2ND UPDATE: This joint premium TV channel announced today by Viacom, Paramount (including Paramount Vantage), MGM, and Lionsgate, in the words of one insider to me, "royally screws" Les Moonves. Because his CBS Inc's Showtime had been in protracted discussions to renew its theatrical-output deals with Paramount, MGM and Lionsgate. I'd been told that the negotiations between Moonves on one side, and Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman and Paramount boss Brad Grey on the other, had not been going well in recent months. The reason was that Moonves wanted to drastically cut the price for Paramount pics, arguing that "the pay channel world isn't what it used to be" and the value of movies on
pay TV has decreased while the importance of hot new scripted original series have increased. I'm told that, as the bargaining dragged on, the Paramount/Viacom camp, once optimistic that it would all work out, lost patience with Moonves' "hard line" and resented being lowballed. Now it looks like Les over-negotiated because Paramount, MGM and Lionsgate have found refuge thanks to Viacom. This new premium TV channel by Viacom, Paramount, MGM and Lionsgate is that old Hollywood maxim at work: Don't get mad. Get even.
"I don't think Les ever believed that we would form our own channel. Certainly we never discussed it," an insider tells me. "But then it became clear that the numbers on an economic basis makes more sense for us to own the channel and have equity. We would rather control our own destiny. So we turned a negative into a positive."
Another source told me: "Les is royally screwed. There are no studios left not spoken for. Now this new venture is a competitor to produce original programming, too. And remember that Lionsgate also produces Weeds, one of Showtime's big series." Making the situation even more awkward is that Moonves is good friends with both MGM chief Harry Sloan and Lionsgate boss Jon Feltheimer. But then half the fun of being a Hollywood mogul is being able to shiv your pals. Or your corporate colleagues.
Back in 2005 when Viacom's assets were split, Moonves took over CBS Inc including the network, the Pay TV and the TV production, radio and outdoor advertising -- while Dauman took over bigger Viacom with its high-growth cable networks and movie studio. At first CBS stock was outperforming Viacom, which finally in 2007 had a better year than CBS. (But Dauman made 56% less than Moonves last year.) Then there's parent company Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone who keeps pitting Moonves against Dauman, and that's exactly what is happening with today's announcement. After all, Redstone gave Moonves the go-ahead to compete with Viacom/Paramount by allowing CBS Inc to start its own movie production division, albeit one that Les insists will make midsize films and not big budget blockbusters. So why shouldn't turnabout be fair play? In fact, Moonves recently told reporters, "If Paramount wants to get into the television business, we'd be very respectful of that." Hmm, let's see.
UPDATE: I have some more details not in the news release below. I'm told it's still "wide open" whether the new premium TV channel will be pay TV or basic cable. "For us, that's a decision that can be made a bit down the road because we don't go on until 2009," an insider explains. "It'll be decided in the next short while." In the next week or two, the joint venture will announce its distribution partners on satellite, cable and telco, as well as who'll be running the channel. Viacom/Paramount has a huge equity position in the new channel, not just because of the size and quality of its content but also because of Viacom's immense clout in the cable business what with 133 channels. MGM and Lionsgate are much smaller equity partners. I'm told no upfront cash is changing hands. At a time when distribution is rapidly changing and Big Media is colluding more and more as the field of competition gets smaller and smaller, I agree with the opinion of this insider, "I do think it's a game-changer." Press release below:

Our prestigious and prolific libraries, diverse and commercially powerful new feature film releases and enormous television series development expertise combine to make this a formidable and uniquely compelling entertainment service from day one. This is a true next-generation premium content offering for the consumer.”

Pretty much DOA, especially if it’s fee-base (IEL pay-TV). Why bother when the lag time on movies is behind DVDs in the marketplace. And if the movies are put on this channel prior to the release of the DVDs that pretty much ends that cash flow.
Just what we need. Another channel showing re-runs of movies we can download for free. No one is going to pay for that so it’s going to have to be free. And if it’s free, it can’t have nudity and sex. Which means no one wants to see it. If I want to see a Star Trek movie I can pop in one of my Star Trek DVDs. HBO and Showtime have already hit the wall in terms of subscribers, this will be bad news for them if it goes paycable. The water is already too muddied. If Viacom wanted a platform to show movies they should have kept Showtime and rebranded it. Now that Showtime is actually doing well, Viacom has sellers remorse.
Mooves must have crapped his pants.
Sumner Redstone strikes again. Back when Les Moonves was hyping the debut of Katie Couric he took a right hook to the jaw from Sumner, with Sumner deciding to announce his firing of Tom Freston *on the same day* that Katie Couric debuted as CBS News anchor, dominating the news cycle and leaving poor Les to scratch his head. Fast forward 18 months and HBO has brand new leadership and a weak slate, Showtime sees a huge opportunity to fill the gap (especially with Showtime programming airing on CBS during the strike) and bang, another right hook from Sumner, he announces that Paramount is getting its own pay cable channel, one that will be pumped all through the MTVN. Ah well, Les did sort of ask for this one when he launched CBS Films, his ‘good friends’ Brad Grey and Philippe Dauman are settling up. Interesting to see if Carolyn Strauss ends up running the thing.
Oy. Whatever happened to good ol’ fashioned healthy competition.
This is going to be interesting to watch. Too see how it all plays out. I’m looking forward to this one. Let me add something Summer Redstone’s daughter who CEO of National Amusements came out criticized the cinema industry giants such as Regel Entertainment,AMC,Cinemark on thier mindset in Cande Naste Portfolio. She criticize them on the fact how thier own cinema houses have been losing money. Just thought I pass that onto to you NIKKI.
