It's time to once more highlight the discraceful silence of Hollywood stars over the long-term care closings at the Motion Picture & Television Fund. Particularly appalling is the extent to which A-list board and foundation members now are distancing themselves from the MPTF and its scandal. I've obtained the following email exchange between Kevin Spacey's publicist and Guy Adams, the Independent UK newspaper journalist whose article about the closings generated the following correspondence.
It's quite an eye opener:

Dear Guy
I am writing in regard to your story today about the Motion Picture and Television Fund and the decision to close its nursing facility in California.
I represent Kevin Spacey who has asked me to point out that he is not a member of the Board of that organisation as you suggest in the piece, and as such has had no involvement in this decision. We would be grateful if you could ensure that the piece is corrected online ASAP and that you issue a correction in the main paper tomorrow.
Many thanks and I would be grateful if you could contact me to confirm receipt of this email.
Best

Hi Nicola,
Kevin Spacey's named on the website of the MPTF as a member of the MPTF Foundation Board of Directors
Are you quite sure he's not mistaken?
Because that would mean that the MPTF has made a bizarre and rather serious error. And as unfortunate as their running of the hospital has been, they are not an organisation prone to that kind of cock-up.
In fact, if they are advertising that Kevin is connected to their organisation and he isn't, then I think that would probably be worthy of a story in iteslf.
Could you investigate?
Thanks
Guy

Hi Guy
There is a Corporate Board of Directors and a Fund Board of Directors, neither of which Kevin is involved in and which clearly are the operational and decision making bodies for the MPTF, including the decision I would expect around the residential home. I too have seen the website – all I can think is that the Foundation is an honorary and purely presentational body as he hasn’t heard anything from them, nor been involved in any decisions they have taken, certainly for the 6 years he has been in London. He has done some fundraising in the past but thats the full extent of his involvement. Your story suggests that the folks you name have been involved in the decision, which is misleading, although I appreciate the website is unhelpful.

I think you're trying - as David Mills might say - to turn a rather tight corner here.
Yesterday's piece didn't say KS had a role in the decision to close the home. It did say that he was one of the MPTF's "starry board members." And those board members - all thirty of them - together with anyone else who allows their name to be attached to the MPTF, must now accept responsibility for the organisation's actions.
Being a board member for a charitable organisation does, of course, allow you to bask in the reflected glory of its successes. By the same token, it also requires you to take heat when that organisation faces criticism.
I think if KS wants to avoid being caught up in this affair, he really ought to resign from the Foundation Board.
Apopros of his comment that he's had no active role in the MPTF for six years, that's as may be. However a critic might say that it is exactly this sort of apathy that has led to the MPTF's current financial problems - and caused more than a hundred elderly people to be kicked out of their retirement homes.
For the sake of clarity, and to afford the right to reply, I will happily to print your emails outlining KS's position. However I don't think the original piece warrants correction.

I don’t want you to print my emails, thank you very much. They were not written for publication. I will let you know if we decide to write a letter for publication.

Hmm. Funny that.

Nikki and Guy -
Thank you for shining the light on this issue… and for keeping the long-term care closings at the Motion Picture & Television Fund in the spotlight. The MPTF used to be on our list of annual donations… no more.
The lack of donations is why it’s closing.
Not true. The lack of donations is not the problem. The MPTF leadership has decided they do not want to keep the long-term care efforts going and are not encouraging people to donate to them.
Typical publicist crap when they lie, get caught in their lie, then are too stupid to realize all of their comments are subject to public dissemination. That college graduate needs to return to assisting!
Kevin Spacey is listed as on the Foundation Committee of the Motion Picture and Television Fund — just check their web site.
The first crack in the A-list foundation that the MPTF holds so dear. It’s personally gratifying that someone you admire has the balls to take a step back from this issue and say “hey man, I want nothing to do with this!”
We know there are other cracks, defections – whatever you want to call it. Momentum (unlike ‘revenge’) is a dish best served hot, and we are on fire! We will see this through!
Good on ya Kevin! Now, jump in for the big win and contact us at http://www.savingthelivesofourown.org. We’re saving lives, saving the future of motion picture and television healthcare, and returning the Motion Picture Home to the world class healthcare status it once enjoyed.
You really are a piece of work Mr. Stellar
Kevin, make a choice please. Action, not apathy.

Hollywood has been good to you, Kevin… Now, like your movie…PAY IT FORWARD.
The good news is that however he was listed, or whatever his affiliation, he WANTS OUT!!
Who would want their name to be associated with this travesty? Spacey is a talented guy who is savvy enough to know which way the wind is blowing. He doesn’t want his legacy tarnished with this crap like it will tarnish Michael Douglas, Spielberg, Mr. and Mrs. Beatty, etc., etc.
Spacey’s name was just removed from the MPTF Wikipedia page.
SNAP!!

