Yes, the show jumped the shark last season (sorry to say, but it's true -- unless of course Ari Gold starts screaming about "that bitch at Deadline Hollywood Daily" at which point I'll claim this is the best series ever...). Yet Hollywood still finds something to laugh at weekly in HBO's Entourage which returns for its 5th season September 7th. So now Fox mogul Tom Rothman and NBC mogul about to go-go Ben Silverman will appear in cameos this fall as well as ABC's The View and film critics Richard Roeper and Michael Phillips. Now exactly whose idea is that edgy viewing? Unless, of course, Ben is partaking of weed or worse on air.

Isn’t that one note show played out by now?
Won’t be watching Entourage or HBO anymore.
We, like many friends, got rid of cable.
It’s a rip off. And, the lack of competition is corrupt.
There’s not enough worth watching on tv anymore anyway – too much reality tv, and repeats of shows.
doing weed?
Entourage has always and will always suffer from one major problem. It’s leading character doesn’t seem to give a rat’s ass whether his career lives or dies. The way Vince is written and or played with that cool whatever needs to happen will happen resolve is off-putting. Good actors are passionate and borderline crazy(At least when it comes to their work). The show keeps trying to convince us that Vince isn’t just a movie star but and actor’s actor… in that case please oh please please please raise the stakes AND FEEL SOMETHING!
I think we will see the ‘Curse of Entourage’ whereby anybody who appears in a cameo on the show gets fired from their day job (of course that has already happened to Roeper and Phillips, but Rothman and Silverman will go within the year)
I agree about the problems with the character of Vince. I’ve never met an actor so laissez faire about his own career so that bit got old fast. Still has some laughs in it, but not worth the price of HBO (nothing on that channel really is at this point – I’m pretty sure I shouldn’t be laughing at “True Blood,” particularly the sex scenes)
Don’t know about “jumping the shark”, if you look at the ratings for the show, they were at their highest the last season finally, again the “opinion vs. reality” debate does’nt hold water.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks this show is overrated. When is HBO going to have anything worth watching again? I mean, every damn night brings another 1/2 hour advertisement-disguised-as-documentary on a piece of crap Warner Brothers upcoming theatrical release followed by an hour of “Generation Kill” (which I tried to watch once but just wasn’t interested in) which is usually then followed by an hour long documentary on some subject generally designed to paint a negative image of the U.S.
And don’t give me any B.S. about my turning this article into a political rant– HBO did it themselves!
Speaking purely from a business standpoint, what is HBO thinking by continuing to intentionally insult about 1/2 of their audience?
If you lived in LA and/or worked in the industry, than Entourage should make sense to you. If you do and it doesn’t, well, not sure what to say.
The show is BRILLIANT.
“if Ari called out that bitch at deadline hollywood…”
Way to grovel for a plug on show
Doing weed – or perhaps something else, but even ENTOURAGE won’t get that real or edgy. Frankly this show is like candy – fun to look at, great to eat the whole box, and then a stomach ache and regret later. Cameos? Hmm, smells like ‘I Love Lucy’ in L.A.
“NBC mogul about to go-go”? Did I miss something? Is Ben Silverman getting fired soon? (Please say yes.)
Vince REFUSES to do any “studio” films, other than Aquaman. Then spends a whole season proclaiming Medellin to be his baby, a film he’s been chasing for two years. Fine. But he doesn’t give us a SINGLE reason why this film is his passion project. 1) He’s not Hispanic. 2) He has no connection to Pablo Escabar or drug Lords or drug addiction or the cocaine cowboys of the 80’s. 3) Even if he did possess some philosophical or ethereal connection to the film, he couldn’t articulate it. This idiocy and lack of reason and ill-motivation make him not laid back or chill or Eastern but stupid. Meanwhile, he continues to turn down films.
It’d be cool if Vince became a waiter. See how Buddhist he is slinging burgers. THAT would make a good twist of events.
And based on what people are saying here, I think Johnny Drama is more lovable because he wants to act in a way that’s believable.
I live in LA, work in the industry and Entourage sucks.
The season arcs go nowhere, the episode structure is soft and based on coincidence and the dramatic lead (Eric) is inert and whiney.
