So fired New Line founders Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne have dubbed their new company "Unique Features" with plans to make 2 to 3 movies a year. Everything in today's press handout is exactly what I've reported for weeks and weeks. But Hollywood types are telling me they nearly puked reading that new blow job interview with Shaye in the Los Angeles Times. Several bigwigs told their offices to cancel the paper because they were so disgusted by Patrick Goldstein's unwillingness to even challenge Shaye, especially on his comparison of his ouster to "factories being closed and people's lives being displaced and imagining what happens when people have to start all over again...." Yeah, when I think about laid-off auto workers, I automatically think about rich prick Bob Shaye who only has to sell a Picasso to keep himself in luxury. Geez, when did LA Times journalists become stenographers? Well, I predicted back in June that Patrick would do exactly this after he began his blog: "Down on his luck Bob Shaye has repeatedly vented in Goldstein's LA Times column and now will have an additional venue in which to boast about his under-appreciated genius. ('From the first, they were all against me ... Ahh, but the strawberries, that's where I had them...')" Really, why don't Goldstein and Shaye just get a room.

you really hate these guys, don’t you?
Shaye is the gift that keeps on giving, isn’t he?
that’s a lazy, soulless name
The LA Times article is hilarious.
“…Now Shaye is making it official, saying he and Lynne have formed Unique Features, which will make two to four films a year, funded and distributed by Warners as part of a three-year first-look distribution deal.”
AHA HA HA HA HA AHAHAHA
Warner doesn’t want New Line on the lot and is just burning through the films they have in the can for release and taking any plum projects they have for themselves.
If Shaye really thinks that WB are going to greenlight two or three of his projects a year he is totally of his head.
Yeah, Unique Features is going to be big. Bubble Factory big.
So who is releasing Friday the 13th and the new Nightmare on Elm Street reboots? How about Final Destination 4?
Sounds crazy, but there is an audience for these films. But I don’t trust WB with horror after the monstrosities that were House of Wax, Anything from Dark Castle, and the ridiculous Reaping.
What a dull name. I’m surprised that they didn’t call it MIRACLE PICTURES. You know… “If it’s a good picture, it’s a MIRACLE”!
I think they should at least get credit for giving us Lord of the Rings, as they should have been – three epic films..Austin Powers – at least the first one. Really put Peter Jackson on the map, in a big way. John Waters! Freddy Krueger! Come on now…
That’s weird. I heard UF stood for “Unwatchable Films.”
Wow……comments from people who have had no success in the business demeaning someone who has?
No? which companies did you build?
seems almost every post is filled with Jealously?
Gotta give a shout out to mark ordesky who was really the man at new line behind lord of the rings… he deserves the credit, not these guys… just sayin’
HATE THEM
When I finished my first screenplay I couldn’t get anyone to read it. I knew no one.
Query letters went nowhere. The only people who would touch it had no more connections than I did.
I read a Sunday NY Times piece about Bob Shaye and decided I had to talk to him.
I called New Line that Sunday, navigated their voice mail system and got into Shaye’s voicemail box.
I left a rambling 15 minute message about why they should be making movies with me.
I think I even had the audacity to hit the urgent button to signify how important this message was.
That Monday, New Line called me at home and told me, “You got his attention. Send the script.”
I sent it. They passed. It was my first script. I had no business sending it to them.
Yet they were cool enough to send me the coverage which help me with my rewrite.
They also told me I could submit to them without an agent unsolicited at any time in the future.
They gave me the name and number of one of their story execs (Janice Chaskin) who I could contact.
You may think Shaye is an asshole, but I think otherwise. The way I was treated that time let me know that my dream was possible. I thank him for that.
I’ve never worked with New Line. Never made a penny from them. One of their execs was downright rude to me during a pitch last year.
But, I’m doing what I always wanted to do for a living and I’m thankful for the encouragement I was given back then.
I’m not posting my name because I don’t want to be accused of trying to suck up. I doubt Shaye remembers this, but it happened.
Just wanted to post a good story about the guy. He’s not Satan.
