SUNDAY AM: Disney's G rated tween/teen audience pleaser High School Musical 3: Senior Year sounded the right note at the box office this weekend to become what the studio boasted was the biggest musical ever both internationally and domestically, and the first global #1 opening since The Dark Knight. HSM3 opened with a big $16.9 million Friday from a very wide release into 3,623 North American theaters. But then it surprisingly fell 9% Saturday to make $15.3 million. So now its domestic weekend total, counting Sunday's estimated gross, is a hefty $42 million. Overseas, it did another $40 million after launching day and date in 19 territories through Sunday, including the UK, Germany, Spain, France and Brazil. Clearly, the HSM TV franchise's huge Disney Channel ratings translated into HSM3's theatrical ticket sales. Let's dance and sing and win one for the senior class! (That tried and true wholesome upbeat formula succeeds at the start of the holiday movie season yet again.) Advance sales had been off the hook for a while. Friday night, for instance, tween girls in Kalamazoo, Michigan, planned their birthday bashes around the movie's debut.
One group, accompanied by a mother, showed up in homemade HSM T-shirts (photo below). Disney knew that HSM3 would be a hard film to track since no one can recall a TV movie (as opposed to TV series) that has been made into a theatrical motion picture sequel. One for the record books. But the pic easily made the transition from the small to big screen thanks to Kenny Ortega's direction and Peter Barsocchini's script and stars Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale. HSM3 also beat its musical genre category comps, opening much better than Mamma Mia and Hairspray which also went after predominantly younger and female audiences. Internationally, HSM3 still has 35% of the world left to open, including Mexico, Italy and Belgium.
In 2nd place, Twisted Picture/Lionsgate's revolting torture porn gorefest Saw V made a $14.1 million debut Friday from 3,060 venues, then fell 30% Saturday for $9.9 million for a $30.5M weekend -- on a par with the $31.7M-$33.1M that this franchise's sequels have reliably generated even though this kind of Hard R-rated crap is increasingly repulsive to teen women on Date Night. Yet Lionsgate boasts it's on its way to becoming the top-grossing horror franchise of all time. The five Saw films have now grossed a cumulative $316.2 million to date at the domestic box office and will pass the $317.8 million hauled in by the eleven Friday the 13th films Monday or Tuesday. The Saw franchise also passed Halloween, whose nine films have grossed a cumulative $307.4 million, this past weekend. The Saw franchise is already one of the most profitable in box office history. The original Saw cost only $1.2 million to make, and the franchise now has achieved worldwide box office of more than $550 million and combined worldwide theatrical and home entertainment grosses of more than $1 billion.
But New Line/Warner Bros' been there/done that crime drama Pride And Glory starring Edward Norton and Colin Farrell made a pathetic $2.3 million Friday and $2.4 million Saturday at 2,585 plays for No. 5 and a $6.2M weekend. Then again, neither Norton or Farrell have the star power to open a movie.
Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3-D, the 2008 re-issue playing in 284 runs, took in $372K this weekend. Universal platformed Clint Eastwood's Oscar-touted The Changeling starring Angelina Jolie at 15 theaters in 9 markets for $502K from Friday-Sunday, a terrific start.
There's been tremendous interest by the public in the box office fate of Oliver Stone's W. for its second weekend in release. Well, it ran out of steam. QED International/Lionsgate's Bush biopic sank 58% to No. 7 with a $5.3M weekend from 2,050 dates and new cume of $18.7M. The $30M negative cost film should end up with $23M domestic box office gross by the end of its North American run. That means, with a $25M P&A investment and Lionsgate's distribution fees, the film won't recoup.
The rest of the Top 10 were veterans. 20th Century Fox's Max Payne starring Mark Wahlberg in the video game-turned-movie dropped 57% from a week ago for a $7.6M weekend from 3,381 dates for 3rd place. With a new cume of only $29.6M, this film is looking like an underperformer. Disney's Beverly Hills Chihuahua keeps hanging on and earned another $6.9M this weekend from 3,190 theaters for No. 4 and a solid $78.1M cume. In the 6th spot, Fox Searchlight's heartwarming The Secret Life Of Bees took in $5.9M (-44%) for the weekend from 1,630 venues for a new $19.2M cume. DreamWorks/Paramount's Shia LeBoeuf actioner Eagle Eye raked in another $5.1M this weekend from 2,558 runs for a new cume of $87.9M for #8. Warner Bros' thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe in costly Body Of Lies came in No. 9 with a $4M Friday from 2,150 theaters and weak new cume of $30.8M. And in the 10th spot, Screen Gems/Sony's Quarantine scared up another $2.5M this FSS from 2,228 plays for a fresh $28.7M cume.
Overall, this was a great weekend for Hollywood at the box office with $136M, up 35% from last year.

Well, my girlfriend loved Saw V a whole lot. Where are you getting this data that women are “repulsed” by the films.
Oh, that’s right, it’s just you. And you haven’t even bothered to watch them. If you had, you’d know that only III and IV are hyper-gory.
Nikki,
Stop the hysterical ranting against horror movies. They have a devoted following who are not hurting anyone. You make yourself sound silly, saying a movie repels the audience at the same time you are reporting it is making a huge profit. Seems like an awful lot of teen girls on date night must be going to generate a 13 million dollar Friday. Just because they don’t entertain you, doesn’t mean nobody else can enjoy them. Some people think chick flicks are revolting. LOL
Chill out!
DS
Uh, sorry, but I find it highly unlikely that HSM 3 will at least do any domination of any kind in Germany. The first-run HSM2 on free tv gathered a quota of 6.3 percent of the market share when it was aired, which translates into 1.9 M viewers in prime-time. It even lost out against a re-run of an RTL show that night, October 13, 2007, and that showing was for free.
A lot of what makes Disney money in the US doesn’t translate too well into, at least, the German markets. Case in point would be e.g. Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus. Her CD is on no. 267 of the Amazon.de sales charts, hasn’t even broken into the top 100 overall sales…
There’s been a lot of product lately from Hollywood, be it TV shows or movies (let’s include the music industry as well here) that – with few choice exceptions, the big brand movies – just doesn’t play very well in the international markets, that doesn’t get a good grip on those markets.
Of course, one can say, who the heck cares? It’s just them dumb foreigners, right? Well, considering that every, yes EVERY successful blockbuster movie makes between 60-70 percent of its overall revenue from the foreign countries, one maybe should care a little bit more.
