OSCARS ALERT: I will be live-blogging (more like live-snarking) the Academy Awards tonight. Come for the cynicism. Stay for the subversion. Add your comment. Warning: Not for the easily offended or shocked.
The people who put on the Academy Awards are in a flopsweat panic as the hours tick away before this year's big broadcast, which is having its major rehearsal and technical run-through today. For weeks now, they've been begging me and the other journalists who cover the Oscars not to trash the planning and performances for this year's telecast like we have in years past. Because their frustration and fear is that, if Sunday's top-to-bottom reworked show can't bring back viewers after 2008's sunk to its lowest ratings ever, then nothing will. And the worst part is that not even Hollywood wants to participate in the Oscars anymore.
I can report that this year's producers are privately complaining that the biggest movie stars in the world like Jack Nicholson, Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, George Clooney, and Kate Winslet gave them reasons galore -- some serious, some trivial -- for why they didn't want to present awards, once considered a huge honor. (For instance, Kidman said she couldn't appear onstage without the "right" hairdresser. George Clooney wouldn't reschedule his current visit to Darfur refugee camps in Africa. And Winslet, the Best Actress shoo-in, claimed she was too "nervous" to take it on.) One of the few bigtime actresses who didn't balk was Reese Witherspoon. These behind-the-scenes embarrassments are one reason why the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences took the unprecedented step this year of failing to make public the list of Oscar presenters. There's even talk now of bringing back those official $100,000+ Oscar baskets of expensive freebies that used to be given to the show's presenters and performers (before Uncle Sam decided to tax the giveaways) as a way to bribe Hollywood into lending its star power.
And the lack of major celebrities is one reason why the producers may finally be able to keep the show's running time to their goal of 3 hours and 15 minutes instead of the usual dragfest that has driven away TV audiences with every passing year. But, in the process, the producers lost Peter Gabriel who refused to sing his Best Original Song from Wall-E, "Down To Earth", in what he claimed was the insulting allotted time of only 65 seconds for each of the 3 tunes in a medley. The producers also have dissed last year's actor winners by deciding that France's Marion Cotillard (Best Actress for La Vie En Rose) and Spain's Javier Bardem (Best Supporting Actor for No Country For Old Men), Scotland's Tilda Swinton (Best Supporting Actress for Michael Clayton) and even England's Daniel Day-Lewis (Best Actor for There Will Be Blood) weren't big enough names to carry on the time-honored tradition of announcing this year's winners by themselves. So, I've learned, the unusual step will be taken to bring onstage from a riser 5-person groups of other Best Actor or Best Supporting Actress winners from past eras in order to add more glitz and glamor to the presentations. (Not to mention that Australia's Heath Ledger won't be picking up his Best Supporting Actor award this year.) Oh, but don't worry: last year's winners will still get to open the envelope and announce who won.
So much for this year's Academy Awards shaping up as the most international ever: AMPAS is truly concerned that Americans don't care about Bollywood's Slumdog Millionaire, the shoo-in for Best Picture, its director Danny Boyle for Best Director and other 2009 honors. Even the choice of host this year, Australia's Hugh Jackman, was intended to pump up the overseas interest in the Oscars. But on Friday, people close to the X-Men and upcoming Wolverine star still felt the need to release a viral video on YouTube of a very buff Jackman, his biceps bulging, making fun of the jokes from previous Oscar hosts as he rehearsed a song-and-dance number with a Top Hat and cane. (Oh, that'll bring the under-24 demo back in front of their TVs.)
And the fact that so many Oscar categories have been locked in since December, and therefore marquee nominees like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie locked out for months, have only added to the anxiety among organizers. They even tried, and failed, to convince celebrity publicists to bring clients around to a side entrance at the Kodak Theatre instead of onto the Red Carpet Sunday in order to keep secret what the stars would be wearing so it could be a surprise for the telecast. Like, duh, the arrivals' fashion show (this year with commentary by Project Runway's Tim Gunn) are considered by many to be the broadcast's best part.
One new idea thought up by the producers that will be seen Sunday? Trophy boys. The result is that very handsome young men will now join very beautiful young women on stage carrying out the Oscar statuettes. If that's not an acknowledgement that viewership for the Academy Awards these days is limited to only females and gays, I don't know what is.
Meanwhile, a group of online bloggers has led an audience boycott of the Oscars among the predominantly male fans of The Dark Knight because of the Academy voters' snub of the $1 billion-in-worldwide-grosses comic book caper for a Best Picture nomination and its Chris Nolan for Best Director. And that's yet another problem that hurts viewership: this year, too, the most popular movies aren't in contention for the major category Academy Awards. That drives away younger viewers. So it's little wonder that ABC in this economic freefall scrambled to drop prices for 30-second ads and replace two of the key sponsors for its Sunday broadcast, General Motors and L'Oreal. Not even the prospect of 30+ million U.S. viewers could lure advertisers who've cut their TV budgets to the bone. Prices for Oscars spots averaged $1.7 million last year, but now are going for as cheap as $1.4 million. The result is that, in a departure from tradition, parent company Walt Disney had to let its rival movie studios buy time on the telecast.
MORE LATER
The problem is, there are NO GOOD MOVIES anymore, just crap! Why would any care what wins, there is no creativity left in Hollywood, they just keep grinding out bad, bad, no…God awful movies. And who are these people? I watch the news…there are so many 15 minute-famers….and no one cares!!!! Where is the integrity, where is the creativity? Where are the real writers? I watch movies from the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. The rest…except for Peter Jackson and perhaps the Harry Potter series, doesn’t give one pause. Does anyone read the scripts? There are so many good books out there that would make remarkable films. Instead we have no-name actors in terrible movies. Enough, I am being redundant. Please, someone save us!
The wizard, there many good movies but most of them are small indie films. TDK was a good mainstream film and one of the few. Try watching The Reader. Slumdog, Wendy and Lucy or any other great smart films for grown ups. No name actors in terrible movies ?? Daniel Day Lewis is not a huge star yet is a great actor who does great films, you seriously need to watch more movies because you have no clue what you are talking about.
PS: The Dark Knight was awful; Sean Penn should be exiled from Hollywood permanently and the rest are just boring.
Do you know who cares about the Oscars and Grammys? Entertainment Reporters. That’s it. Nobody else cares in the slightest.
I can’t wait until this garbage fades away.
Your comments are so full of bitterness and envy. Pleny of peopel care about the Oscars, what it comes down to is the artists themselves, the oscars are about artists appreciating other artists. It’s not their fault your life sucks.
The fact of the matter is that Hollywood “stars” are over-hyped. I have not watched the Oscars for years….
Use to love watching the Oscars, when to stars were grateful to viewing public. Now these so called stars behave very differently to the public that allows them the perks of being famous. I say let the Oscars die and let the movie industry turn out movies. The ones that are good will do extremely well and the trash will just remain trash. Where are the Duke’s , Jimmy’s, and Katherine’s when you need them. They had class!
Yeah, it will be boring because Oscar-attending celebutards won’t bash “their guy” who currently resides in the oval office, due to their own political affiliations with him, as well as being labeled racist if they dare make a joke at his expense.
If Mickey Rourke does not get Best Actor, then we will no it’s political and rigged…and will never watch again.
Maybe I’m remembering it wrong but I didn’t think Hugh Jackman was snubbing a previous host, Letterman, but rather saying he didn’t want to get stuck with a joke that bombed. And while I personally thought the Uma/Oprah joke was funny, it’s become the most legendary joke that bombed in the history of the Awards. Partially because Letterman himself kept bringing it up for years afterward.
If no one watches who cares? ABC is bummed but those who are fans of the show or in the industry will still watch this industry award show. Why does it have to be the biggest show on Earth anyway? That’s what the World Cup is for.
WHAT is so hard about presenting at an award show? Are Jolie and Winslet that coddled and afraid to perform live for 45 seconds?! Katherine Heigl almost had a coronary up there last year. Jeez just shut up and do it!
I stopped watching the Oscars about five years ago after all the hatred spewed out by actors toward G.W. Bush and Republicans too. They can have ‘em.
Hollywood doesn’t see a need to show up, since Bush isn’t around to bash.
Here’s a thought; why not make the 2010 Oscars a Pay-Per-View event? Since academy members are the only ones that can vote and since it appears academy member’s tastes do not match the general public in any way, then let the adademy members pay their own money to watch themselves patting each other on the back.
Anybody else with any interest could tune in too. Throw in a cage match and a couple of fist fights among audience members. Ratings would soar!
“The award goes to… whoever gets to the stage first! GO!”
The Oscars are so over!!! I don’t know of anyone who watches this annual parade of narcissistic overpaid nitwits all congratulating themselves. It’s enough to make you hurl!
I haven’t been able to care about the Academy Award presentations for at least two decades. The only bits I really appreciated anyway were when winners went on forever and made asses of themselves, but when they started to shut down the sound of the winners I was out. Also, movies pretty much suck anyway and the “stars” should really run for political office rather than “act” for film. Poor ABC is stuck with the archaic and dated show.
Hollywood has totally turned me off – their politics, their product. I won’t be watching the oscars or their movies. You Tube is tons better – if I have time for that. The whole arrogant bunch bore me. Let them give their awards to each other and convince themselves they are relevant.
Don, sweetheart they are still relevant(like it or not). They make their millions, have legions of fans and their movies still make money. 2008 was the highest grossing box office year ever. Get over it.
The reason no one watches is pretty clear cut: they don’t nominate the movies the public likes. The Academy is out of touch with America. Year after year they nominate films no has seen or heard of. Maybe they are better films, but they can’t expect the prestige and viewers they had in their heyday if they don’t don’t share the sensibilities of those viewers. They keep going like this they’ll be relegated to some basic cable channel.
Hollywood no longer has any actor/actress who qualifies as a star. All the men look like hoboes and the girls look like street walkers.
No self respecting actor or actress gets in that business to be a mega star, they do it because they love acting. Only crappy actors care about being “stars”.
Year after year they give awards to each other. In recent years, the more obscure, the more anti-culture, the more degenerate, the more anti-American the actors and the picturee, as far was the useless Hollyuood trash is concered, the better. And they can’t understand why increasinly, decent Americans are turning them off. The perverts are irrelevant, and they are too full of their worthless selves to realize it.
Sorry to burst your bubble Doc but we are irrelevant, they are not. 2008 was the higest grossing box office year ever.
People are turning off awards shows because of bitterness, they have crappy lives and are tired of seeing rich people patting themselves on the back.
All these challenges could have been solved with a single addition…Billy Crystal.
Oh and maybe a few movies PEOPLE LIKED!!!!
Hollywood has become more and more divorced from the average person every year. They lecture us and tell us they are superior to us, and yet we are expected to watch their silly ceremony with movies we’ve never heard of before.
Tough s**t Hollywood—you are a joke.
Sid, only the sponsers and the producers care about crap like ratings. The actual artists care about recognizing each other’s great artistic accomplishments. Yes the general public has not heard of most of the films because most Oscar type films are smart and high brow and are indie style or artsy, the public just wants mindless crap like transformers.
The Oscars are no longer celebtrating movies. They have become a Narcissitic creation to allow Actors to celebrate their passion. If it were truly the best picture, wouldn’t it have grossed in the top 10 for the year?
Change the rules so that to be nominated, a picture must appear in 5,000 theatres (what is a good number for this?) for 2 weeks.
Any movie not qualifying will be nominated in a new category, Best limited release or Best art house film,
This will give viewers a reason to watch as they might actually have seen some of the movies. Not the limited released art flicks up for nomination this year that really only were shown in a few theaters at the end of the year just to qualify.
Just an idea.
It’s the LIBERALISM..stupid!
As an outsider to the entertainment industry, this is kinda interesting news. Personally, I don’t think the Batman movie was worthy of a Best Picture nomination.. too long. I recall while watching having the persistent question on my mind, “When is this thing ending?” Additionally, some of the action scenes were beyond ridiculous. However, kudoos to the makers of the movie for busting $1billion!
I wonder if the powers that be at the acadamy know about tevo that’s how I watch and I speed through the comercials and the song and dance crap it really is about the dresses , on Monday at work no one is going to be talking about who won what but who was in what designers clothes!!
I’m listening to this behind the scenes feed from the Spirit Awards, it’s really interesting not seeing the audience clap nor the stars accept that angel statute. ( I don’t have cable)
It’s more in-depth and intense then the award show itself. ( I saw it on cable last year)
It appears the after award interviews are really interesting then seeing someone you don’t know accept a piece of metal. Perhaps the Oscars should try that, a live feed behind the scenes, that way we can look at the free broadcast and laugh our assess off online as the stars continue to thank more people we don’t know.
