No Hurt Locker. Damn you Summit!
HURT LOCKER is BEST film I have seen this year .. should get at LEAST 4 nominations .. Picture, Director, DP, Art Direction .. shame on the Academy
This list seems a little short on hits, doesn’t it?
I don’t know which it highlights more–how bad mainstream Hollywood fare has become, or how out of touch the Academy is. Could be a tossup.
But I’m thinking that a show about movies nobody’s seen, hosted by an actor half the country hates, doesn’t exactly spell “ratings magic” for next year’s Oscars broadcast.
ceemack, so according to you they should have Miley Cyrus host and nominate Gi Joe, Transformers and Twilight for best picture to get ratings ?
Good for the Oscars for not losing their prestige by nominating mainstream tripe just for ratings.
I’ve been saying that since I first looked at the list of films slated for the Fall and Winter. They have to hope Nine is impressive or that Avatar is somehow Oscar worthy or they look to another Oscar dive this year.
I actually blame the overhyped Black List for a lot of this. The specialty arms have put themselves out of business fighting for films off that list and the only thing the Black List proved is that hiring a bunch of bratty Ivy leaguers as development people is a recipe for disaster. None the films off that list except Juno have been successful at the BO and they just are not very good. I mean have you watched Lars and the Real Girl? It’s tripe.
Funny People just arrived today.
Sadly, all the voting WGA members have been given are A SERIOUS MAN and (500) DAYS OF SUMMER.
Don’t they know Screenplay Award nominations lead to best picture noms?
And the ones that send the screeners always get the awards. CRASH, NO COUNTRY, etc.
I’ve only gotten one of these. I’m WGA. Is this list referring to DGA only? Curious. Probably just one more thing the writers lost out on thanks to the strike.
The Proposal?
Really?
…REALLY?!?
Sandra Bullock just wants her Oscar… too bad she can’t act.
What?? Maybe not quite Streep, but she’s doing Romcoms for the most part. What, are you Julia Robert’s agent?
SB could be a whole lot worse and not much better. I’m gonna have to start playing the old, “Guess the Plants” game on DLH again. Last time played, the planted responses comprised about 30% of the comments.
Damn, I feel gipped as a writer. We only got A Serious Man and (500) Days of Summer and got a letter that Public Enemies was coming.
And almost all of them are already available as illegal downloads. The value of the Academy screen has plummeted. I remember, ten-or-fifteen years ago when Academy members would invite us peons over for movie night and they’d pull out that magical box of screeners and say “Take your pick.” Ooooooooohh. Now my nephew offers to get stuff that’s still in the theater (and when I was in Toronto during the Festival a few years ago, I had the strange experience of seeing the biggest stars in the world finding five dollar DVDs of their films IN COMPETITION for sale in the Kensington Market.)
It’s a new world.
Don’t forget: The Stoning of Soraya M.- the first screener of the season to come out.
Anyone have the list for WGA awards screeners sent out so far?
So far I’ve got
Funny People
500 Days Of Summer
A Serious Man
just got funny people
GO ANVIL!!!!!!!!!!!
They should have sent all the screeners out to the WGA by now. What were they thinking?
I know. I almost exclusively vote for movies for which I have a screener. It works.
Where’s–
THE HURT LOCKER
SIN NOMBRE
Sheesh!
it’s amazing how many of those movies failed to impress
The best picture Oscar should seriously go to Up. I’m sick and tired of animated films getting treated second rate. And animated films SHOULD NOT have their own category. Otherwise, Wall-E would have won best picture.
And re: Sandra Bullock. Her performance in The Blind Side was beyond outstanding and Best Actress nomination worthy.
Pirate Radio? really?
I agree. It had to be cut by 19 mins for US release to make it anything like palatable.
I’m in IA 800:
I’ve only received Funny People and a booklet on the making of Mr. Fox
We always get a ton though, so I expect several more…
Hurt Locker has to be nominated for a few. One of the best pics of the year. Taking Woodstock ? Funny people?
While it certainly is propitious to see Lone Scherfig (An Education), Jane Campion (Bright Star), Rebecca Miller (The Private Lives of Pippa Lee), Nora Ephron (Julie & Julia), Anne Fletcher (The Proposal) all considered – it is inexcusable that Kathryn Bigelow’s masterpiece, THE HURT LOCKER is not mentioned!
Only 3 women have been nominated for Best Director in the Academy’s history.
When there are more female US Senators than Hollywood female directors, something is inherently wrong. Democratic Hollywood claims to be such a liberal, and open-minded place – there is NO EXCUSE!
Enough is enough.

