So today producer Mark Canton was seen screaming at Kate Mantilini's maitre'd. "Do you know who I am? Mark Canton! You can look up my credits!" Now, I go to that restaurant all the time, and the people who work there couldn't be nicer. And I confirmed the details of what happened. The staff told me the one-time studio exec has been using Kate's to hold industry meetings, but not to eat the food. So when the eatery was full today, and Canton was between meetings, the maitre'd asked if Mark was actually going to order lunch this time around or just talk business again. That's when Canton became enraged and started making a spectacle of himself. What an asshole.

I’m part of the new guard Hollywood shitbag producers and I hold my business meetings at the Shakey’s on Olympic & Fairfax.
ok. huge asshole move. however, i have to say that canton was actually always very amicable and respectful to the waiters and waitresses at the old sony dining room back when he ran the joint.
Even when he was “mighty” everyone hated his ass.
That cracked me up. I’m gonna start taking meetings at the Pioneer Chicken now.
Hilarious stuff, New Gourd.
Mark Canton hasn’t been on the ‘mighty’ list for a mighty long time.
#1 Rule at a restaurant: Never f*@ck with the people who handle your food, otherwise you just don’t know what you are REALLY eating/drinking.
That’s why he never actually eats there.
Whatever happened to slipping the staff a little “consideration” to keep your table open and the piss off your salad? It’s the same as paying rent on an office, part of the cost of doing business.
They know who you are Mark.
You’re the freeloader.
All that money and he can’t afford an office? Or lunch?
Lol, he has some nerve. I can picture it now: “Do you know who I am?! I am Marc Canton! I have produced such classics as ‘Get Carter’ and ‘Fame.’” Ever notice how many of the actually mega players in this town dont act like that? (I.E. Ron Meyer, one of the nicest guys around)
I looked up his credits as instructed.
What has he done worth while since
Caddy Shack?
(Yeah, 300 made money, but really…..)
Woo hoo!! Hilarious!
Are we really surprised at this? We (industry folks) have seen behavior like this since we were P.A.’s. At least he used to be someone of note. The best is when random day players and wanna be producers demand special treatment.
I hope the guy was thrown into the street.
Our special today is Schadenfreude soup.
Got to love a slow news day
Is Mark Canton even still in the business? I heard he bought an Applebee’s franchise in Cerritos.
Too funny !
“Do you know who I am?! I produced JACK F’N FROST!”
This is Mr Potato Head’s town now.
Wow — he’s still kicking? The last time I heard his name I was interning at a now defunct prod company and the KLF were all over the radio.
There is probably a special place in Hell for people who rag on waiters and waitresses to demonstrate what big-shots they are. At least I hope there is …
Ahhh… This is my favorite Hollywood expression. “Do you know who I am? _________!” To which my reply always is, “Yeah, I know who you are, I just don’t give a shit. Asshole.”
They other appropriate response to, “Do you know who I am?” is “So?”
That’s hysterical and a line that must be recycled.
Oooh. Meow.
Either your source is exaggerating somewhat or they got him on a bad day (or both, maybe). I have met him and seen him out on several occasions, and he has always seemed to be a pretty good guy.
you have NOT actually met him if you think he is a “pretty good guy.” he couldn’t be a bigger jerk. there are only two possible explanations: (1) he thought he needed something from you; or (2) he was asleep at the time (AND you are not a good judge of character).
Love this kinda dirt. What goes around come around. Sometimes.
He always acted like a little prince. On the Warners lot, he used to have his assistant walk him out to his SUV behind Bldg. 80 carrying his slim metal briefcase, open the back door and place the briefcase on the back seat, then open the driver’s side door, wait for Mark to get in, then close it behind him like he was more butler or footman than assistant. A certain screenwriter who had an office nearby used to blow cigar smoke into the ventilation knowing it would go into Canton’s office and drive him bananas.
God I love this town.
Lol. Awesome.
I concur with the Bishop, having also had an office even closer to the mighty Canton for some time in the same building.
What the Bishop forgot to add is that his personal valet, er, assistant, would have to walk next to Canton in the rain, holding an umbrella over the great man, so that the much fussed remaining hairs wouldn’t fall from covering the growing baldness.
By the way, the assistant from that time, as I recall, is a mini-mogul himself these days.
Those of us outside the h wood orbit get a kick out of these stories. It is a high school caf with money !
Cue the story within the story.