Another idea, how about cameras/mikes at the Oscar bar, that way we could pretend we are drinking with the stars and pop a bottle of champagne, just for the fun of it.
I’m not gay or a woman, and the only reason I watch the Oscars is for the cleavage ( wear something revealing P. Cruz and Ms. Hayek let’s try breast feeding on ABC). So having buxom models walk out with golden orbs, no pun intended, may keep me watching past best supporting actor. Other then that since little Nicky is not going on stage this year, I see myself watching the Dark Knight, if these ***** don’t give Heath the Oscar. Which I kind of doubt they will.
Why bother to watch the Oscars? Just plain crappy liberal fare, The Constant Gardener, MILK, or whetever.
I live in Los Angeles, and I had it with the liberals – last fall I stopped buying & reading LA Times because it simply became a nauseating Glibama billboard, I don’t watch movies because they’re uniformly anti-American, and I sincerely hope that Hollywood and the Oscars will go they way NY Times went out.
And guess what? I work in the Industry and I am not the only one who watches with satisfaction Hollywood’s decline.
Prediction: Oscars confidential, this will be this show’s audience – as far as myself, I’ll tune to any weather report on the planet.
It is heartening to see that the American public is turning away from Hollywood and its self-congratulatory circle j***s such as this one.
1. Bill Condon’s Jackman/no presenters decision has already made the show boring. There should’ve been a presenters press release early Friday morning, so it could be discussed on the talk show circuit. Also: PEOPLE LIKE COMEDIANS.
2. Snubbing of The Dark Knight, Wall-E & Gran Torino was the nail in the coffin. The first two is understandable (by Oscar standards), but Gran Torino? Gun meet foot.
Too few actors, but an endless supply of celebrities. The biz is filled to the brim with former rappers turned actor and weak actors who are posing as stars. Bad actors with public bedroom pedigrees can be traced like kennel dogs, who often leave video proof of there humping talent, who figure any news is good news.
Not much acting talent of people who claim to be actors on their W-2’s.
Most of the public doesn’t know the difference between celebrity fascination and acting, but it shows up in the general disinterest at the box office and award shows. Still, they get the feeling that something is missing.
Listen, no one cares about the Oscars. The awards are given to movies that normal people couldn’t give a rat’s behind about. “Honey, it’s been a long day at work – let’s crack open a cold one, relax on the couch and watch that Doubt movie about the possible pederast priest.” Yeah, right.
Also, no one wants to watch dumb actors and actresses get up on stage and reveal their stupidity with their moronic political screeching.
Hey, Hollywood. Your box offices are dropping. Here’s a clue. Why don’t you make movies that people want to see? Straight-forward adventures, feel-good romances, well-plotted thrillers (and try to put in some good, clean heroes and heroines instead of protagonists that are just as unlikable as the antagonists).
Geez. It’s almost like all the studios (except for Pixar) are run by nitwits. Oh, that’s right. They are.
So according to you Chris, Hollywood should just make mindless low brow crap and forget about real art or good films. Sweetheart, 2008 was the higest grossing box office year ever in film history, the box office is doing well despite what you thought. And if real people didn’t care abotu actors or movies than movies wouldn;t make millions and actors wouldn’t make millions. Despite your opinion most people are fascinated with celebrity culture, get over it.
Yup, Hollywood, like the rest of this country’s culture and the mainstream media, have really gotten intolerably boring and barren of any redeeming qualities. I never even heard of most of the movies being noted this year, and aside from the Batman flick, the ones I have heard of look to be pretty much a pile of loose doo-doo.
Who the hell wants to watch the snoozefest posing as a “political statement” featuring that nutjob Sean Penn? What the hell happened with the movie industry?? Where are the actors with a presence worth projecting???
They tried pushing George Clooney for like two decades (even after he single-handedly destroyed the original Batman theatrical franchise) — he NEVER WAS the modern equivalent of Clark Gable, didn’t you producer folks know? — and it’s not that lisping little liberal sissy Matt Damon, either, nor is it the disappointing and now underwhelming and basically washed-up Tom Hanks (who could have been a true great but instead ended up an underachieving poseur), nor is it the latest spate of no-class bad-tempered crappy-personality British and Aussie imports.
We’re celebrating Mickey Rourke. Yeah. I enjoyed The Pope of Greenwich Village, that was actually a good flick. Mickey Rourke. Move over, Jack Nicholson. You too, Pacino. Outta the way, Olivier.
Maybe if the effete liberal brainless wonders in Hollywood would quit telling the rest of us how to live (while they hypocritically ignore their own advice) and quit pushing their el queero agendas and quit pronouncing the “urgency” vis-a-vis their latest sky-is-falling scams, then they might just have a little creative energy to put out something that’s actually entertaining.
But yeah, the only reason to watch the Oscars (or the movies they “celebrate,” for that matter) is if you have bad insomnia and wish to fall asleep really early for once.
Hollywood, who you kidding?
Hi there, Tom Hanks washed up ? Is this a joke ? His last film (Angels and demons) was a huge box office hit and the guy has 2 Oscars. Get over yourself.
Screw those Commie Left Hollwood Jerks! They reap what they sow. They are Unamerican!
I’ve not watched the Oscars in over twenty years. I do not care about talented actors and actresses who live in a fantasy world who dare to speak about politics. Most are so ignorant of reality that I cannot watch them without thinking about how stupid they are… not to mention so far overpaid it isn’t funny. Then there are the crappy movies, which I won’t see because of foul language, gratuitous violence or sex, and vile anti-Americanism. I’m not even going to discuss the “green” phenomenon…
Why should I tune in to a bunch of Anti-American idiots drool over Obama or bash the Republicans. The movies that have been produced, most are not worth the price of admission to a matinee, unless you are into sophistry/hiphop. Why watch an award show for this? Hollywood needs to take it’s collective head out of the sand.
These producers don’t know what they’re doing. When they try to “innovate” the Oscars to attract viewers, they screw it up. For example a few years ago when the “lesser” winners had to accept from their seats, tacky. This break from tradition where the previous winners present the awards to the new winners is a major mistake that I’m sure will be fixed next year. Just so dumb.
The mistake made every year is this notion that the audience does not want to hear the winners speak… I would cut the sappy montages and cirque de soleil “interpretations” and the horseshit and give each winner 3 minutes rather than 30 seconds. I guarantee the show would be more interesting. What has always drawn people to the Oscars is the chance to take a look inside the film industry, all the cheesing it down to a lame Vegas show is what hurts it, not the length of the show (do people skip the Superbowl because it’s too long?), not the “star-caliber” of the nominees.
And finally, those fanboys who’re boycotting over the Dark Knight- first of all they wouldn’t watch anyway because there’s no lightsaber battles onstage, but second of all they’re just dumb because The Dark Knight was not nearly one of the 5 or 10 best films of this year. It was good, but not great. The major misstep was not nominating Synecdoche, New York, which was a brilliant film.
The Academy has to face facts, the films that put bums on seats (or viewers eyes on TV screens) are totally undeserving of awards. I loved Dark Knight, but leave MTV and the People’s Choice to honor it.
To pretend the average American can recognise a decent film or a decent performance is unfortunately just not the case, so stop trying to put lipstick on a pig.
Meanwhile don’t shoot yourself in both feet by (1) giving Best Picture to such totally undeserving films as No Country, Departed (a remake for God’s sake) and Crash (2) having presenters sing or dance or (3) tinkering with the format (e.g. insulting last year’s acting winners)
Screw the Oscars and all of hollywood idiots!!!! True America Dont need any of em!!!!
I dont really care about these actors anymore. They stick their noses into things they dont know anything about, and think they are better than everyone else.
They’re not letting last year’s actor winners present this year’s actor Oscars? WTF?!?
That is one Oscar tradition they should NOT change.
do ya think it might be because of the people you are honoring….these so called celebrities are for the most part jokes…spoiled jokes…making 3rd rate movies that really nobody wants to see…bring back the likes of the stars of the past, and make movies that tell a story that people want to hear….Sean Penn..these are the reasons Hollywood is hitting bottom…nobody wants to spend american dollars watching a traitor portraying a homosexual who 99 percent of the country never heard of…..
The first generation creates it. The second generation enjoys it. The third destroys it. As we’ve seen with the newspapers, the auto companies and Network TV, so goes Hollywood. Driven by personal ambition, cloying pandering to the elite left, outspoken liberal politics and the death of the old Hollywood star system (as driven by the old line studios) the glitz and lure and fantasy of “Hollywood” is dead. Bring on Bollywood.
I stopped watching when they kept inserting their political views and started trashing the US.
Funny the article talks about “big stars” like Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Angelina Jolie…
It is precisely people like that — who are all hype and little what passes for talent these days — that have degraded cinema in general and the Oscars specifically, to the point not many care any longer.
How many of us are sick to death of sundry “stars” using the show as a rostrum for assorted, whacko political views and Global Warming spiels — a tradition started by the challenged Vanessa Redgrave.
As Paddy Chayefsky said in his rejoinder to the big-mouthed Redgrave: “A simple thank-you would have sufficed…”
Ditto that !
There is very little at the Academy Awards in the last 20 years that is worth celebrating, much less awarding the statues to.
A mere shadow and sad caricature of what was once, truly, an evening populated with bigger-than-life stars and personages.
Can I just point out – that, weeks ago, when there was such hue and cry about the SAG awards being politicized, there were some people sort of equating that with, you know, HELLO! – “the sky is blue?”
I mean, come on. Is this not yet ANOTHER sign that Hollywood is changing and that SAG actors better get their shit together and take care of each other, because these people view us as fucking props?
And yet, SAG is on the verge of laying down – and the charge to lay down is being led by – who else? – THE STARS!
Yet – READ THIS POST. You think Hollywood – the AMPTP – doesn’t NEED SAG actors?
Yes, they only REALLY need the STARS for THIS event. But the movies that were made allowing THESE people to be nominated to ATTEND this event? And get EYEBALLS to come to SEE this event on TV and therefore watch the COMMERCIALS that paid so much money to the network SHOWING this event.
The AMPTP – without SAG actors – ALL of us – is NOTHING. It is IRRELEVANT.
SAG actors have the power to DO something about this outrageous power grab and money grab – OUR MONEY – by the Greed-head -show-biz weasel suits – if we can JUST GET TOGETHER AND DEMAND OUR RIGHTS.
STOP FUCKING ARGUING AMONGST OURSELVES.
You think, SAG ALONE – standing up for the rights of the middle-class actor, won’t send these reptiles running!
Bullshit.
And imagine if we had IATSE with us?
These people may treat us with contempt and indifference in the negotiating room, but if SAG goes out, so that middle-class actors can be be given the PRIVILEGE(!) of being paid a fair wage and residual off their BILLIONS THEY MAKE off of OUR WORK?
They HAVE TO RESPOND.
And does ANYONE think – that Tom Hanks or Meryl Streep or George Clooney or ANY star is going to go anywhere NEAR crossing a SAG picket line, if we have to do that to get our rights?
They wouldn’t fucking DARE. You watch. They’re ALREADY on the middle-class actors shit-list. There’s NO wiggle room for their support if we have to walk the line – JUST NOT NOT HAVE TO ACCEPT A CONTRACT OF ROLL-BACKS AND GIVE-AWAYS BUT KEEP WHAT WE HAVE!
We can’t be paid fairly and get fair residuals because it’s a new delivery system?
BULLSHIT.
we have to dress up as cans of PLEDGE in a TV show or movie because the suits want us to hock THEIR fucking advertising?
BULLSHIT.
WE have to lose control of our right to control our OWN images, so producers can exploit it anywhere, anyway, anytime they want – AND NOT ASK OR PAY US?
BULLSHIT
Can we please be paid? Is that too much to ask?
Does anybody really care? I feel so bad for Hollywood… Reality sucks!
Big f’n deal. Who wants to hear a bunch of ungrateful, spoiled whiners give their political views. America is sick of it.
I rather watch re-runs of the Brady Bunch.
Who the hell cares about the Oscars’ anymore? Earth to Hollywood: YOU SUCK.
The New York Times is sinking fast and now it would appear that the Oscars and Hollywood itself is also fadding. Both are big havens of leftist thinking today,—–HUUMM.
Wow!! The Academy Awards used to be about American movies. America is no longer in style for the celebrities. In fact, many of these millionaires/billionaires could care less about the USA, so why should any of us care about their self absorbed lives except the ignorant parts of our population.
