saw movement in your peripheral vision. Perhaps he mistook you for a gentleman who could express yourself and your dislike of his behavior in a manner befitting your station in life. It sounds to me like you tolerated him moving around on the set during several takes without you saying a thing, thereby giving him the impression that you were okay with it. He was apparently unaware of your “three strikes and you explode rule”. I dare say that your juvenile behavior adds considerable credibility to the claims of your mother and sister. What a charming son and brother you sound like. Must make you feel pretty tough to be able to beat up women — and your own kin no less. Class act all the way. If I didn’t know better, I’d say that you were far more suited and prepared to play the part of the Joker. Talk about hand in glove. Here’s hoping you get the anger management therapy that you so obviously and so badly need. You remind me of the big, bad, brave man who chews out the 16 year old girl behind the counter at McDonalds because you know that she’s not permitted to retaliate or defend herself. Your remarkable use of extreme and excessive profanity suggests an under-educated individual who very likely dropped out of high school and who has or is currently dealing with an addiction issue. Bale — seek professional help for your rage before you become the next O.J. Simpson.
Its like he is 3 years old and needs a timeout. Anyone behaving like this should be ostrasized and not idolized. Stop spending your money on bad role models
Wow, what a dick. Very, very unprofessional.
No one should put up with or excuse this kind of behavior/language. This guy lacks common decency and really ought to look into some form of anger management treatment. You want to guess what might happen to me if I behaved like that at my work place? There are civilized ways in which reasonable people handle conflict. I don’t know what it is with these ‘actors’ – total elitist prima donas. Clean up your act, buddy! You are an embarrassment to yourself and your family.
He’s not throwing things or hitting anyone; he stops in the middle of it to say you’re a nice guy (but)… he’s not walking off the set, and he wants to get back to the scene.
Since there’s no context to go by and for all we know the DP really was doing something maddening, I’ll give him the benefit of a doubt.
(But, I’m not in the biz so I’m not supposed to comment…. oops, too late!)
“Brilliant PR stunt.”
After hearing the tape I absolutely agree.
Great usage of the “F” word….but I’m unconvinced because this was probably staged!
Besides, what a better way to drum up support for a movie?
I play WOW and he would make an awesome raid leader!!!
Bale is god.
Being a prick is a crime in Hollywood?
When, how, huh?
What does playing “make believe” have to do with the Military? The guy got his butt chewed by a low-life, OJ-like
pissant! This wasn’t a real-life situation like a soldier would deal with. Take the money away and this whole exercise is just silly. The director should have a hired person to step up and tell Bale to just shutup and act or he’ll get his pussy ass kicked
Who cares as long as he makes good movies.
So let me get this right, the guy who says eff this and eff that in every sentance of this rant and threatens to kick the effing ass of the DP is questioning the DP’s professionalism? What a child.
One man raised the point that this type of behavior is common in the construction industry or by union members. I happen to be in construction and what he says has an eliment of truth but that does not make it right. If we as movie goers would boycott films where some actor or actress was unable to control their behavior we might just help them to develop more civil habits. I for one will never go to a Christion Boles movie no matter how good the reviews.
Bale’s stock rises as a result. I’m actually impressed that he cares passionately enough about the film to call a spade a spade. He’s right about the doddering DP dweeb being asleep at the wheel.
Consider the opposite: Would the naysayers prefer that he shrug his shoulders and simply mail-in his emotions for the same salary? That does happen, you know. Bale’s intensity is to be applauded because the film’s finances and sweat equity are huge, only to be tripped up by an unfocused stooge on the set.
I laughed out loud when I read this posted comment…good one WrteStuf!:
Sounds like you’ve found SAG’s new negotiator.
Comment by WrteStufLA — February 2, 2009
Christian is being a jerk. There is no excuse for that anger rage. It is truly unprofessional anywhere. He needs counseling. A set crew is part of the team, as is the actor. You do not go off on your peers like this. If I was this guy being assailed by Christian, I’d push back hard and wouldnt be so passive. Christian’s behavior is so wrong here.
These people are of no importance. Bale is acting in a show,,big deal ,,who cares if he’s ranting,,. I found it amusing. The guy he’s yelling at should have started laughing at Bale. I did.
if they would start testing these actors for drugs things like this wouldn’t happen…and it would probably open the doors for other actors who don’t need to be hoppped up on stuff to do thier jobs…and it may just save some lives…
Wow! I’m hugely disappointed in Bale, especially since I enjoy his acting. I can understand getting angry as a consummate professional; however, he rails on and on with F bombs and insults that are way over the pale. I hope he considers taking an Anger Management class or something. There is too much rage in him that can be his undoing. Christian I’m on your side to succeed. Get some help. Seriously! As an individual who has had to deal with his own Demons of Anger, I mean it, get some help Dude! I’m looking forward to T4.
Grade A douchebag
He was getting into character. Simple. Or maintaining it. Get over it.
Bout time this happend to a DP, it happens to us PA’s all the time. Welcome to our everyday world if we’re on a crappy show. Finally, this shit comes to light….
Bale is a solid method actor. He mentally ‘becomes’ his character. By the time production staff gets to the major film level they KNOW how to act on a set when filming is going on, just the same way Bale knows what is expected of him as an actor.
He has a justifiable reason for being angry, however over the top it was.
I find it upsetting when critics label these actors as ‘difficult’ or ‘primadonnas’ when they are simply trying to do their job and people interfere with that. There is a world of difference between being an actor who requires special spring water from Nepal be at a certain termpature on set at all times and being upset with a member of the crew who is expected to KNOW the boundries and how to handle himself during shooting.
I think Bale has a tremendous potential and hopefully the media wont lambaste him on every personal shortcoming he has. He has ‘Bond’ like qualities.
Breaking news from Variety.
Cameron and chef Gordon Ramsay team up for new film.
Acclaimed fim director James Cameron has announced his next film will be: The Ramsaynator. Cameron said, “it’s about a cyborg chef from the past sent into the future to kill restaurant critics. Christian Bale is playing the Ramsaynator because he’s a calm chilled out guy and can really bring the cyborg to life.”
This is nothing compared to the stuff my husband has to listen to at his sales job. For the people outraged, you have no idea what other people have to listen to at their jobs. Enjoy your fantasyland.
Sounds to me too that Bale was right and that the crew boy was being a little idiot!
This guy destroyed a complicated scene and felt no remorse.
Its easy to blame Christian Bale if don´t know the whole context. The political correctness of some of the people here is quite more disgusting! Welcome to the real world pussies!
I totally support Christian…. If you have never been on a movie set then you can’t understand! This crew member is obviously an amateur or utterly unprofessional…. he repeatedly destroys the actor’s concentration by walking around and making lighting adjustments during filming and then rather than apologize when Christian rightfully goes off on him, he makes excuses for his pathetic self.
I’ve spent a decent amount of time on film sets, and I totally understand Christian’s anger. He’s likely filming an emotionally charged scene and his body is already on edge, and then to have an absolutely unrepentant idiot repeatedly prancing around while you’re working (Yes, acting is extremely difficult work) IS INEXCUSEABLE…
Christian’s verbal lashing was well deserved!
anyway he’s a crappy actor
I love it! Go Christian! LMAO!
Grow a set of balls and take it like a man.
Just Christian Bale being the crying little bitch I always knew he was.
Bale is an asshole and a two bit actor to begin with.
Get a real job. These actors pretend to be other people because they hate themselves. The reason why so many become political/environmental/religious activists is because they sense the worthlessness of what they do. A film or a great performance never changed anything unless you included the industry’s part in the moral decline of America. If Bale took his first name seriously and literally, and lived accordingly, then and only then would he know what it is to be significant. Great actor, but what does that matter in the end? Nothing.
Typical, arrogant, snobbish, Hollywood douchebag. What a prima donna.
IF YOU HAVEN’T WORKED ON A FILM SET THEN DON’T COMMENT!!!
You don’t know what the FUCK you are talking about.
I’m sick of these fucking idiots on this comment board who say that Christian Bale has an inflated ego and sense of self-importance! HE IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT…. The success or failure of MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FILMS rests heavily on his shoulders!!! Imagine going to the Super Bowl and you’re the quarterback and the wide receiver starts making phone calls in the middle of the play…. DO YOU UNDERSTAND HOW UNPROFESSIONAL THIS CREW MEMBER WAS BEING?!
Yeah, big deal. All the posters here are correct,Mr.Bale was trying to work AND you DO 14 hour minimum days on a set.My experience is with the Pippi Longstockings movie filmed in my hometown and I own a small indie recording label and I work headliner shows occasionally with my buds at Gemstone productions. If I were to do that on a set,I’d expect to be fired. The new generation is all a “twitter” about Hollywood,I say big deal.I was far more excited about 3D engines* and developing direcTV and 3D gaming when I was a “youngster”.
Mr.Bale was definately doing his job.
*3DFX-you may have heard of them once upon a time.
I don’t care about what Bale said…. He was kind of right, kind of wrong. If he did not use the word FUCK. this would not be an issue.
The real problem is that it looks that this move sucks… The Trailor looks bad. Could have been the pressure of being in a film that you know has issues.
CE
Wow, talking about professional, look at the way he talked to DP. Is that professinal? No matter how screwed up DP was, Bale should talk to him in a professional manner in which he claimed he his. I don’t care what profession you are and I don’t even care if you are the president of US. If you talked to your co-worker or employees like that, you should creamed. Then again, that is how Hollywood talk to each others every day anyway. Why would anyone be surprised. And on top of that he is British, that is how they talk.
And then, I read thru people’s comments, “you don’t know what happened prior to that”. My ass! Folks, would they want to send anything to the insurance if there was something that wouldn’t jeopardize the movie? And of course, the people talked about privacy. When you’re doing a scence it is always out in the public eyes. Quite often, tourists (your fans that pay your salary) always dropped by.
Why do all of the good guys like Heath Ledger, River Phoenix, John Belushi, Chris Farley, et al go too soon but people like Christian Bale stick around?
Because they’re drug addicts and Bale’s not.
@brad – In the military (and YES, I served–1969 to 1972) it’s a different story altogether: lives are at stake. AND it’s done to condition a soldier to avoid reacting readily to meaningless aggravation.
On the other hand, this is just an example of one more forgettable actor having a hissy fit over a mistake that happened during the production of one more forgettable moving picture.
I have to agree with those who observe that a 3-1/2 minute rant is indicative of some psychopathology.
Bale is a pissant. You DO NOT speak to people that way. Of course this just reaffirms my opinion of Bale – a mental case.
McG doesn’t fare any better here, he’s in charge he needed to step in and calm things down, of course McG is probably afraid of Bale too.
If I was Shane I would have slapped the ‘f**k’ out of Bale’s mouth. That was abuse, pure and simple. Poor little actor, got distracted while pretending *rme*
What’s the big deal! Bale is VG actor and actor’s are a bit paranoid anyway. If you really want to hear a bit of foul, what about a face off between Christian Bale and Colin Farrell? I’ll bet you’d be peeing the green for days after that one.
That is beautiful, sure CB lost it but his rage is not unjustified. Surprise surprise Christian Bale is very passionate about his work, he is not an emotionless accountant as should be evident by the fact that his films dont suck. I’d be shocked to hear this from a talentless screen puppet (wont call him an actor) like Hayden Christanson, but not Bale. He’s in the middle of a scene and some d-bag is screwing around with lights in his line of sight? Fire the DB, make another great film.
That was awesome. F&%K you and F&%K this and F&@k everyone. A true perfectionist speaks his mind. I’m buying a ticket to this movie!
“SERIOUSLY, DO YOU WANT ME TO GO TRASH YOUR F%#KING LIGHTS!”
in my best Homer Simpson voice “OOOO Bale you’re so scarey”
get a F%*%*& life you F&%(&% loser, the best thing that can happen to that film is you walkin off the set.
It makes people feel good about themselves for a minute to be able to pass judgment. Woe to all of you that might have a low moment posted to the internet – never mind if this was truly a repeated problem that led to the outburst. I guess this makes fodder for the inane celebrepress and legitimizes a staggering number of truly stupid jobs for a couple more days though.
And as people pointed out above – the town is rife with this type of treatment of people – usually for things much less legitimately upsetting.
Geez, Christian….it’s not like you have a “real” job. I mean, geeezus, you’re just an actor.
I give it two years and he’ll be doing cash for gold commercials.
Typical stupid media non-story. Yawn. By releasing the tapes, it looks like someone at the studios wants to slow down Christian’s career. These types of incidents happen everyday in all kinds of workplaces, albeit maybe with less swear words. But that’s Hollywood, swearing like this is normal to people in the propaganda business. Also, the average R rated movies have more intense, foul mouthed scenes than this. I smell hypocrisy by these commenters.
Considering Christian carries the movie, it’s more than understandable. We’re not all equal, even at the workplace. Go Christian!
Try doing some real acting, like on the stage, where all sorts of real life interruptions happen constantly. Audience coughing, talking, answering cell phones, getting up to go to the bathroom, props not in place, sets not working, scenery not working and so on and so on.
Film sets are frustrating places. Extremely frustrating. There are so many things that can go wrong (and most of them do). Endurance and patience are probably the greatest virtues any cast or crew could hope to develop.
So it’s not hard to see why the DP was acting stoopid, and why Christian responded the way he did. One dude was feeling insecure about his lights, the other about his performance. Big deal. But there are MUCH better ways of responding than simply blowing up on an underling. 99% of the time these explosions never solve anything; I don’t care how much you yell or get yelled at- when was the last time that was the solution to your problem?
