Oscar winner Michael Moore, the prince of motion picture marketing gimmicks, announced today that he's decided to release his newest film, Slacker Uprising, for free. Moore's press release said. Slacker Uprising tracks Moore’s 62-city visits to the swing states during the 2004 Presidential election. Moore's goal four years ago when Slacker Uprising was filmed was to convince millions of non-voting "slackers” -- mostly between the ages of 18-29 -- to give voting a try. To encourage the slackers to show up, they were offered a clean change of underwear, free Ramen noodles, and a promise that no event would start before noon and no politician would be allowed to speak. These enticements filled basketball arenas and football stadiums every night on the "Slacker Uprising Tour." The 97-minute film will be available for a high-resolution, free download to any North American resident beginning on September 23 at the
pic's website, www.slackeruprising.com. The free download is being organized and distributed by Hollywood producer and progressive political activist Robert Greenwald's Brave New Films. "This is being done entirely as a gift to my fans," Moore said in his press release. "The only return any of us are hoping for is the largest turnout of young voters ever at the polls in November. I think 'Slacker Uprising' will inspire millions to get off the couch and give voting a chance." The free download will be available for 3 weeks. On October 7th, a low-cost DVD will be for sale. "In the interest of fair warning, people who are not fans of mine will not like this movie," Moore states cautiously. "This movie has way too much of me in it, and way too many tens of thousands of people liking what I'm saying. If you're a McCain fan, this film should probably be rated X." (The film is unrated, but has no sex, violence or excessive bad language, other than epithets hurled at Moore.)

Wow, what a “gift”.
The stuff that Brave New Films does is great!
Keep up the good work Robert!
You know that annoying fly that circles your plate in the nice restaurant. You keep swatting it but it keeps coming back?
So nobody thought they could make any money on this film by releasing it theatrically? Must be a stinker!
YAWN. When will Michael Moore realize he is no longer relevant?
Moore has to be one of the most morally repugnant human beings on the planet. Does the man actually have a soul? His movies are an interesting blend of propaganda, artful deception, and outright lies.
Marketing ploy…or perhaps the movie would flop if he charged people to see it so why not just give it away and make himself look like a generous person.
Although I rarely disagree with the targets Moore goes after I detest the manipulative way he does it. He has become everything he protests against and his movies have become more fiction than documentary. Many people I know are getting tired of his constant presentation of opinion as fact and selective editing that can make anyone or anything fit his agenda.
Here’s the movie I’d like to see…someone following this load around for a year and then editing the footage to make him look like a big fat hypocrite. Hey, they probably wouldn’t even need to employ his editing methods to do that.
And Moore was so confident in 2004 that he would get many, many more young people to vote by doing his across-country speaking tours – when in reality the numbers didn’t change at all.
Here we go again.
Wow! I’m surprised Michael thinks he has loyal fans. If you can’t sell it… Show it for free! I think a lot of students will understand. Michael lost what I believe was his talent for being subtle. All things being equal…
fat people use more soap.
Re: Slacker Uprising events
“No politician would ever be allowed to speak?”
WTF? Isn’t part and parcel of the voting process listening to the candidates and what they have to say about the ISSUES *BEFORE* you vote?
Not that I think any of the candidates have anything to offer other than meaningless platitudes. But rather than putting the attention on a bunch of musicians/bands (R.E.M, Joan Baez, Tom Morello, Eddie Vedder, & Steve Earle) a couple of brands (Fruit of The Loom underwear and Top Ramen noodles) and uh, oh yeah Michael Moore, Moore could have been putting attention on the issues and the candidates. You know the people whose names are actually on the ballots?
I.O.U.S.A. (a documentary on all the debt this country is stupidly and suicidally piling onto itself) is a way higher priority documentary for me and all those unregistered 18-29 year olds to see than the mildly insultingly titled ‘Slacker Nation’. Even though I might have to leave my house and pay to see I.O.U.S.A.
I just lost a whole heck of a lot of respect for Robert Greenwald. And Moore hasn’t been that great of a gadfly or a filmmaker since ‘Roger And Me’.
What a sad excuse for a documentary ‘Slacker Uprising’ is.
Let me guess is Micheal Moore doing this to deflect attention from David Zucker’s American Carol where he’s the punchbag of attention in the satire? American Carol may freak him out.
