Coincidence that Nick Denton did this on the day of the Oscars? Hardly.
I'd been hearing for awhile that the Gawker empire founder and chief exec was trying to sell Defamer, which accounts for only 2% of total traffic of his network ofInternet websites and had been flat for the past year. Then Denton announced Defamer was officially on the block. He had one taker but the offer wasn't good enough. "Ultimately, the brand was worth more to us as a section of the Gawker site,"
Denton writes today. So now 4-year-old Defamer is being merged into Gawker, the company's flagship gossip blog, and will continue as Gawker's entertainment column. Movie gossip will remain showcased on Defamer.com but the site will be staffed and managed as one with Gawker.com under Gawker managing editor Gabriel Snyder, a refugee from Hollywood coverage at Variety and W magazine. Gawker's Richard Lawson will be assigned to the Defamer beat. And Gawker/Defamer is hiring a Hollywood gossip writer. (Applications to gabriel@gawker.com.)
Denton wrote today on Gawker that the change "reflects Gawker's evolution into a national gossip site" which I consider a very savvy move by him.
I'm told that top Defamer editor Seth Abramovitch was offered a position with the merged Gawker/Defamer, but declined. The other Defamer writers, Stu VanAirsdale and Kyle Buchanan, were fired. Meanwhile, I hear Seth, Stu and Kyle have been asking potential employers to hire them as a "gossip team" to duplicate what they did on Defamer. That means to aggregate other people's posts, which Denton found isn't as much in demand these days as original content sites (like my own Deadline Hollywood Daily). Then again, neither of those guys are journalists. Defamer also lost a lot of its lure in the marketplace a year ago after its witty founder Mark Lisanti left to pursue a showbiz writing career, and Harvey Levin's TMZ arrived on scene to compete with established Perez Hilton.

The last few months defamer was running mostly stories from your site and the trades anyway. They had absolutely nothing original at all.
I love Gawker and Nick Denton’s other site like Jezebel and Valley Wag. Defamer just never seemed to find a voice for itself.
I was surprised he sold “The Consumerist” because with a little re-working it could have been a smash. Especially since everyone is pinching pennies.
Oh well, c’est la vie.
I went to gawker.com once but left quickly and haven’t returned because I’m not gay…
The Consumerist never sold a single advertisement; the buyer was the publisher of ad-free Consumer Reports who are using it to revitalize their operation = win-win.
Defamer was a big deal for its first few months when no one knew who was writing it.
I’d stopped reading Defamer for the most part after Lisanti left and the sheen of being the “hip blog to read” wore off. Still, though, goes to show that more than just print media is suffering in this economy.
honestly, hollywood is boring now. SNORE. Farewell, Defamer.com!
I’m still broken up that Mollygood and Stereohyped folded over…
Lisanti was the key. Once he left, Defamer felt like it was trying too hard.
Uh, #1, you do know that Valley Wag folded up this same way 4 or 5 months ago? It’s just a tiny nugget off of gawker, same as Defamer. Fire the staff save one, post the items on the main site.
Defamer lost it’s edge a while back. It used to be cool trendy industry news with a snarky twist. Now it’s just TMZ lite. It all ended when they let the facebookers into the Gawker media sites to water down the clever commentary beneath each post.
Is it just me, or has the gossip-craze run its course?
The more often lines were crossed and lighthearted gossip entered legally shady and no-fun-at-all territory (The Baldwin-tape, for example), the less willing I became to even look at the headlines.
To feature TMZ-stories on regular TV may make sense for the TV-stations, but it also makes TMZ less attractive to visit. Didn’t Perez Hilton complain that there’s no more growth? Hilton’s yesterday’s news, too. “as seen on TV” is the kiss of death… makes you look like a sell-out.
I detest Perez, don’t get his shine at all when is someone pulling the plug on him and I have not been to defamer since Lisanti said goodbye.
I read here because Nikki has insider info period. TMZ sucks and I pray for a good lawsuit to bury Levin.
The day of the interesting blog is coming to an end…glad there is still LJ!!
Yes, it’s just you, AM.