What a jerk! He’s just convinced another family not to see any of his films. Maybe no work for this moron might show him a little compashion. He can wait tables and have the customers speak to him like this. Someone should have punched him out. I’d take unemployment for that opportunity.
Everyone who say this is totaly normal and okay is a poor little child. Sorry, but a grown up doesn`t speak so, he just doesn`t! If someone does that and say it`s okay, I say he is a fucked up little redneck brat.
Christian Bail argues how long? One and a half minute? That is a way to long! He ist just an actor and not the director. He can yell a few seconds, but it is the work of the director to talk to the other peoples. Bale should get a coach for his anger.
I’ve always wondered how actors could be oblivious to crew milling all about during filming. I guess they do find it distracting, which I think is totally reasonable. Sure he overreacted, but this little episode would have been over much sooner if the DP had just said, “You’re right, it won’t happen again.” Yeah it’s demeaning, but it happens to the best of us.
In any case, I’m sure this is all just marketing. As succesful as Bale is, he isn’t a movie star on the same level as Clooney, Cruise, Pitt, DiCaprio, etc., so he’s got to make headlines until he gets there.
This sounds like a second rate Michael Bay clip…
I mean come on, Bay does this everyday..
Brad, you are an idiot. This isn’t the military and Christian Bale was not their commander. Just because people get their butt chewed in the military does not mean that is acceptable behavior in the private sector.
In the military lives on are the line and being a hard nose will save your life and others. What was the consequence in this movie? The scene will have to be reshot? Gimmie a break. Flex your muscles elsewhere.
What you don’t know is that the DP is a HUGE fan of the movie Team America: World Police. Apparently, the DP was off camera watching Team America when the heroes in that film blew up some terrorists while yelling “Surprise Cock-fags”! The DP actually did a little dance during this scene, raised his hands above his head, jumped in the air and bellowed an impassioned “Surprise Cock-fags…Oh, that was f*ckin’ awesome!” No wonder Bale was distracted and pissed.
Even if the DP was totally in the wrong gives no excuse for this prima donna (who wants us to line his pockest w/ cash) the right go off on this level, state your complaint and move on. What an ASS. The more I learn about the real character of “actors” the less impressed I am w/ Hollywood “royalty.”
Bale is awesome here, fuck all you up tight pussies.
People can say, “Were you there?” or “Did you witness the whole thing?” Bottom line, this guy was unprofessional, in fact childish in his tantrum fit throughing. This is not permitted in a professional environment. If the DP was wrong, maybe he should be disciplined in some manner; however, this adult boy needs to be professionally sat in the corner, also.
why so serious?
CB is probably in the right. He is a professtional actor that takes his job seriously. He expects the same of the cast & crew. Not to mention his role in this movie will bring some credibility to back to the Terminator sage. T3 sucked!
Hollyworship is alive and well among the pathetic commenters here who are so ready to excuse this psychotic behavior. The guy must be off his meds to continue ranting like that. And if he’s not on meds to begin with, he certainly should be!
It is one thing to bark at the guy for screwing up . . . if in fact that is what he did. It is quite another to carry on out of control like a raving lunatic.
So many of these actors and actresses are petty, venal jerks who quite honestly think the world revolves around them. I would never, ever go to a film that he is in, or in which he has any interest.
I think I will pass on seeing Terminator Salvation.
To anyone who is justifing this. You are the idiots. No one should be talked to like this. It’s un-professional and Bale is a lowlife for doing it. I’m sure that anyone of you who agree with this guy was treated and it was done to you, you would not accept it. I know I would have probably smaked him in the mouth.
It would have been awesome if the DP started doing jumping jacks during the next take.
You don’t treat people this way. Spoiled, catered to celebrities mistakenly assume they’re better than everyone else and should be worshipped. Bale showed his lack of class, lack of dignity, lack of basic human respect.
I’m glad to see McG has control of his set, grow a pair dude.
Waaaa! What a baby. These actors are all the same. They get some money and suddenly they are really tough and powerful. If Christian Bale was yelling at me like that, it would take an awful lot for me to hold back my laughter. I mean really, Christian Bale is throwing a tantrum, what’s funnier than that? He would probably piss himself if he was locked in the cage with the light guy.
oh please…how is this soooo0000OOOO bad? like people at work dont blow up??? and yet we and the media condone MUCH WORSE BEHAVIOR.
what a farce!
so now folks want to boycott CB over this.
go for it.
I for one remain a fan of his work. Heath had personal and drug problems and CB has personal & anger problems. big deal!
posters seem to expect saints out of actors & musicians and it just aint gonna happen.
so no actor can loose it? thats a crime? well if it is then why hasnt anyone filed charges at CB?
…and yet you can do coke & pot and be president so what is really the issue that someone should get angry?
…believe me I have seen & experienced just as bad in other professions.
Yuck, what a bigmouth actor. These are the people who think they are better than the rest of us and treat flight attendants like garbage. Their arrogance preceeds them everywhere they go. Liberal scum bags.
What a prick. Somebody needs to kick the crap out of this loser.
Wow! The flyover soccer moms are aghast! Doesn’t Bale realize that without them he will never draw the big grosses?!
See, the problem is that the people who accept this kind of thing are either willing to allow people to do this to them (for a price) and have no pride or self-esteem, or they would do this to someone else and need to stick by their comrade.
Does anyone here REALLY have sympathy for Hollywood actors? As someone already said, a child could master their “craft” and often do. In fact animals have been known to be used as “actors,” and even computer generated non-humans. So give me a break all you “I’m an actor too, so I understand,” because not only have most people never heard of Christian, they certainly have never heard of YOU, so don’t puff yourself up false empathy.
Also, those who say, “you folks have never been in the military, this stuff goes on all the time”! I would say that that still doesn’t make it right, and any soldier who used this language in George Washington’s Revolutionary army would have been fined, or worse — it WASN’T tolerated in the military before our complete societal degeneration. So don’t judge what’s right and wrong by blowhard a-holes in the military, and for crying out loud PLEASE don’t compare the stress of the military to acting in a Hollywood film – there is no comparison between the work, nor the reward.
II say he was working hard everything was ideal regrettably someone screwed up the scene. Who wants to take twenty takes to get one scene done suitably for a 2 minute part of the movie? That man should have heard the director shout action and left the lights alone.
I won’t be seeing any more Christian Bale movies nor will I see any other movies with arrogant leads in them. These people need to be taken down a notch.
Anyone who says “no human being should ever be spoken to that way” is a complete moron. Just because you’re calm and collected at this moment, do not judge the situation and circumstances which led to this incident.
I’ve been witness to some of the most vile, vindictive, hateful anger and yelling I’ve ever seen just driving to work in traffic. People flip the f-ck out ALL the time… and sometimes with damned good reason.
If you’ve ever worked in ANY union job or on ANY factory floor, in the military, in the fire department of police department… or ANYWHERE where men really put in a hard (or risky) day’s work, you’re USED to this language. Sometimes people need to be called on the carpet.
I’d love to live in the utopian love-filled world you judgmental dweebs live in… but that’s not real life. Go back to hemming and hawing over global warming, indignantly acting offended by Michael Phelps’ smoking pot, or bitching about the price of cappuccino at Starbucks.
The rest of us have better things to do… like runing the country and protecting the world.
I am a surgeon, in a way like the actor in a movie, the “central character” in an operating room. This behavior used to be tolerated (without the profanity) 20 years ago. It is not tolerated today, no matter “what led to it”.
If I unloaded like that on a nurse, I’d be out of the hospital shortly, for sure up before the State Board of Medical Examiners, and whichever hospital I went to operate next, under close surveillance. The fact that Hollywood tolerates this in today’s day and age is a testament to the fact that despite Hollywood’s ideological concern for the “little guy” and distrust of “big business”; Hollywood bows, scrapes, and abases itself before the almighty dollar, or any jerk who delivers the dollar.
Next time you hear any of these prima donnas bloviate about Darfur, racism, or whatever, remember how they are on the set.
Apparently anyone who has never heard this and is ‘outrage’ has never been in a business meeting.
Really now, why should any of you care.. if you really listen to the conversation, his anger was controlled on many accounts, every time he made his point and said lets get back to work “DP” would get another pointless word trying to defend his actions or placate Bale… there is a point where people need to shut it and that should have happened during minute 1. oh yes and for all people on here with negative reactions to this. Imagine Christian Bale is saying this to you. “Get a FUCKING Life!”
I’m seeing a lot of whining in these comments, and I don’t understand it. He blew up because this was a difficult, likely very intense scene, that was screwed up multiple times by the same person. I would have gone off on him too. Someone here said that actors have the easiest jobs onset. That’s grossly inaccurate. The emotional investment some of the better actors in Hollywood put into these kinds of scenes is very taxing, and especially for someone who struggles with their temper, it can mess with their state of mind.
Is Bale completely in the right? No. But he got over it and the project went forward. Bale obviously put it behind him. I’m personally angrier at the person who leaked this so long after the fact for petty revenge. Smearing someone’s public image in a clip that, while disturbing to listen to, is without context, to me is completely inexcusable. I’m disappointed that Bale has such anger issues, but at the same time I pity him that he has to deal with this mistake being broadcast to the world so some jackoff can have his revenge.
And I agree with the comments that this is like a studio PR stunt for the film.
I miss the days when actors were owned by the movie companies. The director could have told Chris to shut the hell up and stop acting like a baby.
Only Patty Blagojevich could drop more F-bombs in a conversation.
Reminds me of the movie he made, “American Pyscho”. A outta control maniac, only this was real.
I wish I could say stuff like that to my coworkers. They probably deserve it more than that unprofessional idiot. Bale is a man and he is pissed. I like him now. Unlike most pole smokin actors.
All Hale Bale. I think I am going to tell my staff the same thing today and motivate them.
Cool.
Bale used to be one of my favorite actors, but after this, I don’t know. Due to the the ease and length of his rant, he leads me to believe that he’s used to speaking to people this way. What a dick!
right on….bitch that guy out…when your one of the best young actors in the world today..you can bitchslap anyone!
That was great! Come on folks, we’ve *all* lost it at one time in our lives. Don’t you remember the definition of the word “stress”? It’s the pent up energy generated by not giving in to the desire to choke the living shit out of someone. I think it’s a PR stunt myself. Hey, he’s an *actor*, how do we know the whole thing isn’t fake? Just think of the phony phone calls you can create with this clip. Classic.
“Anger is an energy”
Johnny Rotten – Public Image Limited
I send you blessings for losing your behavior like that. you know everyone makes mistakes no matter how you feel about it. I have learned that sometimes the hard way. It helps to go and meditate and work out.
Diana
Bale is like most F-ing actors. Like babies.
C’mon. Look at Shane Hurlbut’s imdb profile. None of those films can be considered visually stunning. Perhaps he was the wrong person for the job in the first place. Given Christian Bale’s experience in visually stunning movies (think more Empire of the Sun than Batman–but Batman was good) he probably picked up on a thing or two along the way and can see that this guy’s not hacking it. Plus, how many people don’t want to say this to some fellow co-worker who isn’t pulling their weight?
Oh Man, this was “Classic”!!! I think Bale was in the right on this one. Yeah, a lot of people say, “Hey, they are actors…they don’t really work for a living”.
Well, I have to disagree. Yes, they make a lot of money. And yes, the are actors and live the high life. But, they are what they are. And, that is their profession and they get paid to provide us entertainment.
So Back Off on Christian Bale. He was in the right. The idiot that ruined the scene needs to be beaten. Hollywood is on a strict timeline. Any deviation from that means money lost.
We would all be eating popcorn and paying bucks to see this on the screen if it were scripted. I’ve had worse language from my daughter. This is just the way it is in high stress situations. If the DP can’t get it together he doesn’t need to be there.
Sounds like Christian is right on this and had a right to be angry. Obviously, the DP is an amatuer and unprofessional, and messed up the scene several times. Hey Christian – keep ‘em in line!
Unbelievable that Mcg didn’t control HIS actor. The AD didn’t step in. That kind of pussy climate is created at the top. Meaning the director. The DP has every right to blow a take or even call cut if there is a problem with the shot. The dp is in charge of every aspect of the image and it doesn’t matter if the actor was brilliant if the shot wont make the screen because of some photographic problem that needs adjustment.
Mcg steals shots frame for frame from other movies, can’t control his actors, doesn’t stand up for his crew, and he calls himself a director!!
Ha
I wonder how many people that are trashing Christian Bale have ever cursed like that at the guy that just cut you off in traffic. We’re all human.
Ah, if only TMZ were around back when Charlie Chaplin was directing.
Thank you for posting this. Another movie I will be sure to tag for me and my kids as a “do not see”. In fact, I will just tag the actor and make sure we avoid and and all movies he is in. I am looking for real men in movies. He is nothing but a bully. Very unimpressive.
Sorry, “brad,” but that wasn’t the military. And for those who want to excuse Bale’s behavior because of the hour, or because of imagined extenuating circumstances, you’re just being apologists.
I’m sorry to see there wasn’t a grown man on the set. You know, someone who would’ve told let-me-at-him Bale to either put up or shut up. My guess is that Bale wouldn’t have actually touched the DP. Nevertheless, a grown man would’ve sent Bale to the showers–or, had Bale actually thrown hands, shoved Bale’s teeth down his throat.
Immature, stunted, schoolyard-bully mentalities like Bale’s don’t have to be tolerated.
Oh, and Bale: Next tirade, pick an accent before you start, and stick with it until you finish your little temper tantrum.