You can almost hear the writer’s room each week “How do we get Ari out to the beach house?” “How do we get Ari out to the strip club?” etc… It’s like the old story about the STAR TREK writer’s room in which each week they had to figure out a reason for the Transporter to be broken so they couldn’t just beam Kirk out of harm’s way.
Yet I still watch…
Trey – “Jumping the Shark” actually refers to a show going past its best days, its creative expiration date.
The show not only is not funny but it has no stakes. Who cares about any of these characters? I always wonder the way Vince is – boring and not caring at all about his craft – is a creative choice or the limitations of its actor.
And Turtle and Drama have literally become the Jack and Karen of that show. But I do love Ari. Ari should have his own show.
EXT. STUDIO LOT
An Assistant paces and WE move in, listening to her phone call.
ASSISTANT: I’m sorry, I know you need notes on The Office Spinoff but Ben’s in make-up… how about if you just have Amy Poehler look into camera and roll her eyes like, “I can’t believe this is my life.” It always works for everyone else. (BEAT) I gotta go. They’re totally fucking with Ben’s hair.
AND SCENE
i do know what to say: if you live in LA and/or work in the industry and think Entoruage is BRILLIANT, you are a poseur.
Nick-
Brilliant? hmmmm its the same show over and over…
Are we gonna get the movie? Are we gonna get swag? Are we gonna get laid?
ok doug, rob, lev et al…looks like nikki’s given you a mandate just like the studio execs she claims to hate….give her (DH) a mention in ENTOURAGE and she will keep the howling, envious hollywood dogs at bay!
as most hollywood insiders know, the show’s a hit and everyone wants to be involved. guys you should let Nikki view your phone logs just to prove it probably takes 3-5 full time assistants saying “no” around the clock just for you to get your desks cleared enough to actually sit down and write a script safely without being hit up for another favor by another agent/manager wanting their clients (or themselves for that matter) to be on the show.
i agree with Nick. “The show is brilliant” and can’t wait for new season to start…..Love to you E – boys and girls!
best wishes 2 you 2 Nikki …
and nobody noticed the EERIE parallel between Medallin and Soderbergh’s Che?
how amazing that entourage foresaw this epic about a latin rascal being too long at Cannes and having to be cut down?
come on… i’m flabbergasted.
i love the show. long live the show. best thing in tv.
Dumb show with dumb guys doing dumb things.
Pasadena.
How entertaining these comments are! Maybe that bitch at Deadline Hollywood Daily can turn them into a pilot — call Ari Gold immediately!
Do the folks in the industry really think the show is made to appeal to them? Do they think the producers care about their opinion of the show? Have they bothered to look at the numbers before declaring the show moribund? Hah!
Do the folks in the industry really think the show is trying to portray Hollywood accurately? Do they think that *any* industry is accurately portrayed in film and television? I worked in the computer industry. Would anyone care to ask me if I think information technology is accurately portrayed in film and television? Hah!
Accurately depicted or not, take Vince’s advice, Hollywood: sit back, fire up a doob, and chill out.
So long as they can come up with more scenes involving furries, I’m sure Entourage will remain a fine piece of entertainment.
Out of work Diamond Girl:
Just how does “most of Hollywood know” that Entourage is a hit? Can’t be because of ratings, since HBO is a premium subscription service. DVD sales? Check out Amazon, it’s barely in the top 20. No, dear heart, it is a “hit” only in the eyes of a few Hollywood exclusionists that gaze lovingly at their botoxed navel. My humble opinion? A horrible show with unlikeable characters and industry-narcissistic plots. With the vast majority of mid-level actors seeing their livelihoods evaporating, right-to-work states and Canada grabbing production from California and corporate barons “consolidating” studios (re: firing people), I fail to see the humor in this abject piece of ego-laden drivel. You want asshole agents? Rent “Swimming With Sharks”.
I haven’t read all the comments due to lack of time
but all the people talking about “jumping the shark” – Nikki included, are absolutely SPOT ON. This show DIED the minute they started doing ridiculous things like ‘Booty call animal costume sex via Craigslist’ – are you fucking kidding me Entourage writers? Are you fucking KIDDING me????
*phew*
Entourage Rules
Kinda figures. There is something really odd about NBC programming honchos feeling the need to perform. Zucker got to cuss and posture on ‘Fat Actress’ so Silverman’s desire for exposure isn’t a surprise. They should just stay in their offices and at least attempt to save NBC from it’s continual decline into obscurity.