The way some of those movies are made now reminds me a little bit of that Oprah Winfrey story from a few years back. And it sounds like a joke, but it was widely reported at the time, and even if it wasn’t true, it nonetheless would serve to illustrate the point. So, Oprah Winfrey is in Paris, and she wants to shop at an Hermés store there. As is apparently custom, she wants to do it after hours and have the store re-open just for her. The store owner refuses and is met by a (self-)righteous huff of “Don’t you know WHO I AM?” To which he apparently replied, “Non, Madame, I do not, nor do I particularly care…”
(ah, the French
Can there be any other who can be polite and rude at the same time?)
Just because somebody is BIG in the US doesn’t mean (not anymore) that the rest of the markets care, or at least care enough to open stores… or wallets for them.
Are you obsessed with Saw? You don’t miss any opportunity to trash it. Maybe it’s too revolting for your tastes but obviously many think it’s good and i agree with them: it somehow manages to be more than just a torture porn flick like you critics call it. I f you want torture porn then go see Hostel
A bunch people walked out of PRIDE & GLORY last night during the scene involving the baby and the iron.
It’s essentially We Own the Night 2. Worth a rental though.
“Increasingly repulsive to teen women”? When I was at a theater last night, there were so many teen females waiting in line for Saw V that I thought it was the line for HSM3.
Pride and Glory was shot in early 2006. Almost three years ago. Any ideas why its taken so long to come the screen? Guessing it may have something to do with Norton.
Ok I saw it last night, amazing, and such a fun theatre experience. Everyone was in the aisles dancing and singing, I guess everyone got the soundtrack and memorized all the songs way before the movie even came out.
I will probably go see it again on Sunday.
HSM1 and HSM2 were free to watch in repeats since they were on TV. With movies now costing $10-11 due to theater owner greed, HSM3 will be getting a lot less repeats.
If the hype about “Twilight” was real, the grosses it would pull would look like HSM3.
But since it isn’t, it won’t.
Hundreds of Internet comments on websites gushing about “Twilight” doesn’t equal even once cent in box office gross. When it comes to the Internet, there is often an inverse relationship between fanboy/girl hype and actual box office gross. See “Snakes on a Plane,” “Grindhouse,” etc.
“Watchmen” doesn’t look too hot, either. Except for the hardcore fans, the consensus opinion of the “Watchmen” trailer was an almost laughable “WTF?” Fans should be thankful for the lawsuit, because “Watchmen” needs as many media shout-outs as possible.
1. HSM3’s “Brief 100-minute running time”?? First of all, it is 112 minutes…without previews or commercials. and even if it WAS 100, that’s fairly standard for most non-epic movies these days. It’s not like it’s an under 90-minute film.
2. Your personal crusade against Hard-R horror films is getting old and tired. Let’s face it, YOU don’t like them, but plenty of people in the pubic do. If they are “increasingly repulsive” to people, why is it making $$? Different tastes for different people. Maybe try being professional, and keeping your personal opinions to yourself, ok?
Well, Nikki you’d be right on about “every girl and her mom” being at SHM 3. While waiting for seating for “Nightmare Before Christmas 3D”, lots of tots, teenage girls and their parents kept on flooding the theater for HSM 3 tickets.
One girl foolishly asked me what movie I was going to go see, especially since I clearly had the 3-D glasses for “Nightmare” in my hands.
Nikki, why the surprise that SAW 5 did great when IT’S HALLOWEEN!
Hello?????
And HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3 was good counter programming and it’s good to see that Disney is going back to its roots (family entertainment).
Not everyone wants to pay $10 to see some pretentious, boring drivel.
My girlfriend would LOVE to see saw. Saw is made cheap(in canada i believe) and makes all of it back, time after time, movie after movie. The movie business needs more movies with saw’s formula.
And what do you define as torture porn? Or porn rather, because they are getting tortured but, as far as I know, noone is getting fucked. Noone even got fucked and tortured in Hostel, come on Nikki, im a big reader of yours… blehhh
Ok I saw it last night, amazing, and such a fun theatre experience. Everyone was in the aisles dancing and singing, I will probably go see it again on Sunday.

So you really must have liked SAW V a lot….
I can state with a high level of confidence that there are a ton of repeat viewers for HSM3 who are not kids with parents — I was one of them, and at 22, I’m barely in Disney’s target demographic. Considering the fact that the midnight screening I attended was filled with nearly 200 20-somethings, no kids at all, and the second time I saw it, last night at 9 pm, even then it was mostly 20-somethings (a few hs kids, but not many), I’d say this film will have a longer life than many expect.
Keep in mind that kids are used to being able to watch HSM on a TV screen on the night it premieres, along with the other 4 times it replays that week, added to the repeat showings every couple of weeks after that. The fact that the film is in a theater now does not seem to hinder all of these repeat viewings, other than the cost (the fact that I have now spent 70 dollars on getting to the theater, food, and then the tickets on 2 showings of a film is a little crazy).
The first SAW was a very clever psychological thriller.
But you’re dead on about the rest – utterly pointless.
@ Harold:
The difference between “Twilight” and bombs like “Snakes on a Plane” and “Grindhouse” is that the latter two had a lot of Internet chatter but hardly anything else to motivate pople to go to the theater. Films like “Twilight”, “Watchmen” and HSM 3 have built up a massive fanbase before the movies’ production were announced (a widely popular book series, a still-popular graphic novel and two previous films on the Disney channel), giving those films a bigger advantage than SnoP or Grindhouse.
Now not every film based on a book series or TV series/movie hits it big, but if what you said actually applied in the real world, then “Dark Knight” would’ve been a big, fat bomb. The Internet campaign for that movie actually helped involve fans and increase awareness for the film (of course, it played a smaller role compared to the excellent first movie, the marketing campaigns and trailers).
So stop talking about things you know nothing about. It depends on how studios utilize the Internet to promote their movies and get people involved (and actually get butts into theaters). It varies for each movie… we’ll see in a few weeks whether your ‘prediction’ holds true for “Twilight.”
Will no one defend Nikki on the horror movie thing?
Okay then I will.
Nikki’s right about most of these movies. They are just shock-values crap that usually demeans women.
There are still some truly scary films out there and they don’t need to lop off a head to unsettle you:
THE STRANGERS
MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN (Fantastic!)
THE HOST
ROB ZOMBIE’S HALLOWEEN
Don’t back down, Nikki. I got your back.
Anyone who saw the ratings for HSM2 knew HSM3 was going to be huge, economic downturn be damned. The matinees this weekend are gong to be huge.
The real question is how leg the legs of HSM3 are. Repeats of HSM and HSM2 still do quite well on Disney Channel. But, well, that’s free.
It would’ve been nice to see a a Grudge3 this fall to take on SawV
Bravo!!!! To the brilliant mind of HSM creator Bill Borden!!!