I actually know of several people who liked “Slumdog Millionaire.” The problem is they’re not interested in any of the other nominated films or stars.
Maybe next year the Academy could give a little thought to nominating films that people actually watched.
In a nutshell…In Hollywood’s golden years the Oscar’s were America’s and the world’s chance to get personal with their star idols. The tabloids and show’s like Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood, Insider and TMZ have destroyed the “untouchable” persona of the stars. The Academy Awards are just another award show. Without the viewership and ratings of years-gone-by the stars themselves no longer view the ceremony as sacred either. This will unfortunately just accelerate the ratings decline and perpetuate the vicious cycle.
It’s amazing how every year, Hollywood gets more and more oblivious to the reality of the new media. Their industry is so big and bloated and dim-witted, they’re like the dinosaurs on that fateful day staring up at the asteroid falling on them from the sky.. “Huh? What’s that?” Hahahahahaha! Enjoy clucking to yourselves with your moronic views of the world, because the asteroid is getting closer and closer.
It’s what they get for always snubbing the really good movies and instead giving the awards to stupid artsy-fartsy films that nobody cares about. The year that “Shakespear In Love” beat out “Saving Private Ryan” marked the beginning of my boycott of all movie awards shows.
Failure to give best picture and director nominations to The Dark Knight will result in, well…a dark night at the Oscars.
When is Hollywood going to realize that they too live in America , and make family oriented movies instead of the garbage they’ve been putting out the last 15 years? Every political and war movie is anti-American. Every other movie has a gay and/or lesbian theme or undertone. When are those idiots going to realize that it’s the “little people” who put them where they are? Also, save your political rants and beliefs for the appropriate forum; and while you’re at it, keep the acceptance speeches short. Where’s Gary Cooper when you need him?
how PATHETIC..the current incarnation of Hollywood stars, movers and shakers, and storytellers have FUCKED the golden goose. Hollywood—your days as a cultural force are OVER.
these self absorbed idiots have forgotten that the movies are a POPULIST art form…you can’t (year in and year out) make movies only for two dozen cineastes who live in Hollywood and Manhattan and expect to remain culturally relevant do you?
The Oscars used to be HOLLYWOOD’S BIG NIGHT, it was where the world came to for the dream factory…but your arrogance and STUPIDITY have manged to fuck that up
the people running the town have made the Oscars irrelevant–so in turn, YOU (hollywood) become IRRELEVANT…in two decades you’ll be what broadway is now. and the Oscars will carry as much weight as the tonys
shutting out half your paying public because of your politics is just one reason….but the product you churn out is either pieces of shit mind numbing, pre-packaged “blockbuster” movies…or “indie” movies that no one except critics and fellow Hollywood insiders can jerk off over
it’s done Hollywood….it was nice knowin ya—thanks for some of the good (and great) movies…judging from your recent output, you don’t have it in you to make a comeback
No Gran Torino=not interested
This is funny, no one cares about the Oscars, I feel very mainstream now. Every time a girl tries to make me go to a movie I always say “I will do ANYTHING but that.” There’s no way I am going to spend an hour + a half sitting thru some horrible movie. I doubt I even know who half these so-called stars getting awards are anyway, and the few I have heard of I’m sure I wish I didnt. Hollywood hates normal Americans anyway, looks like the feeling is mutual.
Given the lack of popular movie and star nominations, it would be unfair to fault the show’s production for its inevitable disappointment. Jackman could give a flawless performance delivering the best writing in the history of the ceremony and it still won’t do solid numbers. Americans just don’t care if unknowns from India or obscure television actors win awards for performances in oversized art-house films. Not one of the actor/actress nominees – save for Pitt and Ledger – are true A listers, and most of the films didn’t play well in flyover country. I’m not casting disparities on the value of this year’s art (the nominees represent some of the best film-making in a decade), but if you want big ratings, you need popular stars and movies.
” Not one of the actor/actress nominees – save for Pitt and Ledger – are true A listers, ”
Uh what ? Meryl Streep ? Kate Winslet(star of the highest grossing film ever), Sean Penn, Angelina Jolie. Those are all A listers.
They really should just go back to handing out the awards at a banquet, and maybe publicizing the highlights. The tension between the Academy rewarding good work that represents the best of “Hollywood” and rewarding what’s popular has never really been resolved, and the awards ceremony as it currently exists is really sort of a bastardization of what the founders intended.
AMPAS is just the world’s premiere commercial filmmakers’ country club, and there’s really nothing wrong with that, and they should stop whoring out the Oscar name to the Celebrity-Industrial Complex. Of course, celebrity and self promotion have always been a part of the Oscar and the Academy, but it’s striking how all of the creative decisions listed in this article are consistent with a complete refusal to recognize the creative work of artists making movies, in deference to putting as many big celebrities in front of the camera as physically possible.
People aren’t watching because it’s a grand masque of People Magazine, with some awards occasionally being handed out to people ABC doesn’t care to highlight, for recognition of work ABC doesn’t care to show.
Sorry but this issue pisses me off.
I concur with the general concensus comments. Acting has become a farce along with the scripts. Then to top this off, the elite class prance and pontificate as if they are qualified either as actors, polititians or spokes persons for their cause of the day.
Please, just burn down Hollywood and Broadway the charcoal would better serve the community!
You can always tell when The Drudge Report links to a website by the way the comments section is raided by idiots.
Oh wow, more mouthbreathers making idiotic generalizations, slinging juvenile, nonsensical crap, and generally just being their usual uneducated selves. The guy who said movies are “uniformly anti-American” would probably like to sell you his self-published pamphlet about how PAUL BLART: MALL COP is an attack on the core values of capitalism and Christianity, right?
Moreover, it is obvious from the comments many didn’t even bother to read Nikki’s article, they just wanted some excuse to puke up some of their vile stupidity.
Anyone with a 1/4 of a brain (which obviously doesn’t include some of the folks commenting here, who have enough trouble making up for their lack of thumbs) knows the Oscars are and have been shifting more and more towards a less mainstream television forum … not unlike a lot of other high profile events/awards.
Nikki, can’t you put some sort of Drudge idiot filter on these comments?
The reason why the Oscar will tank is because they pick movies that only they care about and it’s getting worse and worse.
I doubt that the show really has been reworked from top to bottom (especially if trophy boys is considered a newsworthy addition) but the bigger issue is: if most average Americans don’t know that you’ve reworked it, why would they tune in?
In the era of internet and DVR, awards shows need to be more than just awards shows to get people to tune in. If “reworking” means throwing more celebrities on the stage then it’s not going to work. This isn’t 20 years ago when you never got to see your favorite actors outside of their film/TV roles. Gossip sites are huge and we get to see almost too much of actors nowadays.
It also might be nice to add a bit of a celebration of the future. Maybe a couple of clip packages of upcoming films. I’m sure studios would love that and it would give the blogosphere something to talk about.
The bottom line is that right now, there’s nothing that a person gains from watching the Oscars live that they wouldn’t get from just checking the news on Monday morning.
Take all the liberal slime and dump them on an island somewhere. Who gives a flying crap about their movies anymore.
I love the fact that people posting in this thread are loudly proclaiming they don’t care about the Oscars, yet here they are IN A THREAD ABOUT THE OSCARS. Clearly, you do have some interest in them, or you wouldn’t have clicked on this story in the first place.
Fucking Drudge Report morons…
I love how these morons go on about Hollywood only making anti-American, homosexual agenda political movies while the top grossing films of the year so far have been PAUL BLART: MALL COP and HOTEL FOR DOGS.
If it hurts to be stupid, these people must be in paralyzing agony. Try next time, Drudge losers.
I also work in the industry, and I can tell you that there are lots of others in Hollywood who are getting fed up with, well, themselves (so to speak). A storm is brewing within, and these ridiculous awards shows are further proof of how horrible we have become at making movies. Everything these days, it seems, has to have a “message” about how horrible us Americans are. It can’t last forever–something has go to give. The Oscars used to be so popular, so important, and it was such an honor to receive an award. But now, heck, they’re giving awards to Al Gore—AL GORE??? Love him or hate him….an Oscar?? What a slap in the face to the industry. I could rant on and on, but I know that most people understand what I’m saying.
The list of movies and Actors that I’m willing to watch declines as the moronic liberal preaching increases. Its bad enough having undereducated idiots who contribute little or nothing to society make rediculous wages, but lump on top of that their rightous sense of superiority and I’m ready to puke.
Jon, they contribute their movies which pump billions into the global economy. What do you contribute to society ? Making stupid comments online doesn’t count.
As a conservative and one who loves movies, I can honestly say that its not the movies nominated that is the reason many people don’t tune in to watch the OSCAR show but rather Liberal Infantilism of the Hollywood Community against 50 percent of the populace. Its the same reason many conservatives refuse to attend many films throughout the year and or past years instead they choose to cherry pick those films that present a star or film that doesn’t talk down to them. This said, Hollywood and its filmmakers refuse to accept this fact and try to blame the lack of attention to their industry to issues not even remotely close to the problem. So Hollywood continues to alienate and sink sink sink as they have for the last decade or so…
I’m happy I grew up when it was difficult to choose what movie to go to,we went at least 2 times a week. Couldn’t do that now, but even if I could, nothing good to choose from.
I haven’t watched an Oscar broadcast since Billy Crystal stopped hosting them. Why would I want to watch four hours of tasteless jokes, annoying political (sorry, I mean acceptance) speeches and awards given to movies only liked on the West Coast, in Chicago and the North East?
Gotta wonder what the PR person behind these awards is thinking… depressing how this event has been so effectively run into the ground in just a few years.. Paging Pat Kingsley…
I would rather watch paint dry than watch the Oscars!
1. Nikki, you ever notice that whenever Drudge links to your site, the IQ of your comments drops 50 points.
2. As for the parade of “anti-American” comments, I have this to say. If you GOP fuckwads hate the movies so much, why are you spending time out of your day posting here?
3. Sean Penn is a “traitor”? Why is that again?
This should hardly be surprising. Hollywood is completely out of touch with REAL Americans! Apparently, many of them have come to the conclusion that being the modern day equivalent to the court jester makes them somehow important or smart. Guess what – WE ALL PRETENDED TO BE SOMETHING WE WEREN’T AS KIDS… you’re nothing special, you’re movies suck and you have absolutely no idea what so ever about what being an American really is and it’s become quite obvious that the American people by and large don’t give a crap what you twits have to say.
How’s this, move hollywood to Europe, they’re likely to have more interest in what you have to say and ideologically that’s where you belong anyway!
Oh, did I mention your movies pretty much suck now? I can’t even tell you the last year I saw a new release in a movei theater – unless it was a kids movie for my daughter. So long and good riddance as far as I’m concerned.
I’ll have you know I’m neither female nor gay, and I look forward to watching the Oscars every year. That said, many of the commenters have valid points. Maybe with the libs running the country (into the ground), Hollywood can stop making so many anti-American films aimed solely at coastal audiences.
2008 was the year The Dark Knight and Iron Man came out. Plus we got Wall-e, Kung Fu Panda, and the new James Bond. That’s what’s important to me. I hope Ledger and Rourke win, but whether the Academy thinks Milk or Frost/Nixon is a better movie doesn’t matter.
Oh yeah I forgot, half the presentors have been threatening to move out of the US before each of the last three elections. Maybe if they had the ratings would go up.
Hollywood is out of touch. The movies you make are irrelevant at best and mind-numbing usually. Gee, let’s spend a ton of money on another GWB slamfest! That always works! You people are pathetic.
Your values are morally corrupt and at odds with those that you rely on to pay for movies in theaters. Don’t you get it? Obviously not. For as smart and enlightened as you think you are, you are all mental midgets. Get a clue! You live and die by us. You work for us. We spend our money at the movies out of our surplus. Times are tuff and we are not going to to the theater to see the crap you dole out anymore.
“christopher” above said it best. Better than I ever could. Heed his words. They speak volumes about your predicament.
Americans no longer have three hours to watch overpaid pretty faces pretend to be intelligent on TV. Their vapid comments reflect the reality of today’s liberalism, and that is not my cup of tea.
Screw they MPAA, they have attacked the people with draconian tactics and it’s time for them to rot in fiscal hell.
The show has lost its appeal, the truth is, because of tabloid print and tabloid television we see most of the celebrities wayyyyyy toooo much. Before it was cool to see “movie stars” get out of limos. Now we see most movie stars getting Starbucks coffee in their sweat pants and see them out jogging or going from bar to bar.
