Director Samuel Maoz's hard-hitting Israeli war movie Lebanon won the Golden Lion for best picture at the Venice film festival today. 
The film went inside a tank to focus on a young Israeli conscript during the 1982 war. "I dedicate this award to the thousands of people all over the world who, like me, come back from war safe and sound," the director told the audience at the 11-day cinema showcase. Another frontrunner, American director Todd Solondz's dark comedy Life During Wartime picked up best screenplay.
Two prominent American pictures were shut out of the festival's official jury awards -- Michael Moore's attack on corporate greed, Capitalism: A Love Story, and The Weinstein Company's The Road, which John Hillcoat adapted from Cormac McCarthy's post-apocalyptic novel. This will no doubt affect Harvey Weinstein' release plans for it. Moore's pic did receive the Leoncino d'oro Award from 26 local youths selected by the festival, but nothing from the official jury -- even though he personally came to Venice to premiere his documentary (see trailer here). So did Oliver Stone, whose South Of The Border debuted out of competition. The screening of this indictment of U.S. media's villification of Huge Chavez (trailer here) prompted the Venezuelan president to walk the red carpet alongside Stone.
Iranian video artist Shirin Neshat won the Silver Lion for best director for Women Without Men, set during Iran's foreign-backed coup in 1953. British actor Colin Firth won best actor for fashion designer Tom Ford's debut picture A Single Man based on a novel by Christopher Isherwood. Russian Ksenia Rappoport picked up the best actress award for her part in Giuseppe Capotondi's Italian competition entry La Doppia Ora. German director Fatih Akin took the special jury prize for the comedy Soul Kitchen.

Seriously? I don’t know if you realized this, but movie theaters will NOT put anything on their screens unless they make a profit from it. PERIOD. No matter what way Moore put his film out into the world, short of free downloading from the Internet (which not everybody has access to, by the way), there is NO WAY in hell that anybody could watch his films for free, even if he truly wanted people to freely view it. I’m not saying that he isn’t enjoying the profit he makes, or that he doesn’t want people to view his movie for free, I’m just saying it IS NOT POSSIBLE. It’s shit, but that’s what makes the grass greener.

In his new movie, Michael Moore simply points out the fact that we are witnessing a warning that Thomas Jefferson gave the American People over 200 years ago:
“I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.”
It’s funny that Michael Moore thinks massive handouts by big government to highly regulated banks is “capitalism”. In reality, the opposite is true. He should have titled the film, “Fascism: A Love Story”.

My investments took a small hit, but have since recovered, my house value came off an absurdley high number, but is still 11% over where i bought. and my 401ks have recovered. This was due to poor management of personal funds by BOTH investors and the financial industry. The sub-prime mortgage industry succeeded and then collapsed because individuals borrowed amounts well beyond their means to actually pay. This is not an indictment of capitalism, but a demonstration of the average Americans ignorance of financial management. Since so many folks were ignorant of investing concepts and financial management, the system collapsed under its own weight. The answer: educate yourself on the system. Don’t blame others just so that you (the people) don’t have to put forth the effort to get smarter. Was there corruption, yes. But, the ignorance of everyday folks was an equal contributor. Step away from the TV. Search the internet for more than Fantasy Football scores. Read the Financial Times or The Economist or the WSJ once in a while.
…and you forgot to mention the DECADES of greed, corruption, and complicit activity right for the White House and halls of Congress. You all can blame the private sector all you want, but policy-making, regulation, and oversight all start in Washington DC. He also said he would stop the bleed of money Medicare pays to insurance companies. I believe he used the term “enriches” insurance companies. The Advantage plans are the only current Medicare plans that do not lose money. Medicare’s only involvement with patient doctor relationship is the yearly premiums they pay and that, for the most part, comes out of monthly Social Security payments. On another point, when you voted for Obama did you really know who you were voting for? Not the change this, change that or we can do it rhetoric. I mean did you know what he really stood for? Since the press didn’t vet this guy did you? Did you bother to find out who he is and what he really stands for? From the tone of your words it seems like it’s an “us against you” thing rather than an “us” thing. I looked into this guy’s past and like my mother and grandmother always said, show me who your friends are and I’ll tell you who you are.

I disagree. I think that Moore and Stone would do fine in a tyranny, cozying up to whoever is in charge by producing propaganda movies. Someone like me is a much bigger beneficiary of capitalism. I’m able to work hard for a living and enjoy a lifestyle that is unimaginable in the history of the world. In a dictatorship there is no way that I would have such resources available to me as I have now in the middle class in the US.