–Mike
Actors need to relize, they are only one minute away from being waiters and waitress’. I’m not say the DP was right, I’m just saying these nothings like Bale need to take better care of those around them.
Actors work longer days than 99% of the people commenting here will ever work. Try having first call before the sun is up and then working 16 hours a day. You’re telling me that if you were well into production and filming a pivotal scene you might not be upset if it were ruined. You’re right, no one deserves to be talked to like that but give Bale a break. The intense schedule, lack of sleep, etc. can make anyone snap, even the most saintly of people.
I’ll tell you what, if anyone ever talked to me like that they would have fired me because I would have shut his pie hole real quick. I would have been in his face so quick he would have never known what hit him. What a punk brat!
Again, why do people worship these losers like Bale? This guy is a nobody. He will not even be remembered in 10-20 years.
In any other industry in the world an employee flying off the handle like this would end up in an instant termination.
As a member of the Screen Actors Guild and having been on many sets in my lifetime, this “attitude” of Christian’s is totally unprofessional and is a very strong indicator as to why the rest of the world should stop listening to these types of bozos telling the rest of the world how to live.
BTW, this is not the military or a life or death situation, it’s the entertainment industry for crying out loud. Also, while this type of activity does go on in the military, this type of behavior in the US military WILL get you into serious trouble.
His behavior on the jobsite is disgusting and he should be blackballed by the industry until he learns how to conduct himself in a civilized society.
OK the DP pissed Bale off. Stuff happens. But I would let Bale disrespect me for about 20 seconds then after that Bale would get his ass kicked on “his” set during “his” scene.
Bale is a pompous ass.
I’ve been reading some of the ludicrous posts here saying that Christian Bale should be fired from Batman 3 and any future movies because of this leaked audio tape….how laughable is that?
What a bunch of crap over a media induced, sensational use of the word “FUCK”….Just how many times did Al Pacino use that word in “Scarface” and now it is a celebrated movie? Hey America, FUCK OFF!
Ahh. I fell for this PR stunt last night. Wrote a justification for Bale that I stand by. But a later comment brought me to my senses.
Yep. Masterful PR stunt. This will be enough to get Bale on all the talk shows talking about anger, military, T4, how he gets into character, etc. Bale and Cruise must have the same publicist, eh?
It is amazing how many of you see this behavior as perfectly acceptable. Is Hollywood the new standard for American manners, morals, and civility? They have already warped our children’s minds with their radical political views. Come on parents..teach your kids to question the motives of Hollywood, TV and the press.
I never heard of Jimmy Stewart or Katharine Hepburn going off like this because of some small distraction. Deport the limey. <>. Neither Hepburn or Stewart were method actors. Bale is a known method actor who immerses himself in the character and the scene 100%. He’s not just speaking lines, he’s living the moment. People who want to condemn Bale for his abusive language toward the DP OBVIOUSLY hasn’t worked in the entertainment industry. Out of a 14-18hour work day this was 3 MINUTES. Small potatoes. I’ve seen actors nearly come to blows with the director constantly interrupting the scene to adjust something or someone. Listen to this altercation with headphones and hear everything that’s going on and you’ll see the DP is a whiny little piss ant who tries to justify ruining the scene. He obviously is ruining a close-up of Bale talking to Bryce Dallas Howard and this guy is walking around behind Bryce. Bale cannot invest himself 100% emotionally in the scene if this guy is wandering around in his field of vision.
and please, PLEASE DO NOT relate this incident to your job or career environment if its not entertainment industry related. You have NO IDEA what this industry is and has been for a long time. There are many recorded incidents of Humphrey Bogart, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford blowing their tops at directors, on-set crew etc. Actors are spoiled children and needed to be treated as such. What astonishes me here is the McG does not step in an diffuse the situation immediately.
Anyone who says Bale shouldn’t have blown his top at this guy obviously isn’t as committed to their career as Bale is. He is obviously a very serious actor who takes what he does seriously. The update is that Bale and the DP are fine now. What Bale is trying to drive home is this guys unprofessionalism in NOT respecting an actor while he’s working and cameras are rolling.
Anyone surprised by this kind of language and temperment has obviously NEVER worked on a Hollywood film set. This is actually mild compared to the outtake of Dustin Hoffman going off on his director that was leaked a couple of years ago.
First and foremost to all the PUSSIES on this comment section decrying Bale as some out of control prick with anger issues let me be clear: acting is a craft. It is a science unto itself. It is no different than engaging in any form of manual labor, anybody that tells you differently just doesn’t know what the shot is. If you’ve never had the opportunity or chance to dramatize thought in an artificial setting then you wouldn’t have an iota of an idea of the degree of difficulty involved. Christian Bale takes his job seriously. He lives the character. That’s his method, albeit I think its a destructive one, but that’s how he does it. Its his bread and butter. Its what puts food on the table. The dude is just trying to do his job to the best of his ability. He’s protecting his craft. Period. And you can’t do the job when you have needlessly inane interruptions by tech guys whose agendas are at odds with the performers. His outburst in my mind, although a bit excessive at times, was totally justified.
Yeah, McG should’ve stepped in and defend his actor, that what a director does, crisis management, but he’s a punk, and that’s just how he rolls. No suprise there Mr Hollywood. But c’mon just put yourself in Bale’s shoes and get out of the stereotype of Actors as divas for one second.
Why is everyone sticking up for this jerk. You actors do take yourself why too seriously. How about trying to take on a job where ‘real’ concentration is needed. Lets say, for example … neurosurgery, when someone’s life or ability to walk is actually at stake. Here, I could understand the tension created when someone got in your way,….but acting out a couple of lines????? Please.
I would have to agree with those who say that we weren’t there and we don’t know what led up to this blow-up. If the DP is shooting a major motion picture, he should be well aware of what is required to do that professionally! However, most peoples’ lives are so utterly pathetic they have to interject themselves into every little thing in the media like this in an attempt to squelch the pain of their own mediocrity.
Also, I like the military comment as that is totally true! Most of the people in this country (U.S.A.) would rather reduce a drill sergeant to a creampuff cheerleader as opposed to preparing a soldier for combat! Grow a pair of balls and try to act like men for a change instead of crying about someone going on a tirade and using the “f” word. You probably let your kids watch worse on cable! What a pathetic bunch of emasculated pukes! If it bothers you that bad, go talk it over with your freaking therapist and have him/her powder your chapped backside!
The Terminator movie series is mostly special effects and photography. It is not an actors movie. There are literally a hundred actors that could put on the funny suit and speak the corny lines other than Bale.
Bale shows himself to be a self absorbed, difficult to manage, disruptive, team stressing prick. If I am producing or investing in a movie, I don’t want to take the risk that I am going to have some problem with this guy. I get someone else to put on the suit and stand in front of the explosions.
I really just want to know how Jim Cameron or Michael Bay would have reacted as directors in the same situation?? (I’m guessing they wouldn’t be hiding behind the monitor, no matter how BIG the star!) Heads would roll! A disgrace to all concerned really, for total lack of self-control. People shouldn’t be walking or ranting, waste of precious and limited time! “Restraint” is a very admirable quality in this industry or any other for that matter…
What a dick! Even if the DP did screw up, NO ONE deserves being talked to like that. He won’t be around long anyway.
Bale is very lucky that he didn’t get his ass kicked. What a pussy, must have known the guy wouldn’t fight back. Hey Bale, look me up next time you want to kick somebody’s ass. You act like your someone’s little bitch!!
This guy is a prick….one more reason to not see the film. There was a reason I will no longer pay to see Tom Cruise film and now I have a reason I will no longer pay to see a Chritian Bale film. What a wanker
wow…you should all shut up and look in the mirror…like you have never had a bad day and got pissed…grow up and quit being so two faced
We don’t have any of the pre-text that determine the conditions under which triggered Bale’s outburst. A bad day on set feels horrible and is one of the most draining experiences I’ve ever had.
If the DP were rolling on a shot and that making adjustments after action was called then it was his fault, and if he asked, or warned not to repeat it and continued to do so despite the actors and more importantly the directors wishes than he should of asked to cut. Or, made the adjustments and let the actors take a break until he and the Director were satisfied.
It’s unfortunate that McG let this go on… He should have intervened and sat down with Bale or asked the DP or Bale to step off set for minute to let the tempers cool.
The fact that McG didn’t do anything is kind of what the issue is here… It’s his show, and he should be leading environment. Instead he passive aggressively sat back and let this outburst continue and made no efforts to resolve the matter right out of the gate. The only thing I can think of is that he wanted Bale to let the DP have it, because he was taking issue with it as well, but didn’t want to do anything about it on his own.
Actors may be quirky and seemingly fragile, but the good ones are always committing a lot of themselves mentally, emotionally and physically. Bale is one of the ones that does all the hard work, and if someone is disrespecting or compromising those efforts than he has a right to get upset… It’s just a shame that it went that far and he’s been “outed” on it.
I still respect the work he does, and the leads efforts should always be appreciated through a consistent level of professional set etiquette. I’ve seen DP’s pull crap like that and frustrate people in the same way, just not to this degree though.
Whole point though, the Director failed his cast & crew here, the directors lead on resolving these things is required. ANd, McG didn’t take accountability.
this is what you get for paying these a-holes
that much money for acting. I would of quit
and told him to go fu– himself!!
It is amazing that he is attempting to hold someone else accountable for a lack of “professionalism” while he is a shining example of someone who is completely devoid of anything that resembles that word.
I just added Christian Bale to a list of actors that I am currently boycotting.
Thanks for ruining Batman for me Christian. Get your nose out of the air! Seriously!!!!!!
Um, so why is coming out NOW? Six months after the fact? Between his parents making a fuss about being denied another handout and this, someone seems to have it in for Bale and is doing whatever they can to tarnish the guy. So the yelled at someone? Big fucking deal. Whoever’s bitching about this obviously has never set foot in Hollywood. If you don’t get screamed at every day in Hollywood, you’re not alive.
Christian Bale is NOT good enough so speak to anyone in that tone. What a total “A-Hole” If I was the DP I would have told him to Shut the F up and when he tried to attack me after talking back to him I would have kicked his ass in self defense and sued him for everything he’s got.
Christian Bale is a total A-hole, I have less then Zero respect for him or any of these Hollywood “A-Holes” that think they are Gods. I have a million times more respect for a Nurse, Doctor, Police Officer, Firefighters, Paramedics and Armed Service personal, people who actually dedicate there lives to helping people instead of pretending to be one of those people and making millions of dollars for it.
F-Off Hollywood, your days are numbered.
Too bad the apology isn’t on tape and worthy of the same PR.
I don’t care what happened before or how much the DP did wrong, there are always 2 ways to get things done and Bale has shown how unprofessional he really is. A pro would have handled it with grace and upheld the DP’s integrity as well as his own. Now, there is no way I will support the Terminator Salvation with my ticket purchase or movie rental and to hollywood that’s all that really matters. Way to go Bale!
I actually don’t blame the guy- Imagine you’re doing your job and it’s 6:00 and you’re just ready to go home and someone comes and tells you that they lost the work you did for them and they need you to do it again. These guys may be full of self importance but it’s easy to forget that these movies are a business- investors put millions of dollars on the line each day and screwups cost big money. Moreover, the more you make the more true is the “time is money concept.”
What’s the big deal? My boss talks to me that way everyday.
Just man-up and deal with it cowboy.
anyone who thinks christian is wrong here is a pussy and doesn’t understand what it takes to be a professional or a man.
Abusive. And prolonged abuse at that. I can understand snapping and yelling for a few seconds, but to not accept an apology and to go on and on and on is simply sadistic.
I would have broken his fricking kneecaps.
No sane person would go to one of Bale’s movies after this – unless they are one of those beaten down abused slugs who are attracted to monsters like this because they remind them of daddy.
@Bruce
After basic, I never tolerated anyone, and I mean anyone trying to chew me out like that in public. That shit isn’t acceptable in the military, it isn’t acceptable in the civilian world, and it isn’t acceptable to actors.
If he said that shit to me I would have kicked his ass.
This outburst reflects a massive problem with our culture: celebrity worship. Christian Bale is a spoiled prick because the public loves him for being a good-looking guy who can act well and he can therefore get away with virtually anything. And the public worships people like him because it’s much easier to worship Hollywood stars and movie characters than make something of our own lives. Shame on everyone!!!!
He’s RIGHT.
Christian Bale IS a professional
and he’s tired of the bullshit.
Period. I can understand his
frustration.
This was on the set of a movie set, not anything that matters. Professional and actors are two words that have no place together…
I am sorry but that kind of language is completely unacceptable in any professional setting. I don’t know why the entertainment industry has evolved to a point where that kind of thing is tolerated. This reminds me of the crap that assistants have to take from talentless hack agents on a daily basis. Time for manners and acting professionally to make it into all aspects of entertainment.
I don’t care who walked where. You CANNOT speak to another human being like that. If I was the DP, I would have punched his lights out. The hell with the job…what a piece of crap.
It’s amazing reading these posts! The stories that are build on what little information we hear in the recording!
Clearly Bale is not Christian.
Perhaps he apologized afterwards. If so, I will sympathize with the actor. Since there is no confirmation of this, I will assume not.
I will therefore not see this movie and urge others to do likewise.
I was on a set once as an extra, the camerman asked me to do something in the scene which I did. The director was angry at me for doing it, then right away the apologized.
The continued anger is too much.
One rease I like all Jimmy Stewart movies, was that I knew he was a good man with a good heart. It appears this actor has a few personal problems.