I think there were good movies this year, I really enjoyed The Duchess (great costume drama) I loved The Reader, I enjoyed The Visitor. Watching The Wrestler made me almost tear up, the character to bound to screw his life up at every turn. I love the trasformation in Benjamin Button. I stand in line and buy tickets to movies. So I will be watching the telecast, and waiting to hear the winners, but I am sure most older Americans and most men could care less and won’t be watching. Just me and gays will be watching and bitching and rooting. One last thing, I know WAY too MUCH about Angelina and Brad, please stop already!
I am sorry but what has Hollywood done for America since WWII. Back then, the actors supported the troops and the nation. We were unified. Now, it seems that they just want to trash the country and values that made us strong.
I do not support the new movies or the Oscars. Hollywood of old is long gone.
PK, what have you done for America lately ? At least movies pump billions into the economy.
I see that Drudge Report linked another one of Nikki’s story.
I rather watch Tom & Jerry with my kids, then to expose them to a constant bombardment of hate God & America themes. My kids deserve better! America deserves better. Just SICK! of it PERIOD!
I haven’t been to a movie, or rented any flics for years, however, I am a collector of old films, and espicially old WWII films that were admitedly pro war propaganda. Amazing how Hollywood, once pro-war, is now anti-war. How then does one explain that Hollywood produces many times more films which are watch by less and less. Maybe they should concentrate on quality, divert from repeating plots, and relying on special affects, instead of logical, comedic and sound writing.
Note to self: don’t hang out with this bunch of bitter-ass commenters, they sound about as much fun as a tabasco suppository.
I like how they berate the self-aggrandizing award ceremonies, but yet are just as self righteous and self-important, because OF COURSE, they’re criteria is superior. Perhaps they’re worked up because the LA traffic’s worse than usual this weekend.
Relax people, go for a walk. Actually, don’t. You’ll be dragging your negative karma out onto the streets.
Immoral narcissists, who spew political hatred, can’t stay married to the same person for 48 hours, and crank out badly-written reruns about unsympathetic characters in bizarre, bloody scenarios. Gosh, who wouldn’t want to watch an awards show about that?
Who wants to hear these Hollywood elitist spew their political agenda with a national audience! I for one am sick of their liberal agendas and their hate speeches. They are paid to entertain US…period!!!
All the movies they make anymore are indeed garbage. The gay writers can’t seem to make anything without a gay person or couple in it anymore.
I say, let’s put salary caps on the so called stars! Millions of dollars for a movie?? They want to go after corporate America for the money they make, yet see nothing wrong with their own outrageous income.
I have not been to a movie in 15 years. I would not support these anti-American Liberal Loons with my hard earned money.
Hollywood should move to India.
I have been a film enthusiast my whole life. I used to go to the movies quite frequently and I’ve collected my favorite films on every home video format since VHS. However, in recent years I have come to despise many of the actors, producers and directors who make them. You can stick your head in the sand and deny the truth, but Hollywood has succeeded in alienating at least half of their audience by spewing political rhetoric and exploiting their celebrity in support of a left-wing political agenda. Even more irritating is the hypocrisy of their conspicuous consumption and limousine liberal attitudes. Many of us just don’t want to pay to see people who we feel are working in opposition to our best interests as Americans. It has become difficult to separate their off screen personas from their on-screen characters. My family used to wait anxiously to watch the “Academy Awards” each and every year just like the annual broadasts of “The Wizard of Oz,” “The Ten Commandments,” “Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” and the “Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.” We would gather around the television and stay up late to root for our favorite films, directors, actors and artisans. However, the Oscar has lost its lustre and it is no longer an American tradition. I am part of a growing number of Americans who couldn’t care less who wins or loses.
Sigh. Drudge people…we don’t come to your site and bitch about Rupubs. Please wait for the People’s Choice or MTV Movie Awards. Oscars are supposed to represent the BEST the industry has to offer, irrespective of box office. With that said, choice of Jackman is just puzzling…all the song ‘n dance make it look more like the Tony Awards. I’ll still watch because I’m a film FAN. If you’re not a fan, don’t watch.
It’s nice to see Hollywood finally eating it’s own. They are so concerned about how they are viewed by everyone else, but then go out of their way to appear like the whiny, overpaid losers that they are. Suck it up pretty boys and go home and drown your sorrows with a high end glass of wine while soaking in your hot-tub.
What would make the Oscars interesting is to allow normal people to vote ie; American Idol or something to that equivelant. That would spice things up. But that won’t happen because it would mean that the studio’s wouldn’t be able to bribe the voters into voting for their movies.
I am so sick of their arrogance…I hope the first thing to collapse with this economy is hollywood. Let’s watch ‘em suffer a little.
To quote a great movie…”Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.” Hollywood thinks that we care which candadite they revere…we don’t give a damn. They think their opinion is a selling point, it helps me know who to vote against. Their awful liberal idiotic ideas have spilled far too much into their work, we don’t need to pay to have @#$% rammed down our throats. Hopefully the biggest victim of this depression Obama has created will be Hollywood. I couldn’t care less about the oscars much less how they doll themselves up…you can keep all that nbc.
It’s a mutual admiration society. There the Oscars, Golden Globes, Tony’s, Emmys, People’s Choice, Sundance, Cannes yada yada yada yada. This is the only industry that loves itself so much it has to publicly announce it over and over again. The general population has more important things to invest their time in.
Hollywood is the most dysfunctional society on the planet! I have no desire to tune in and risk having to hear some actor use this platform to spew nauseating liberal nonsense! These people are so out of step with their audience, they deserve to be tuned out.
people want to be entertained – they want to laugh and smile and enjoy themselves. They don’t want to watch a bunch of self-congratulatory “Artists” preaching to the unwashed masses on how we should live our lives – these people get paid to entertain us – not tell us how stupid they think we are for living and supporting conservative life styles.
I used to enjoy the Matt Damon “Bourne” movies – now I see him and all I can think of is his wide-eyed rants against conservatives. Kind of hard to spend $ on someone you know depises your life and your beliefs.
Hollywood needs to return to the business of entertainment – actors should keep there private lives just that – private.
Ok, show of hands: which of you conservatives in here DIDN’T come in from Drudge’s site?
HEY MIDDLE AMERICA!!
We know we condescend to you, belittle your religion and your values, spit on the American Flag and could care less what you think about it…….BUT,
Will you please watch our rigged awards show and go to our shitty movies? Pleeeeese, We have house boys to support!
hey, nikki, when did your message board become a town hall for obnoxious, unemployed, illiterate, right-wing conservative haters with an ax to grind? in case the 75% of you who are using this opportunity to bash us weird-o hollywood types (how awful! i choose to make my living in the movies! shivers!!) haven’t noticed, we provide HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS of dollars to the local, state and national economy. we don’t moralize – YOU DO. shame on you hateful, intolerant, ugly people. hollywood isn’t a place – it’s people, doing their jobs, the best they can, under some pretty difficult circumstances. the oscars – all the awards shows – are marketing events for movies. you don’t like it? don’t watch.
and, for the record: i’m a registered republican.
“Who the hell cares about the Oscars’ anymore? Earth to Hollywood: YOU SUCK.”
You do understand you are visiting and posting on a website that is about Hollywood? Or did you happen to fall on “DeadlineHOLLYWOODdaily” by accident?
There are scores of negative comments on this site about how much hollywood sucks. If you hate hollywood, then stop reading our news. I get the feeling that most of you are failures, bitter that your lame rom com script didn’t sell. Get over it. Just bc you failed does not mean that you need to drag the rest of us down. Get a life and get lost$ go back to kansas and stopped griping. We don’t want you hear anyway. Now, I am going to go back to pumping out movies. Viva hollywoof! Viva the box office! Later suckers!
It has taken many years however Hollywood has finally
done it. The politics has killed them off for many
Americans. Sean Penn, Clooney, Cher, Sarandan and
the rest of the We Hate America, We Hate Bush, WE HATE.
I would never watch the Oscars again. I will never pay or even
watch a movie when someone like Whoopie groans on and
on about screwed up America is. Those people are time
expendable. Here it is right back at you. We don’t have time
for you.
By the way, Nikki, even though you openly despise everything I stand for, I LOVE YOUR SITE! You truly are an American Institution. The hardest working woman in journalism! Keep up the good work and stay healthy!
Who cares? Most of them are rich, spoiled, ungrateful and rude Anti- Americans. I have never watched an Oscar show..I am not about to now.
The trouble I have with the entire Oscars thing is the same old, same old actors year after year after year. No new talent. Just different movies with the same, tired, predictable stars – who’ve all been far too rich for far too long. Especially nowadays with people struggling to make it, it’s difficult to watch these same people being paid zillions to do what usually amounts to movies that are little better than high school plays. Give us fresh faces, new directors, new talent! Bring it on! Ditch all the bejewelled dinosaurs.
I stopped going to the movies years ago because they were simply dreadful. Further, the culture in Hollywood is aggressively liberal and extremely anti-American. I decided that I would not contribute to the meanspirited, negative egomaniacs who comprise Hollywood and the movie industry. I have not watched the Academy Awards show in more than ten years because I am sick of the liberal actors, none of them educated, bashing Republicans and shrieking about their causes. Let others fund their hedonistic, immoral lifestyles but I decline.
No Clint Eastwood for Gran Torino?
No Bruce Springsten for The Wrestler?
So so so dumb.
And Frost/Nixon up for Best Picture? – 2/3 of the way through the movie – Frost does a 40 second montage of reading old documents and that’s his character arc? Really? Seth Rogan did a 40 second montage of reading baby books in “Knocked Up’ and that felt like a forced character arc – but it ‘Knock Up’ wasn’t up for BP.
Oh, are the Oscars going to be on again?
Hollywood sucks the bone. They refuse to make anything that isn’t insulting to America, or a remake (”reimagining” – puke) of a classic movie that should have been left alone. Pink Panther, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Andromeda Strain, the list goes on and on. I can’t believe there are no new ideas, so it has to be the morons who “green light” the projects.
The last time I was in a movie theater was 1995. The way things are going, I may well go to my grave without ever setting foot inside another.
Why watch the Oscars? The movies weren’t all that great and performers dressed in trashy clothes is worse. Who really wants to watch a bunch of self-important, ditzy performers that are clueless? Just listen to them and you will easily realize why the need scripts with a lot of small words for movies.
When you let crap like “NO country for old men” win then Im done with it.
I downloaded all the movies from the Internet, could not finish any of them; thank Gawd I paid nothing for them.
Please . . . everyone is being too hard on these poor underpriviged celebs! All they need is a little bit of sympathy from the uncultured masses out here.
So, here goes: Boo hoo hoo. Wah wah. Soooooo sorry for all those celebs who can’t be blamed for their lack of creativity, originality, and talent. They were just born that way, doncha know.
Maybe when wealth redistribution kicks in to tax 99% of their indecently gross salaries for making terrible movies, they might muster a just a tiny little bit of appreciation for what “real” life is like, and reflect that reality in their future “artistic” endeavors.
Just A Movie Fan — NOT!
The oscars are nothing more than a platform for the spoiled so called actors to trash the very country they live and earn in. Sean Penn, Brad Pitt, George Clooney couldn’t carry John Wayne’s jockstrap. Who gives a rats behind for any of these phonies?
Well it is about time people started seeing these people for what they really are. Just people. For god’s sake monkey’s and dog’s do their job. Literally!! Nobody watches because nobody cares about their bloated ideals anymore.
Dear Hollywood: Nobody has cared what you do for a very long time. Now go have your little awards ceremony while the rest of us do something worthwhile, like wash our hair.
i refuse to let Hollywood liberals into my home to spew their hatred for America, while they embrace homos, queers, and the Messiah (Barry Obama). Hollywood is failing because Americans are finding value in REAL things: being with friends, going to church, reading books, finding work in a difficult economy. You can have a great life, but it has to include God, and this is what Hollywood and Oprah have forgotten. The types of films Hollywood puts out are sleazy smut and aren’t wholesome. i only watch wholesome shows. are you listening, Hollywood?
Hollywood offers violence and filth, charges high prices for exposure to it, trumpets inane politics and expects us to care? Very, very Yawn
Put all of the Oscar nominees and presenters on an island and watch who gets voted off. Now that would be entertaining!
They should have renamed it the GrannyOscars, since the demo of those watching this silly awards show are 49-55 age group and above.
Every year, they kept ignoring the popular movies and artistic ones in favour for some obscure titles and nominating the same actor (Streep on her 15th nominations..seriously, she need not act and will still be nominated). Same goes for the GrannyGrammys.