Never mind – its’ probably too late anyway.
Entourage is about as real a representation of LA and the industry as Sex in the City was about NYC.
There’s a lot of anger here about this show.
I think you need to hug it out bitches.
The show’s doing well for hbo. Scripted tv (what’s left of it) needs all the help it can get. Don’t hate. Moving on.
Entourage = major suckitude.
the writing is poor, the stories are lame (my GF has her period, i can’t have sex with her..??) is that supposed to be good? I’m sorry, did we wander into a freshman boy locker room? I think those jokes wouldn’t even be funny to freshman guys any more.
this show is so over rated and yet, Piv still gets laid…
And Ben Silverman must do a lot of coke. He’s a hollywood cliche just like entourage is.
i’m sorry, but i’m not going to not say a scripted show is bad just because it’s scripted. the show is unfunny and lame!
Entourage is life style porn for men aged 18-35. Simple as that.
This is a show about LA life made by people in LA for people that live in the back of beyond on a farm in Ohio or somewhere miles and miles from LA and showbiz in every aspect.
A friend of mine spoke to a certain rising young actor a few years ago and he joked that his life must be just like Entourage and with a heavy voice the young actor replied “….I wish.”
In short, I love Entourage. It’s fantasy and self indulgent. Really there is nothing like settling down, having a beer and just indulging in a few episodes.
People in La don’t like Entourage because it is a true depiction of how New Yorker Mark Wahlberg owned all the lightweights in LA like kids in a candy store always remembering to only trust his east coast crew.
It doesn’t surprise me that many of the same lightweights profess to not like the show while they predictably boost it’s rating by never missing it. The same way Vince’s New York Jedi Mind trick just seems like a lack of effort when he is in control from the start.
WHen Johnny Dram thanks God and does the Viking Quest “Victory” It is classic. I cry every time. LA is entourage and if you hadn’t notice New Yorkers have always run it and always pissed off the locals with how easy it is for them.
Entourage is true. So of course you guys hate it.
Mark Wahlberg is from Dorchester, Massachusetts.
These comments are great. The show is about friendship. People who don’t like it take it too seriously or don’t have friends.
So Boston also Owns LA , Thanx for the correction.
Boston New york, DC And Philly. Every player knows who to trust. You local LA gangbanger want to be surfers just keep talking and remember to beg when you ask the banks in New York to finance you.
The show is about loyalty. That’s why these guys run around like kids in a candy store. They are grounded in their friendship from the low balling and backsatbbing and all the while have an advantage that their competition never does. They KNOW they can trust their frineds. LA style is talk nice and stab in the back later. East coast protects it’’s friends.
Besides Arnold owns Mexican sound stages so he is just watching production leave and doing nothing. Typical Californian
Entourage is cool.
And working in the film and tv business; more indie feature projects than anything else…all the crazies and situations on the show are pretty much true to form.
If you don’t think crazed egos, insecurities, etc., aren’t the truth in Hollywood…then you’re just desperate for your next check…and love the spotlight more than doing the actual work.
But…being from the midwest and a working class family, much like Wahlberg himself being from the east and a working class family himself…we understand the whole deal.
And can only laugh about it.
And just keep on working.
“DVD sales? Check out Amazon, it’s barely in the top 20.”
Wow. Ok. Most would kill to be in the top 20 in Amazon sales of anything. And that’s an example of how it sucks?
btw, for those of you interested in etymology: “Jumping the Shark” must refer to the later years of “Happy Days” when Fonzie ski jumped over a shark in his leather jacket. I think it’s a little premature to say “entourage” has sunk to this level, though they do have some work to do…
Che Guevara was a revolutionary hero.Pablo Escobar was a crazed greed animal that had women and children killed for the sake of making money from drug trafficking. There is no comparison in the men or the movies.
Is it safe to say HBO’s Entourage has “Nuked the Fridge?”
Seems to me, one of those guys that lives out back in the woods, that most of the carping in these comments is coming from frustrated Hollywood wannbe’s that can’t get that big break. It’s a TV show for goodness sakes. It’s not Edward R. Morrow interviewing Mahatma Ghandi. It’s a quirky show with some relevancy to the industry, but by no means intended to be a documentary. Relax, enjoy the occasional naked hottie and take it for what it is; 30 minutes of respite from an otherwise dreary world.
