I understand that NBC Universal will be making about 500 staff reductions overall, and Universal Pictures' 3% reduction amounts to 70 layoffs worldwide (including Focus Features). Affected personnel will be notified over the next few days:
Dear Colleagues,
As we strive to meet the challenges presented by the struggling economy, leaders from every department at Universal Pictures have worked hard to identify cost saving measures in many areas of our business. Those measures include scaling back on travel, overtime, consultants, premieres, conferences, newspaper marketing and general administrative costs.
While much has been accomplished to find necessary savings, we regret that we must also reduce headcount by around 3%. No company likes to have to make these kinds of decisions, and certainly we are no exception. We want to assure you that everyone has done their best to keep job cuts to an absolute minimum.
The process of communicating with those individuals whose positions are affected has begun today and will continue for the next few days.
We appreciate the effort from everyone who has participated in this difficult process.
Sincerely,
Marc Shmuger and David Linde

How many employees could keep their jobs if the executives’ golden parachute program were ended?
How many employees’ jobs could be saved if the exex would end their golden parachutes?
Merry Christmas from NBC Universal!
could at least one company wait until after the holidays to fire people?
And yet, we consider a strike?
This sucks. Anytime people lose their job it sucks.
I do wonder why this type of news is considered terrible while the news of Knight Rider or other critically-panned shows going down is shared with glee?
Every time a TV show goes down, 70 people have lost their jobs.
If these top execs, presidents and above, stopped having the studios pay for their personal FAMILY vacation plans then maybe things wouldn’t have gotten so bad. I personally know of one that took his entire family on a trip to the tune of $60K and was shocked when they questioned his expense report! How dare they? In the end the studio paid. Thats at least one great assistant’s annual salary!
The sadder part is that the top level execs will have to fly coach (the horror!) when they should just fire them and save a few million a year in salary, and maybe save 50 jobs to those that really live check to check.
Everytime a show goes down, and angel gets its wings!
What can I say?
Zucker and Silverman are Geniuses!
They still have their jobs….
These layoffs won’t fix anything…There are so many “top heavy” news shows filled with Seniors that are USELESS….why are they still working?
Just wait until Jeff Z falls from grace and gets railroaded by the GE brass…He’s never wrong…never made a mistake and is NEVER accountable for any BAD DECISIONS…and he has made most of them…
Ben is a joke; maybe he can get a re-occuring role on Entourage.
Immelt is just waiting to punce…just wait and see
Shmuger’s an asshole.