I used to take the day off to watch the show but now, can’t be bothered!
Who wants to watch a bunch of liberals who have made mostly USA-bashing movies over the last decade sit and celebrate themselves?
To hell with all of them.
i gave up watching hollyweird. the far left wing activists are relentlessly, in your face, insultingly political. old time studio moguls had it right to keep stars muzzled. “shut up and entertain” – nobody cares what your drug induced political opinions are, especially after your latest failure at rehab. it’s positively infuriating to roughly 50% of the country to hear these barely literate play acting idiots try to make themselves feel important and relevant by verbally attacking their own country and its leaders (provided the leadership is not left leaning). so let them have all the constant “awards” ceremonies they want. they can try to tell themselves and others that they are good liberals but less and less people even care to watch. like wall street, theirs is a bankrupt view of life, worthy of fading into obscurity.
I stopped watching the Oscars in the late 80s because it was so long and so boring. It became very political, to a point that only these stupid, artsy-fartsy movies would win, when clearly, big name movies – action, sci-fi would always lose. Who cares about a sappy, tired drama for old people or movies that addresses the snobs in hollywood.
The best example this year is the Dark Knight. It won’t be acknowledged for one reason: They don’t acknowledge comic book movies – no matter how great, how popular, or how much money it made – no matter how good the writing or screenplay is. The only reason why Keith Ledger is getting the nod this year is because he died.
Plus, another reason why I stopped watching is that these actors today are nothing more than pompus, self-important blow-hards that think that their crap don’t stink and they have a great need to get political or share with the world how much money they want to give to some other nation. How about fixing the problems and helping out the starving and poor in our own country!?? IT’s just a political move on their part, like the dim-witted Madonna and Angelina adopting babies from Africa. Please.. adopt an american you moron..take care of your own house before taking care of someone else’s! puh-lease!
The Hollywood idiots believe that they rule the world just because they have a small talent in front of a camera. Who cares what hollywood thinks anymore. This isn’t the 60’s and we’re tired of your point of views being shoved down our youth..
I love the guy who says, “I don’t know anyone who watches this show any more.” The stats show it’s 30 million people. Your friends are weirdos, dude.
How refreshing it is to read these posts and see that more and more people are simply fed up with hollywood. Even Tom Hanks. It is getting to the point that I can’t watch a movie because I CAN’T FIND ONE that the actor is a political dumbass. America, we need to rise up and fight back.
It’s a political circle jerk – people in positions of high power vote for the movies their friends (or employers) make. How else can we explain Forrest Gump over Pulp Fiction in ‘94?
And what’s up with Oliver taking home Best Picture of ‘68, when 2001: Space Odyssey wasn’t even nominated?
I don’t think Hollywood or the Academy has changed in forty years. And that’s the problem.
Well, the movies that are nominated this year are NOT the best movies this year. The Dark Knight was the best movie of the year. Everyone knows it, but the petty little Hollywood fairies couldn’t let it even be nominated. So here we are, an awards show that NO ONE gives a f**k about.
Oscar, you are so done. Put a fork in the little bald gold guy. Screw Hollywood and The Wizard.
Bottom line, who really cares about watching or attending the 500th award show of the season. Hollywood stars are some of the most overpaid, overawarded people in society. And for what – the ability to act like someone else. Amazing.
I haven’t gone to a movie in two years, except in the last two months I went to three that were excellent: Gran Torino, Defiance, and Taken. Of course, none of them were nominated for anything. So I will not be watching the garbage Oscars tomorrow.
I think the problem is that our country is in a severe recession and people are hurting and losing their homes and livlyhood. Why would they want to watch a bunch of mega rich Hollywood types who have never worked a day in their lives parade around in their expensive clothes and jewelry. I for one will tune out.
In twenty years, people will still be talking about The Dark Knight. Whatever wins Best Picture on Sunday will join Annie Hall, Gandhi, and Chariots of Fire (films no one talks about).
Academy Awards is the industry patting itself on the back. Nothing wrong with that, *in principle*. Ideally, the “respect of one’s peers” is something we all want, but assholes telling other assholes they’re “special” is boring. They should make the whole flamingly boring nonsense a private gathering for members of the Academy, and print a one line article on page 38 of the newspaper about it. That’s how much it matters.
Make movies people want to see, maybe they will come back. The total drivel that comes out of Hollywood is below awful. Audiences don’t care about an actors political ideas they want to be entertained. The left wing has so thoroughly infiltrated Hollywood that it will never recover, thankfully. UNLESS, they make films that people enjoy. forget the lesbians, and gays they can go online and see that crap. Bush is no longer president so I guess they have nothing to bitch about this time out. Certainly they wont say anything negative about the lord and savior BO! Who, incidentally will be a 1 termer thank GOD….Yes I said God, so I guess this wont get published.
Take all the so called actors and go live in Venezuela with the dictator you adore, take the “nose” Streissand with you. What a bunch of no talent, spoiled rotten assholes you all are.
Which other profession works eight months and then attends award ceremonies for four months?? It is a very odd and self-indulgent profession.
Sick and tired of Hollywood cramming political and sexual agendas down our movie-loving throats, we go see silly stuff that never gets nominated for an Oscar, such as Shopaholic (last night). The Nixon movie was awful and Milk is a joke.
I am curious, why do they bother showing these? A bunch of self-absorbed, extremely over paid, marginally talented elitists who pat each other on the backs for what? Play acting? Please. Get a life you freaks.
Oscars, Golden Globes, MTV awards, and the lists go on and on and on.
Movies arent much for entertaining anymore. Most are re dos of old movies. Actors and actresses get too much money and credit for everything personal to political.
Waste of time to watch as they are only self promoting shows.
And they didnt even invite the Governator.
They need to follow Roger Ebert’s advice from way back when and nominate ten things in each category – five from the first half of the year and five from the second half. This would result in the “quality” fare being distributed more evenly throughout the year and also allow nominations to be driven by quality instead of by release timing.
It’s all to predictable. They’ll be the usual Obama congrats, parting shots at Bush, Palin and any other politican standing in the way of their agenda. Example: remake of “Day the Earth Stood Still” turns into global warming propaganda. Surprized they didn’t celebrate an enlightened “gay” alien protecting a womans “right” to abort a baby even when it’s “partially” born. Hooray for Pelosi and Reid and Obama, and the usual suspects uttering the usual banalities. Then they can get onto the sex and drug parties so tomorrow they can tell us who to vote for or what causes to support. Time to vomit.
Harvey Weinstein ruined the Oscars.
He has done it for years.
Reform the nomination and voting system.
And get rid of so many montages!
Go, Mickey, go!
As long as Hollywood continues to churn out movies loaded up with the “F” word, totally nude sex scenes bordering on pornography, story lines seemingly scripted by 12-year olds and conservative-bashing, my family and I won’t be supporting them. Remember, Obama only won by 53%…so there are a LOT (47%) of us conservatives out here who like to spend money on going to the movies. However, the only decent ones that come out that I will pay money to take my family to see are the animated ones and I wouldn’t go to them except for the kids. Take a note from say a Nights of Rodanthe. A mature, intelligent love story with great lines and discreet love scenes where no breasts pop out or derrières are shoved in our faces…but we still get it that they’re making love! Produce more movies like these and I guarantee Hollywood will see a resurgence of interest from all of us unsophisticated, un-New York, un-LA people who live in the heart of this country and have plenty of dollars to go to the movies. Until then, good luck to film producers as they continue to sponsor & pander to that demographic that enjoys the mindless junk they’re now putting out there. Watch the Oscars? Why in the world would I want to watch all those wealthy people who continually make fun of and bash my values?
Hollywood has descended into a mouse driven special effects kid show that often includes some multi channel audio track designed to appeal to 40 something’s going on 18. All the best movies are behind us. Actually film noir from the middle forties is far better in terms of real talent. These Hollywood adult audio, video techno and left leaning geeks should watch the DVD, “Visions of Light” to see how real movies were made years ago. “Birth of a Nation” has more talent than the high definition fetish leather clad action garbage shown today. Busby Berkeley had far more real talent with special effects than any of these Macintosh/Windows children have today. My wife and I spent big bucks for a multi-channel home theater system with a Pioneer 60” Kiro plasma and quite frankly, Orson Welles “A Touch of Evil” never looked better. Many of the new DVD and Blu-rays are filled with advertising junk before the main feature. I would never purchase one of these so we use the Netflix service. As far as the Oscar show is concerned, what mature person wants to see a bunch of clueless air headed celebrities parading around showing their ignorance? There is far more creativity shown in the three “That’s Entertainment” videos by MGM than I have seen in many years.
Have you ever gone to a concert, only to hear the performer lecture the audience with their political views? That’s all the awards shows. Every show is about an agenda and not about entertainment. If Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian can make it in your world by releasing home porn, that’s not saying too much about what the credibility and respectibility of your industry is today. You don’t get that, Hollywood. You’re not nervous about that. What you are nervous about is very few people are interested in what you are selling these days. Home porn and Michael Moore. You won’t get it, either, because you are the idiot performer who has to inject your political philosophies into what you are selling. Just like the old saying, “Shut up and sing!”, people are telling you to shut up and make movies. Good luck trying to keep your mouths shut.
I used to watch the Oscars up until about twenty years ago. That is when the celebs started to beat us over the head with their politically correct views on every thing from, who to vote for in the next election… to saving the planet by becoming a vegetarian. Frankly, I don’t give a rat’s behind what Sean Penn or Susan Suranden or Bono thinks about anything. The Oscars used to be about acting and talent and not about some wanna-be actor’s bonehead opinion concerning the environment or some war.
Its time for the Academy to clean up their act. Throw out the rappers, the hip-hoppers, and the politics!!! Get back to the fundamentals. Stop trying to give out Oscars to everyone like it was a school track-meet where everyone gets a ribbon just for participating! This would would have the added benefit of reducing the Oscar presentaions from a three and a half hour boring extravaganza down to a two hour show. Wait a minute, … even better, … cut out some more of the pontification and make it a half hour show!!!
The economy is just so bad. People are either unemployed or worrying they’re about to be. I don’t see the average viewer sitting down for three hours of watching millionaires collect little cold statues.
well said by all. Boring, lousy actors, who cares about their clothing
the excitement of Holly wood is gone. to much flak about nothing. let them insult their messiah as he certainly is not first class now that the true world is his problem
I like Kate Winslet but why so much hype over her. Her movied are doing bad at the box office too. That means nobody cares. I saw two good movies recenttly, Gran Torino and The Wrestler. Both got snubbed by the Oscars. And the Oscar commitee wonders why viewrship is done. You don’t listen to the people. Hollywood is out of touch.
If I ran the Oscars, I’d want Steve Martin to host. There’d be no dance numbers, just lotsa clips of THIS YEAR’S movies (plus behind the scenes stuff as well). Every year, it seems we have to see clips of past Oscar-winners. Waste of time. But this year’s telecast will probably bomb. I don’t know of anyone who’s seen THE READER or FROST/NIXON. Have you?
The reason the ratings are going to be low again, is simple as many said the lack of nominations for The Dark Knight or WALL E or any other film a large number of people have seen. I’m not trying to discuss Art vs popularity but that’s a simple fact. And with the economy collapsing people have other concerns than which overpraised actor gets a gold statue in another hollywood circle jerk.
Hollywood lost most of its luster the day it started calling movies “art”. Anyone who thinks movies are artistic is part of the reason it will fall. Movies are nothing but crap designed by communists to make shifts to the left in society by brainwashing the young and the weak minded. Did you know its an “unwritten rule” that every actor has to do a pro-gay or multi-racial movie at some point in their career? Yep, thats one the elites do not want you to know.
I think the main thing that the Oscars has been missing lately is spontaneity. The only Oscar moments that I can recall off the top of my head from the last several years are Chris Rock dissing Jude Law with Sean Penn responding that “Jude Law is one of our finest actors”, and when Adrian whatshisname kissed Halle Berry after he won. Those spontaneous, wacky moments (a la Jack Palance doing one-handed push ups, Sally Fields saying “you like me, you really like me” and Marlon Brando’s Indian lady friend accepting the award in his place) are what people remember about the Oscars, not the endless Humphrey Bogart montages or awkward attempts at comedy from Seth Rogen. The Oscars should encourage more spontaneity, even if it means listening to dim-witted celebtrities spouting political rubbish
The only people who care about the Oscars are the idiot Hollywood libs who make boring ass art house movies. Isn’t it ironic that The Dark Knight made more money than all of the ‘Best’ picture nominees combined but isn’t nominated in that category? Hey Hollywood- the people have voted with their wallets and your ‘Best’ movies suck!