Geez, I hope “High School Musical 3″ blasts the box office. My Walt Disney stock has been battered lately, so maybe, just maybe, Zac and company will pull it out of the doldrums.
Go, tweens, go!
Oh and no surprise PRIDE AND GLORY is dying a silent death considering it gathered the stench of death during its two long years spent sitting on the shelf.
Edward Norton opened The Incredible Hulk to the tune of 55 million! And that was without doing any publicity for it because he was so bitter at Marvel for whittling out all of the substance for the sake of shoehorning more showtimes in per screen. He’s always going to work steadily even if he’s an egotistical pain in the ass behind the scenes because he’s one of the most respected actors around talent-wise. I heard him on the radio saying that Pride & Glory was one to see so I’m not going to let the bad box office and rotten-lopsided tomatometer deter me; by the way in the same interview he more or less confirmed that the theatrical Hulk cut was a POS so it’s not like he said P&G was worth checking out just to blow smoke up peoples’ you know whats.
Nikki, what’s the last horror movie you liked?
I always suspect people who throw around the term “torture porn” have not actually seen most of the movies they’re talking about. It’s as though they actually believe it’s two hours of watching people get tortured without regard to story, character, theme, etc. I’ve seen the first “Saw” movie and thought it was neither great nor terrible. It was certainly more clever than most horror movies.
Whether or not women like seeing them on date night is irrelevant. They clearly go whether they like it or not. Maybe you need to encourage women not to continue going to movies to please their significant others rather than wasting your breath railing at Hollywood for a blatant cash grab.
Why should anyone defend Nikki on her incredibly wrong-headed attacks of the SAW franchise? We all know she’s a good reporter on most subjects, but when she has a bias about something, she has a very hard time seeing past it. (Anyone remember her propping up the flop THE WOMEN?) The fact is the SAW franchise makes alot of money so they must be tapping into some audience consistently. They are better than average horror films, not sexist “torture porn” movies. I would at least respect Nikki’s position if she took the time to see these films rather than just condemn them from a position of ignorance.

…ummm, in MMT they DID literally lop off a head (among other gory scenes).
Nice try, though.
W sank like Stone?
Who knew. NIXON cost $55 million in ‘95 and made $13 million. ALEXANDER tanked. Oliver Stone is the last person on earth anyone would turn to for historical accuracy and credibility.
And yet W got made and released. How? What Hollywood moron would invest in that? No one. Stone financed his hit job with Chinese money. Maybe Stone’s next movie can be a conspiracy picture about the CIA trying to bankrupt China by using their money to finance Hollywood propaganda bombs.
You people in Hollywood simply have no idea how many out here in the hinterland despise and loath the leftists in Hollywood. Since 90% of your city are socialists, Marxists, traitors, appeasers, pacifists, hedonists, and America haters, except, of course, you don’t hate the American dollar, a strong detest for you and your movies has grown out here.
When someone like Oliver Stone loses money on one of his leftists propaganda pieces, we are happy.
Keep bashing down these disgusting horror flicks, Nikki! They create depraved thoughts and feelings in young people. They’re the sort of filth that plants the seeds of future Jeffrey Dahmers and John Wayne Gacys. It’s great to see someone connected to Hollywood whose aesthetic tastes aren’t 100% corrupted.
“Everyone was in the aisles dancing and singing”
Luckily, I will be spared of witnessing such retarded behavior, because I’m not planning on seeing HSM 3. I’d rather have my teeth pulled without any anesthesia.
Disney must be really happy, though. I bet they’ve already greenlighted High School Musical 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10. It’s like their own version of the Saw franchise. Saw is about torture and HSM is a torture to watch.
CinefileX you clearly have NEVER watched a Saw film. With the exception of 5 minutes in III and an unfortunate subplot in IV (which was exacerbated on the otherwise superior DVD release) these films are completely devoid of sexualized violence.
And lets stop and think here for a moment. The vast majority of slasher films are about sexual awakening. They feature various modes and models of female sexuality and the dangers that come with each. Then in the finale, the “survivor girl” defeats the killer (usually after traveling through a yonic tunnel) and self actualizes into the ultimate version of herself.
It is of note that the audience for these films is primarily young women.
And yet you have unilaterally determined that they are “demeaning”? So what? Women are supposed to like RomComs? An entire genre dedicated to the hypothesis that women are incomplete without men?
Is it surprising a film like “W” would fade fast? Stone and Moore make these kinds of films to satisfy their liberal elite friends. We see how mainstream America treats this drek. Its those idiots who are out of touch.
Jack Brooks

Yeah sure, except for the fact that there is not a SINGLE statistic to support this. Sure, “I Spit on Your Grave” was arousing to convicts, but that is also basically the only movie ever made that doesn’t “sexy up” rape to make it palatable. And the fact of the matter is that fictitious violence is totally separate from the real thing.
Hell, teen violence began its decline in the same year that the ultra violent Doom II was released. If you wanna make a link between media and violence you could just as likely say that Doom II made people LESS violent.
Correlation without causation.
Well “W” bombs at the box office. Another anti-Bush, anti-USA movie from Hollyschmucks that will lose a ton of money. When are these Hollywood leftists going to get it….NO ONE CARES ABOUT THERE POLITICAL AGENDA!!!!!
If The Messiah, The Number One Brother, wins the presidential election, Hollywood will make damn sure the “right wing” watches its movies, by forcing them into theatres, taping their eyelids open, and making them watch lefty movies til they “get it”.
Just like in “Clockwork Orange”.
Hollywood will continue to bleed money until people begin losing their jobs and the right people come in and make entertaining films. You can start with Earnest Ed Norton. If his family wasn’t filthy rich, he wouldn’t be bombing in crappy movie after crappy movie. He’s well respected because most of the people in Hollywood are uneducated.
For those of you looking for entertainment, look outside Hollywood to foreign films or rent old movies you’ve never seen.
Aw man, I don’t want to live in a world where HSM 3 and SAW V take the top two slots at the weekend box-office!
Ultra-violence and musical numbers? *vomits*
Oliver Stone hasn’t made a good film since “Platoon.”
And that was how many years ago?
Maybe if he’d put down the coke spoon and get his head
outta his leftist ass, he could remember how to make
movies for “the people” instead of all his commie
buddies at the Polo Lounge.
Walter — you’re drinking the kool-aid pal, and you don’t even realize it.
First – 90% of Hollywood are Socialist – I laugh in your face. Probably the biggest discrepancy in wealth in the entire nation is right here in Hollywood. Yeah, there’s lot’s of millionaires. But there’s an even bigger boat load of poor people trying to make it in this business who don’t earn crap, and aren’t getting any handouts. Trust me, socialism is NOT BREATHING out here.
