The Directors Guild of America and the Writers Guild of America announced today they "will meet shortly to discuss new media, including what the DGA has developed from its research and studies. Neither the WGA nor the DGA will have any further comment on the meeting or any of the information shared in the meeting." Is it possible that the Kenny Ziffren-drafted New Media proposal for the DGA could also meet with the WGA's approval?

Shh. It’s secret. Don’t tell AMPTP.
could it be that having a “plan” is what it will take to end this thing??
Triple strike!
Here comes the cavalry!!!
Man, Nick Counter sure screwed up when he convinced the studio chiefs to let him throw down that NO RESIDUALS ANYMORE EVER proposal. He unified the WGA, he militarized SAG, and he apparently even scared the shit out of the DGA. What a fool.
I wonder if Gil Gates is scared that his lasting legacy in Hollywood is to be known as “The Man Who Gave Away The Internet.”
Why didn’t the WGA do their own research? It seems short-sighted to tackle all these issues without actually doing some research or having some data on hand.
Why the hell didn’t this happen four months ago?
Glad the DGA is helping the WGA. If all the 3 guilds are cooperating and on the same page the AMPTP is fu**ed!
If all 3 guilds start cooperating the AMPTP is fu**ed!
This is the best thing we can hope for and a wonderful holiday gift for all. To see the guilds come together as a family of artists united in their fight to make a fair deal that will improve all our future is just the answer that we need to break the wake up the AMPTP and stop their unreasonable, non-nonnegotiable grandstanding.

Hiring one of the sharpest and widely respected minds in Hollywood to come up with a residual formula, an area in which he is one of the industry’s few acknowledged masters?
Oh, well. Maybe next time.
How soon is soon? Please don’t wait until after Christmas to meet. How about NOW?

Their awful, disingenuous, patronizing press releases fortify us (the WGA) again and again and again. . .
The DGA doesn’t need to strike: all it needs to do is to refuse to talk until the WGA strike is settled. Michael Apted, please, as a fellow former Brit, wait this one out. Do not negotiate anything until the WGA strike is resolved. In the meantime, I think all WGA members – and maybe members of the public, too – should call the DGA (tel: 310-289-2000 or 800-421-4173) and ask, very politely, that they not enter into any negotiations with the AMPTP until the AMPTP concludes a fair agreement with the Writers Guild. WGA, DGA and SAG is an unbeatable triple-whammy.
I can’t say whether or not the DGA proposals will pass muster with the WGA but one thing is for certain: Ken Ziffren is an extremely smart guy and a talented dealmaker. The WGA negotiators would do well to carefully study whatever framework he has laid out because they just might learn something, namely to hire someone who knows what the fuck they are doing to make your deals.
I agree that the “get rid of all resids, do a study” proposal was really dumb, since no one in the WGA, SAG or DGA would even consider it. It pissed everyone off. But I do think the DGA can make a deal with the AMPTP – and that might not be such a bad thing. It’s clear that the AMPTP have some kind of internet formula up their sleeves. It’s equally clear that for some unclear reason, but one that is at least partially tied up with deep loathing for Patric and David, they won’t lay it out for the WGA just yet. Maybe it’s waiting for force majeure, or maybe it’s just that they’d rather reward the DGA with the deal for being calm, low-key types. Which is fine by me if the deal’s decent. I’ve got no problem with the WGA being the red-faced frothing bad cop as long as good cop DGA gets a decent deal and we can all get back to arguing about important stuff like the “a film by” credit. At this point I’d wager the moguls would burn a whole year of TV just so they could make the deal with the DGA rather than the WGA.
In the light of the very welcome meeting between the WGA and the DGA to discuss the strike, I would like to retract my suggestion (in the Comments above) that individual WGA members call the DGA to ask them not to negotiate with the AMPTP. PLEASE DO NOTHING. It is an extremely encouraging development that the Writers Guild and the Directors Guild are talking, and I don’t want anyone to do anything that might in any way compromise these discussions. Many thanks, Alexander
I personally like that the DGA has stated how much time and money it’s taken for them to arrive at the figures to forecast New Media growth. I’ve been following these threads and haven’t heard the WGA make that claim. I also personally wish the DGA luck at reaching a deal — this is truly going to take a collective effort above and beyond what any of us could have imagined.
omg.. good work, dude