Hollywerid is full of nothing more than over inflated egos. I have gotten so tired of these pinheads vomiting hate and contempt for America and it’s people. YOUR ACTORS!!!!!!!!!! Nothing more, nothing less!!!! We don’t care about what you think, seeing your Crib, your ride or anything else. I agree with someone earlier, quit remaking old T.V. Shows, old movies, for goodness sake you make all the money at least come up with an original idea!!!!! I don’t watch the Oscars, or any other “awards” show. It’s nothing more than a bunch of egocentric fools patting themselves on the back!!!! You want an award! Have an original thought, and get a spine!
Good night
I’ve never understood why anyone cares about an industry congratulating itself, anyway. Why would ANYONE watch?
Imagine Edison: “Most electrons pushed down a wire.”
Or perhaps General Electric: “Smoothest spinning wind turbines in a field of greater than 200.”
Maybe this is the year the Oscars will finally just go away, and Hollywood can concentrate on trying to make movies instead of THIS nonsense.
I stopped watching the Oscar since 1999 when actors and actresses become too political instead of sticking to their trade ACTING. These overpaid people has the notion they know what its like to live on less than 10 bucks a day. These people in hollywood are overrated to the point I can’t stand majority of them. Hollywood now produces trashy movies not fit for any minors to watch, full of sex, swearing and innuendos to the point I can say Hollywood full of weird people contributed to the decline of morality in this country.
The problem with Hollywood is that they forget they are court jesters! And the court jesters today stink, and that is putting it mildly. We real people are sick and tired of seeing the tripe Hollywood is putting out today. Compared to Classic Hollywood, today’s Hollywood does not compare. When the Oscars were awarded back in the day, it was awarded for talent, not boobs, beauty, and youth!
I am afraid it’s time to put old Oscar away, nobody cares anymore.
Jesus, you Drudge people are truly, fatally deluded. There’s a reason “people… continually make fun of an bash my values.” You come off like a prudish misanthrope who sounds more like the Taliban than someone willing to truly explain your misguided “values.” You may not spend your money on crude comedies and R-rated horror movies, but look at the boxoffice and realize that plenty of “un-New York, un-LA” people are buying tickets for the material you rally against. Clearly you must have hated MILK, which teaches acceptance; SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, which emphasizes triumph over adversity; THE VISITOR, which is all about diversity and compassion. Oh, sorry, you’re too busy buying tickets to see PAUL BLART and FRIDAY THE 13TH and blaming the current administration for the economic crisis you created.
Go away. As for me? I’m going to an Oscar party.
PS – I’m from Ohio.
Wow. If you all hate Hollywood so much, I’m wondering why you’d be wasting your time reading (and then posting on) Deadline Hollywood Daily? The Oscars are not a popularity contest, they were created to promote films. Yes, they’re overblown and silly. But why get so upset over them? Just don’t watch! And don’t spend time here reading about Hollywood if you hate it so much.
Go Mickey Rourke!!!
and bring on the “Trophy Boys” !!!
When the movies stopped being interesting, the Oscars stopped being interesting.
All the nominees look “ok”, but frankly, when I finally get those DVD envelopes in the mail, I won’t be chomping at the bit to put Slumdog Millionaire in the old DVD player.
I don’t care how good it is. It looks dull. End of story.
Same goes for the rest.
Maybe this can sum up the quality of movies.
My awards show has a first name it’s O-s-c-a-r…
Most to all movies today are made like hot dogs and if you like animal lips and @$$-holes then you’ll LOVE these movies.
Milk, Frost/Nixon, et. al, all self congratulatory leftist movies that people are just sick and tired of hearing about. Get a clue Hollywood, and start making films the rest of the country can enjoy. No more “message” films, PLEASE!!!
I haven’t watch the Oscars for a long, long time. I can not tell one blond skinny woman, with borrowed clothes, jewerly etc. from another. Guys that all look alike, with voices that do not sound like real men. All, girls and boys, with names that you can not remember. All using the place to express their lack of knowledge, education, culture and manners. With “how I love the British,” “global warming,” “down with Bush,” applauding the #7 (of wherever) Anti-American trailer trash, with pretentions. I DO NOT GO TO THE MOVIES EITHER, TO SEE WHAT?
Here’s one – maybe we don’t give a rats ass about Hollywood and the narcissistic attitude they have as well as their politics that are a slap in the face to half of the country… how’s that?
Here’s how to save the Oscars. Make it a pay-per-view event. The winner of each category is decided with a no-holds-barred fight between the acors nominated for the award. I would pay to watch these idiot leftist celebutards beat the hell out of each other. Otherwise I’ll be skipping this silly self-indulgent nonsense once again.
Who would care about a show that years ago stopped honoring talent and creativity? Instead its just a bunch of liberals congratulating themselves and taking pot shot at people who use their heads for honest discussion, IE conservatives.
I will tune in for the first 5 minutes…if I hear them ripping that wet behind the ears idiot Obama like they ripped Bush for 8 years I will contuinue to watch.
(crickets chirp)
It’s pathetic how this crowd is hyped as “talent”. If half of them weren’t born into a hollywood family they’d be working at McD’s! Face it – the flyover states have more discriminating taste and we’re voting by staying away from the box office along with “tuning out” from Oscar. Also sick of being talked down to by the likes of psycho AJ who swaps blood with Billy Bob. Don’t care how many kids she adopts or spits out.
Since the original movie didn’t have one, perhaps someone could show an actual ending to No Country for Old Men during the show. I’d watch.
Hollywood is a cesspool, and its movies reflect it perfectly. The cesspool is inhabited by people with 82 IQs who think that their fame obligates them to make disparaging remarks about our nation’s leaders. I have pretty much stopped spending any money that would go to the idiots who keep heeping the slop on poor unsuspecting admission payers.
yes john, a touch of evil is a movie worth seeing again and again.
i watched a movie called “days of glory” last night on dvd, of course, i haven’t been inside a movie theater since cell phones with ring a dings were invented.
it made hanks movie “saving private ryan” look like hollywood’s idea of a war movie.
who wins or loses, who cares.
if you want to know about some award, check the spolier oscar page and you won’t have to watch a dumb show. watch a 50’s noir film instead.
top of the world ma, top of the world.
Wow. Drudge’s readers are really, really angry people. Despite their protests to the contrary, they DO watch the Oscars and they certainly DO go to movies, as evident by last year’s gross sales, the highest in the industry’s history. So, feel free not to watch – the business is doing just fine without you.
I’m kind of getting older now so I remember Academy award shows where talented actors got awards for amazing performances. How can Brad Pitt compare to James Stewart or Cary Grant? Style over substance has made Hollywood close to becoming irrelevant. It’s their own fault.
Hollywood haters like Michael Moore will be a no-show since Bush isn’t in office anymore.
Anyone who claims in a blanket statement that there “are no good movies anymore” (Maybe in all caps or with lots of exclamation points) lacks the intellectual capacity to determine the quality of fine entertainment.
I’m glad you are all staying home and not getting in my way at the multi-plex. Now get back to home schooling your kids so you can pass on your small minded views and thought poison to another generation because if you let them go to public school we will teach them to be gay and/or marry black men.
I so… don’t care about the overpaid leftists in the film industry. It’s a really bad idea to piss off a large portion of the audience, they stop coming to the movies.
The GOP… they are lucky that the only thing that hollywood can do is bash them. Hello…anyone there? Are we not in an economic mess due to GOP leadership of the last 8 years. Talk about being UN-American!
The Oscars…they suck for the various reasons stated above. I can waste my time with quality reality tv instead of that crap.
The dark knight—they movie sucked as bad as Bale’s Batman voice. The only and truly bright spot was the acting of heath ledger.
All they produce is crap. No one watches the (yawn) Oscars.
I am tired of being lectured to by the so called “elite” who know better than the movie goers who they concider too stupid to understand THEM. Not all people born in the south are toothless, beer guzzling, gun packing, morons. I guess I am tired of being insulted by this bunch. Yes, I am a Republican, and yes, I voted for President Bush, and NO I don’t regret it. Guess that does make me a moron, so be it.
I find those foul mouthed, hate fuilled anti-American political jerks insulting. Not only won’t I watch them, I don’t allow my children to tune into those hate filled demonstations of bad taste.
My husband and I can count on one hand the number of movies we’ve seen without the kids over the last several years. We’ll take the kids to kiddie movies as long as the green agenda isn’t being rammed down our throats.
We don’t enjoy the movies anymore because there isn’t any thought put into them. I’m not asking for much, just entertainment without a bunch of foul language, sex and blood. The more blood, sex and foul language the worse the movie. Poor writers rely on these three things when they haven’t the talent to write a good story. Third rate actors and actresses (and singers for that matter) remove their clothes when they don’t have the talent to carry the scenes without the help of their private parts. Foul language is used when a person isn’t intelligent enough to think of a better substitute.
I’m willing to admit that I used to buy the gossip mags but I haven’t done so in a couple of years because there aren’t any stars worth reading about. Brad and Angelina aren’t people I want to know anything about: adultery and out-of-wedlock kids. All the stars who think I give a toss about their liberal leanings lost my favor long ago. They’ve annoyed me enough that I refuse to spend money to see them. Stars who prance around without underwear are nothing but cheap sluts. There is nothing glamorous and definitely nothing mysterious about any of them. All their secrets are freely given up by themselves.
I’ve long since switched to primarily watching BBC America (MI-5, Robin Hood, etc) for television and the BBC bonnet movies for entertainment. Their actors age gracefully, have naturally shaped chests and don’t rant their political agendas at us. They have plenty of hunky actors (Richard Armitage, Colin Firth and Jonas Armstrong among them) and wonderful actresses (Judi Dench, Patricia Routledge, Emma Thompson, etc).
Hollywood can implode. I won’t notice.
And don’t you know the “actors” will be feeling more empowered than ever to state their pathetic political agendas since their Messiah and Marxist in Chief is in office….
So here’s a message for you: Fuck you and your lousy self-congratulatory lame awards show.
The Oscars is too long. They could do the show in 30 minutes. All of the movies suck, and the actors are snobs. No grace at all.
Hollywood is full of traitorous pinko swine who ought to be strung up from the nearest tree for voicing the opinion that THE GREATEST AMERICAN PRESIDENT EVER, GEORGE W. BUSH, was anything other than the best thing to happen to the world since Jesus rose from the grave and ascended to his place at the right hand of his most holy father.
They continue to sing the praises of anti-American, left-wing, brain-dead, communist, homosexual, atheistic, anti-family, pro-abortion, anti-segregationist, union-supporting, democrat TRAITORS like Mickey Rourke, Sean Penn, and that dark-skinned kid from Slumdog Millionaire–while ignoring the films that REAL PEOPLE who actually WORK for a living and think apple pie is just fine, thank you, support, like AMERICAN Carol and Beverly Hills Chihuahua. I can’t imagine how they can sleep at night. Oh wait, I can… with their DRUGS and HOMOSEXUAL ORGIES.
Whatever happened to family filmmakers like Walt Disney? At least you could take your kids to his films without worrying that they might end up having something to think about, unlike swill like Wall-E.
Where are the great film stars? Why do we have to suffer exposure to the slightly nuanced, wholly unsavory views of George CLooney or Matt Damon? Where are true PATRIOTS like Duke and Jimmy? I believe they’re out there, even in Hollywood, but they’ve been driven underground–they must suppress their righteous views, for fear of being blacklisted and sodomized by their peers.
WHy does no one make films like Frank Capra’s anymore, films with REAL AMERICAN values and no color? Why would anyone WANT to make a movie about a sexual deviant politician (and worse than that, a democrat) or a low-class wrestler willing to die for the opportunity to perform, let alone watch one? Just because they’re well-made films with interesting topics doesn’t mean they’re any GOOD. They’re awful. Nobody, NOT A SINGLE PERSON who doesn’t live in the moral cesspools of New York and Hollywood wants to see movies like that, and that’s a 100% true, no BS, no exaggeration fact! I don’t live in either of those cities, and everyone else who also doesn’t live in those cities believes exactly the same things I believe.
Seriously, if I wasn’t so busy ensuring people with a slightly darker complexion than mine weren’t trying to sneak into my country and steal my job, I’d get together with my friends Bubba, Joe, and Bubba-Joe and we’d get our shotguns and go show those anti-american homos in Hollywood how REAL people deal with the kind of crap they’re trying to FORCE our kids–our KIDS–to watch.