Have you noticed that liberals quite often state that they are smarter than conservatives and often command us to get educated so that we will think as they do? It is really a common and consistent thread. Well, perhaps if their education included critial thinking, none of these posts on this board would appear at all. I’m not a huge Moore fan. I have one of his books and I liked his early TV documentary work, but I didn’t bother to watch his last film (Slacker Uprising) and I am only moderately interested in this new one. That said, I am VERY excited for the new Solondz. I loves me some Solondz.

What do you mean by “legislating morality”? Don’t we already legislate morality by making murder, rape, theft and many other things illegal? Don’t we do that because we think those actions are immoral? That is why many people are against abortion, because they feel that it is immoral (i.e. murder). Of course, that is not everyone’s opinion, but I’m sure there are people out there who don’t think rape, theft, or murder are immoral, either. What makes one group’s opinion of what is moral better than the other’s? If it is okay to abort a fetus, is it okay to kill a one-year-old if he/she is a financial burden on the parents and there is no one willing to adopt?

Fahrenheit 911 was Michael Moore’s last truthful movie. After its wild success his movie on health care was weak and disturbingly partisan, full of omissions and half-truths. I would imagine Captialism: A Love Story does not ring true, either. There was a time and a place for Michael Moore. That time has passed. We have moved on. At this point. his art has devolved into “shtick”. To make matters worse, he has been subsumed by the dominant culture, i.e. expensive suits, gross obesity, luxury housing. I watched his first film, Roger and Me, and thought then that what I was looking at was the anger of a young man who came from the UAW culture. When the UAW / American automobile industry were in their prime, the workers really made a good living out of it, earning several times more than the average worker did. Their standard of living was quite good. Of course the execs made much more but the little guy didn’t feel so bad by comparison because his pay was more than adequate. The crux of the matter though was the looming problem of outsourcing industrial jobs, which happened with a vengeance because of the desire for enormous revenue.
Michigan fell apart. Moore’s hatred of globalization and Wall Street developed from those days. His sense of entitlement is huge, stemming I think from the “you owe me” culture of powerful union politics, back then. Unfortunately, as we have seen everywhere in our society, unions are vulnerable for all their bombast.
As a result, Moore isn’t funny anymore, he is simply shrill.
And the USA is headed into the tank, which ain’t funny at all.

I find it interesting that the Liberals have such a problem with Drudge and those who read his site. Almost all his site does is show links to OTHER media sites, and lets the readers make up their OWN minds.
Moore, being a “documentarist”, would go a long way further in proving his points if he didn’t come out so one-sided. A good documentary states the facts with as little shading as possible, and leaves the conclusions to the viewer. Anything else is an editorial, not a documentary. Stone I have less heartburn with; I may not like his politics or the statements he tries to make overall, but he doesn’t try to dress up his opinions as “unvarnished unassailable truth”.

MM has done some good work. I have not seen the recent work to comment on, but I was unhappy with his closed mindedness to some obvious and burning questions in the last Presidential election. He is someone I expected to dig deeper and instead he chose to turn a blind eye to ways we were once again ripped off of the power of our vote. I expected him to have journalistic objectivity at a time when almost no one in the media did. Instead he apparently bought the party line and turned off his investigative powers. There was a reason a significant number of Democrats fled from the DNC; blithely labeling it all racism only shut to doors to inquiry. I had thought any doors shut to inquiry had his name written all over them.
It’s hard to listen to a multi-millionaire like Michael Moore whine about capitalism, or a film maker like Oliver Stone who utilizes the freedom of speech he has in the U.S. and Europe to tout a dictator who actively closes critical TV and Radio stations.

Moore’s movie would have done better in Russia…no, actually it would have done better 40 years ago in the USSR. Moore’s 15 minutes of fame have come and gone. His mindless followers are thinning out due to drug rehab and/or getting treatment for any number of vd’s. Moore’s movies are about as good as he looks!
I used to think Michael Moore was just a liberal moron who made stupid movies and wrote stupid books about things he really didn’t understand about the world. But now I’m starting to think he’s actually a manipulative, calculating, and conniving person who sees his fans as morons of all. This latest movie is the most blatant display of hypocrisy from him yet. Could it be? He actually doesn’t believe or buy into any of the crap he makes?? But like everyone pursuing the American dream, his ultimate goal is creating and building his own wealth, so he has found his niche this way, as a bottom feeder, by catering to the dumbest of the masses.