LOVE that you put this up. Now maybe other Hollywood douchebags will think twice about acting that way – for fear THEY will be publicly humiliated like this. No excuse to treat other people that way. So you make movies. WHO CARES?
Here’s the thing: Everyone is doing the best they can with the light they have to see. And people like Mark Canton are missing several batteries in their flashlight. This is the best Mark can do wandering around in the dark on the emotional intelligence level. The behavior Mark exhibited at Kate Mantilini’s reflects a person with such self loathing and low self esteem that he can only feel good about himself if others bow down and treat him as the supreme king of all beings. Be glad you’re not that guy! What a miserable way to live! Unfortunately this behavior will continue until Mark embraces and empowers the inner self he keeps hidden as he points to his credits to define himself instead of by the personal passion that drove him to produce those movies in the first place.
Ah…what “inner self”?
On the upside, it does suggest some new ad copy for Kate’s:
Kate Mantilini’s: Come for the conference room, stay for the breadsticks.
GREAT RESPONSE!
Canton has had his nose pressed up against the glass his entire life.
Guy is a total knob.
“DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!”
“Of course I do, you’re the asshole who’s no longer welcome here.”
His outburst is very sad indeed.
What’s sadder? The fact that he thinks his credits are notable.
What writer, producer, director and actor in Hollywood isn’t an asshole?
P. Lee has it right. As a former waitress, I can guarantee you his food will be fucked with…that was one of the few things service people can do to get back at shitty customers like him.
I was a young’un working at an entertainment mag in the early 90s when Canton would call up ranting and raving about his coverage. Dude was head of a frakking studio and now I’m more powerful in the business than he is. It may be petty of me, but that feels really good.
No, Mark, I don’t know who you are. I didn’t see FAME. I was sick that day.
PS: I’m holding all my meetings at an Orange Dee-Lite on Ventura in Sherman Oaks. Where all the deals close.
Let me guess.
Short man.
Has elevators in his Ferragamos.
Perhaps not allowed on that Batman ride at Magic Mountain.
Ha…ha…hee…hee…heehee…HEEHEE…GUFFAW…HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!!!!!
I love these comments as much as Nikki’s article. And I love the internet for the immediacy with which bad behavior gets punished – and published. What an a–hole!
I worked in a restaurant across the street from where Mark used to work. He’d come in all the time for dinner. Total A-hole. Numerous tantrums that I can recall. I remember one time on a Friday night when he stormed out because he was 30 minutes late for a reservation and we had the balls to give his table to someone else. He always had that sense of entitlement. He was the guy who when he walked out, we would look at each other and say, “what a fucking douche.”
I love this business.
I heard that Irv Weintraub is his new assistant
i worked for him for 5 minutes in one of his incarnations in the early 2000s, and he took me out for lunch and his credit card was declined. i always remember that as very weird…maybe that’s why he’s just sitting at the tables and not ordering anything…
Hey Mark baby,
one word. Karma.
it’s always fun to watch the never was’ make fun of the has beens.
Uh, Nikki – you missed the real story here. What’s with those horrible new leather couches in the middle of the restaurant?!
He ran a studio, you guys on here never have —-
This is a cesspool of internet anger here!
It doesn’t matter if he ran a studio. We’re talking about calling someone out who has no grace. Many people have money and responsibility, and that doesn’t excuse bad behavior towards an innocent person. The fact that we all recognize that, is what makes America great.
Well said. Anytime anyone uses “Do you know who I am?” against someone who is just doing their job, they should be prepared for THIS.
Pure entertainment!! LOL – Is Canton still in this business??
Always love the, “Do you know who I am? DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM!!!??”.
To which the only response should be (and the line was once delivered on an airplane by a quick witted flight attendant) “Ladies and Gentlemen, there is a man here who is uncertain of who he is. Can someone step forward and identify him?”. It worked wonders. Guys mouth was in the shape of a skunk’s ass the rest of the flight…
Mark Canton, forever be remembered for THE LAST ACTION HERO, an infamous bomb and the Sony excesses of the mid 90s.
You go to a restaurant with a group order something for fuck’s sakes, they have a great White Chili dish.
If he’s so fucking special, why would he have to shout at an innocent person about who he is, how important he is, and ask them to look up his credits? douche.
After 26 years in the limo biz, whenever someone asks me that I always answer, “If you have to ask, then no one knows who you are”.