Just thinking about those so-called “people” in Hollywood is making me nauseous, even more nauseous than thinking usually makes me. Won’t someone do the right thing and detonate something there so good, God-fearing folk like myself no longer have to concern ourselves with the corrupting garbage they’re peddling to REAL Americans?
Hollywood is out of touch with the rest of America and it shows the most with the Oscar Nominations. Where is Gran Torino? Where are the movies America loved? I won’t be watching the Oscars.
Did Rush Limbaugh link to this article, or what? I feel like I’m watching “Right America: Feeling Wronged” again with this comments.
I can’t believe the liberal bashing tone of these comments. One would think that a new era would be given a chance, but no. Sore losers? With all the talk about the politics and the money and the self-involvement of Hollywood stars, does anyone stop to think that the bulk of the money in the United States is controlled by one percent of the population–the very rich getting richer? Who are the real elites and why do they keep demanding (and getting) tax cuts?
If you haven’t given it a thought, well, then forget about criticizing politics and bashing entertainers for being private citizens with the right to vote and campaign for their candidates, along with the occupation of acting. Being against those privileges for those in the entertainment world is quite unAmerican.
And will the best picture win? Nahh, but the show is still entertaining, at least at times.
You can bet I won’t watch these overpaid, undereducated leftists get on the air and salivate over Obama while trashing honest hard working Americans. How about a salary cap of $500,000 for these loons? We might actually get a decent film once in a while. I don’t care to see Heath praised for his illegal behavior either.
No wonder California is a mess! Keep them there.
man, the haters are out in full force tonight!
what are you guys even doing on a movie website anyways?
But I agree with what most of you are saying.
Classic Hollywood liberalism. “We’re liberals who stand for the little people and the downtrodden, who are complete brainless morons and should never come here and post!”
And they wonder why their ratings keep dropping . . .
So all the big A-list MOVIE STARS turned down requests to present, huh? Well…that certainly explains why Jennifer Aniston was asked…and why she’ll show up to rain on Pitt & Jolie’s big evening. No, they’re not going to win, but being nominated is still a big deal and they should have been able to enjoy the evening without having his undeserving ex-wife staring daggers in their backs all evening. I guess the producers asked Aniston in an attempt to rebuke Jolie for turning them down. What do they expect? The woman has 6 kids and is prepping for a new movie that’ll start in less than 10 days. She’s got more important things to worry about than presenting the award for Best Lighting or Best Sound Editing. The Anistons of this world will never be nominated for an Oscar so of course she’ll jump at the chance to present – and the fact that she can annoy Pitt and Jolie by ruining their evening is a bonus for her. Hope she enjoys herself because I doubt many of the other acting nominees will appreciate what should be a big day for them being turned into Brangelina vs. Aniston by the media because Aniston didn’t have the good sense to turn down the Academy. It’s always about her PR for that woman. Nobody else matters. I hope she remembers that when she’s trying to convince one of the studios to buy her next bad romcom, “The Baster”.
Goodness, these people don’t seem to know that the film industry is making more money than it ever has. People are going to the movies like never before.
Why is everyone so angry? It’s just the movies. Although I have to agree, cut out the crap and let the winners speak. This is what people want to see.
Doesn’t anyone else think it is a little more than weird that a large number of Hollywood movie and music celebrity’s have had twin births in recent years?
I couldn’t care less about those clowns in Hollywood. Most have an approximate 6th grade education and spew off like political pundits.
To hell with all of them – talk about being totally irrelevant. Hollywood and the Penn/Streisand/Hoffman crowd sicken me to no end.
I do not know of a single person who invests more than 30 seconds of time on those limousine liberals and hypocrites.
Movies are hyped way too much today. That’s why the Oscars are boring. The Dark Knight was not impressive and it received too much acknowledgment (I understand why, but not worthy of Oscar treatment). Movies that should be nominated are snubbed and the committee goes with what it popular, basically you could call it “Homecoming” for movie stars. It’s just a popularity contest.
I don’t know what is with all the comments here about how the Hollywood Elite won’t be able to bash Bush and Republicans… They will continue to do so and tomorrow night will be “the entire economy sucks because of Bush and Republicans.” It is all they have.
The comments by “Sim Sim” is truly a refection of how the intertainment industry feels about the opinions of Americans (I rest my case)
I agree with most all of these comments. The Academy Awards ceased to be relevant a long time ago except to give the publicists and reporters something to write about. No one I know goes to movies, and neither do I. The show used to be entertaining when Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, Billy Crystal and others had good scripted lines. These recent boring doofus hosts are an embarrassment. About the only thing worth watching have been the segments about the people who died and the tributes such as special Oscars and the Thalberg award.
They should script the entire production and tape it ahead of time, and do away with the goofy and many times embarrassing and political acceptance speeches. Just do a live remote shot of the winner at some party.
The Miss America Pageant is on cable and is dying a natural death. Spare America the same fate for the Academy Awards. Revamp, shorten and streamline to a 90 minute taped and scripted production.
Five more years and this will be like Miss America, also a big deal at one time. I used to love the Oscars, but I can remember when Godfather II was competing with Chinatown. The Dark Knight drew critical raves as well as being the biggest film since Titanic and got totally snubbed. And I can’t stand the buffoons in Hollywood now. What do they need awards for? So what if they’re good; they’re paid a fortune to be good. The important awards are things like the Obies (Off Broadway). These are given to people who make tremendous sacrifices just to be able to act at all.
To the people ragging on Jolie for not presenting – she’s presented in the past, so no, she doesn’t think she’s above presenting. You forget that she’s got 6 kids now. She doesn’t have time to run back and forth to rehearsals and all that rigamorale. Plus she’s prepping a new movie and was in NYC most of the week doing pre-production work on the flick, which starts shooting in less than 2 weeks. She just didn’t have time in her schedule for presenting, too. Next time try using a little common sense and do some research before flapping your gums!
To put the snubbing of The Dark Knight for Best Picture into historical perspective, consider the following:
The 5 nominees for Best Picture in 1999 were “American Beauty” (winner), “The Cider House Rules”, “The Green Mile”, “The Insider” and “The Sixth Sense”. Now ask yourself this question: how often do these five movies come up in random conversation around you, and how often does “The Matrix” (also 1999)? It’s 10 years later: which of these movies has had the largest impact on current cinema?
The main problem with the Academy Awards is that while it proclaims to nominate the best movies, what it instead does is nominate what it wants to consider the “important” movies. This is where the reputation for patting itself on the back comes from. Hollywood realizes that the winners of the Academy Awards sets an important part of the industry’s tone, and so it snobbishly keeps out anything that those unwashed masses like. Jim Carrey at this point has put on several phenomenal performances (”The Truman Show”, “Man on the Moon”, “The Grinch”, “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”): and he hasn’t been nominated for a thing. I mean, just what would happen to our glorious reputation if we awarded … him? Eeeww, icky!
The thing is, society will make works of art important on its terms, not those of the self-appointed artistic gatekeepers. So when they start losing touch and think they can shove “winners” down the throats of the rest of us, the rest of us do exactly what this article says: we walk away.
Why does this comments section read like the same three people are posting over and over and over? At least change up your subjects and writing style a little bit once in a while – then there’d be a better chance we’ll believe there are more of you than there really are.
I think the poster who pointed out that our three conservatives (with lots of time on their hands) linked here from the Drudge Report truly nailed it.
Oh, and nominate movies people like, dammit! Not the meaningful ones that only interest smart people….sheesh. Thanks for this view into Limbaugh-land.
The Oscars! Iraq, Iran, The Economy, The Economy, The Economy…who cares!
This year’s Oscars has ZERO buzz. Bruce Vilanch even admitted in an AP story that many presenters have backed out at the last minute…because they could. (Since AMPAS never announced them you’ll never know).
The movies up for Best Picture are what used to be considered Art House Indie movies. Nobody goes to see these types of movies except film students at USC, movie critics and a very small fraction of the movie-going populace. The last big draws for the Oscars were the Lord of the Rings and Titanic. Wow big surprise! Mainstream movies that were Hollywood blockbusters. Keep nominating films like Slumdog Millionaire and No Country for Old Men, and keep see the ratings slide to oblivion. The snobbery of the Academy will be it’s undoing.
I disagree about there not being any really good movies out there. There are. But people only want to see the actors and, like me, see what they’re wearing. In the past the actors were grouped fairly close together and the cameras would pan to them and linger. Now we’re treated to the long boring acceptance speeches instead. Whether they inject politics or pay homage to their first grade teacher, we don’t care, are bored and leave the room. Can’t they just say thank you and be done with it?
Just allow an award for ” biggest ego of 2008 “. Most of the actors will have to come and all should win.
In response to JACK BART above.
F-Off with your “And I’m from Ohio” shtick. Brad Pitt’s from BFE, Clooney, Depp and Cruise are from Kentucky. What difference does that make? And by the way, I saw the documentary on MILK before the movie was made and thought it was excellent. It’s the idea that MILK might win solely as a protest against the PROP 8 vote that explains people’s animous to Hollywood. Go MICKEY! and NIKKI!
Homosexuals and teenagers hijacked Hollyweird years ago.
Millions of people who are still God-fearing got sick and tired of their belief systems bashed on this show year after year by these narcissistic, incestuous idiots. This nation and world are in critical moral freefall and these ‘actors’ and OSCAR are a clear representation of this. So tragic.
As celebrities crawl from rehab to their preliminary hearing, WHO CARES about these whining rich snots????
I saw “Slumdog Millionare”, thought it was an ok movie, but Oscar worthy? The acting was subpar at best. the story was OK, not great, but OK. I feel Hollywood is trying to push some kind of agenda on us moviegoers. “The Wrestler” was good, but lets be real, Mickey Rourke wasnt really acting, he was just playing himself. Kate Winslett was amazing in “The Reader” as was Meryl Streep in “Doubt”. Brad Pitt was awesome in “Benjamin Button”. “Milk” was, well, you either loved it or hated it. I liked it and Sean Penn did a great job in the leading role.
That being said, I will not watch the oscars. Same reason I dont look at the paparazzi websites or entertainment news. I enjoy movies but the real people who entertain me on the bigscreen usually say and do things that turn me off in real life,so I just stay away from the media perception.
The sooner this hollywood circle jerk goes away the better. America has had it with the ultra liberal views of hollyweird and who gives a shit about what losers like Penn and Jolie have to say. They and their comrades are for the most part a bunch of talentless uneducated un-american cry babies.Oh and by the way the movies that usually win just absolutely suck, If it were a reflection of what people really like garbage such as Brokeback Mountain and other disgusting queer agenda trash would never even be considered much less be in contention. And finally HELLO, Americans are truly fed up with intellectually challenged primadonnas telling us how terrible and evil America is. Yes Jonny Depp and the rest of you no good cowards I would love to have five minutes alone with you to explain some simple ideas about civics and how one should conduct oneself when in the public eye.
I’ll tell you how bad it is. I stopped watching the O’s about 40 years ago because it was something I outgrew, like my bicycle. How could anyone care about these preening, self-absorbed weenies who want to dictate how I should live my life?
Why am I even here? I’m drunk, that’s why.
Why in the world are all these right wing Republicans posting negative comments about the Oscars??? If you hate Hollywood so much why are you reading DHD? Go back to FOX News and the Drudge report.
It’s all about cranking out movies and making dollars alone…. and often a political agenda.
Wow, I bet all the “people” complaining about liberal Hollywood is probably only one person with way too much time on their hands.
Sorry, all of your comments sound too similar, and frankly it’s a little strange that a bunch or right wing, media hating, Hollywood detesting Zealots would be hanging out on a site that talks about the very thing they hate.
Grow up and go away…. or vice versa.
Unfortunately, the bigoted rants from folks like Jack Burton above are why so many in this town can’t find work. I’ll use small words, Jack, so your little mind can follow:
These people are the audience. The audience that no longer pays to watch Hollywood’s production. That money paid our salaries. Movie attendance is way down. TV viewership is way down.
Why? Because bigots like you are not only tolerated in Hollywood, but you are the norm.
Your narrow worldview is wrong. The audience is not stupid. They recognize insults when they see it. They won’t pay to be insulted.
Was that too hard for you to follow? No audience = no pay checks. Insult the audience = no audience. Getting the picture yet?
Oh, and side note: I also came here from Drudge Report. So? In a way, his site and The Dark Knight share the important trait to this topic: both continue to be popular despite all of the “important” people saying that they shouldn’t be.
