MGM announced today that it has signed Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain) to direct and David Self (Road To Perdition) to write a new installment for its ROBOCOP franchise that's being fast-tracked for 2010. "Darren is undeniably one of the most talented, original and visceral film makers, and David is one of the greatest writers in Hollywood. All of us at MGM couldn't be more excited,” said Mary Parent, Chairman, MGM's worldwide motion picture group. Phoenix Pictures’ Mike Medavoy, who did the first Robocop at Orion for release in 1987, will produce with Arnold Messer, Brad Fischer and David Thwaites. you know, I liked Requiem for a Dream a lot, and Pi was kind of cute, but given what a huge flop The Fountain was, how does Aaronofsky keep getting these high profile big budget jobs?
I guess Aronofsky is trying something more “commercial” to atone for the box office failure of The Fountain, but I really can’t think of any reason to remake Robocop.
Maybe he can make Robocop addicted to freebasing batteries causing tragedy and award nominations for all involved.
While Im glad MGM is reviving this franchise I have my doubts about the hiring of Aronofsky. To me he’s an unproven commodity that many fan boys like to label as a visionary. Sorry, but I want a proven story teller. Give me Chris Nolan or Sam Raimi anyday of the week. Oh, I almost forgot. Talent like that, are few and far between. To me the original Robo Cop is a great movie (Yes better than IRONMAN) so I hope they do it justice!

There is a general question to ask of all remakes, isn’t it? What’s the point. I loved the first Robocop and I assume that Darren’s remake will be about making it more elaborate.
I am wondering about the remake of “Straw Dogs” announced about a year ago. I really like what Rod Lurie has done over the years (especially “The Contender”) but this just does not seem like his kind of film. In a way, he’d be better for “Robocop” because it is such a political project.
Well, MGM’s current business plan has been to mine its rights catalog, so this is no surprise. But Darren Aaronofsky fits the typical studio pattern of hiring young or marginal directors who won’t cost a lot.
Hmm… A big budget superhero-type movie paired with an artistic director, where have we seen this combination before… O yeah, that’s right, in the biggest opener of all time.
I hope these guys know what they’re doing and use practical make up effect and don’t go the BS CG route to create Robocop. Peter Weller’s humanity, Miner and Neumeir’s script, and Rob Bottin’s actually creation of the Robocop suit were what made the first one, and only the first one, great.
Guys, this is not a remake. It’s set 20 years after the original film in LA instead of Detroit. It’s a completely new entry into the franchise.

My idea would be to make a film ‘like’ Robocop. You saw a small group of B-Movie cyborg films around that time, Robocop could spring a small genre in itself.