I worked extensively with Mark Canton. I don’t know if it’s his short stature, but he was a preening, obnoxious twit always trying to hide the fact he wasn’t very smart. In short an asshole.
I also worked with Canton. Preening? Yes. Obnoxious? Yes. Short? Yes. Not very smart? Obviously. Asshole? Most definitely.
Mark from now on please carry a printed copy of your imdb bio page listing all of your illustrious film credits. This will come in handy the next time such a thing happens. It’s very important to always have your credits with you because some waiters honestly don’t know who you are. Why can’t you be more like your brother Neil one of the nicest guys in town. Neil would never have done what you did. He’s a truly nice guy.
Okay, then, here’s my question: if Mark Canton is the poster child for Charmin — and, indeed, if so many people in this business could be on a proctologist’s Ten Best list — how can so many of them succeed even when their films don’t? What does it say about the business? (BTW, Bishop is right about the cigars. We both know the same guy).
Kate Mantilini’s has a maitre’d?
Judges scores? 10. 10. 10.
I think if I were the great great grandson of Harold Canton (founder of Canton, Ohio and Canton, Texas) I’d be pretty hard pressed when I can’t have a sit down at my fave restaurant.
Gee, didn’t you also forget Canton, China and all those Swiss cantons? I’m sure Mark Canton’s great, great, great grand appy founded those, too
I knew his dad, Arthur Canton. He was a gem and would never think of ever saying, “Do you know who I am?!” He had too much class. Too bad some of it didn’t rub off on the little guy.
If you ever find yourself saying the phrase: “Do you know who I am?!”…
1. You are without a doubt an asshole
2. Your time in the spotlight is over
3. You might want to take your overpriced overleased car and drive into the sea.
Yeah if nepotism isn’t the driving factor in this town then what are we left with? Ok his great grandaddy did some shit, what has Canton done lately?
I hold all my meetings@coffee bean, to be quite fucking honest. free wifi for the win.
300 did launch Gerard Butler’s career and made half a billion bucks worldwide, but it doesn’t give him the right to treat people like that and freeload. Restaurants were made for EATING, not MEETING.
Maybe he should print copies of his IMDB page and hand them out when he tries to get a table. OR tape it to his shirt and walk around reminding everyone how great he is.
There are so many nice folks at the top of the ladder. He should take a page out of their books.
Ugh, Chuck, nobody gives a damn about Canton, Ohio…
Except, of course, the good folks who live there…
This is LA remember? If Mr. Canton wants to be important, perhaps he should move to Canton, Ohio and find a new restaurant with which to display his pedigree.
Hey Mark Canton what is worse? articles about hated agents have more favorable comments than you do, or that you are getting flushed for yelling at a restaurant employee. p.s. character is how you behave when no one is looking.
Mark Canton’s a hack. I always use him as a punchline like in “if you ever see me at 60 years old wearing a leather jacket and yellow framed sunglasses like Canton at the SkyBar please shoot me!”
Note to self: Be really nice to the staff at restaurants. The next time they seat me next to the kitchen door, down the hall from the toilet, I shall say, “This will be great! Thanks!”. For I have been warned.
Ummm it’s Kate M. Who cares LOL. What an idiot. Money doesn’t bring class.
Everybody loves to make wood out of a fallen tree.
All I know is I ordered big time at Nate n’ Al’s after reading about Canton
I took Mark’s advice and looked up his credits in the book I have on my shelf called “Fiasco- A History Of Hollywood’s Iconic Flops”.
He makes a great appearance in the chapter on Last Action Hero, and is described as a self-agrandising glory seeking twerp.
Some choice parts:
“(Bonfire of the Vanities was) the best movie I ever saw”
“We’ve stopped overpaying. We’re making the right film at the right price.” -said just before Last Action Hero went into production.
“Next summer is the season that will make or break me. This is the big one, this is the best thing I’ve ever done.” – also said just before Last Action Hero went into production.
“Failure is not an end game – it is an almost inevitable cul-de-sac on the road to success” – said after Last Action Hero was stomped on by a little film called Jurassic Park.
Canton got the chop from Columbia not long after.
Oh – and Marc? If you’re going to brag about your credits like that, it’s best to think of how they would seem in a trailer, a la Cameron’s in the Avatar ads:
“From the producer of Godsend, Taking Lives, Trapped, Angel Eyes, Full Of It and Red Planet comes…Untitled 300 Sequel! Probably!”