The only reason he’s doing this is because he knows it won’t make a dime in the theaters; the publicity of his first big flop would be more damaging than the publicity he hopes to get, trying to come off like he’s “doing something for the fans.” And anyway, who wants to watch a self-aggrandizing documentary about a bunch of slackers from four years ago…who didn’t do what Moore so obviously wanted them to do in the first place: vote Kerry into the White House? How timely.
Go back to your multi-million dollar New York City penthouse, Moore, and write another best-seller about how people can’t make money in this country.
So according to Mr. Mike he not only wants people to vote, he wants to convince them not to vote for McCain. There went his “public service”
Shucks, looks like I was wrong. I was sure MM’s next film would be the natural follow up to his film, ‘Sicko,’ titled ‘Diabetes.’
Whether you agree with Moore or not(I admit Im a fan) I wish people in this country would have a open ear to all ideas, both on the left and the right. If we continue to disregard every idea and opinion because of a left and right label things will never change. The solution might be right in the middle!
“a gift to my fans”? Moore’s schtick has grown tiresome, which was evidenced in the lukewarm reaction to ‘Sicko’. Nobody really cares what he thinks or feels or believes anymore. But, considering how reactionary the Hollywood power elite are, Moore is no doubt being groomed to host the 2009 Academy Awards.
Dear Hollywood,
Michael Moore comes out with another movie, hitting on a ‘flashpoint’ in our culture.
I expect the result to be the same as before; more Michael mugging before the camera, no action taken by those who watch the show.
Fahrenheit 9/11: Vacationing president is slack-jawed when country attacked. Results: War against the wrong country, no one held accountable here. Bush reelected.
Bowling For Columbine: Instead of focusing on moral lapses, blame the guns. Results: More irresponsible acts by everyone.
Sicko: American Health Care machine holds the public hostage. Results: Less health care, more erector-set meds for limps. Billions for advertising, but not one cent for preventative health care.
Slacker Uprising: Vote? For what? An over the hill war hero with his go-go boot girl vice president? An idealogical, ivory tower college prof with his entrenched old line veep? How about Nader? He’s still around and ready to be the spoiler. How about Ron Paul? Oh, wait, he wants to talk about issues. That would take some thought on the part of the person watching him.
Welcome to the faux election, fools.
The slackers won’t get off the couch until the corn chips and soda run out or the cable/internet connection is lost. They do pitch a real good hissy fit, but uprising? Hah!
LOOK at the photo. All you see is lard-asses in the front row. You think they would have got out of the house unless they were going to get a freebie for something?
Didn’t they have a billboard in Hollywood years ago that said, “When the aliens come, they’ll eat the fat people first.” We should be so lucky.
Michael Moore could be the main course.
Right wing conservative ditto-head clones HATE Moore because he’s effective, accurate and successful. That’s why they always freak out at everything he does. And their excretable attempts to replicate his schtick are pathetic.
Yeah, I’m betting he’s really terrified of “American Carol”. I’m sure that movie will be remembered in the future much more so than “Fahrenheit 911″, “Bowling for Columbine”, “Sicko”, etc. “American Carol” has been setting box office records this summer… it must be closing in on “Dark Knight” by now.
And he’s fat! Hilarious! Thank god there’s one fat liberal in the country to make fun of. God knows no Republicans are fat. I’ve been to the Mall of America and it’s just filled with fat democrats. Right.
What a surprising amount of Michael Moore hate. Sorry, he brings stuff to light that no one else does, and his “in yer face” style of “interviewing” has my support – with the exception of his Charlton Heston interview, of which I could not approve.
I can see disagreeing with his style, or refuting a factual error, but mostly the negative stuff around the ‘net focuses on hostility about his weight, or makes general or overarching assertions about his facts. The venom is particularly disturbing. Diagree with the man if you like, but take a wee look at your hate as it boils over and see what that’s about.
Personally, I like Mike’s bravery.
American Carol is a satire of the far left. I saw clips of it and it’s real funny. Like Micheal Moore getting lectured by Genarl Pattan; then he get’s slapped by Bill O’Reilly. But Zucker wanted to make a film to slap the left around. It also stars Dennis Hopper,Jon Voight,a JFK looklike. But the movie looked real fun to watch.
Mike! What was the effect of all your cheerleading for slackers? Bush was elected.
I hope this great “gift” for the American people has the same effect for John McCain.
I do agree that based on what I’ve observed about your personal habits, there probably was only one filmmaker who could have made a feature about “slackers.”
