• HBO & Cinemax continue to crop all 2.35:1 ‘Scope flicks down to 1.78:1 and create ‘full screen’ editions for their HD feeds because they unfortunately are still catering to the “no black bars” crowd.

  I refuse to pay $10 a month for that.

• When asked, I’m sure that HBO will blame bandwidth limitations for the 1080i instead of 1080p transmission.

  Whether that’s true or not is a technical question that’s beyond my salary level.

• 1080p would require TWICE as much bandwidth as 1080i or 720p. So typically, uncompressed 1080i requires 6Mhz of bandwidth. 1080p uncompressed would required 12Mhz, which would eat up cable and satellite bandwidth pretty quickly. NBC and CBS broadcast in primetime at 1080i, while ABC and FOX broadcast in 720p (the progressive format, with twice as many frames per second have less motion artifacts for sporting events).

  So Cinemax would look as good as NBC and CBS looks during primetime unless your cable provider adds more compression to cut down on bandwidth.