Maybe their logo will be a penis with two heads. Cuz that’s a Unique Feature.
B-, Paramount will distribute the “Friday the 13th” remake both theatrically and on home video, while Warner Brothers will distribute “Final Destination 4″ and the ANOES remake under the New Line Cinema name.
I dunno, I kinda like Shaye, But then again I like eating raw cactus, prickly side up, too.
I don’t normally go for comment fisking, but this comment just screams for it.
How can you be so sure of that Mr. Independant Producer, if that is your real name. I recently learned that DT is actually Stephen Spielberg and Naked Lunch is really Warner boss Jeff Bewkes.
Shaye is not criticized for building the company.
He is criticized for sinking a once successful company through ego-based decision making and actively alienating everyone he did business with. (Especially the people responsible for New Line’s biggest movies.)
If New Line was run well and not into the ground, then no one would be jerking his chain. Because there’s no deodorant like success.
I think it’s mostly anger at his stupidity. He had the golden goose: his own movie studio with a roster of successful films, and he let his ego strangle it to death.
Aside from his personal wealth, what else is there about him to inspire envy or jealousy? He had success, he blew it, and now he has to start all over again, while being considered a laughingstock.
That doesn’t sound all that great.
PS: It’s spelled “independent.” Though it was probably a typo. They happen because nobody’s perfect.
It will be UNIQUE if WB greenlights any of their PICTURES.
I liked the submission by WRITER above, if you hate these folks so much, can you (w/o going on and on) explain to us why you do – why YOU have a problem with them and I don’t mean saying “they sank New Line.”
“Bubble Factor big!” So friggin true. Will WBros even bother trying to make their pix? Likely not. And comparing themselves to a factory closing? Only in Hwood is being left w. millions upon millions compared to losing your health insurance. Shame on Shaye!
Comment of the day: “you really hate these guys, don’t you?”
Look, Shaye knows something about the motion picture industry and most importantly, the film-going audience. Like “A Writer” mentions above, he does listen to feedback from people who dig his movies and he does take chances. His recent appearance on “Charlie Rose” is a pretty good primer, if you’re a kid trying to figure out (some aspects of) the Industry.
Shaye is an Old School showman, akin to Goldwyn, Arkoff and Corman. I don’t think UF is a vanity deal, I think it’s a WB insurance policy.
New Line owns the Friday the 13th franchise in its entirety– hence JASON GOES TO HELL, JASON X and FREDDY VERSUS JASON. Paramount gave up the license years ago.
bob is the dumbest lamest meanest most selfish person i’ve ever met. i sincerley look forward to taking a dump on his grave one day.
I just read the article. I think the “factory closing” quote is being taken out of context here. I think he was comparing it to the closing of New Line and 500 people losing their jobs rather than comparing it to his personal ouster from the company.
I worked for New Line from 1991 to 1998. I then went to work for arch rival Miramax from 1998 to 2004. When I informed Bob Shaye I was accepting an offer to work for Miramax, he stated to me that although he didn’t like the idea, he understood it was a great opportunity for me and when the time was right, he would bring me back to the fold. After a great six year run with Miramax, I decided in 2004 that I wanted to try something new. When Bob heard I left Miramax, he wanted to have lunch. Next thing I knew, Bob, Michael, Steve Einhorn, COO of NLHE, and Rolf Mittweg had created a new position specifically for me. When I signed my employment agreement, a bottle of champagne arrived at my home with a hand written note from Bob Shaye stating “Welcome Home”. I will never forget that gesture. I spent 10 years working at New Line. It was a great place for me as well as for many other employees. The studio Bob created from a loft in NYC 40 years ago will probably never be replicated. I wish Bob and Michael the best in their new venture.
I like how all the haters are outsiders looking in and the people defending Bob are people who, you know, actually worked with him– even if they just lost their jobs.
You’re right Jack – but also notice not ONE of us who lost our jobs last week are on here defending Toby Emmerich…
Former NL’er– AMEN to that. Double Amen, even. I think everyone who worked at NL over the past seven years knows who’s really to blame here.