What a loser. Just goes to show you that we’ve created this kind of “holier-than-thou” attitude amongst actors and actresses by putting them up on a pedestal just because they are in movies. If I was that guy I would have kicked Bale’s ass for talking to me like that. The real question is who does he think HE is? Get a real job Christian.
Christian Bale – Asshole.
McG – Unable to handle his people.
DP – Perhaps flighty and unskilled in the ways of being on set and bad judgement-prone.
The commentors on this story – Shockingly knowledgeable in the ways of EVERYTHING. Perhaps we should get all these readers to run the country. Now THAT would make a great movie!
The DP, director and AD are panty wastes. For any grown man to allow another to talk him that way without a smack down shows you what a pack of starfuckers this team is. Christian Bale, well he needs to be bitch slapped.
he needs to control his anger..that’s too bad..
I love everyone explaining the rules: “You do not step into an actor’s sight line during a scene.” Or, “You don’t know the context.” What context do you need to know that would allow an egomaniacal putz to scream at someone for 10 minutes in front of 100 of his colleagues? Did anyone tell Bale he’s an f’ing actor, not a brain surgeon? So, if he screws up a take, they just do another one but if the DP does, he gets skewered by a guy who gets paid $250,000 a day to dress up in a silly costume and pretend to be an action hero. This kind of behavior is a cancer in this business. I hope people think twice about hiring him again. Does anyone actually go see a film because Christian Bale is in it?
If ANY manager in a corporation blew up like this and cursed at his employee, he’d be sued. If a politician (especially a conservative) got pissed at an intern or employee who was unprofessional and did this, he’d be sued and the press would lynch him.
And all these Hollywood liberal schmucks are the first ones to yell and scream about “workers rights”, and “union” this and that, and “social justice”… but you see them in unscripted, honest moments, and they are nothing but spoiled brat arrogant abusive primadonna PRIGS.
I think the dude should quit, hire a lawyer, and sue the shit out of the actor, the director, the studio, and claim that he was publicly humiliated by Bale’s actions, by the release of the tape, etc. SUE the bastards, dude!
Bale sounds like Chef Ramsey, everyone else sounds like a whiny puss lucky to be there.
On a film thats got to cost $100 million dollars I’d expect the upmost professionalism from the crew. Bale must be under extraordinary pressure.
It’s big business for big boys. Everyone needs thick skin in hollywood. If youv’e ever been in the infantry that blow up wouldn’t be very devastating
He is the American Psycho don’t forget that movie…
shut up already
Oh for the love of… Haven’t any of you people ever lost your temper with another person? Even at work? Not one of you people complaining about Bale’s shouting has ever raised your voice at anyone in your lives?
Like the sensible people pointed out unless you were present on the set at that time, you have no idea what the lead-up or the lead-out to that situation was.
And anyone thinks that’s bad language must be leaving in a house made of candy cane and have the Three Little Pigs and Snow White as neighbours, because you definitely don’t live in the real world.
For me the only thing disappointing is that this report was carried on this site.
“Actor looses temper and swears” isn’t a news story. It’s a piece of PR crap usually lapped up by journalists who are too lazy or too busy to report real news. Neither of which I took you to be, Nikki.
Wow! Do you kiss your mother and sister with that mou…oh wait…no I guess you don’t.
Typical Hollywood Elititst. A spoiled angry actor who, in reality is a punk. I’m sure his ‘publicist’ will have him go out and perform at some “Save the Whales” function and the media will eat it up to save his reputation.
Bottom line for me, is that now that I know the real jerk, I won’t go see his movies. Just like I won’t watch anythin Alec Baldwin and the other psychopaths put out.
In other words, in the words of Christian Bale “Seriously we are fu*kin’ done, professionally”
How many times can you drop the f-bomb in one tirade? Christian calls himself a professional, yet cannot seem to speak or behave in a professional manner. There is no excuse for the DP breaking onto the set while cameras are rolling, but to give someone a pass for that type of tearing up regardless of WHO it is is just pathetic. You want a professional DP, treat him in a professional manner. You want to rant and rave like a lunatic, then buddy, you just might work with the same kind of ding dongs.
These stars are indeed out of touch with the real world, as are the directors. I’ve worked as a grip in Hollywood for years and have seen actors, directors and producers flip out over minor issues and have seen them behave as if everyone should bow before them. A lot of them need be dropped in the middle of a very bad neighborhood with no car and no cell phone. They have no idea of what the real world is like for the most part. I’m not writing about all of them, but a good chunk of them are like the spoiled Mr. Bale, who in fact has had it easy his entire life. Completely out of touch with reality he is.
Clearly Bale’s pissed but we don’t know the context. So this is not a fair post. Or one that dignifies such prominence on your site. What if the DP had done this three times in the afternoon? And just wasn’t getting it? Most people have moments of “losing it” so it’s unfair to make this the sum and substance of Bale.
Getting a moment on film that’s real and believable is hard work and requires a lot of concentration. If some guy is making a habit of wandering around the set when the camera’s rolling it’s going to spook the actors. If the actor is trying to give his all he’s going to have a hard time doing it if even part of his concentration is focused on: “I wonder if Bruce is going to being milling about in the shot at some point?”
If the DP was doing what Bale says he was doing after the camera was rolling, then he’s guilty of a lack of respect and knowledge of the process. And if McG or McFly (or whomever) also can’t demonstrate knowledge of the process then Bruce deserved a dressing down.
On a set like “Terminator Salvation” every minute wasted can cost the studio tens-of-thousands of dollars. Probably the real culprit here is the director and his lack of control. He’s the dictator on the set and has to be. The set has to have absolute discipline and lines of accountability. If it doesn’t you end up with stuff like this.
Should Bale have walked away and demanded a meeting with the director and producers and established some ground rules rather than rant? Probably. But what may be behind the rant is weeks of a weak-willed director that can’t assert himself.
The 24-plus days of tape of Bale being a nice guy on set is not on the website. A couple of minutes of him acting like an angry child is. As they say in the news business: If it bleeds it leads. However, this kind of stuff is below you Nikki. And Harvey Levin and TMZ hardly need any more promotion. These are the guys that specialize in fat celebrities at the beach and revealing which actors are buying stool softeners. This sort of stuff is sensationalist, childish and lacks any context or reporting. Please leave it to the bottom feeders.
Bale, you’re a stinkIng overpaid ‘actor’! You’re an actor! Nothing more. These people who get paid millions to play act. They think they’re the center of the universe. But most pf them are dysfunctional morons who didn’t finish high school. Suck it Batman!
This just goes to my opinion about celebrities in general, they aren’t worth a shit since they seem to think their crap doesn’t stink. I watch their shows because they are entertainers and a short time ago they were plying their trade for scraps but I don’t give them a shred of credibility more than I do anyone else out there. They may think that because they have large bank accounts that they have an opinion that matters but more often then not they shoulod just take their cash and go spend it somewhere because I don’t give rip what the think.
It actually sounds like Bale is the only one attempting to maintain some standard of professionalism. I mean sure, most of you have issue with your parents, who have issues with their parents, and so you get sensitive when you hear someone yelling and automatically want to make them the bad guy. But the fact is Christian Bale is a world class actor, and he didn’t get there by half assing. Why would the DP just be walking into shots? Bale is right about this being the same as if he just started ripping down the lights. It ruins the scene he spent untold hours memorizing and preparing himself for. I’m sure most of you would flip out in the same way, if the guy you work with took all the Happy Meal toys you just restocked, or served the last french fries without dropping a new basket.
And then there’s McG, another adult child just trying to make nice, instead of accepting any accountability for the fact that his nitwit DP is submarining the project. You have to understand that Hollywood is full of hangers on, friends of friends, and people whose reputations far exceed their quality of character. Christian Bale, a world class actor, making an earnest effort at giving his best, is right to be pissed about that effort being for naught, just to indulge some knucklehead whose actions are utterly unprofessional and incomprenensible given the situation.
Wouldn’t Michael Phelps be allowed to be pissed if a week before the Olympics someone jumps on him off the high dive while he is swimming laps? What if some clown dumps a drum of oil on the track while Dale Jr is running laps at 160mph? How about if someone tied Roethlisberger’s shoes together right before the last drive of the Super Bowl? You know, just because…? Yet this guy walks right through a scene mid shot TWICE! Every bit as stupid and aggravating.
I think it is commendible that a guy who could A) never work again and be fine, or B) could get by on his reputation and half-ass everything, still holds everyone he works with to some standard of professionalism. And it shows you everything you need to know that WB leaked this tape to make him look like the bad guy. Way to submarine the best thing you have going for you. What will the WB do when Bale honors his pledge and never works with them again? Replace him with Damon Wayans. Hilarious.
Blows my mind how many people cannot find a job right now and a spoiled actor being paid MILLIONS acts like this.
In my opinion, is he the first actor to go off on the set?
I agree with his complaint, but not his response.
Thank God, he’s not a American Psycho.
This was pretty damn funny. Yes, he lost control. Of course he shouldn’t have exploded. The big difference is that most of us are not in a position of power where our job is safe regardless of how we talk to our co-workers.
For the folks that get upset about this: You’re doing it wrong. Besides, it’s not our place to judge, especially in this situation. Context is the key and we simply don’t have that (nor should we).
Unless you’ve never had the privilege of working with/for the foolish (humans), speaking in anger and frustration is something _all_ of us are guilty of. For most, it’s embarrassing and few of us look back at an outburst like that and say that the situation couldn’t have been improved. To have the episode recorded and spread publicly is the real problem here… not to mention PR genius.
Despite this, he did _not_ threaten to quit the production if the DP isn’t fired as the Nikki suggests. He threatened to walk if it happens _again_. As of the time of the rant, per Christian, the behavior had already happened twice.
I’ll bet the DP didn’t ruin another scene after that exchange. Glad to hear they worked it out eventually
My take as an industry outsider:
1. The outburst was inappropriate. Bale was completely lost his cool, blew his stack, whatever you want to call it. He was incorrigible and relentless in his rage, which is not any way for an adult to behave. Nobody in their right mind would say that such behavior is tolerable on a day-to-day basis. It creates a hostile work environment. The thing is, I’m sure Bale would agree and in this case he just couldn’t hold back any longer.
2. The outburst was provoked. It’s clear from the nature of Bale’s rant that the DP in question had committed the offense multiple times and a straw had finally broke the camel’s back. From some of the more informed comments on this site I have gathered that it is proper for a DP to wait for an appropriate time to make adjustments, rather than fooling about causing a distraction while actors are doing their job.
3. The outburst was business as usual. Emotions flare often in the professional world, because you have a collection of experts and people who have devoted their lives to a certain thing. In the world of Law Enforcement, for example, the F-bombs fly freely and if you screw up it’s not uncommon for more senior officers and supervisors to haul off on you verbally, even if there is a much better way of handling the issue. Take comfort from this, knowing that it’s often out of a concern that a job be done properly rather than poorly.
One more thing. It’s easy for the public to be offended when somebody starts dropping the F-bomb and yelling at people, taking some sort of moral high road in an attempt, possibly motivated by envy, to belittle people in their own minds. But who doesn’t use the word themselves, honestly, and who doesn’t get mad and yell at people occasionally? It’s vulgar, course, and offensive conversation that people should avoid, yes. But is it some huge moral outrage? No.
My advice to Christian: take the high road with conflict and deal with problems coolly and calmly. It will earn you respect, solve the problems more efficiently, and reduce your own stress level.
Good for him. Don’t take bullshit from anyone!
Wow! Good thing Bruce wasn’t a girl, CB might have really lost it and slapped the guy around.
Ok, so Christian Bale has a bad temper. Many of us do. What the media doesn’t tell is how long had Christian Bale been working on this scene before Hurlbut messed the whole thing up by being careless. Was Bale fatigued and perhaps sleep deprived? I can understand Christian’s frustration. Yes, he could have handled it better. Hind sight is always twenty twenty. He yelled at the guy and understandably so. But the media is doing it’s best to create a linch mob to go after Mr. Bale. There’s two sides to every story folks.
Anyone with any dignity or self-respect would not be talked to this way. I have worked many blue collar and white collar jobs, and have never been tongue lashed in this manner. And I would clean the clock (or at least attempt to) of anyone who spoke to me like this….damn the consequences. I won’t tolerate rude behavior. Bale is an a$$hole.
Yep. All the Bale bashers have no concept of what it’s like as an actor when the pressure is on to give a performance and someone keeps f-ing up takes. When cameras are rolling there is NO SOUND and NO MOVEMENT! Period! Also, late in the tirade he says, “You’re a nice guy, you’re a nice guy, but….” Why would he take the time to say that when he didn’t have to? It’s a sign of him not liking the fact that he has to rip someone a new asshole, but felt no other option. And to grey Stone…if you are such a proponent of Teachers, Nurses, and Military…what are you doing trolling an Entertainment Web Site? There are worse ass chewings than this every day in the military you moron. Sounds to me like you weren’t worshiped in High School and resented it and the cool crowd as well. And, ‘Anyone can Act’? Give me a break. You are clueless.
I`ll stick up for the DP, I`ll fight you Bale you fucken pussy.
Brad, you obviously don’t work in the film business. It’s not alright to chew someone out like that. The guy works there because his livelihood depends on it and to pay his bills. There’s a reason he didn’t join the military…
He wouldn’t have talked to anyone like that if James Cameron were involved with this crappy project. “F You” C-Bale, you spoiled wanker!!!!