Gee, way to harsh whatever. WGA list stops at three so far, as mentioned. 500 Days, Serious Man, Funny People.
Sigh.
“The Proposal” was REALLY REALLY terrible. It was basically a cable TV movie with a bigger budget.
“Coco avant Chanel” is the original title of “Coco Before Chanel”. Sad that they had to dumb it down. “Coco avant Chanel” sounds much better.
Thank you.
Where is Inglourious Basterds?? The Hurt Locker??
Star trek isn’t up?I mean, I know it sounds crazy, but that movie was as critically acclaimed as anything else this year.
95$ on rottentomatos is something.

Kathryn Bigelow deserves a Harvey type push for Best Director & the film should really win for Best Picture. It’s depressing that Summit seems too busy counting their twilight money to support a remarkable piece of filmmaking.
Nikke – CORRECTION – Make sure to point out that this list is a combo of DVD’s sent to the different groups. For example, executive members vote only on best picture in the first round, so they do not receive copies of “The Blind Side” (since WB is pushing Bullock, not the picture itself). Two problems it creates: 1) your readers don’t know what category the films are being endorsed by the studios for and 2) much more importantly in the age of piracy concerns, you will have academy members worrying that they’re on the hook for DVD’s they haven’t received and which they worry might have been intercepted.
Yes, we WGAers now have three screeners, but it has nothing to do with the strike, and everything to do with the economy. Regardless, it’s a very unwise decision to not send screeners to the writers. Those are the films that get the big awards, as stated earlier.
Sandra Bullock was wonderful in THE BLIND SIDE. That film should be up there as well – a beautiful film and beautifully acted by Bullock.

THE STONING OF SORAYA M
(500) Days of Summer
COCO
Are the three I hope get some awards from that list.
First, Funny People? really? The movie should not even be considered for a nomination.. It was really boring and slow, don’t get me wrong I love Sandler, Rogen and Apatow but that movie was not even close enough to get a nom and second, Moon should get nominated. Rockwell’s performance was outstanding as well was the movie, and I am really shocked that it is not getting any credit…

The SAG nomcomm screener list varies somewhat from what’s gone to the Academy thus far.
How about a follow-up on the specific targeting of the actors, writers, and directors?
sandra bullock was kind of good early on in her career. she does her job well now but i have always thought there was something more there. she can act.

Plus: Bronson, Two Lovers, The Burning Plain, Julia, World’s Greatest Dad, Big Fan, That Evening Sun, The Lovely Bones, Up In The Air, Up, Invictus, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Inglourious Basterds, and The Last Station.
WGA list so far stops at 3.
Funny People
500 Days Of Summer
A Serious Man
The irony is there are way more that would get a vote from me if the DVD ever showed up. Julie and Julia, Up, District 9, but y’know… I need my goody bag.
The Hurt Locker is an amazing film. I was absolutely blown away when I saw it in the theater. It’s technically brilliant and you immediately feel like you’re in the middle of the action. I hope Summit doesn’t screw up the academy campaign the way they botched the release. I’ll be shocked if the film isn’t nominated for Best Picture and Kathryn Bigelow for Best Director.
MARY AND MAX. A delightful movie.
I’m WGA and have only received 500 Days of Summer. What gives?
Why don’t you pay the $8, support the industry and go see a movie instead of bitching about what screeners you haven’t received yet.
Because I’ve already paid too much in blood, sweat, tears and lost innocence.
I’m in the WGA and I just received Bruno. So I’ve got (4) so far.
1) 500 Days of Summer
2) A Serious Man
3) Funny People
4) Bruno
WGA: I just got Bruno, WTF?
I’m WGA, looking forward to Where The Wild Things Are.
I’ll exchange Brüno for that any day.
C’mon dudes! Cough it up!
where the heck is Wild Things?!
I’m WGA and I just got a new screener today: Precious. I’m still hoping for The Messenger.
I’m in the WGA and got “Public Enemies” and “It’s Complicated” yesterday
Did anyone else get an “It’s Complicated” screener with no audio? Wondering if this is a big OOPS or just a little one…
I’m WGA. Heard “Up In The Air” and “Lovely Bones” came out yesterday. Going to UPS to pick them up today.