It is amazing that anyone would try and defend Micheal Moore. Obviously, No one has checked his facts! Lets start by checking on where he is actually from? It is not FLINT!!! He is from white bread Davison Mi! He has no idea about Flint! Davison is so proud of him they wont let him in their hall of fame no matter what! He even sued them and they won! NO Micheal Moore tribute in our school! Now he lives in Alden Michigan in his 5 mil. house! Capitalism at it’s best. Oh and by the way – GM didnt kill flint – Flint killed GM! When you can buy any part from a GM car from someone’s garage for pennies on the dollar and go to any bar in Flint and see where the employee’s are on lunch! Then they go back and build the vehicle that you haul your family around in – you should really feel secure in a GM auto. Dont get me started cause I Am from FLINT and know the real story.

I do not understand how anyone can claim to be Christian AND Republican. The two do not jive. Christianity is supposed to be about love your neighbor, treat others as you wish to be treated, blah, blah, blah. The GOP has become a nutbag (although they confuse this with tea)hate group. Despite the millions he earned through America’s capitalist system, you kinda have to feel sorry for someone like Michael Moore. To see America through his eyes must be a very sad and depressing thing.
Free enterprise is what MADE the US great. Notice that I said “free” not just capitalism. Capitalism is what the Chinese now wants NOW. After taking over Hong Kone they realized how great making money is! They are controlling it now but they realized that government is just not the best CEO for any business. They have failed and they are losing their grip on capitalism.
Free enterprise is what’s lacking in socialist countries and see where they are now. The Oligarchs in a Socialists nation want to be Capitalists but without the risk of losing their own money or even the motivation to make the business grow. They just want to run it and control it no matter how non-viable the whole set up is (eg. US Mail, Amtrak, etc.). They “KNOW” better than the capitalist who pours his own time and own money into the business that they do not care if the man invested sweat and blood. They will just take over and be in control (the hope of every progressive). What Michael Moore wants is capitalism apart from liberty! Government run manufacturing and other for profit businesses give the government the amunition to suppress the populace. Say, Cuba.
Governments do a dismal job at running any business so profitability suffers. They run into deficits so they just print money and devalue their currency which makes them not even a serious contender in the world stage. The government keep contolling the people, the people get poorer as they wait for hand outs from their venerable leaders.
Mr. Moore is a dimwit. He bashes the same system that has made him wealthy beyond belief. It is called self-loathing. Look at his girth. It is all about how angry he is at himself for his misleading and utterly stupid movies. Placing cautions tape around a building on Wall street? Really. What does it prove? Capitalism IS corrupt. All one has to do is open their eyes to see it. Hell, you have probably played a game called “Monopoly”. Monopoly is a basic training aid for a success in Capitalism. Look at it once:
The entire object of the game is to acquire wealth and property, over your opponents, eviscerating them financially (note that this IS the form of Vindictive Capitalism in play today). The ‘end game’ of Monopoly is to own all property’s and have all other players bankrupt, much the same as with most corporations and large businesses today. (See Microsoft)
Now of course, nobody thinks of this aspect while playing this game, but when you boil it down to the bottom line, this is the lesson of Monopoly.
Capitalism, answerable to the stock holders only, demands that each corporate entity strive for the least operating expenses possible and still stay competitive in their price poiunt group. However, the opportunity is always present, for the company to cheapen non-critical components and pass the product off as equal to it’s previous quality. (See Black&Decker), when the truth is the newer product is inferior to the older product and will not last nearly as long as previousy.
This kind of jostling back and forth in the corporate world can do but one thing over time. The large guy wins it all. Mom and Pop stores to smaller franchises are or will be history, and the big guy can now dictate price, availablility, and marketing area.
Doubt this? WallMart already does with with several well known products from Kelloggs and other vendors. They capture a large percentage of the products total sales, sign exclusivity agreements with the vendor, and boinggg..Wall Fart is the exclusive vendor for that product in the area Now only WalMart can carry this product, and when this is repeated with the other products we use every day, you will see why “Capitalism” has failed completely. Greed.

One needn’t watch a Michael Moore movie to understand he’s a confused, self-absorbed egomaniac with a chip on his shoulder. Moore’s statements and, what little I’ve seen of his documentation, make it obvious his bread and butter are half-truths which, by any other terms, are known as lies. It’s not that he’s dead wrong every time, it’s that he’s never really right living in that stupid gray space he proudly proclaims liberalism.

MM is and has always been vastly over rated. His work is not a true documentary but more classic propaganda. He would be comfortable at the “Ministry of Truth” spinning out propaganda.

Great documentaries let the viewer decide and are a persuasive essay of images and content. Yes editing, selective quotes can be used to further highlight behavior, but should be accurate reflection.