Ummmm. Check it agin…..it’s still there under FOUNDATION COMMITTEE…..
SNAP!
He’s not a board member … and he was just walking his dog at four in the morning in that London park. Yeah, that’s the ticket…
Kevin Spacey, Michael Douglas, Heather Locklear, Warren Beatty, Annette Benning, Nora Epron, John Wells, Barry Diller, Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, David Geffen. I had to use some of your services and charitable organizations that you have donated to and gotten very little help from, if any. The MPTF Foundation turned me down flat when I was sick and homeless. I got very little help from the David Geffen Aids Project Los Angeles center. Now I am better and can help with the fight to keep the LTC open. And IT WILL STAY OPEN! You are being called out!!! Where were you rich bastards when I needed your help. No where to be found. And now you want to do this to elderly folks who can’t fend for themselves. You billionaires need a reality check!
DISTINGUISHED HUMANITARIANS MY ASS!!!

“The good news is that however he was listed, or whatever his affiliation, he WANTS OUT!!”
How is it good that he wants out and away from the situation. If he really wanted to use his fame to make the world a better place, taking his name off of a list instead of speaking out against what is happening does little for those affected.
How many other Board members are so clueless that they don’t even know they are on the Board?!
MPTF Administrators are on the Titanic. This is the tip of the iceberg.
…and I was in Switzerland during the…
I think Kevin Spacey is getting an undeserved bad rap here.
Looking at the MPTF site, Spacey’s publicist is correct: he is not listed as a member of the Corporate Board of Directors or the Fund Board of Trustees (these two BOARDS presumably being comprised of the Motion Picture & Television Fund DECISION-MAKERS). He is listed as being a member of a COMMITTEE. There is overlap between membership of the two boards and the committee, but Kevin is not on either board.
Spacey has been a supporter of the MPTF; perhaps he was named to the Foundation COMMITTEE as a way of honoring is public support.
I suspect that most of the people replying here are members of “Saving the Lives of Our Own.”
I think you are right. I don’t understand why he’s being singled out . . . He’s not on the decision making boards, and he’s someone who raised funds specifically to help keep it open.
Surely there are far better targets to choose from.
I’m baffled . . .
I think I want to marry Guy.
The truth is H’wood will kick to the curb its elderly w/out even a 2nd thought. Look what they did to Mickey Rooney or Ernest Borgnine or that horse that used to be Mr. Ed! He went from A-list TV star to factory glue!
That is a celebrity list of shame now.
Maybe Steven S. will make one of his famous on camera cinematic historical documentary collections of the ill and dying at the MPTF, so their final thoughts and remembrances will be recorded before they’re lost forever…
I don’t understand… Hollywood is flush with money. Of course there are many who barely scrapr by, but there are also many who makes millions and millions of dollars every year. So, why is this essential facility closing again?
i just went to point out- mr spacey is one of many actors who descended on our residents during award season. granted he is not the only one….but after his oscar win i remember him prefacing his love and commitment to our residents…well if mr spacey was just saying that…it is a proof most actors become politicians during award season they will do and say any thing to garner a vote by they way our residents had a lot of vote…can some one post his acceptance speech can not find it on u-tube can not find it….emmmm funny>>
Kevin wasn’t just saying it. He raised money to keep the place open. Other folks closed it.
Folks are being mean to one of the folks who worked to keep the money flowing into the institution.
Why not go pick on folks who work on the committees that make decisions about how the money is spent?
It is correctly pointed out by Mr. Adams that over 100 patients in the care of the Long Term Care unit at the Motion Picture Home are being kicked out of their retirement home by the MPTF Board.
Kudos to Kevin Spacey for recognizing the lack of humanity this represents. If only he could speak out publically.
—I’m not on the board but my name is there…while it looks good I’ll leave it there….when it looks bad I will be incensed and ask for it to be removed. Hey, I can’t lose.
It’s a town that eats its young. What would you expect it to do to its old? Remember; what have you done for me lately? At 80 no matter what you did…sound, picture, script, grip, it could in no way be “lately”.
Evil begets evil and karma will get them all. What do you think Made-off was folks? Their karma coming back to get their beloved MONEY.
We’ve learned tonight that Jodie Foster claims she did not know that her money was needed elsewhere when she made a large bequest to the MPTF for the Jodie Foster pool.
I’m telling ya – like rats leaving a sinking ship, they’re all distancing themselves from this.
This reporters did a disservice to is audience and to Kevin Spacey. His own source material clearly states that Spacey is not on the Board as he claims and is only a member of a “Foundation Committee” which if he knew anything about non-profit organizations Adams would realize they are not included in the executive decision making processes. I am surprised these were published since clearly Adams was an idiot in this case.