I’m having a psychic flash….
I predict that this new channel will start out producing original material… for about the first year.
Then it will dawn on them that the shows aren’t as big as The Sopranos in its heyday, so they’ll cancel them all and replace them with even more reruns of The Hunt for Red October, and low rent reality shows starring celebrities with crippled careers. It will all come to a nadir with “Bumfight: The Series” hosted by Gary Busey and Lindsay Lohan.
Maybe I’m just getting cynical, with all the channels these companies are creating and the content that they’re not creating to fill them.
I love to see smart people use their heads. This is a very good idea, one that would not have been brought on if greed did not exist. Money is the root of all evil, and greed is the downfall of most everyone and everything.
Good for you guys to form your own Channel. I only wish someone with more money than Exxon would do the same thing to them!!!!!!!!
Bring us good T.V.,
Chris
Just what the country needs – another pay cable channel!
What a truly stupid idea!
Right now it’s the HBO/Cinemax combo as the big dog, Showtime/TMC as the little shih tzu nipping at the big dog’s heels & Starz/Encore surviving solely on movies that the studios want for sell throughs as almost no one has Starz, so they’re forced to buy or rent any movie sold to them. Another idiocy of John Malone’s!
Companies need to be downsizing, consolidating and getting their overhead together. Not slicing the pie into smaller and smaller chunks.
One more brand campaign, one more logo bug in the corner, one more set of too-inside “all about LA” originals. Lame.
Rather than get his house in order, this strange old man Redstone plays psychological games.
Oops. Gotta go. My friend just popped up on Live. Rainbow Six Vegas, baby!
(does anyone over 50 “get” this business anymore?)
His days are numbered, just like Katie’s. (Julie Chen better not feel to comfy, either)
I’m no fan of Moonves, but he’ll have the last laugh in this power play. DVDs and on-demand have greatly diluted the market value of first-run movies on cable. Furthermore, the studios are in for a rude awakening when they pitch this channel to cable and satellite operators unless they’re willing to cut them in on a SUBSTANTIAL equity stake. And how long will this new channel stagger along before the various studio heads in this joint venture start knifing EACH OTHER in the back?
Hey maybe they will pick up Jericho?
Naw never mind hahahah
That might tick off Moonves
This is the greatest idea ever. Les Moonves doesn’t care about his viewers at all. Maybe this new channel will care. I applaud this and I hope they will bring us the very anticipated new season of Jericho that many are hoping for.
Would clueLES even recognize a “hot new scripted original series” if it smacked him? Would only purchase the channel if they did pick up Season 3 of Jericho. How unique if they could manage to come up with other quality series too.
Damn a lot of people hate Les Moonves.
This may turn out to be a good thing. If they can deliver on what they envision this venture to be. I could also see them picking up the CW network at a bargin price and reband it to show programing from the new network as well as some of the better shows they have (Supernatural, Smallville, etc.) now.
Good! Competition never hurt anybody…great American values on display.
I would love to see them pick up Jericho for seasons three and up. They’d have me if they made that deal!
This will drive Showtime into Starz’s arms (or vice-versa). With no movies on Showtime, and less-than-compelling originals on Starz, they’re an obvious fit. Plus, the two services are already sold together for one price by several distributors (see AT&T and Verizon, among others). The only question is who winds up running it — Moonves or Malone.
clueLES is such a loser..hahaha…take that for what hapened to jericho…life has twisted ways of punishing…it would be a good deal for the new channel to pick up jericho…besides the several million fans in the US the show also has a few millions all over the world..i for one am from romania….
I’m no fan of Moonves either, but Showtime is hot right now. Their original content blows HBO away (now that The Wire has finished). Going to be interesting….
I will support any TV network that brings us Season 3 of Jericho and beyond.
Witness the death throes of network television.
This royally screws Showtime. They were stuck with sucky Paramont films for a while. Now they won’t even have that. I don’t know who owns Starz but CBS is gonna have to merge or buy them to get some movie deals back or totally rebrand Showtime to all hourly and half hour programming.
A wise woman I once knew always told her kids: Be nice to people when you’re on your way up, so they won’t be nasty to you when you’re on your way down. Dear me, poor old Les Moonves; guess his momma had no words of wisdom for him. I certainly hope he’ll fade into some sort of ignominious and QUIET retirement soon, so he can stop pulling real journalists off the airwaves and replacing them with talking, highlighted heads who were out of their depth at breakfast, when arguably their viewers are half asleep anyway and wouldn’t know the difference. Two for one; the Fates have, at last, been busy!
A new channel will add more competition which is a good thing. It’d be even better if they did pick up Jericho though. =)
This will run HBO and the others out of business, I’m sure that’s the plan. Viacom has ruined all the channels on TV they own! Look what they did to TV land which was created for Classic shows from the 50’s and 60’s. It was meant to free up Nick@Nite for newer sitcoms. I have NO use for anything Viacom touches.
but correct me if i’m in the wrong about this but does either viacom or cbs own the series that are being aired on showtime anyway like dexter weeds the tudars, and would they yank them for the new network personally i’ll be glad when showtime finally dies, i’ve been stuck with this piece of crap channel for the last few months and they’ve only aired one new movie that they aired was daddy’s little girls. & have they even anounced a name for the channel yet personally i hope it’ll be on the basic tier anyway.