Traitors – Hmmm…didn’t Karl Rove actually give out an undercover CIA operatives information to the press in order to compromise her identity???? And if you’re gonna go Ayers on that – please note – OBAMA was a kid when that shit happened. I don’t care if they were drinking buddies from 95′ til today, OBAMA still never had anything to do with comprimising this nations security (which is a traitor).
Appeasers – paaa-leeeze. Mccain, circa this summer, has insiders up the wazoo saying – it’s gonna be a landslide, and not us. Let’s appease the christian right and get a nutcase on the ticket with you. Done. Palin. APPEASER.
America Haters – sorry pal, you couldn’t more off the mark here. Most people out here want to see America restored to the place it was when we were all coming up. A place of progressive thinking. Of freedoms. Rights. WE’VE LOST MORE RIGHTS in the last 8 years then we have in any presidents reign over this country. And not to mention our ECONOMY SUCKS.
WALTER – You’re close minded. All you’re doing is hating on people who are sick of the state that we’re in. And yes, we’re blaming the current administration and who the hell wouldn’t.
I am still envious of you on one thing. You’re in a better situation then me. Mccain wins, you’re happy. Obama wins, you’re better off in four years then you are now. So I’d be a little more grateful if I were you.
Go Nikki! I’m with you. These horror flicks are devoid of redeeming qualities. They are made by sickos for sickos. They negatively influence the minds of impressionable young people. They appeal to man’s baser instincts. Too bad the money used to make this garbage can’t be used for uplifting purposes. But as long as there are people our there willing to plunk down ten bucks to be grossed out, they’ll keep making them. And we’ll keep sliding a little further down the slippery slope. Don’t expect SAW lovers to care or think about such things. Their only interest is self.
Wow Nikki, you are being a little harsh on Horror flicks aren’t you? They are way better than that pop crap Disney turns out (which is the real horror, to the music industry)
Are you going to be saying the same for My Bloody Valentine and Friday the 13th? When they come out next year?
I don’t do Horror flicks, all that often.. Most of the time because the plot sucks, and the acting sucks! But at least they are more entertaining than High School Musical. *GAG*
As usual I will wait for the DVD, cheaper just to buy it than go to the movies, pay for parking, pay to get in, and pay for popcorn and coke. Sheesh a night out costs like $40.00 for two, and that’s not counting dinner.
OK, kiddies…want the real snuff?
Ever since I was 16 years old, the best way to get a gal a bit gooey was to take her to a horror flick, coitanly a drive-in movie if possible.
Something about being on edge that transfers to a woman’s level of excitement as she reacts to an all-of-a-suddie scene.
That is Mom Nature at work, so you idiots who are criitcizing the value of such entertainment, ask any 17 year old guy…and then stand back…
As long as there are hormones there will be horror & slash-n-gore garbage to feed this needy market…
Matt C:
Hold me accountable for my “Twilight” and “Watchmen” predictions, but be reasonable.
I think “Twilight” will underperform. The production cost is under $40 million. If the overall cost stays under $60 million, the movie opens with $25 million or more, and the second weekend doesn’t drop more than 50%, it will do okay. Only one of those three things is likely to happen.
“Watchmen” has a “massive” fanbase? Oh, please.
Diamond Comic Distributors is the world’s largest distributor of comics in North America. About 1/4 of total comic sales are from direct market retailers that receive distribution from Diamond. These are Diamond’s Watchmen sales to those retailers in 2008:
01/2008 – 2,601
02/2008 – 1,806
03/2008 – 2,075
04/2008 – 3,115
05/2008 – 2,383
06/2008 – 3,213
07/2008 – 19,104 (confusing trailer released)
08/2008 – 43,370
09/2008 – 8,133
This equates to about 330,000 sales so far in 2008 which is over three times the total sales in 2007 and almost 15 times the total sales for Watchmen in an average year. In July and August 2008, DC printed one million Watchmen copies.
What can we learn from this?
1. Even when graphic novel sales are great, they’re still relatively low.
2. DC is not immune to its own hype. It printed one million copies of Watchmen because of demand resulting from the trailer. Demand that began to dissipate significantly in September 2008.
When you write “we’ll see in a few weeks whether your ‘prediction’ holds true for Twilight,” I would agree that attention should be paid to the grosses for that movie.
Because Watchmen isn’t beating that number.
Oh, look! Even Watchmen-friendly sites are beginning to express doubts – http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=15&id=61133 .
I don’t agree with all of those reasons in that article, but a lack of familiarity (hurts generally), a lot of exposition (hurts foreign sales), and long runtime (hurts grosses) are all valid.
After ripping on Ebert for reviewing a film he didn’t watch in its entirety, it’s a bit hypocritical to call Saw V “(a) revolting torture porn gorefest” and “crap” — unless, that is, you actually saw it?
Personally, I think HSM is far more revolting, gruesome and scary than any horror movie could ever be.
Well, “W” may not have done well here, but that’s okay…maybe it will do better with our enlightened friends in Europe. Soon our “O” will be in the “WH” and the revolution will begin! If Stone makes a movie about “O” in 2012, I bet it rivals the top records.
Nikki, although I haven’t read your rants on horror films, I agree with you that they are bad…and serve to inspire those who are sick among us, thusly harming our society as whole–in one way, or another, it manifests. Although most people don’t act on what they see in movies, many do…just look at all the people who are attracted to the porn industry and copy the acts that they see in those films…and I can’t say that I haven’t been influenced by the latter in my sexuality…the truth is I have, and it is hard to unring the bell once you see it??? But I digress, back to the subject at hand.
In regard to horror films or graphic violence in general, I have no interest in blood and guts gore, on screen, or off…as I am a non-violent person. However, I have written several scripts, all spec…and none have made it to the screen, or even to an agent’s desk, still among them, is a fully completed script for a scary movie, and another, lost through a computer crash midway…some years ago. I wrote them because they are cheap to produce with high profit potential, something most producers or studios would be quickly interested in; still, I wanted something more, something better.