You don’t get where Christian Bale is without a bit of ego in play. All that churning, roiling intensity makes him absolutely delectable on-screen. I’m sorry if that makes him an unhappy person, but I do so enjoy watching him act. And frankly, compared to some of the mega-star fits I’ve heard of from friends in the industry, this one doesn’t sound so bad. What Christian was railing against was something legitimate, actually, though it may more graciously have been said.
Sounds like Bale is under tremendous pressure and on the verge of a breakdown.
chuck
i think bale is in the right. you can’t have someone messing up the scene. enough being nice and not worrying about hurting anyone’s feelings. they’re all there to make a movie and bale is by far the most important part. some people need a serious verbal lashing before they get that they need to step up their game, some just need to be fired. this guy was continually making the same mistake, messing with the lights and disturbing bale.
So what, who cares. Ninety percent of the set is totally psycho anyways. Hardly organized chaos. I’ve seen stars bossing the ‘oscar’ director around like a bath house boy. Not the life for me, I left for something stable…..the Airlines.
Go figure, another Actor/Actress Premadonna. Just quit caring what they do. Don’t pay to see their stupid films. Quit subscribing to “US” or “People”, quit checking out TMZ online. Why are we so fascinated by these people? They’re assholes.
Another thing…for those of you that keep saying that that kind of language is just the ‘way it is’ in the ‘real world’ listen up. The only reason it has become that way is because too many people are too spineless to stand up and say “NO IT IS NOT OK”. Apathy just leads the majority down the primrose path to acceptance. Why can’t you accept the fact that a world in which people speak and act respectfully to one another may just well be a better place? Wait a minute, instead of that, lets scream about global warming, go save some whales, and recycle..thats what will make our world better!! Riiiiiiight…
CHRIS BALE IS ONE ANGRY DICK.
OR A MAN WHO’S INCREDIBLY SICK.
A DIRECTORIAL WUSSY,
MCG’S A MCPUSSY.
HOLY ASSHOLE! THE DARK KNIGHT’S A PRICK!
The “man” is clearly unworthy of his first name.
I care about as much this as do about which canidate a hollywood moron talks about…I don’t
Nikki got linked on Drudge again, right? I can’t believe so many people commenting on this thread who obviously have no idea of what goes on on a live set.
Why in the world do these folks get paid so much. Somthing is really wrong with this picture.
patric
All I can say is after listening to the tape, the people here who are siding with the DP obviously don’t know the first thing about a film set, the kind of hours people pull, and the kind of money that gets wasted when morons like this DP can’t get their shit together. Bale was 100% in the right. As a producer if this guy was on my set, I’d have let him go as Bale was demanding.
It was fucked up, i was there, there’s no reason for a grown man to talk to another man like that, and threaten to hit him also, you people defending him, if someone threaten to kick ur as, you would think different, there’s no, fuck that, would have been christain pack a lunch, gonna be a long day,
To all the Bale apologists who keep citing the special nature of a film set: I worked in live television for years, I produced hundreds of hours on sometimes very stressful terms, and it doesn’t sound like Bale (or anyone with his psyche) could last five minutes in that environment. In that situation, talent doesn’t get time-outs to vent, and abuse people, and have their egos serviced. We are on — NOW. Being a pro, and getting paid like one, means you deal with it.
Some of you may love Bale, but I think he’s garbage wrapped in skin.
Obviously he is intent on living up to his namesake.
I know the guy’s name is McG… but do people really call him that? Ay yi yi…
I am struck by the duplicitous nature of Hollywood. The business is run like a business. You screw up, and you get called out for it. Then everyone gets in a Prius and pretends to be a government social worker.
Everyone should listen to this recording and take note. In the real world, you need to do your job well to get a check. It is a competitive world. If the Hollywood left would spread that message we would all be better off.
Let me add that movie to the list that I will NOT be going to see. Who does this guy think he is? There’s no excuse for that type of behavior by ANYONE…important or not.
I don’t care what anyone says, but that has to be the funniest audio clip I’ve heard in years. Classic! I was always a Bale fan but this moves him to the top of my list! It’s about time we call incompetence what it is, instead of rewarding it!
Yes, we weren’t there. No, we don’t know the ‘other half’ of the story. But we can hear, from the tape, that CB is the only one ranting, while others on the tape are just trying to calm him down.
-And that type of ranting? That’s not ‘normal’ everyday behavior on a shoot.
I’m an actor. I’ve worked as an extra at least two dozen times on those 18 hour shoots.
By no means does that make me Christian Bale, or any other lead actor. But you spend a lot of time as an extra watching what goes on, for hours on end.
Working on films, I’ve only seen one person ‘go off’ on another person. It was an electrician on one of the smallest films I’d ever worked on. He yelled at an extra for stepping on a wire for 3 minutes. He, too, was unprofessional.
I’ve also been singled out for ‘insert’ shots where the camera was on me, just 18 inches away, and I had to ignore everyone else in the room. I know how hard it is to put those things out of your head.
But that’s part of your job… to ignore all of that stuff around you… the camera, the lights, and the guy shaking fake snow onto your head.
If you can’t ignore those things, the answer is to tell the director that someone keeps going into your sightline. The answer isn’t to go to that person and throw a power trip.
I’ve never had a ‘normal’ job where someone feels the need to berate someone like that. Its not acceptable.
Maybe for Gordon Ramsey. But then again, those people signed up for that.
I totally understand having a melt-down when you’re frustrated but Christian’s tantrum goes on and on and on. Evidently, he has NEVER made one mistake in his entire professional career. If he had, he would realize how humilating it would feel to be publicly beraded, to this extreme extent, and vow to never treat anyone with such disrespect. Christian may be a good actor, but he is not a very nice person. Sad.
Filming a major picture is a high stakes game. From the audio it is clear that there had been other conversations about the DP walking around the set when a scene is being filmed. The actor is upset because it had happened many times before. His future value as an actor is going to based on the success or failure of the film he is working on, so the DPs actions could indirectly impact the actors future value. I would be upset too and I think the actor is justified to rage like that because clearly all the other efforts to fix the problem have not worked.
ultimately the blame is on the director and onsite producer for letting the whole situation get to this point. The producer should be the one going off as it is their money that is being wasted by the DP F’ing around on set. he ought to pull the director aside and inform him to get his shit together.
I don’t care how many days or weeks Bale was deprived of sleep or was trying to get the scene right. Bale verbally abused and threatened the DP. There is no reason to act like that under ANY circumstance. I would say, “What a spoiled brat” but that doesn’t begin to cover it. He has some serious issues going on in his head. Joe and PostGirl (at the beginning of the comments) go out of their way to apologize for and justify or rationalize Bale’s atrocious behaviour. The only thing that could excuse that outburst was if they were making a movie within a movie of how a stressed and spoiled hollywood “star” acts like the self-centered brat that he is.
Publicity, publicity, we got publicity for our cruddy little Terminator film. Thank you Christian, everyone bought it, hook, line, and sinker. What a bunch of suckers.
Sounds like someone needs to call a “wahbulance” for Bale. It just goes to illustrate what a bunch of spoiled, vapid, and insolent bunch we have in Hollywood today. You would have never caught John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Robert Michum, etc, acting like such a spoiled brat. Oh and Bruce needs to grow a pair.. if ANY man in the world addressed me in such a vile and vulgar manner, he would have been carried off of his precious set by life-flight or in a hearse!!
I think Christian was absolutely right also. I am a producer and an actress so I know how it works. Christian respects the DP and lets him light, then the DP has to respect Christian and let him act. it’s the same thing. What the DP did was very unprofessional. If the scene is not lit properly, you keep shooting, until the director calls cut, no matter what. So it was also disrespectful to the director. It may have been the best take for Christian and there has to be a give and take between technical and artistic or none of it works. I am also upset that the sound guy dared to keep this and use it to make a buck-or gave it to someone who would, very unprofessional also.
And in Christian’s defense, I have worked with a lot of actors who have attitudes for no reason. This was not one of those actors, or times. Plus, we all work 12-18 hours 6-7 days a week on little or no sleep and everyone knows when you are sleep deprived you reaction is often going to be affected.
In an interview with E! Online, assistant director and producer of Terminator: Salvation Bruce Franklin said it was an isolated incident. In the interview, Franklin said:
“If you are working in a very intense scene and someone takes you out of your groove…It was the most emotional scene in the movie,” said Franklin. “And for him to get stopped in the middle of it. He is very intensely involved in his character. He didn’t walk around like that all day long. It was just a moment and it passed.”
Some of you have led some pampered lives…I suggest you harden the fuck up.
He’s a committed, serious actor. He probably had a point. And maybe the DP will pay attention next time.
I don’t care who he is or who he wishes he were. I work in show business (20 years in rock ‘n roll). If that asshole spoke to me like that I would have punched him straight in the mouth. Movie star or not. Nobody, and I MEAN NOBODY, has the right to speak to a co-worker like that ever.
The dp should have whipped his ass even if he had walked through the middle of the scene accidentally.
Try that shit with me Batman and I’ll smash your friggin’ lights out!
While I believe there is a tale of two tapes, Christian went over board. There is no excuse for the continued bashing. Nobody should ever be threatened because somebody is having a fit. If this was a problem with the DP guy, Christian should have said something to the director and let him deal with it. These celebrities are pampered way to much. The Oh I know your a nice guy is translated into I being an a$$ and want to make you feel a little better, But since I started being an a$$, I will continue. What a baby.
what’s the problem? it is reasonable for Bale to expect a level of professional and considerate behavior from those working around him. I’m sure his point has not been forgotten. success does not disallow him from reacting verbally to inappropriate behavior.
“we’re through professionally”
perfect line from Bale and can think of a few people I would have enjoyed saying that to
This guy has become a prima donna. That kind of behavior is never excusable—especially in the acting profession—he totally lacks discipline. If you’re a policeman, a firefighter or someone with REAL pressure on the job maybe just maybe I can give someone a pass. But an actor? He lost control. Pure and simple. He is risking becoming another Russell Crowe. If you lose the public’s admiration you become box office poison. He better be careful. As a society, we are sinking to the lowest common denominator. I’m sick of apologists for what is obviously bad behavior.
prima donna |ˌprimə ˈdänə; ˌprēmə|
• a very temperamental person with an inflated view of their own talent or importance.
Thank God hero pilot Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger didn’t lose his cool when he realized that his plane was going down. That’s what I call a professional.

So this begs the question, Did the DP get fired? No, I’m sure everyone just (mentally if not literally) rolled their eyes, waited for the tirade to be over and then went back to work. Another day at the office.
So where was McG during this, hey WB, how about hiring a director who knows what to do on a set?
I hope his this movie TANKS! this jerk deserves no better. I would have jacked slapped that english punk right in the head. No body deserves to be spoken to in that way! and if they did then there ass should be kicked. I will NOT support this english bastered ever again, I will pass this along to everyone I know and after they hear this ASS, they will agree with me. His movie career is DUMMED! good for him!And anyone that tries and give excuses for this Jerk is an ASS also!
I hope your movie career is OVER!
Sounds to me like Bale is busting the DP for simply not doing his job. He’s right, it’s not easy to act convincingly in a scifi style film let alone when someone is distracting you. On set you stay where you are for the duration of the scene… that’s how filming works. If the DP is moving around in plain sight then he earned what he got.
Quote—”If he’d would talked like that to me, I would’ve kicked his ASS!!!” And then signed by “annonymous.”
Internet balls. Sorry, but that is the funniest thing on this post.
Typical arrogant celebrity…Bale is an arrogant dickhole that needs his teeth kicked down his throat. Maybe then he’ll learn to treat those around him with respect.
Bale needs time alone with someone who will fix his problem.
ANYONE who is saying Bale was WAY out of line on this one knows NOTHING about film making. Period.
This is how actors are, especially WHEN they know they’re irreplaceable, and while there’s no reason people should cheer and applaud Bale, if you’ve been on set, and you understand how set works, then you understand the DP shouldn’t have walked into a shot.
There was NO excuse. Period. If there was a problem with the lights, you tell the AD, the AD tells the director, and then a decision is made whether to stop the take or not. If no, then things are fixed on the next take.
The problem was this guy was hoping to sneak in, while the camera was probably pointed in the other direction, and fix a problem so it didn’t show up when they looked at dailies. Which is an even worse decision, as the lighting would have changed in the middle of a shot, making it useless in the first place.
Bale got really pissed – because it was the guy’s SECOND time doing it. Now, the question is – did it happen a third-time? Probably not, because Bale made sure of that.
McG should have been the one handling the situation, but I have a feeling he’s not strong enough to stand up to Bale. But Bale was totally within his rights as a pissed off guy to do this.
Sets are months of tension. You become closer to a family than co-workers the time you’re there. Arguing and yelling is no big deal. The guy’s a better DP for what happened, I promise you that.
I love the movies hollywood makes. But this is the type of people, politics, opinions, etc of the people in hollywood are made of. What a spoiled child.
And what’s with Bale’s on-again/off-again British accent? Madonna, anyone? Or is that “PRI-Madonna?”
What a prima donna!
These stupid actors thing what they do is soooo important. It doesn’t matter what the ‘emotional content’ of the scene was, all he’s doing is playing soldier. It’s just a stupid movie!
Bale yelled at the guy for being unprofessional, but a professional actor would have finished the take even with the distraction and then do it over if need be. Didn’t this clown ever act on the stage or in live performances? He’s not much of actor if he can’t work through it.
Has anyone counted the F-bombs in that tirade? Sounded a lot like Al Pacino in “Glen Garry Glen Ross.”
Classic.