It’s not really up at the Brian Grazer level, is it? More around the Randall Emmett level. And he did Rambo!
I, too, have worked with him extensively. One night on location he wanted to host a dinner party for some key cast and crew. Made a big deal about it, made sure everyone knew this was his party. Check came and it sat on the table so long I thought it would spontaneously bio-degrade. When people started drifting away for the night, I saw Canton pull the line producer aside and say “You got this, right?” He stuck the production with a $1,200 bill for “his” party.
I got another good one, too. Maybe I’ll post it later. If not, suffice to say that the guy’s a nozzle.
People are jumping on Canton because he’s an offensive asshole. This is an instant Hollywood reaction. Even in a town of lying shits, Canton stands out. He’s a kick down- kiss up hi fiving twerp.
“Do you know who I used to be?”
Mark was always nice to me when he was at UA, he always invited me to screenings & introduced me to his assistant Tina who broke my heart…
WOW, why is the hollywood community so HIGH SCHOOL? Give the guy a break. You try falling from grace, not an easy task…
It is easy to take pot shots when stories like this appear. There is a lot of pent up rage, anger and frustration in Hollywood. I also worked for Mark way back when. Like most everyone in Hollywood, he is human and not without his insecurities and shortcomings. But he also had a huge heart and was an unfailing cheerleader for the people that worked for him, his studio and his movies.
This is a thoughtful post. Mark doesn’t pick up checks. It’s annoying, to be sure. Mark is not where he used to be, because, among other things, once you lose that coveted studio seat, you won’t get another one. But Mark forges on, and somehow, some way, he gets projects made and continues working. There’s a human being involved here. What he did at the restaurant, if true, was stupid, and it may be one of many stupid actions over time. But that person has feelings, too. Hopefully, he will learn from this episode.
The feeding frenzy here makes the title of his upcoming “Pirana” movie ironic, to say the least. Have a heart, folks. It could be you some day.
I agree with your assessment but I have to ask
shouldn’t we expect Mr. Canton to remember that people around him are human too?
If the story is true, aren’t people reacting to Mr. Canton deciding that his past and present accomplishments merit special treatment where ever he decides to show his face?
That’s the weirdness behind the ‘do you know who i am?’ trick — if the person asking had any empathy and awareness of another human’s existence == they wouldn’t ask such an idiotic question.
As one out of 5 commentators who can actually have lunch in the Polo Lounge without; a) taking out yet another mortgage on my house b) having to eat ramen soup for a week to save money or c) hitting up my father, I want to say that Mark isn’t a bad guy. He never intentionally cuts people’s throats and people who know him generally want the best for him. Just because a number of you are stuck in the “mailroom” doesn’t mean he is the man who kept you there. It is most likely that you aren’t smart or hardworking enough to get your career to the point where anyone gives a shit to blog about you. Enjoy the valley!
“What profiteth a man if he gain the whole world and lose his soul?”
As I post this, I see 87 comments. Mark, I can assure you, is very happy with that. He doesn’t care who says what. The fact that 87 people took the time to rag on him, means that he still does matter. If only a few comments were posted, he would be depressed. If you don’t understand that, you are on the outside looking in when it comes to show biz.
Andy
Restaurants and bars have the right to serve and refuse service to any one.Kate’s use to be my company’s dining room. They are not faultless, I promise all of you.
I am confident there is a third side to this story and unless YOU were there and witnessed it, stop ranting.
I bumped into Mark thirty minutes prior to this junk posting on the 5th and he was as kind and engaging to me as he always is and I am a low man on this Hollywood totum pole.
Wrong he doesn’t matter. I’ve already forgotten about whats-his name.
This is hilarious! At least Canton can’t say he’s not still entertaining…
Everything that’s been said about Mark Canton here could have been said about numerous men in Hollywood, those on the way up the ladder, on top and on the downslide. But only the people on the downslide get a pile-on the likes of this.
I think I will just patent and trademark “do you know who I am”, and then just sit and get filthy rich off all these delushional d-bags.
Bulldozer, Let’s start a T-shirt business.
There’s an been an outpouring of comments not because Canton matters anymore, but because so many people loath the guy and that nearly universally he’s held in contempt. I worked with him and
can only join the chorus.
Wasn’t he the inspiration for Peter Gallagher’s Larry Levy character in “The Player?”