In terms of my latest full script, it plays on scares, but I wrote it to steer away from the blood and guts gore fair, although it is implied, it is not shown, the implication of violence being far scarier and more dramatic. I am a big fan of Rod Serling, the creator of the Twilight Zone, and the most frightening writer of all time, as he could scare you with shadows…and a play on the unknown. The scares were often generated in our, the viewers’…collective minds, Serling just provided the breadcrumbs for us to follow our own inborn psychological prejudices and impulses, which often proved wrong, and we, the audience, became the villains, or the fools of the piece…even those whom are intelligent among us. His works were about smart suspense, and the big “I didn’t see it coming!!!” story twists. All this, absent the chronic misogyny…and sex and pornography dressed as violence, as seen in modern television and films. That is how I write, like Serling, and how I hope any films that I may be fortunate enough to be involved with or make, including in the suspense/fright genre, would be executed, in the most responsible fashion…as scary films that avoid all of the blood, guts and rape that populate todays films and tv series, the latter, forced sex (rape), often transposed as slashings and torture scenes targeting women, and or, children!!!
I’d rather press for more toward fantasy and thriller elements, like classic fair from the 30s and 40s, or even my favorite of the master works, a television series, again, that being Rod Serling’s original Twilight Zone–not the irresponsible Horror, Gore, and Torture Porn trash that has been produced over the last 35 plus years…which, as I said before, only serve to give sick minds ideas…not that they don’t have sick ideas of their own, but we don’t need to give them something extra…that they haven’t already thought of yet!!!
With all of the continued advertising and raving reviews,it is great to see the Results of the pitiful box office receipts of W. Who really cares about seeing our President whom has kept this great nation safe these last years get hammered. The libs that want to see it are still waiting at home for their free tickets.
And what about that idiot Bill Maher and his movie Rigulusosy? We also had to suffer through his continued advertising and it also BOMBED.
Oh Well.
She’s right. It is the degenerate generation, and they love their degenerateness. Give them gore and violence and rape and murder and torture, and they are like pigs in mud.
Cornelius, I cannot relate to your comments. In fact, I am disturbed by them. Maybe I am not enlightened; I guess I’m just a traditional American. Movies like “W” don’t do it for me…
58% isn’t a horrible drop. Moreover, W was #2 Monday through Thursday, suggesting it’s less a date movie than a go-with-a-pal movie. I wouldn’t write it off just yet.
Oh, and Nick: it’s “their,” not “there.” Another fine example of a Republican education!
I took my kids to see HSM3 on Friday and I loved it! I haven’t been to a movie in ages. Who knew popcorn and a coke would be $17?
You people need to lay off of Stone and “W”. My God, how is it supposed to top the box office when it competes against blockbusters like “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” and “The secret life of bees”.
W=Yawn
Stone=hack

Ok I saw it last night, amazing, and such a fun theatre experience. Everyone was in the aisles dancing and singing, I guess everyone got the soundtrack and memorized all the songs way before the movie even came out.
I will probably go see it again on Sunday.

I bet if somebody would make a pro-Bush/American movie, it would be No.1 for a long time. Everyone says they hate all the bickering between the political parties, so a unifying American movie, one that would allow the American people to be proud of what our troops have accomplished, would be a hit.
I remember being (and still am) proud of President Bush when he walked out to the pitchers mound in Yankee Stadium to throw out the first pitch in 2001. I remember thinking this guy has a backbone of steel. Nobody was sure if there would be another attack that close to 9/11, especially with a big American crowd gathered together like that. I thought WOW that is a great leader. Not afraid…the man is awesome. He hasn’t let another attack like that happen by keeping the terrorists busy fighting on their shores. B.O. scares me because he will cut spending on the military and weaken us as a nation. The man is dangerous and shouldn’t even be in the Senate. His tax plan sucks too. Has anyone out there ever received a job from a poor person? Companies/Corporations/Businesses create jobs! When you tax them and they can’t make money, they’re going to cut jobs. They need tax breaks as much as anybody.

Can I play? :- )
If you’re going to begin a sentence with a number, you never write the number mathematically.
And your last “sentence” has no verb.
Keep sneering at others’ grammar, though, hon’. The liberal mindset runs on this unjustified-condescension clean fuel.
The Saw movies thrive on people’s fascination with death, how someone dies, and what you would do knowing that you could be facing the final minutes of your life. HSM 3 thrives on the exact opposite. Life is great! Life is rewarding! Life is a celebration! If you have to put down the uplifting themes from HSM3 in order to feel good about paying money to see implied horrific death sequences, then you are more disturbed by this than you care to admit. One film does not have to be bad in order for the other to have its merits.
I saw Changeling today at the Arclight in Hollywood. 3:30pm Saturday matinee and the place was practically sold out. Audience seemed to enjoy the film a lot too, I hope it makes good money when it gets released wide on the 31st. Seems to be doing fine so far considering how limited of a release it is. Great film, one of Eastwood’s best in my opinion. Highly recommended.
CADAVRA, YOU ARE AN IDIOT LIBERAL…THANKS FOR THE GRAMMAR LESSON…LISTEN UP, W CRASHED, YOU ARE AN IDIOT AND SO IS THE OBAMA/BIDEN TICKET!!!
“Oh, and Nick: it’s “their,” not “there.” Another fine example of a Republican education!”
Actually that would be another fine example of Democrat education since the majority of teachers and professors are Democrats and the Teachers Union is a VERY Democrat leaning institution.
Way to go.
“Harold”
I am really rooting for “Watchmen” but your analysis feels really bullet-proof, dude
“Watchmen” is a great book but it falls into that category of novel that cannot have justice done to it in 2 or even 3 hours. It always felt like a 6 hour mini series to me on Sci Fi (like “Taken”) I’m hoping the film will get people to buy this excellent tome.
Still, I like your style.
Also, Nikki is still right about the horror films. You “Saw” lovers don’t get that this tired ass franchise is like the low budget generic soda machine at Vons. Cheap, convenient but filled with crap.
Chew on that one suckas!
W is a flop. Thank God. Another leftist Hollywood movie with an agenda goes down in smoke.
Hollywood left just won’t get it. The public is sick and tired of anti American left.
Look, the Saw series is called torture porn because it’s got a laughable set of “plots,” and you know damn well that most of the teenage boys going to see it are going for the gore, not the scintillating dialogue. It’s the new Nightmare on Elm street series, but with more fake blood.
And three cheers to JAUN, who reminds us all that typing in capital letters is a surefire sign of intellectual rigour and well reasoned thought!
So Stone used Chinese money to make W. The film may not make much money in the USA but it may be played in theatres around the world, coloring peoples view of Bush and the USA.
Does this make Stone a propagandist for China.
I wonder if Fidel paid Stone to produce and direct Commandante.
Maybe Obama can use some of his money to pay people to go to W film to boost the box office. Where else is all this money coming from that keeps going down the drain for Stone’s bomb movies? They play well in Europe, I assume. That’s why the rest of the world hates us. Thanks to this Court jester.
Half a billion spent to campaign and His brother still lives in that box.