Well, CB acted like an ass, but, if the guy kept messing up the shot, something should have been said, just not like this. The DP can’t fight back; in this biz, you’re expected to take verbal abuse without complaint. If you complain, even if you’re 100% right, everyone thinks you’re the bitch.I complained ONCE about racist things being said to me(I’m black)in a work situation, even though I talked to the guy about it on several occassions first, tried to work it out without taking any kind of “official” action, he laughed in my face..I took the action, it hurt him, but everyone started treating me like the “sensitive black guy” from that point forward..kind of a no-win in this town on the verbal abuse tip.. people generally tend to favor the bully, more than the person being bullied. People are hardwired to think that might makes right. I don’t respect what CB did here because he KNEW he could abuse this guy and get away with it. He could have, just as easily, corrected the guy on the spot calmly, finished the shot, then had it out with him in a private place. If it continues after that, then CB has the right to go off, because then the dude is just fucking with him on purpose. Dude needs to get a grip..
Hey man, you WERE one of my favorite actors. Now I’m just wondering when the last time you were punched really hard in the mouth. It needs to be soon. Checks and Balances buddy.
The dp should have whipped his ass even if he had walked through the middle of the scene accidentally or not.
Try that shit with me Batman and I’ll smash your friggin’ lights out!
ahh for the old days.Nothing like an old fashion as* chewing. I can’t believe this coddle me generation with these weak, mamby pamby posts. Go Chris. I’ll be the moron got it right the next time.
So many people commenting on this seem to think they have the authority to diagnose mental health issues based on a few minutes of Christian Bale swearing. Umm, I don’t think so.
I have to say it, I accept his outburst as the result of having to deal with some idiot messing up his scene. Christian Bale’s a good actor and obviously this lighting guy was being a douche. I don’t think it was Bale who was being rude, it was the guy who couldn’t sit still while people were filming a multi-million dollar movie.
Honestly, I’ve yelled like this before, after a 13 hour day when the work has to be done that night.
I’m sorry to break to a lot of people, but time IS money,
that work has to be done at a certain point, like yesterday.
I paint huge art pieces for a living, and can’t have some noob come in and start messing with the work, as the yellee evidently did.
Next time you complain about a movie budget, think of the guy that busted the scene. He messed up the take, everyone has to start allover again, thus adding a few pennies each time he does that to your ticket price.
I can’t figure out why people are going on and on about how great of an actor CB is.
Did you guys see The Dark Knight? His ridiculous deep “menacing” Batman voice was hilarious. He can’t act.
Lay off the roids man, and all those pansies saying we weren’t there “Shut the F*ck up” to quote christian. I do work in the industry and it is NOT ok to threaten to kick someones ass! Actors jobs are NOT that hard, even though they like to make it out to be, they play make believe and were make up Ooooooooh real tough. I was an actor all through school until I realized how much I hated being around there winy little butts, now I just write and edit there stuff.
I still like C.B’s movies though.
how much does bale like the f word and does he even know how to speak properly? I think not
BALE WAS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. HE IS TRYING TO DO A SCENE WELL. WORKS HARD AND IN THE MIDDLE OF HIS WORK SOME DOUCHEBAG WITH LIGHTS AND A CLEAR F ING HEAD IS WANDERING AROUND IN A COMA. DAY IN DAY OUT YOU HAVE TO WONDER THAT IF YOU DO YOUR JOB SOME DICKHEAD IS GOING TO F THINGS UP FOR YOU. ITS ABOUT TIME WE STOP WORRYING ABOUT THE SENSITIVITY OF THE DOUCHEBAG AND CALL HIM ON IT. BALE IS RIGHT. THE LIGHTING GUY SHOULD GET A JOB EATING CHEETOS IN A VIDEO STORE AND SHUT THE F UP. ANYONE PROTECTING THIS A HOLE SHOULD HIRE HIM AND PUT UP WITH HIM BEING A THOUGHTLESS LOSER. IM TIRED OF ALL THIS PUT UP WITH AN A HOLE AND BE POLITE SHIT. MY MESSAGE TO THE LIGHTING TECH IS YOU ARE PROBABLY AN OVERPAID A HOLE. SO GO GET A JOB SELLING HOTDOGS IF SO THE WORST YOU DO IS PUT MAYO ON THE HOT DOG INSTEAD OF MUSTARD. CHEERS TO BALE!!!!! AND ALL THESE DOUCHEBAGS ONLINE WHO ARE SHOCKED BY HIS BEHAVIOR WE SHOULD TAPE YOU IN YOUR HOUSE- LISTEN TO YOU LOSE IT BECAUSE SOMEONE TOOK YOUR TWINKIE IN YOUR LUNCHBOX!!
Any human being who treats another like this, particularly in the face of apologies on the part of the other person, should be a pariah and should have no place in anything that thinks of itself as a civilized society. There are many countries in the world where you would be an outcast for that kind of behavior to anyone. The more that people stand up for this and accept it, the more callous and cold we become. Bale should have been thrown off the set. No almighty dollar should trump this sort of thing. He is an ignorant spoiled little child, and anyone who has anything to do with him in life has only themselves to blame for any mistreatment they receive from him. He needs to have some respect for people who are there to assist him, understand that nobody is perfect, or go away and take his won life and leave this world a more respectable place for the rest of us.
Apparently, acting is super serious business when it comes to Christian Bale.
I always think less of people who get pissed off about a mistake someone makes and talk about how its so terrible and costing so much time and/or interrupting progress on a project for 5x the amount of time the mistake actually cost. Mistake =1/2 minute lost. Christian Bale’s self-absorbed, retarded, potty-mouth rant = at least 3:47 of time. Its too bad nobody had the balls to tell Christian to STFU, reset the take, and do the scene again like any professional would be expected to do (sans the tirade). Well then again, acting is super serious business.
Dear sam, and anyone else who isn’t an actor who gave their opinion. Your all pricks. What makes Bale so good ( and he is) is his ability to tap into deep emotions. You don’t know how long he tried to get up to a level of performance. or reach the emotional level for that scene. He is not an accountant in a high rise. Let it go. I am sure everyone else has, I am just sorry that someone felt that this needed to be aired. They should be fired.
Go back to Britain, asshole.
How in the **** did Bale ever become this “macho Hollywood action star”
in the first place?
Isn’t this the same twitty little English kid from “Empire of the Sun” (”lad-a-dog-o!!”) and “Newsies”?
And his “neutral” American accent makes him sound just like Charlie Sheen.
Just typical Hollywood intellect…
Utterly clueless. All these comments do is let me know that there is not one true film technician on this site. This, this scandalizes you? An actor having it out with a DP? A DP who is a legendary asshole by the way! Interesting that no one is writing about that. A DP who’s career came apart at its inception because of what a prick he was and most likely still is. Listen to McG try and control the situation… He sounds like the child that he is, as does Christian, as does Shane. It’s the Hollywood dream trifecta, a hodge podge of petulant, childish people, celebrated as creatives, who have no emotional control. Trust me, “Bruce”, if Mauro Fiore walked onto the AVATAR set during a rehearsal, cracking jokes with his gaffer, and swinging his light meter around, James Cameron would have been the FIRST asshole to jump down his throat. The actors would not have had a chance. Hurlbut is an amateur, period. It just took an actor who has his own demons, to point it out. There is an entire shoot’s worth of disgust and anger in CB’s voice, and that doesn’t just happen. “This is the SECOND time, man!”
And by the way, if you don’t want to get yelled at while at work, DO NOT JOIN THE FILM INDUSTRY. Stop talking about, “he shouldn’t have taken that.” That doesn’t exist. And by the way, think on your own job history. Just how much crap have each and every one of us eaten, in the name of a job? Most likely a shitty job to begin with. Now, you’re talking about being the Director of Photography on a $200 million dollar, tentpole movie, earning a minimum of $15000 a week. No one is walking away from that opportunity, no matter who screams at them. That’s called career suicide.
The DP was stupid, should have been fired.
Rant by Bale would have got my fist in his face. DP and idiot, and so is Bale.
You don’t talk to people like this in real life and not end up in trouble.
I’m so renting “Newsies” tonight.
Didn’t any of you sissy’s play any high school sports? Or ever work construction? Or ever work on a film set? I used to PA, and can’t begin to tell you how many times the Ape’s, errr, I mean grips would not listen after you tell them we are rolling, quiet please. The DP should have no known better, or at least said something before they started rolling if he was having a problem with the lights. Also, DP’s are kind of jerk offs as well. Too bad he got chewed out, but we all need a ass kicking every once in a while.
Onewolf
All of the people defending Bale ( I gather they’re actors with equal bad tempers or his agents)
should be ashamed of themselves. It doesn’t matter if the DP made a mistake during rehearsal ( this did not happen during a take, I’m sure) nobody should verbally abuse another human being like that.
All this bullshit about how he gets into his character and it’s not his fault, oh please. First of, this is not Schindler’s List, this is McG’s Terminator. So I doubt he was emotionally preparing for watching his children get killed.
Second, there are many ways to fix this kind of problem, hell, talking to the producer and asking for the DP to be replaced would have been a better choice than humiliating and abusing him like that.
Christian Bale, you are like so many actors, just a spoiled five-year-old brat in a man’s body. Shame on you.
I urge all my “above-the-line” colleagues to think twice about working with him. I will and many of my friends will too.
Disappointed.
The only thing we can be sure of from this clip is that Bale is a serial potty mouther. Too bad…
I love the bleeding hearts that can’t believe one person should talk to any other person in such a mean tone. Are you kidding me? When there are millions of dollars on the line, feelings go in the backseat, fuck that they go in the trunk.
Bale is the king of the castle when it comes to a film in which his career is tied. He could have gone monkey crazy and thrown freshly squeezed poo at the guy for screwing around on set and been justified. The reality is, one flop can kill a career. His focus is on making a quality and profitable film, so being nice and giving constructive criticism to someone who is jeopardizing that primary goal is not in the cards.
Anyone ever watch Entourage? Ari Gold? Yeah, Piven didnt just make up that character out of the clear blue sky. If you don’t have a thick skin, film-making is not a viable career path for you. Rejection and dignity shredding dress downs are par for the course.
Batman made him a star and now he is abusing it. and btw mr bale – Keaton was the best Batman by far.
I get MAJOR frustrations at work all the time – projects screwed up, big dollars at stake, people’s career’s in the balance, sleepless nights, etc. If I went off on a vulgar tirade like that – for whatever reason – someone in Hollywood would make a movie about what a jerk and exploiter I was to speak to people like that. Just because you are an actor does not give one a reason – NO MATTER THE FRUSTRATION – to speak to people like they are a dog.
the guy could have cut him down right there by standing up to him and challanging him to an on the spot drug test.
The producer could have said “if things are so professional around here let’s both take drug tests and anyone who fails is off the move for good…”
Bale would have backed down (cause he was on something for sure..)then the producer could have pressed the matter for the kill
Bale was right. I would have apologized. Then I would have thrown down with him if he continued to berate me.
I would have gladly been fired rather than take a tongue lashing from a self-important wanker like that. I’m a huge fan of Christian Bale, but he should never forget that he is an ACTOR, not exactly anyone that society depends on to produce anything meaningful.
Also, I love the fact that Bale can be mocked for considering his craft a serious profession, but when the movie comes out, if it’s anything less than an operatic crescendo of violence, he’ll be ripped to shreds for not “taking it seriously enough!” Classic…
Chris is right: rule 101 — NO WALKING DURING A TAKE. The man was working. McG should have had more control over his set. This is his fault more than Chris’.
Boy he would be great in the real business world / Imagines if his wife upsets him/Needs some serious help and I mean that form the heart and don’t give me that acting trade BS/There is stress in every job and fools trying to distract you /take a deep breath and stop a moment no matter how intense it is. It’s a movie! AT LEAST YOU CAN GET A RETAKE/ CB should play this over to himself to see how unprofessional he is and sounds. That’s what cured me in a hurry. That and my wife telling me I scared the hell out of people acting like that.
What he does not need is to told it was okay. He probably feels real foolish right now too. ( PROFESSIONALISM )
What happens when Mr. Bale flubs a line? Does the DP light into him in the same way? No way.
If you have not held a position as the lead actor, director, DP or AD on a film set, it is hard to hear the audio recording without faulting Bale. However, if you have held any of those positions…
I fault the DP and the Director. The DP for repetitive screwing around during takes and the director for not defusing the problem earlier and not stepping in when the conflict began.
Seems like McG wanted to let Bale chew out the DP on his behalf since McG obviously didn’t want to reign in the DP himself. The AD can only take cues from Director – so he’s impotent unless the Director empowers him.
There were better options for Bale such as requesting a break and talking to the director and DP alone. I don’t think Bale was throwing a childish tantrum. I do think he was firmly enforcing the right of respect for his craft while the camera is rolling. Who knows the lead up to the outburst?
For those of you who think there are no comparables to such behavior, I remind of Tiger Woods whose caddy threw a photographer’s camera into the water when a picture was taken during Tiger’s downswing. In Bale and Wood’s incidents, a well established code in that particular craft was broken by those who should have known better leading to profanity and outrage by the principals.
There will still be those who fault Woods and Bale for their anger. I can only theorize that those who do, are not at the elite levels of their profession like Woods and Bale since they cannot relate to the commitment it takes to perform at those levels and the frustration that arises from distractors who ought to know better.
you people are morons. i’d have done the same exact thing. if the idiot can’t realize that that WALKING IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA ruins a shot, then screw them. in my opinion, he must have been pushed to the limit. fuck the dp and fuck you morons who are shitting on bale.
