10:25 AM UPDATE: Final North America theater count for New Moon: 4,024. Estimated theater count for midnight shows: 3,500. Final theater count for Twilight re-issue: 2,057.
Of course Summit Entertainment is lowering expectations, privately saying that the Twilight sequel will do $85 million from 4,000+ theaters on Friday, including Thursday midnights. That's despite all the hype and sold out screenings. "Because hard comps haven't seen something like this," a studio insider tells me. But my quick survey of box office analysts shows that Hollywood is expecting New Moon to do Iron Man numbers, or $100M. Iron Man, too, was a highly anticipated pic with a built-in audience because of branded material opening on a 3-day weekend (albeit the start of the summer movie season) playing in 4,000+ theaters. And Iron Man debuted in May 2008 with $98.6M from 4,154 runs. So the thinking is that New Moon can do that, too. It's certainly going to do better than than the original Twilight's $69.6M opening from 3,649 dates in November 2008. But Summit keeps pointing to this weekend's crowded marketplace even though I and others think those movies which are opening or holdovers just aren't competing for the same filmgoers. Predictions are for Roland Emmerich's disaster hit 2012 to do another $30M-$35M from Friday through Sunday if it drops the expected 60%, Sandra Bullock's Blindside should debut to low $20sM, the toon Planet 51 is expected to open in the high teens/low $20sM, and A Christmas Carol has shown a strong hold. "Can the marketplace expand enough to establish New Moon over $85M?" a Summit insider wondered aloud with me. Yes, according to the analysts who are more concerned about New Moon attracting males, any males, beyond its core of tween, teen, and older females. To that end, Summit has recently been showing a new TV spot featuring more of the werewolf-on-werewolf fang fights than Kristin Stewart and Robert Pattinson. "The midnights are going to be enormous. What remains to be seen is if the audience has broadened for New Moon or if the urgency is just that much greater," one rival studio exec explains to me. "I have heard estimates all the way up to $120M for the opening weekend, but I just don't buy it. I wouldn't be surprised if it pushes the century mark. But it's hard for me to say it goes over that mark." Stay tuned.

What ‘New Moon’ also has built in (and this has probably been said I just haven’t read it anywhere) is next weekend with family get togethers while the guys are watching football all weekend what are all the girls (and I mean ALL AGED WOMEN) going to be doing…going to see Twilight…either for the 1st time or going again with that cousin, aunt, sister that hasn’t seen it yet. I think it was brilliant timing to open it the week before Thanksgiving. I think the 1st AND the 2nd weekend numbers are going to be BIG!
I really hope those low20sM predictions for Blind Side turn out to be closer to the truth than the 9-11 million that a lot of people are predicting. Go Sandra! She is getting really good notes on her performance I hope this year she will finally make it to the best actress top5 (it will be tough though because of the remarkably strong newcomers/young actresses this year – Carey Mulligan, Gabaourey Sidibe, Saoirse Ronan, Abbie Cornish). Good luck!!!
Actually I think New Moon vs. Blind Side could potentially perform like HP4 vs. Walk the line performed a few years back on their opening weekend.
Great points, Chris. Also, the fact that after the initial release of Twilight, the books sold in ravenous numbers, hence creating an even larger audience… pre-teen to middle age(women making up about 98% of that).
I have a feeling this thing’s going to do huge numbers, for at least a month after release. Reason: multiple viewings. My daughter saw ‘Twilight’ half a dozen times. And I already know ‘New Moon’ is on her hit list for at least that many.
So…New Moon can do Iron Man numbers with only women in the audience? Sex and the City was a similar phenomenon and it only made $152 million.
Okay, okay, so this article was talking about opening weekend only, my bad. I wonder what they’re projecting the final total to be though. Iron Man made $318 million, Sex and the City $152 million, and Twilight 1 made $191 million.
Iron Man and the Star Wars sequels were not repellent to women. Twilight is repellent to any guy. No guy will see it. That puts a cap on the numbers. My guess is around $60 million, and a fall off thereafter.
Whiskey,
I can’t make up my mind if you’re stupid or just plain retarded?
$60 million, for a sequel to a movie that did $69 million a year ago? A movie that has four times the amount of tickets purchased in presales than it’s predecessor?
You’re way off base there.
I’m not discounting that this will make more than the original, if not much more – I think that much is a given.
However, I think we’ve reached a tipping point with ticket presales. Setting the new record doesn’t equate to much more than strong interest in the marketplace – everyone is buying tickets in advance for the big hot movie of the week/month. I don’t think we can or should assign a dollar amount to breaking an online ticket record.
Betcha it does more than 60, Whiskey… More like 110.
It’s gonna be sick money.
out
My best guesstimate: $300 million total (intl & dom) when all is said and done… maybe $323.
My best guess is the film will make $95 mil opening weekend, and cross the $200 mil internationally. $240 let’s say
Anybody catch Mr. Pattinson on Letterman last night? He seemed to be touching his nose a lot.
It’s not exactly right to compare SATC to anything in the Twilight series because, hello, R rating VS. PG-13 rating. There is definite limitations with an R rating-that’s obvious. New Moon will blow Twilight’s opening weekend out of the water. I think 90 million would be an appropriate low-balled number. People will be seeing this over and over. My roommate last year in college saw it 8 or 10 times in the first three weeks. Don’t underestimate this audience when it comes to shirtless werewolves and brooding vampires…
I for one hope it doesn’t do squat (wishful thinking) I am sick and tired of the over hype of Twilight. I like Vampire Movies but they need to be good, not crap. And everyone who is just now jumping on the Vampire bandwagon go away please… I can’t stand sheep! I like Vampires now because it’s the IN thing to like! Give me a freaking break…
The Twilights barely count as vampires. It’s kind of something all onto itself.
I wouldn’t be shocked if this opened over $90. I also wouldn’t be shocked with a 65%+ drop next weekend.
Wrong movie comparison I think. Not Ironman numbers. Batman and Titanic numbers. New emphasize on getting the boys to go to the Twilight series will succeed I think. The studios are not stupid. They know if they can get the guys to see the movie, they have not just a big hit, but a mega big-hit. Stephanie Meyers may be an ultra-feminine Mormon mommy, but she grew up in a large family with brothers, and has three children of her own, all boys. Additionally her husband and her father are very influential to her. Furthermore she has extended family that include uncles and male cousins. At collage and at church and elsewhere Stephanie rubbed elbows with boys as she grew up. It stands to reason that while most boys won’t read Twilight, many will see the movie just to see what the hub bub is all about. Blair Witch proved a movie didn’t have to be any good for people to go and pay money to watch it. However, New Moon will be a good movie. Expect the Movie to have the Titanic effect… many girls will see it over and over. The second to last Batman had surprising d.v.d. sales. The last Batman movie then went on to incredible numbers. New Moon is going to follow the same pattern. High D.V.D. sales is a good predictor of High ticket sales for it’s next sequel. New Moon (the movie) will balance feminine and masculine energy well. Stephanie Meyers understands boys, and this will help put the movie sales numbers over the top. Thus tickets sales will be greater than Batman The Dark Night. Big numbers at the start, and big numbers for quite some time is in the cards. Not even an invasion by aliens will slow this movie rocket-ship down. Unless those aliens are created by Stephanie Meyers, of course. Hmmm… Aliens versus Vampires, with an Alien/Vampire love triangle…maybe Stephanie will write a sequel to both of her series and combine them together. Souls invading vampires?? When it comes to this Mormon Mommy, never say never.