“W” I hope stone gets the idea his movies suck. Just because one or two were ok back in 80’s doesnt mean he is in touch with american people. dont think bush is a devil like hollywood makes him out to be. i think people understand it is not his fault. he did his job. and did it well.
“Not everyone wants to pay $10 to see some pretentious, boring drivel.”
Apparently Hollywood drivel is what Americans are willing to shell out $10 to sit in a dark room forced to suck on the drivel.
Michael Moore was right Americans really are stupid, this is what happens when your brain is fried on Hollywood crack.
Are your lives so empty and hollow that you must fulfill by watching manufactured fakery of life?
Seriously people get a life instead of sitting in movie-theater loserville or on the couch-potato TV-Land; you’re all turning fat and stupid just like Michael Moore said.
Horror movies are normally not done for artistic merit. Here are a few economic realities of the movie biz:
If you’re a first time screenwriter or movie maker, horror movies are among the easiest to sell — chiefly because they readily translate into the global market. Fims like “Sideways” are great, but most of the planet will not “get” them. Movies with lots of dialog awful if you dub them, and if you subtitle them then countries with 60% illiteracy rates cannot follow the plot.
They are also cheap to produce: You do not need a $20 million star; the genre sells itself. Get a garage and a chain saw, and you’re good to go.
And they have high appeal to the teen/college date crowd, who basically want to cower in each others arms for 90 mintues.
I have no desire to see “W,” simply because it looks like another political rant rather than an attempt to understand the man.
Stone’s “JFK” was pure fiction. The Anthony Hopkins film “Nixon,” to me, didn’t feel like they captured the essence of the guy.
I love movies like the John Adams miniseries and “The Missles of October,” where you actually feel like you’re getting a glimpse of the real person. With “W,” I think you get the same rants you see on MSNBC.
Looking forward to seeing the Nixon / Frost movie now in production.

This is Nikki’s column. If you don’t like it, you are welcome NOT to read it. We don’t need your opinion and rude comments on her articles.
You guys are bloody ungrateful. She has worked hard and with dedication, in giving you guys the first-hand news and this is how you all repay her for her dedication?
Shame on you.
It figures that the younger “degeneration” likes these types of horror movies. Now, in addition to having an annoying sense of entitlement, these young idiots can now call themselves violence fanatics. Cute.
“W. fading fast” my butt. for a political docudrama to stay in the top five this long is not “fading fast”. By the way, Oliver Stone took it very easy on GWB.
Go Mojo Kojo Rove Go! I’m so sick of Hollywood and their left propaganda. I wish they’d shut up and act!!!
@ CinefileX:
Exactly where are women demeaned in the Saw series? Let’s see… in the first film, all three female victims survive. In Saw IV, a rapist suffers an incredibly brutal demise. And in Saw V, one female character is portrayed as the best player in a “Survival of the fittest” situation. The only Saw film to feature female nudity was Saw III, and we have still yet to see a single sex scene in any of the five films.
I love this liberal, white-guilt line of thinking, where anything that anyone could find even remotely offensive must be shunned. And Nikki, it’s honestly getting tired… sure, some women are losing interest in the series, but if Saw V will finish with just a few million short of Saw IV, it’s obviously not a result of women being disgusted.
surprise surprise…w. bombed…even with all the hollywood shilling around here. did peopel really think the public wanted to see this kind of drek???
so nikki are you going to post the vid of the last night’s SNL skit ripping murtha a biden a new one for blowing if for obama over the last week?
come on and be fair to both parties instead of just pouncing on palin and the repubs.
thanks if you can oblige.
My only issue with Saw V is the time of day they show the advertisements. I can’t watch anything BUT Disney or Nickelodeon if I want to avoid Saw V advertisements in primetime. I have kids and it is hard enough to fight for the TV and watch something that isn’t a cartoon, without having to quickly switch the channel away from the very graphic 30 second sound byte. I don’t care if they keep making the movies. There clearly is a market for it and horror sells, but the advertising timeslot should not be in primetime or commercials need a rating blocker IMO.
Harold:
I think your theory of Twilight doesn’t take into account whether there is anything underlying the hype. I’ve read the whole series because I like to know what my daughter’s reading. It was dreadful, but that’s not relevant. This is my admittedly apocryphal evidence: every single girl in her 9th grade class has read that series, and they adore it. Quite a few boys have read it as well. I haven’t seen this sort of enthusiasm since Harry Potter, so we’ll see who’s right!
BTW, you torture porn fans sound a bit overly sensitive. Like the people who claim to read Hustler for the articles.
Of course “W” is falling WAY off. Only the die hard radical libs wanted to see it in the first place and now that they have seen it there is nobody else interested in watching it because like most Ollie Stone movies it probably sucks.
The reason W dropped like a stone? The word of mouth among liberals is that the movie is too sympathetic to George W. Bush.
I’m not surprised ” W ” dropped like a ( Oliver ) Stone! Every leftist Bush hater saw it last week and there are really no haters left ( get it? ). Hopefully that hack Stone loses his shirt and China comes to realize that financing leftist Communist propaganda pieces or policies don’t sell in the United States. Let’s only hope that Karl Obama Marx is paying attention.
Harold, you’re retarded. Watchmen will own all this spring. Not surprised a guy like you didn’t understand it! Too intelligent, went over your head.
Oliver Stone delivers yet another piece of revisionist crap that thankfully the public has utterly dismissed. Good for you America. No doubt he and booze swilling buddy, Josh Brolin will go on a drinking binge and drive their gas guzzling SUVs into telephone poles. The Hollywood press will report and all will be forgiven because they are “artists.” Remember I told you so…
Hey, guy from German, you aren’t in touch AT all with the popularity of HSM here.
Have you seen teen magazine covers? They’ve been TOTALLY dedicated to Disney Channel stars for at least 2 years. The albums also went platinum here. So shut up because you obviously have no IDEA of how big this movie is around here.
Saw this stupid movie, left 1/3 of the way, not worth the money wait for the dvd, Dam what a waste of time and money.
HSM will have huge drops in the weeks, as evidenced ny the big Saturday drop. Also, Friday is Halloween, and all of the kiddies who wanted to see it already did.
I am extremely sick of these HSM kids.
Obama was a kid when Ayers’s terrorist organization started the crap, but he was 24 when they finally stopped.
Get your facts straight The rest of your post is just as full of errors. It is amazing how many lies one has to believe to support Obama, but there seems to be no shortage of the stupid.
Four years of Obama and you will feel differently, guaranteed.