I’m sorry, “Disappointed,” that one I cannot let go. “I urge all my ‘above-the-line’ colleagues to think twice about working with him?” You’re urging collusion? Against an A list actor? Signed to three Terminator remakes and another Batman? You’re kidding around, right? You wouldn’t actually open yourself up to that sort of recrimination, right? Over Shane Hurlbut? And, once again, the comparison about the quality of the work. “Terminator, not Schindler’s List.” Something tells me, there will not be a “Schindler’s 2″, so what the hell are you talking about? You don’t think Liam Neeson ever once cracked under the pressure of playing Oskar Schindler? And he’s a dead person! Bale is carrying a billion dollar franchise on his back, one that still has Arnold Schwarzenegger’s face on it. So you are advocating, “Disappointed” that he quietly sneak over one of Derek, Moritz, Victor, or Jeffrey (four of the Producers) and mention, “Hey why don’t we get rid of Shane. Thanks, and I’ll see you later at dailies.” Wow! Now, that’s classy, huh? That’s the epitome of being a gentleman, huh?
Yeah, the DP made a mistake. No reason for Bale to go off on him and berate him the way he did. To use the “F” word soooo many times. Give me a break! Bale needs to be fired. I would never work with him if I were a producer. You cannot treat the crew like dirt. They work hard and for mere peanuts compared to what a stupid actor makes. I will boycott all Bale films from now on. What a total loser! He needs some serious anger management classes!!!
After sifting through these posts, it’s clear that filmcan is the only one who actually understands what he’s talking about, and has it in context. This is business as usual on the set of a big picture.
Christian Bale is a pompous idiot… and everyone should BOYCOTT the film.
The abuse by this idiot should have him out of work. Christian Bale, you are FIRED!
Again, for the slow people from Drudge (and there are many evidently): CHRISTIAN BALE WAS THE ONLY PERSON WHO WAS WEARING A MICROPHONE SO OF COURSE HE’S ABOUT THE ONLY PERSON YOU CAN HEAR. You can’t hear anything else anyone is saying (like the DP who is no doubt egging him on) because they weren’t wearing microphones. Now choke on that and go back to sewing your KKK hoods.
I say lets hire Bale to “talk” to the Big 3 CEO’s.
I would pay money to see him call Chrysler sh*** A** run company.
THIS GUY CALLS IT THE WAY HE SEES IT!
Unions protect a lot of these talentless hacks that skate from movie to movie.
I like Bale a lot more after this. He seems to care and is not this PC guy just to keep his image clean for the fans.
REEL MANS MAN.
typical arrogant limey,,,
The actor’s job is vastly different from the work of other crewmembers.
The actor must be EMOTIONALLY available. After the director and all the crew (esp. the DP!) have set up the shot, the actor must then step up and lay his/her emotions bare… on cue… for the camera… while no doubt all sorts of explosions etc. are happening around him. The actor waits for an eternity until the set is ready and then he reaches deep (even in an action picture) and pulls out an emotional line reading.
And then the DP, someone who should know better and somebody who has apprently done this before – walks across the set and distracts the actor.
The actor who is primed and wearing his emotions on his sleeve.
Mr. Bale clearly needed to release his anger so he could get back to work. He did, they did. The movie opens this summer and all eyes will be on Mr. Bale’s performance.
This is the biz – powerful people scream. Maybe it ain’t right, but it is ingrained into the fabric of our daily schedule. Just make sure you are not the one being screamed at.
Anyone who has been on a production set has seen something similar to this. People get all wiggy. It’s the way the industry is, the bunch of self-serving hacks. Too bad for the DP. Not for having to take it but for not manning up and laying that dick out the first time he threatened him. If he’d have jacked him in the face like he deserved, he may have never worked film again but think of the play he’d have gotten for getting to say he was the one who knocked that prick cold out.
Christain Bale…big fucking deal. oooh! Watch out! He’s gonna gitcha! Then he’ll eat your children…
He never had the balls to be a soldier, but he’ll sure play one on TV (badly).
Grow up you putz. Get the balls to stay professional, and count your blessings. Remember you are nothing once the power goes out.
I cant believe that DP just sat there and took it and tried to be apologetic. I would have said, “sorry dude SH*T happens. Now get back out there and act you dumb F**KING monkey.”
I wouldnt take that crap from anyone, much less some hollywood crybaby actor.
Christian Bale DANCE MIX…pretty funny!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTihsJQHt48
See, now I want Terminator 4 to make mad box office just to piss off all of the self-righteous assholes in this comment thread. So a 3 minute outburst should get you shunned from society, all of your movies boycotted, your reputation completely destroyed and all of the other harsh judgments being passed down by the council of self-important pricks on this site?
The only outrage here is that this was leaked, especially 6 months later for no other purpose than to tarnish the reputation of one of Hollywood’s better actors (yes, CB is very talented. watch all of his movies). Even if this is a hoax or a PR stunt, all of your self-righteous rage should be directed at WB for letting this get out. I can understand if Bale never wanted to work with them again.
Christian Bale is off my watch list. The guy is simply an arrogant asshole. Like several other posters have commented, you don’t talk to people like this. The guy made a mistake. Bale gets paid big bucks for doing his job. I guess the money he gets causes him to think he is something special. He’s not. He is just another actor.
Too bad there is not a way to taech him a little respect…Like a boycott bale movement.
Sounds to me like another star with drug problems which would explain his rage.
Boo Hoo Christian…Loser..Go home. who needs you
i’ve read most of the comments. interesting how those who hate Bale are abusive in their comments. how hypocritical!
i think it comes down to how “perfectionistic” you are. if you don’t care about your work and least of all are not obsessive about it – you don’t get Bale. you think he is a dick, a schmuck…you are probably an also-ran.
note for the most ruthless perfectionist: don’t care, don’t instruct, don’t attempt to talk to someone that will only become argumentative and cannot be instructed. Quitely, discreetly have the person removed, fired without allowing the sheep to bay and moan (as they are doing on these comments).
abusive? you will never understand the heart and mind of someone that seeks to do something great and that’s what motivated his unrestrained behavior.
it could be worse for someone. Bale could say nothing and quietly destroy. or maybe he does not have the power. someone does…and they are not saying anything as they slowly make your life more difficult and you have no idea. such is the nature of power and absolute power.
This is typical of the spoiled, arrogant and childish behavior that Hollywood condones in its actors. He will never be an American in my book and he can take his juvenile behavior back to England.
No one should be spoken to like that? Grow up.
I could name at least 434 people.
This is what’s WRONG with America — people SHOULD talk like this to certain people. People are too scared to say the truth — oh well you gotta be fair/nice/socialist to everyone.
The most unfair thing to do is treat everyone the same because they aren’t! And idiots, especially American idiots, need to be talked like this sometimes and perhaps b***h-slapped back into reality.
This s**t wouldn’t fly in Deadwood.
The worse thing than harsh words is TAPING SOMEONE WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION AND SENDING IT TO LAWYERS AS POTENTIAL BLACKMAIL. Bale didn’t violate anyone’s natural rights. If the DP can’t handle the real world, boo-f**king-hoo.
I can’t believe anyone would defend this menacing rant. Didn’t you hear him start to physicallly threaten the guy? It sounds like someone was holding him back.
This was way over the top and – for those of you who have never had therapy — Bale was “acting out.”
To go on for FOUR MINUTES like that is abusive and out of control. Sorry, my husband is a prop guy who’s worked with all the big stars and this is NOT NORMAL.
That kind of verbal abuse anywhere else would get someone fired. Even CEO’s can’t get away with that. And why ON EARTH was the entire cast enabling this childish tantrum ? Why didn’t director stand up and take control?
Listening to Bale(who has a deep undertow of emotional pain in his voice) was like listening to a very disturbed two year old at a party whose tantrums spiral out of control and everyone’s afraid to do anything.
Can’t anyone in Hollywood stand up to this jerk?
To the person who said he’s “risking becoming another Russell Crowe.”
No: Christian Bale is WORSE than Russell Crowe.
the pussies in the discussion are the children who say “no human being should be talked to like that”. Grow up. The director should have been the one yelling at the dp, but if Christian had to do the job so be it.
This type of language is the way alot of men talk to each other. It is not meant to be personal, but it is intended to get the point across.
This discussion group make me wonder if our society can prevail when men can’t express themselves like men.
This should be a non-story. There are workers all across america being berated by their bosses. In this case, it sounds like the DP messed up and should take a little heat. His actions caused the entire process to grind to a hault.
Someone wrote: “Also, I like the military comment as that is totally true! Most of the people in this country (U.S.A.) would rather reduce a drill sergeant to a creampuff cheerleader as opposed to preparing a soldier for combat! Grow a pair of balls and try to act like men for a change instead of crying about someone going on a tirade and using the “f” word.”
———————————–
Again, Bale is not a military commander, and the comparison is absolutely disgraceful. He the equivalent of a medieval court jester juggling for us as we sit on our fat butts and eat popcorn. I don’t care if the guy works 20 hour days, it’s still easier than one hour doing what I do. Moreover, cursing was once punished in the military, and were those soldiers (the Revolutionary War) a bunch of “pansies” or General George Washington for making that a rule? You folks are corrupt in your morals, and have no historical perspective – truly the sad product of liberal run State schools which have dumbed down your mind and your soul to the least common denominator. God help us.
Man, this screams of finding a way to get people to talk about Bale and Terminator…
why did this even make the news? We’ve all had shouting fits before… this is just tension caused by probably a long day on the job, and then something goes wrong and someone steams…
this isn’t news worthy. this happens all the time.
Who do so called actors like Christian Bale think they are?Getting paid for play acting, something we do for free when we are little children. But idiots like him think it puts them above the rest of mankind. He wants to remember what better actors than he will ever be said about acting. IT BEATS WORKING.
He needs to get over himself and stop believing his own damn press! Bale was the prick!
Is “f***” the only word he knows?
Christian Bale rules… if someone screws up then they should be reprimanded. I would expect the same and do the same. Fuck PC and everyone being so nicey nicey. Say it how it is folks.
I don’t care WHAT the DP did, if CB claims to be SO professional, he should have spoken to the Director or AD when it happened the first time….it should NEVER come to this, this is the absolute worst case of unprofessionality….maybe my $10bucks won’t affect his millions but I for one will NOT see that movie until it’s on for free on TV…and I’ll be content that he does not have my money….I’ll go and rent the old one and enjoy it as much as I did the year it came out…..screw him for talking to another American like that, if I had my way i’d send his ass back to the UK with my foot up his *bum*.
Do you bleeding hearts have any comprehension the concentration it takes to do a scene in character?
It is tough enough without some brain dead family member walling around the set after action was called.
So Bale lost his temper! Big Deal, some people need to be told that there heads are up their ass. Self absorbed
cretin. why don’t you other self indulgent baby’s stop whining! and stick your conservative hate where the sun don’t shine!
Proof that actors are self-absorbed jerks? Shocking. Simply shocking…
He needs Jesus… plain and simple.
CB’s behavior just revealed his character as below the norm. His lack of emotional restraint is proof his body matured but not his mind. Doesn’t matter what lead to his outburst or the circumstance that lead to all this tantrum. One’s maturity is always measured by their emotional disipline and patience, which is the by-product of CHARACTER. In which CB obviously is grossly lacking. Wealth and stardom destroys this concept of …”I don’t need you and I can do it alone without having to rely on anybody.” And once you’re there, it’s the beginning of the end. Modest, humble, and sacrifice are the only virtue that could redeem him now. Good luck CB, it’ll be a long journey down the hill.
Bale gets remixed so now you can dance to him.
http://www.wwtdd.com/post.phtml?pk=18511
Would somebody hug this guy already!
This was the Terminator, not Little Women!! He was obviously in the middle of an intense scene and this DP guy kept distracting him by walking behind the other actor right in his line of vision, multiple times. He’s just keeping his intensity and in the middle of an intense scene he didn’t want to take a break to keep it. This poor guy guy got right into his Bale’s of fire.
Of course F***, or some derivitive thereof is the only adjective he could come up with. He was on his own with no script and no one was telling him what to say. Some of the dumbest sounding people I have ever heard are actors speaking on their own behalf. Much like our current President without teleprompters at the ready. Same thing.
“Mcg is a puss”
You are spot on dude. Where was/What was the AD doing at this time? Crawled up in a corner scared? Or over at crafty stuffing his hole. The director & scripty probably had their faces in the monitor, so they didn’t see what the DP was doing, and only heard CB losing his head afterward.
@Dump Christain & Anonymous
I’m sure the other poster up above who served (69 thur 72…wow Old Army) and myself (84 thru 88 US Army,) will agree with me, during basic and AIT (please take note, only during Basic & AIT–TRAINING!)we were called EVERYTHING BUT A CHILD OF GOD UNDER THE SUN! After that, wherever we were stationed, we were Professionals in what ever job we did, and DID NOT tolerate that behavior. It brought down the moral of the other soldiers working with you. At least when I was in, the drills couldn’t “touch/lay hands” (old army, you KNOW what I’m talking bout!) on us, but scream/curse us like there was no tomorrow.
Like I said, this stunt CB did KILLS moral on set! And yes, it screwing SHOWS on the final product in the end. Terminator Salvation??!! My guess was there had to be about 3 cameras (two 24p, one 36p or just digital), A zillion extras, and about 150/200 crew at a time, all kinds of stuff/shit everywhere…why is this fool losing it. A real actors gig (whether it be “Method” or whatever tool you use that gets you there) is to be AUTHENTIC within an imaginary situation/sequence. If he CAN’T nail his scene with all that around him, if some one in his peripheral is futzing with something and THAT throws “a professional actor” off his concentration…and he has to filp out like this over it (in 3-4 different accents), he is what the majority of post have said here…
A fucking tool, baby, hack, __________ (fill in the blank).
