Los Angeles super-lawyer Pierce O'Donnell, whom Forbes once called the Perry Mason Of Hollywood, used to go after the sleazy practices of Big Media companies. He represented Art Buchwald in the Coming To America case against Paramount (described in his book Fatal Subtraction about phony studio accounting), me against Disney and News Corp (because I did my job as a journalist), and others. So what does O'Donnell do for a second act? As lead counsel for the 350,000 Hurricane Katrina victims, he goes after the U.S. government and the Army Corps of Engineers for the catastrophic flooding of New Orleans. To keep people informed about the progress of the federal case, O'Donnell has set up this website for breaking news and analysis.

Two words…Harry Shearer.
I take it he’ll be suing the corrupt local politicians who diverted money from flood protection and also home owners stupid enough to live in centuries-old flood plains?
He’s a grand-standing personal injury attorney, plain and simple. If he was really doing this for altruistic reasons, then he would do it pro bono and donate any recovered attorney fees to charity.
“Bill” is right on.
Personal injury lawyers are the absolute scum of the earth.
All lawyers are legalized gangsters, but PI lawyers are on the bottom of that food chain.
I’m no fan of Big Media or Big Government, but we know what those institutions are about. Lawyers are worse because they pretend to be driven by principle.
He doesn’t litigate for the sake of morality. Can you say “deep pockets?”
What I want to know is who will go after the lawyers? Lawyers own the system and have designed it so that it is nearly impossible to sue a lawyer. And, the cherry on top is that they are self-policed by state boards that do nothing. The foxes guarding the hen house.
Lawyers are MORE corrupt than Big Media and Big Government (which in truth are run by lawyers) combined because they own the legal system.
Our government would be much better, and might actually get things done, if we had more politicians who weren’t lawyers.
New Orleans has been tragically diminished by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The catastrophic failure of the levees was due to inferior standards set by the Army Corps of Engineers. I’m glad to hear someone is trying to hold someone – anyone – in the federal government accountable. Lincoln spoke of a “government of the people, by the people, for the people.” Someone has to speak out “for the people.” Hold them responsible! Thank you.
“Our government would be much better, and might actually get things done, if we had more politicians who weren’t lawyers.”
Comment by Lawyers are legalized gangsters
That’s a feel-good, know-nothing throwaway phrase. Take away the law (”Law-yer”, get it?) and you only have gangsters. Efficient, “get things done” people like Robert Mugabe, Hosni Mubarek, the Saudi Royal Family – to name a few operating today. History tells us of Pol Pot, ‘Papa’ Joe Stalin, Pinochet, and others for whom the rule of law was just another bug to be ground under their ‘efficient’ jackbooted regimes.
So let’s work with the law-yer dominated system we have, and try to improve the proportion of good to bad amongst the participants. Anything else, and ya might as well move to one of those ‘efficient’ places elsewhere in the world.