Interesting marketing concept for Disney: In our city, 1.5 hrs outside of LA, Disney did junior high school assemblies on Friday, offering $1 tickets to HSM3 at local theatres. Just in our city that was literally thousands of tickets. I’m wondering how many more locales did this promotion?
Saw the film with daughter, age 12. She is a professional actress, and avoids “Disney acting” whenever possible (she considers herself a serious actress). But the film was fun, mindless entertainment. And at least it is clean. Have we lowered our standards? Yep.
Perhaps the success of HSM3 should spur Hollywood toward more quality family films. We’re desperate for it…desperate enough to put up with the cheesy acting and dubbed singing in HSM3. It’s not that consumers are CHOOSING poor quality. They are CHOOSING the only family entertainment available.
Imagine the success of a family-friendly film if it had QUALITY writing, an original concept, AND Disney’s marketing machine behind it. That’s worth some big $$…if only studios would spend the time to get it right.
I saw Changeling and what a superb movie. For those of you complaining about Hollywood not making quality movies any more, well go out there and see Changeling, it is the best movie that I have see this year. Whoever did casting deserves an award, the whole cast gave superb performances and Angelina has never been better. People keep comparing her acting to A Mighty Heart, I think there was more range in this movie than AMH and the audience were loudly cheering for her, they even applauded at the end of the movie, so I think the movie connected with the audience despite the subject matter.
I hope Clint continues to do movies because it is getting harder and harder to see good quality, entertaining movies these days.
The only political movie that bombed in the last weeks was An American Carol. Sorry about that.
So happy to see all the republicans whining. That’s all you have left
Nikki, I am a woman in my 20s and I don’t find SAW repulsive.
and I know plenty of high school girls who are WAY INTO horror movies and are happier watching SAW than stupid rom-com crap targeted at females.
you don’t speak for all of us female viewers, mmkay?
Oliver Stone has made some quality movies, “Platoon,”
“Any Given Sunday,”, “Talk Radio” for example.
When he tries to do politics, his essential lack of critical-mindedness comes to the fore. His stuff is brainless liberal mind-chatter, lacking in coherence or intelligence.
Anyone seeking an understanding of Stone’s “mind” should read “Case Closed” by Gerald Posner, then watch “JFK” and see how Stone haplessly swallowed numerous thoroughly debunked assassination theories.
You couldn’t drag me to an Olvier Stone or Michael Moore film. Two of the most disusting directors in America….Ever wonder if they are paid with money that does not say “In God We Trust”?
Why are so many Americans so ignorant to follow “W” as if he is a positive leader? The man has cheated on everything he has ever done. I am far from “Leftist” as the Bush supporters like to say, but it seems, using a little bit of logic, that it is obvious that W has done a terrible job in office. Simply look at the economy and the health care in this country. It is pathetic. The US is hated or laughed at by the majority of the world. You who obsess over the talent of W need to look at the reality of what has happened to this country since it was stolen by W. I am planning to see W as soon as I have my next day off work. Maybe it will push some logic into the heads of those who think W has done a good job as President. Maybe if you would actually listen to what is said by your opposition, you would see there is some logic on both sides. I know that is probably asking too much for you Bush supporters. Logic just doesn’t fit in with your thoughts/beliefs.
Haven’t been to the movies since that stupid Indiana Jones mess, but I do play an extra in Oliver’s Fairy Tale “W”,but the only reason I have not gone to see it is because I saw myself in the trailer..So WTF do I need see it for? I pretty much smelled sh’t while I was on the movie set.
Guess GW is more popular then Stones W. Someday maybe the Hollywood left will be just a unpopular.
“W” WAS TERRIBLE. Of course its gonna lose money. Stone hasnt made a good picture since Platoon.
Dear “From Germany” –
If one MUST argue, at least try to argue with numbers. It’s called research, and it has that unfortunate effect of bursting people’s fantasy bubbles. So, yes, the HSM albums went platinum in Germany.
You are absolutely correct in that.
However, since the music industry is in the crapper, not just in the US (and for those who don’t believe it, one should look at the massive 1.2 billion dollar loss by EMI), but also in Germany, they changed the rules for obtaining gold or platinum status in 2003.
A platinum is now given to albums with a generated sale of 200,000 units, downgraded from the earlier level of 300,000 units. The album for HSM peaked in the German charts at position 23, the one for HSM 2 at position 5, which obviously means the franchise has gathered momentum. However…
As I stated in the earlier post, the audience of the first-run prime time TV airing of HSM 2 was 1.9 million viewers.
Roughly 300,000 liked it enough to BUY (not torrent, not P2P, which is all for “free” and thus can only count towards PR purposes, but that is an entirely different discussion altogether) the core secondary product that spun off a FREE tv show.
In other words: 15.8 percent were willing to pay.
Let me repeat: 15.8 percent
Now let us briefly move towards the much-touted coverage in youth magazines. Even that has no bearing on the numbers, for (a) you make the assumption that the cover issues featuring the cast of HSM has a higher sell-through rate at the counter than those e.g. of the German version of “Idol”… which is not the case, incidentally. One can look up the numbers. And (b) the argument in itself is based on the notion that youth magazines have the same reach or impact that they once had.
Let us use the still highest selling youth magazine, which in Germany would be BRAVO.
1979 the weekly sold 1,830,700 units per issue.
1996: 1,400,000 units per issue. Still, not bad.
2008: 442,967 units per issue.
In other words: sell-through FELL by 68,4 percent in a bit more than a decade. One can barely call them a gauge of youth culture anymore, they have become largely irrelevant.
Obviously, one must take into account newer media that partially makes up for those print magazines, after all, we ARE having this discussion on a message board, right? But those numbers are much harder to quantify, obviously, in terms of how they might/would translate into a sale.
Now, each number itself doesn’t stand for much. But if one combines them in a coherent extrapolation of HSM 3 chances on the German market, even with repeat viewings by hardcore fans…
.. which would be quantifiable by 300,000 + X, since we can use the sales basis of the albums as our foundation, we might look at a potential ticket sales number of perhaps 750,000 to 900,000. For the sake of the argument, let’s use the higher number. Factor that by the average ticket price of roughly 8 Euro, we are looking at a theatre revenue of 7,2 million Euro.
Which, all things considered, is not a bad number for a relatively cheaply produced movie, but it is by no means a huge phenomenon by the standards of the German marketplace.
The movie W. was not just about G.Bush. It had
a lot to do with the people around him that affected his decisions. Whether you disagree with the movie or not, I think the movie provided a fair assessment of how we ended up where we are today.
How is it possible to target a movie to females is men and women are equal. Is there some kind of stereo type at work. I went to public school so I don’t understand how it can be possible or allowed that females prefer a certain type of movie differently than males. Sounds like blatant sexism. Next you’ll be telling me that more males like sports than females.