Like I said, a coffee can with his name stuck on with scotch tape on a US Airways flight back across the pond to wherever he came from. What’s inside will be what is left of him after I done.
Note: I got 20 years in the business– as an actor, recording artist and now producer. 2 degrees from USC. As my mother always told me, Treat people the way YOU want to be treated.
@ Clayton..
“Starfuckers”, You are so spot on dude!
Hey All,
Can anyone hear recall the last time he ripped someone a new asshole on set? Question is did the DP deserve it? Having been in production on stage, tv, and film I would have to say that the only time this is ever seen is when someone doe ssomething that is a show of how unprofessional they are. When the word ACTION is said nobody f-kn moves except the actors, or the camera if it involves it. Did he crss the line? Yeah, was it justified? Any DP worth his/her salt knows better than to walk-on a hot set during a performance. It’s like walking on stage during a performance to fix a prop.
Bloodly stupid choice by an otherwise talented DP.
Who is in charge? Is Christian Bale the director or producer? If not, he should be told to shut up or get out. Bale is replaceable. I’ve heard his name, but I couldn’t tell you a movie he’s been in. He’s not a Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson, George Clooney, Matt Damon, etc. You get the point. He’s a run of the mill actor and should have been put in his place. Whoever the director is, he or she needs a set of balls so that the actor does not dictate the production of a film. I think he mad his point about 20 seconds into his tirade. After that, he just shows what kind of a person he is.
If people talk to you like that and you take it, they will continue to do it. The DP was should of gotten right back in his face. He would of lost his job but gain some dignity! This is what happens when actors receive ridiculous amounts of money. I think after we go after CEO pay on Wall St., we should look into Actors and professional athletes salaries. Does any one person deserve 20 million for acting?! Maybe if these rich bastards did have their asses kissed so much they would behave like human beings.
Those who defend Bale: eat shit f*$$!!er!
I bet you liked that.
This is simply not how you treat fellow professionals. If the shot was rolling, true, the set should have been cleared no matter what. However, mistakes happen. It will make people angry (usually the director, if he’s running the set like he should be). Or the producer, if the producer is worth his salt. It is NOT ok for the actor to run amok the set which is why this is rather odd.
I’m glad this behavior has been show cased. Celebrities get WAY too much special treatment–pay, attention etc. It’s pathetic.
Let’s pull back the curtain and see them for who they really are. Particularly when they are bad people.
And please. Don’t say he was just trying to be professional. This ain’t brain surgery people. It’s a HUGE movie set with hundreds of people running around. Mistakes happen. And that’s not ok, but it is NOT a good reason to be emotionally and very nearly physically abusive. It’s not only not respectful, the threats made here are against the law.
First of all Christian Bale is no actor, he just wishes he was. He is a nobody who wishes he could act. Now if that was Marlon Brando or Paul Newman than that might make you think they were jerks. But Bale is a jerk anyway so what every comes out of his stupid mouth doesn’t surprise me.
Was he talking to McG when he said, “Seriously man, you and me, we’re fucking done professionally.” That’s not good for McG’s rep, I don’t think.
There’s a pecking order on every set. It doesn’t sound like McG, the director, had control of his set, which obviously reflects negatively on him. If the DP was indeed being a distraction, then McG should have been aware of it, and pulled the DP aside and had a chat with him – especially considering that this was the second time he did it, according to Bale’s rant anyway.
But that aside, McG should have done much more to assert himself, instead of allowing Bale to continue on for as long as he did. That kind of behavior could be very disruptive on any set.
Obviously, Bale is the STAR (caps intended). But, again, if the director had full control of his set, this kind of shit wouldn’t happen. Imagine if this was a veteran director behind the camera; I know disagreements occur on sets all the time, but, I doubt that this particular scene happens on a Soderbergh set; or a Clint Eastwood set; or a Coen Brothers set; or a Scorcese set; or a Spielberg set; etc, etc, etc…
So, I blame McG for the entire thing.
I think he should of had the shit kicked out of him personally. I dont care what happened or what time it may or may not of been who in the hell is he to talk to someone like that? Hes not even that great of an actor or that well known. He is an ass and its a shame he wasnt kicked off the set himself
Labor Department’s definition of a workplace bully:
A September 2007 Zogby survey found 37 percent of Americans workers have been bullied at work. The precise definition of a bully is tough to come by, but Washington state’s Department of Labor says it’s behavior that “intimidates, degrades, offends, or humiliates a worker, often in front of others. Bullying behavior creates feelings of defenselessness in the target and undermines an individual’s right to dignity at work.”
Bale is the archetype of a work place bully. What’s scary is that he threatened him physically.
Wow! That cameraman was a real f*%%head. He F@&$ing deserved every f@*$ing word Mr. Bale said.
People get talked to that way every day in the corporate world, sports world and military world.. As scary and obusive as it was, it motivates.. No way that guy screws up again.. And more importantly, no way the rest of the crew screws up either.. Managers often lead by using fear of humiliation.. It’s a time-tested method..
Jackson says: “This discussion group make me wonder if our society can prevail when men can’t express themselves like men. This should be a non-story. There are workers all across america being berated by their bosses…”
Real men have the discipline and self-image to express themselves without verbally raping someone else. Workers being “berated” like this all over America??? There would be billions in lawsuits if that were common in most workplaces.
What a fantasy world many of these commentors live in. Not impressed at all.
Bale will be receiving a lot of money from this incident…lawsuit, lawsuit, lawsuit all over it.
What a first class Jerk!
personally i do not think that christian bale did anything wrong. its real easy for people to say “oh he over reacted” or “that is so unprofessional” but when it comes down to it this is his job and his craft and if some dolt messes up his work then he should unload just like the rest of us. this self ritiousness that fans and so on have that judges these people in their most normal moments. anyone who says that they have not gone off on someone at work for messing something up and causing more work is either lying, unemployed or you are always the person at the receiving end of such anger. everyone wants these actors to be more like the rest of us and when they are they are torn apart. shame on anyone who puts christian bale down for this. i for one am more of a christian bale fan now than i have ever been.
Oh my, the pearl clutchers are in a tizzy over something that happens every day of the week at businesses the world over. Will there be more of the same histrionics when these people suddenly realize that some people don’t pay their parking tickets? Bale’s rant wouldn’t be out of place at most people’s Christmas get togethers so get over it, crybabies.
He sounds like and looks like a man-child. I would kick his ass so hard his grandchildren would be dizzy. What a wimp.
Wow, the funniest thing I think is all the people talking about how crew is not supposed to interrupt an actor in an “intense” scene. They are making a 4th Terminator movie. How intense can any of the scenes be for the actor?? It’s not high drama. What a prima dona. He has lost my respect.
He should have used his Batman voice, hahaha. Seriously though, things like this happen, it was probably at the end of a very long day and I am sure everyone involved may have been getting testy with each other. Sure there was a lack of professionalism here but the real professionialism can be displayed by both Bale and the DP if they made a quality product in Terminator.
It just shows that this guy is way out of control, and immature. And NO I don’t talk like CB when someone cuts me off in a car, nor do I talk like this to coworkers or my wife etc. To try and justify this by the “stressful Hollywood environment” is just absurd on so may levels, and only a fellow abuser would make excuses for it… and you need help as well.
McG is such a pussy he ought to be forced to wear a dress whenever he next manages to flirt his way onto a set. A real director would have nipped this in the bud immediately. And they certainly would sit back and watch someone slimeball prick make a few bucks selling an audio that attempts to destroy his leading man’s reputation. McG’s silence is deafening actually.
The Director should have told him to shut the fuck up or get off the fucking set. And if he continiued his shit, as the Director, I would end shooting for that day. I would never let a talent go off on any of my crew in that fashion – for whatever reason. Someone needed to remind him that just because he sucked so bad as Batman – time to move on.
What…a…complete…dick.
Personally, I would have kicked his ass if he’d have talked like that to me. And it would have been worth going to jail over it, too! The Wolf don’t play dat!!
I look forward to seeing Christian Bale on “Where are they now”. I for one will not go and see one of his films. I hate to see or hear a person being berated like that.
Take a look at the DP’s filmography, it’s fairly extensive. Not as long as Bale’s, but he certainly isn’t an amateur. Ego is an inherent aspect of any actor’s character; but humility goes a long way. IMO, Bale is full of himself and after this, at the very least, he’ll be known as a difficult actor.
With many actors, one of the things that makes them so great is their ability to portray a prick or a bitch on screen, and have the reputation of being very personable off screen. Bale seems to have it backwards.
That in itself makes it harder for me to watch any of his performances.
Joe @ 6:16
Yup, that justifies it alright.
There is no reason for that kind of outburst except for an over inflated ego. But hey, I’m not in the movie business, I just watch them.
And assholes like that are the reason I watch fewer and fewer of them
I’m not prude. I’ve heard that language plenty of times. But he has shown me that deep down he is a real prick. If he stars in another Batman movie, I will refuse to watch it. Have Izzy Izzard play the role….
American pyshco…
This guy Bale needs to have his arse kicked. OK, complain is one thing…. but geez, he’s a male prima donna and he’s not that good of an actor either.
Maybe he and Kim Kardashian should hook up.
The public has no clue as to the movie business, this is nothing new!!! This has been going on since film begain. Remember his specah for Obama?????? This is a wakeup call for the public to see what these 20mill a year librals really are. They are hostil, crule, vicious angry spoild people. The DP has the best defamation lawsuit, and verbal assualt case know to man. Most of all your movie stars are like this….to bad the public never really see’s it. They treat the people that work for them like this all day, almost all of them. To much money in Hollywood and Obama’s pocket.
I can’t believe there are people on here asking to understand Bale’s point of view. There is NO excuse for his behavior. He accuses the DP of being unprofessional. What is “professional” about Bale’s temper tantrum? You don’t scream and yell at people at work who make mistakes. You address it calmly and if that doesn’t work you go through the appropriate channels.
This guy sucks!
I will boycott this movie based on CB’S behavior and everyone else should too! Hit him where it hurts so he shapes up and treats people with more respect – I agree with another poster, definite ROID RAGE!
What a spoiled brat. As far as talent goes, he was totally outclassed by Ledger’s acting skills in Dark night so I figure his days are numbered-classless jerk.
Those of you who believe Bale’s rant was justified are probably in the business, and also justify your own bad behavior. NO circumstances or events leading up to this explosion could ever justify or condone the verbal abuse he dished out. Speaking as a professional therapist, this man has internal demons that need to be dealt with.
Who is the f*^$%#g ass here? What an unprofessional, foul-mouthed, immature, ignorant rant. Christian, your are an actor. You are just not that important in the grand scheme of things. No one is so important that it is ok to treat someone like you treated Bruce. You needed to have your mouth washed out and to be put in time out until you could behave yourself like any other naughty little boy.
Overuse of cuss words is a verbal crutch. It shows that the user either has a weak vocabulary or a weak mind — or both.
Christian. Dude. Get a thesaurus – and a grip. You are exposing yourself.
It just shows that the DP was way out of control, and immature. To try and justify this by the “picked on DP working in a tough Hollywood environment,” is just absurd on so may levels.
Only an ill-willed DP, who feels actor’s are below him/her, would make excuses for not being still during a shoot… and would need help as well.
The DP was obviously not appreciative that when a director says “quiet on the set” and “nobody move or make noise.” He simply did not want to stop. 5 will get you 10 he has learned his lesson. Unfortunately, he learned it the hard way.
CB seemed to have held his anger in until the DP needed to be put in his place because the DP would not stop. Obviously this was the only time CB blew up and was then sent to TMZ. If CB had multiple blow ups we would know about, so for all the “sin-counters,” why are you all so mad for one blow-up? I guess everyone upset with CB never commited the sin of anger & profanity. I didnt know we had so many holy stone-throwers.
Well i for one hope CB continues to defend his profession by those who feel actors are below them.
…and if i was given a dollar for every music or movie review by the entertainment press and/or entertainment bloggers with a profanity in it, and ones said out of anger et al, i would be rich.
lets get real.
First off, there are a million DP’s for every one CB and if you think this doesn’t happen on nearly every movie set – regardless who’s acting, you are stupid. The best actors are usually the most intense. This also shows he takes a lot of pride in his work and wants to put the best product he can on the screen. If you’re working on your spread sheet at the office and some clown is being distracting and hurting your productivity, would you not be pissed?
All over a useless movie. There is very little value to his career so why be so angry over it. At the end of his life he can say “I spent my time pretending to be other characters”.
I have to laugh at how people hold up these actors who contribute nothing to society.
If I was the guy he was yelling at we would have gone at it right there.
Bale’s rant only hit a 3.0 on the richter scale compared with any agent in town’s rant against their assistant.
This ranks as “nice” compared to at least twenty incidents of agents and producers I could name.
Overpaid, cry baby of an actor in a show that no one is gonna watch.
WWCD
What Would Clint Do?
He was saying “Bryce” as in Bryce Dallas Howard who he was doing a scene with. He was being shot facing Bryce who was off camera when the DP tried to adjust a light behind Bryce which distracted Bale.
The director Bruce tried to calm him down and he told Bruce ‘No.’
BYW – I think Bale was right on blowing up. I love when people are honest and passionate about their work.