What’s funny is the commentary from those who are bashing Michael Moore for being a successful filmmaker. According to those people, a capitalist cannot and should not be critical of the economic and political system that apparently supports and encourages his or her exploits. To them, “capitalism” is perfect as is; no mention of the details.
Really, who are the hypocrites? The capitalist who makes something that criticizes the system – broadly or in detail – which allows him or her to make a statement and make a living? Or, the gawkers on the sidelines who haven’t witnessed the work that the capitalist has produced or produced any work that would counter the work produced by the capitalist?
Yes, Michael Moore is a successful filmmaker, by any standard. Why, in a “free country”, is that a bad thing? Why should a capitalist not do what works for him or her? A capitalist who exploits the system in order to voice the concerns of his fellow men is just as much a capitalist as the capitalist who exploits the system in order to exploit his fellow men.
Blame Michael Moore for whatever you want — but if you agree with capitalism, then you can’t blame Moore for being a capitalist. That would just be teabaggingly stupid; not to mention ignorant.

A capitalist society is the only society were a nobody can be a somebody. A socialist/communist society may have no losers, but it will also have no winners. NO WINNERS! Who wants a society were no matter how hard you try, no matter what effort you put into something, you, will NEVER succeed (rulers of the state aside). Trying to control/eradicate greed by eliminating capitalism is a lot like going after the freedoms of a woman who wants the freedom to an abortion. Yeah, the comparison’s a little strange but it’s stupid to take a womans freedoms away by trying to stop her choice. You can only, and should only, try to change her heart. Moralize with Moore. Not with me. Moore is a capitalist. Period. Personally, I don’t care for the “good” and “evil” labels. As far as I’m concerned, they’re meaningless. What I do recognize are opposing forces. I do recognize exploitation. I do recognize the difference between earning a buck and stealing a buck.
As far as I can tell, Michael Moore earns what he makes. In other words, he doesn’t create his money out of thin air like 99% of Wall Street. He makes films, people go and see them, people buy his books, and he gets paid. And while it’s possible that he is wealthy enough to be a member of the top one percent, it doesn’t automatically follow that he is a member of the club. Being wealthy doesn’t by default make one an insider.
Moore’s rant pertains to inequity. He uses “Capitalism” in the “Gordon Gecko” sense that it has come to mean for those who create money out of nothing while simultaneously destroying the lives of those who are in less advantageous positions. Like it or not, the marketplace follows closely natural laws on its own. At least that’s the theory.
What happens in the marketplace is trade. Participants exchange valued goods and services. Either one benefits or loses on the transactions that one makes. That’s simple enough. It seems fair enough. Except today the system benefits a relatively few wealthy and influential individuals, whether or not their transactions generate gains or result in losses.
In other words, these wealthy individuals have occupied positions and influenced policy that makes it nearly impossible for them to perish when the market has determined that their institutions and their instruments of transaction have become worthless. No matter how hard the wind blows — the chaff remains. The carrion feeders are not allowed to feed and the less than fortunate suffer and die in an attempt to pay off debt that cannot ever be repaid; debt that the wealthy and influential created.
The system is rigged. The losses of the less than fortunate continues to increase even though they play by the book; the book that says should they do what they are told, they will win. Of course, the book wasn’t really written to benefit those who would read it. It was written to benefit those who wrote it.
That’s what Michael Moore rants about these days. It’s not a crime, nor is it “evil”, that his rants make money the old fashioned way. Whether one wants to make money like Michael Moore or Wall Street is a matter of preference.
And anyone who can afford Madison Avenue might do well to become a client. We created the American dream and it’s been clear for a very long time that we like making money off of that too.

I’ve never understood the attacks on Moore for being fat and poorly groomed. After all, a lot of us Americans are obese. If he was thin, in-shape and didn’t look like a slob, wouldn’t he be criticized for looking so only because he can afford luxuries such as personal chefs and trainers? Wouldn’t his thinness be ridiculed as only attainable because he’s a member of the pampered liberal elite? Oddly, Moore looks completely unlike most powerful liberals.
Quit fighting about who is right and who is wrong… The fact of the matter, is Michael Moore goes off on a tangent trying to win the hearts of the working class, by interviewing them and showing their sob stories… Then he discredits bankers, and people who take out life insurance policies on “dead peasants”, then talks about how Obama will change everything, and democracy is the answer, after having someone say, democracy is two wolves and a sheep deciding what is for supper? If you need someone to spell out hypocrisy for you, there it is… If I was to make an argument about something, I wouldn’t attack it, then in my conclusion, show my support for it… That is definately what he has done in this film. Hopefully people see it for what it truly is, and quit worshipping that which is Michael Moore…