Walter, this is a movie page so best you take your political posturing to one of the political websites. People are free to judge films with their own pocketbooks, still. But while youre way up on that soapbox, I’m still waiting for one person to tell me just one “right” they’ve lost here in the last 8 years, I can tell you one I’ve lost, the right to go to the workplace of my choosinmg and be safe there, but that was taken away from me while trying to escape the World Trade Center. Thank Heaven Oliver Stone didn’t buy all that don’t talk about 9/11 stuff and rush to role out a movie.
..altho,as a realist and political observer, and registered Dem in a red state, I am glad that we got Pres W rather than Gore and rather than Kerry but am very unhappy with him now which does NOT mean that we would’ve been any better off with G or K…can U imagine that THEY would have tried to rein in Fannie and Freddie?
About “W”-people go to the movies to be entertained which means different things to different people at different times-whether it is shocked or turned-on sexually or emotionally moved or informed.Look at what was so popular during the GREAT Depression-movies about wealthy people and comedies. And they spread the word about movies.
Stone’s movies are not well done as regards tension/plot twists-look at the anti-Nixon All the Pres Men vs Stone’s Nixon; For the same reasons SNLive hasn’t been funny for a long time…it was in it’s heyday when it was making fun of French people or TV ads or political but BALANCED.I’m still waiting for the skit where Obama sits in Wright’s church but just doesn’t hear a thing….Dave Chappelle would be able to do it..I don’t mind a joke even on me if it’s funny rather than just vitriolic-what was funny about Pailin’s husband getting their daughter pregnant?
Now that Stone laid an egg in spite of the MASSIVE buildup for “W” he has added to his track record and fewer will spend their bux on his crap until he gives us a few winners to redeem his name.
…IMHO,the Acad Awards haven’t been a good indicator of quality for a LONG time but rather Hollywood’s agenda….dear hearts, follow the money!!1977 Star Wars came on,changing many things in our life but it did NOT win best pic losing out to Annie Hall by Lefty fav-close to pedophil- Woody Allan.BTW,SW cost 11 mil.,grossed 460 mil and set a series up that grossed 4 BILLION whereas AH cost 4 mil and returned 38 mil
“W” was just another attempt by the left to help try to defeat John McCain. That’s why the timing of this so called “movie” was released just prior to the election. The movie is trash, no quality what so ever.
Alot of PR and costly ads placed on television for at least a month prior to release.
They anticipated losses for this movie, but I’m sure the leftist, marxist democrap party will cover the loses by sending money to Oliver Stone to make up his losses. Obama has alot of money since he lied and did not take public financing like he promised John McCain he would. That’s why he can outspend McCain 4-1, and with the huge difference in money, and with the entire news media working for Obama, that’s why he is ahead in this race.
As for “W” box office, here is a note from my nephew in north Houston:
“Have you seen W yet? We saw it last Monday, it wasn’t posted at the box office so we had to ask if it was playing there and it was but they won’t advertise it. Welcome to Texas!
I Saw W.. Don’t even bother people.. It is Lame..
Quote
Uh, sorry, but I find it highly unlikely that HSM 3 will at least do any domination of any kind in Germany.
To Thomas Gerhardt, sorry but the results are in. HSM3 did $6m in Germany. That’s more than the Baader Meinhoff Complex did in opening weekend. Heck, that’s more than the Disney picture Wall-E. The overseas weekend gross is $42m for over $12,000 per screen. I guess your knowledge about what is a phenomenon in Germany and elsewhere is how should I put it, auf Wiedersehen.
My friends and I saw “W” this weekend. It’s a pretty good film, and not at all a chop job on the president. I’ll admit, before seeing the movie I despised Bush, Jr., but after seeing the move I actually fee sorry for him. Not that’s progress.
When the first HSM movie was on tv. a LA times critic said it need more sexual content. Hollywood just doesn’t get it. People want sometime clean that the whole family can enjoy. Hollywood thinks with one mind.. It’s narrow minded and nasty if you disagree withit . Narrow minds are not creative. Art of any kind needs disversity.Who cares about “W” scary movies are fun and family movies are important.
Oh, you idiotic Drudge knuckler-draggers, trying to make claim about W’s drop-off when you have no real concept of what you’re talking about … sigh … when will you mouthbreathers learn? Well, never, obviously. Go check the domestic gross for AN AMERICAN CAROL and kindly slit your own fat throats. Thanks, you failures, morons, and traitors!
P.S. I love how you’re all so self-righteous on the Internet. Good for you, you wastes of flesh.
“W” is tanking?!
Maybe Stone can get a bailout from Congress.
Oliver Stone’s “W” will not recoup… That is bittersweet “good news”. On one hand, all the American liberals watched it on opening weekend, and (news flash), nobody else gives a crap about it. On the other hand, the Chinese government robbed its people of their hard-earned money to finance it in the first place.
A lot of us will not see any Oliver Stone movie because we very well know in advance that it will be propaganda. “W” came out just in time to try and influence the upcoming US elections. Oliver Stone has sadly become a propagandist like Michael Moore.
.. which would be quantifiable by 300,000 + X, since we can use the sales basis of the albums as our foundation, we might look at a potential ticket sales number of perhaps 750,000 to 900,000.
*sigh*
Sometimes, sometimes I do despair at the utter retardness of people who cannot read. The numbers for Germany for HSM 3, as reported this morning:
800,000 (!) viewers.
It falls EXACTLY in line with my prediction.
“Exactly where are women demeaned in the Saw series? Let’s see… in the first film, all three female victims survive.”
-Squirrel
Brilliant, Squirrel. You are so right. The only way to demean women is to murder them. I completely forgot that scholarly fact. I stand corrected by you oh proud member of the rodent family.
Pride & Glory — way to go Toby and New Line…
NOT!
Matt C – Snakes On A Plane never bombed…do the math!

In 4 years I’ll still feel you’re a piece of shit.
While you’re admonishing people to get their facts straight, you should start working on yours being relevant.
I used to love Hollywood I was a writer for many years and still love the old Hollywood of the 30’s 40′ todays Hollywood is CRAP took me years to figure out that being Liberal for wrong……. I cant believe these writers and directors still make this #%$%$%^$ after seeing PEOPLE DONT SEE MOVIES THAT CHEAPEN OUR COUNTRY and the actors think they are so wonderful,, spend their money on health care for the poor, feeding the poor stuff Jesus said to do… and not spend 600 million on putting a terrorist sympathizer in the White House… Im sick of it