The reason that me and a lot of people are commenting about the fact that we don’t watch the Oscars? Because that is what this thread is about. If this thread were about who were going to win and people came here stating that they don’t care that would be one thing. But the very point of this article is how many people who used to watch the Oscars don’t anymore. People like me are simply posting why. Perfectly consistent and relevant.
Who wants to hear the Sean Penns of the world tell us how to think politically? The Oscars has sucked for years.I hope the show tanks big time.
Who taught most of you hillbillies how to use a computer? I thought your churches taught you computers were the spawn of the Communist Gay Satan, or whatever.
Can’t you crawl back to your hovels, guzzle your moonshine, and let the rest of the world avoid your idiocy? Thanks.
A Cliff Notes version of this comments section:
1. Actors are anti-american, narcissistic, and prone to bash our Republican gods.
2. Hollywood makes crappy movies that no one with an IQ under 60 (represented very well here) can understand. Give us more of that thought-provoking Paul Blart!
3. The Oscars telecast is too long, boring, and takes up perfectly good Matlock-watching time.
4. Who needs “news” when Drudge, Limbaugh, and Fox tell us everything we need to know, and how to think?
Now, you kids get off my lawn.
Obviously, the Oscars are horrible this year due to excessive movie pirating that the RIAA cannot prevent.
After reading many of these posts I conclude the pendulum is finally swinging to the right as far as much of the Hollywood audience is concerned and hopefully the rest of the nation will follow. The TV and movie industry is in shambles! Liberal thinking is not self-sustaining, only self-gratifying.
Hollywood sucks and I don’t feel the need to hear actor’s opinions on America or politics. They can shove it.
With all that’s happening in this country and in the world. What happen’s to these spoiled depraved scared cow’s is meaningless. OHHH….HOW THE MIGHTY HAVE FALLEN and about time too.
Well, whatever you say about good movies, Slumdog Millionaire is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. I hope it sweeps the whole awards show. I’m an American, and this movie has renewed my interest in the Oscars.
I am not sure what is going on here (Drudge) but I read you all the time. This is a very atypical response to one of your posts. Still the Oscar fix is easy. Cut half of the awards!
Maybe when Hollywood starts putting out good movies, people will start watching the Oscars again. Problem is no one cares about films they have never seen and are probably not going to see. Maybe when the Oscars start nominating more mainstream films, people might tune in.
Dito to hubba bubba
I stopped watching the Oscars years ago. So did my wife, a major movie buff (silent to 80s). For me, it was the diminishing quality product, cr@phead actors, political-correctness gone mad, and pushed-in-my-face politics. Stars used to be graceful. Now virtually most of them are @sses.
I haven’t seen a movie since last fall when I went to see An American Carol. Hollywood and the spoiled, whining babies who inhabit it hold no interest for me. I’m so sick of the whining, carping liberals bemoan all the things they think are awful about the country that grants them the freedom to become famous and rich. With a very few exceptions, they turn my stomach.
HAHA Looks like the vast majority of people feel the same.. We hate the oscars and we hate the “beautiful” people spewing hate about our Country. And their liberal views.. Hollywood sucks..
Average Americans are sick of Hollywood’s incessant attacks on America and pushing the radical socialist political agenda. They’re sick of the narcissism, dishonesty and hypocrisy of the Hollywood celebrities, who tell us how to live while they do as they please, as if they are our teachers, and as if we should worship them, even though they can’t get their own lives in order. They are high in their own estimation, and have no humility nor thankfulness to the people who pay money at the movie theatre to watch their movies, which is what puts them in their position of celebrity and wealth. They seem to think they are gods, and they disrespect the God that made them. They call what is evil good, and what is good evil, and they live by that philosophy in their professional and personal lives. We don’t need them as examples for us; they are a bad example. We don’t need Hollywood. We don’t need to fill their coffers with riches, which is the only reward they’ll ever have when they lay up treasure on earth instead of in Heaven. They can have their Oscars; we don’t need them, nor do we care about them.
LOTS of comments here! You people should pay attention.
One word of advice I would offer to your unpopular movie stars.
SHUT THE HELL UP ABOUT YOUR DAMNED POLITICS.
You turn off people who would otherwise like you and go to your movies. I no longer care for Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, George Clooney, Susan Serandon, Sally Fields, and all others who have expressed their silly, radical, baseless ideals publicly. Had I not known their politics, I would still be blissfully enjoying their talent. Once I learned their politics, sorry, I lost all respect and all desire to see anything they every put out. SCREW ‘EM and their hateful ideas. ( I could have forgiven about anything from Sally Fields until I saw her out-of-control outburst about George Bush a couple years back. Grow a brain Sally!)
My advice to Hollywood? GET OUT OF POLITICS!
The Oscar’s aren’t watched because Hollywood is full of egotistical rich fatcats that care about nothing but themselves and bashing the USA. Screw em, we don’t need em. Shut down Hollywood and let it die there would still be plenty of movies made and probably much better ones.
If they truly wanted to rev things up they would:
1) Cut the show to 2 hours
2) Not allow any acceptance speeches (winner is announced, they walk on stage and get the trophy, wave to the audience and walk off. Who needs to hear these twits speak in anything other than a scripted movie setting anyways?).
3) Allow the public to vote on line for the major awards. Both in nominations and final votes. Let that vote count 90% and the academy votes the final 10% for the major awards.
4) If the stars don’t want to show then they don’t get nominated the following year. Simple as that.
5) And the best thing they could do is this……….
PULL THE PLUG ON THE ENTIRE IDIOTIC THING AND DO AWAY WITH IT!!!!
Wonderful comments here – oooh the irony.
To all the American idiots that have posted here,
1. Did it ever occur to you that Hollywood, not due to an agenda but basic human instinct, feels compelled to preach their politics to you, due to your clear-cut idiocy? Ye of the packaged news/Drudge variety? Your politics aside, seriously – you go to the most simplistic news source available for your news (Drudge), and blindly ignorant yet feeling so strong, you in turn post on a site you’ve never been to! All this, despite showing few of you can form sentences, and even fewer can spell. One would think you’d be the LAST people to go through the effort.
2. You hate Hollywood, not based on the principal of preaching their own politics, but simply because they’re not YOUR politics! And reminding us all that “politics is religion”, you all are worked up, despite the fact that you seek out, regardless of legitimacy, only those blowhards who preach YOUR politics, ie Limbaugh, O’Reilly, etc and any other blowhard du jour.
For all the complaints about Hollywood “liberals” etc, their preaching has amounted to mere seconds of time in the grand scheme of things. And for all the complaints about liberal slants to films, are we to believe that you, stupid masses actually noticed it yourselves?! No, you’re just parroting the same tripe of those who share your politics.
It’s why this world goes in circles. Read books, from a wide variety of sources and get your own opinions.
People are fed up with their liberal bullsht.
Snubbing eastwood because he used a shotgun in a good way?
Theyre getting exactly what theyre asking for.
The great intellectual Marlon Brando started this descent. Then the pompous George C. Scott deemed an Oscar beneath him. Actors: just speak the words as they are written for you. By the way, what happened to all the writers? We have enough propagandists, call in the WRITERS.
Academy Awards? Uneducated, illerate, boring, self-absorbed nit-wits who think they are better than everyone stupid enough to pay big bucks to see them on the big screen. I’m still waiting for Sarandon et al to leave the Country. Yeah, right.
Wondering, to answer your question about why those of us who hate hollywood would bother to read about it and post: speaking for myself, I take pleasure in the suffering of my enemies, particularly when they have contempt for me. Same goes for the NYT and all the other traitorous MSM organizations.
Hollywood is out of touch with the American citizenery.
The stupid, self-absorbed celebrities are boring.
Replay the “old” Oscars if you want ratings.
“The best example this year is the Dark Knight. It won’t be acknowledged for one reason:”
Yeh, because it sucked. I walked out after 10 minutes.
And I thought The Wrestler was awful too.
Benny Button. Uggh.
I liked the Dutchess though. Gyula Pados, the DP, got screwed.
And why wasn’t Christian Bale’s rant not nominated ? That was the best acting of the year.
The Oscars? To take a line from a real movie, “Frankly, I don’t give a damn!”
Hollywood, or should I say, Follyweird, is way past its prime.
I am fed up with films that are mostly anti-American drivel and self-absorbed actors and actresses who think that awards shows are a platform to spew on the public their ill-informed and extremist political views.
I will forego the expected kissing of Obama’s posterior, the usual bashing of Republicans, and the global warming superstition based sermons and watch some real action, the NASCAR race!
When so many people are losing their homes and their jobs, they last thing they give a flying fuck about are a bunch of wildly overpaid media whores do a circle jerk for four hours. And, honestly, are we supposed to think Angelina Jolie is great for wearing a $20 million necklace around her scrawny neck? I’m not sure why anyone reported that as if that would impress anyone. More proof that Hollywood is out of touch with the real world.
I won’t be watching this year. Fuck ‘em all to hell where they belong.
Sounds like a lot of hicks won’t be watching the oscars.
I love the Oscars and will be watching. I think the biggest reason viewership is down is because there is WAY more access to the stars and movie making in general – we have this site, dozens of entertainment shows, other web sites, behind the scenes stuff on DVDs – when I was a kid, the only times I really got to see my favorite stars just being themselves was on the Oscar broadcast, and maybe talk shows, but that was rehearsed – plus, there were only a few cable stations! I don’t think changing the format is going to pump the numbers up, I just think it is what it is… I still enjoy it…
Note to Hollywood: Most of the movies that I pay $9.50 to see in the theatres, are not worth two cents. Isn’t someone paid to watch them and then edit before releasing? It’s pretty simple, if it sucks before you release it, it is going to suck when you show it to the public. Hollywood, your lack of self-awarenss is tedious.
Nobody cares about these newbie “movie stars” or even most of the old timers either. Like it has been said many times, this group has no class, no creativity, no style to call their own. They are all clones of one another.
The old days are gone but can be revisited on AMC and TCM. Buy OLD movies when stars were truly stars and knew their place and what their job was……..to entertain.
These latest “stars” blew it and can never redeem themselves. When they began to believe that what they “say” is important to us no-nothings out here and they were going to “educate” us on the economy, global warming, economical cars and all the rest of it,that finished it for me.
Boycott the Oscar’s……don’t go and don’t watch it on TV. Let them spend their millions that they already have and die poor like the rest of us will. Quit spending $15 to see a movie that is crap or a remake. To hell with all of ‘em.
I agree on the lack of quality in modern film, particularly the excremental puerile pap that passes for screenwriting. I used to see several films in the course of a year, but the recent selections, particularly post-2000, have had few with any power to draw me to the theater to plop down my $10.00. I haven’t been to the theater since “300″, and saw that solely for the visual content. I don’t even rent anymore. They all come to cable eventually.
I won’t be watching the Oscars, I have boycotted for a couple of years now. I’m tired of being preached at by a bunch of overpaid babies telling me how to vote and how to go green while they ride in their limos and jets. They make crap and then want us to fork out our money for it. Screw them. Boycott, boycott, boycott. They can’t silence us, we have a right to be heard. I’m as mad as HELL and I won’t take it anymore.
People are finally waking up to the fact that today’s Hollywood “stars” are mostly a bunch of Leftists who have a deep seated hatred for America. The majority of thinking Americans want nothing to do with them. Sean Penn should not be up for an award – he should be in jail for sedition!!!
They nominate movies no one has ever heard of, they pick the winners no one has heard of and they expect people to watch. Most actors are so full of themselves they can hardly make it across the stage.
AND the movies have sex with no justification, violence for violence sakes, hardly any story line or a bunch of kids putting everyone down. AND THEY THINK PEOPLE WILL WATCH THEM.
All Hollywood stars should be taxed 90% on their income, and in the future, their salaries must be capped at $500k a year.
The ’stars’ are bigoted freaks, their movies are crap, and the whole industry gauges the American family worse than the oil companies.
The American people should drive up to the mansions of ’stars’ like sean penn, george clooney, and ben affleck, throw them and their families out into the streets, and use their evironmentally overloaded properties to provide housing for the poor.
People are sick to death of their lecturing the American people on every topic under the sun.
Screw these parasites. Take their money and their homes. And let them go live in Cuba with their buddy, Fidel!
Oscar’s – os’ kerz. n. television show centered around Hollywood’s self-centered, self-righteous, Liberal moron population. These people are some of the country’s biggest embarassments, most (99.9%) don’t know that they just DON’T KNOW.
I can’t get over the fact that Jon Stewart won’t be hosting the show this year. He’s so funny!
If you nitwits want to see dumb mainstream movies nominated, watch the People’s Choice Awards, Golden Globes, and any other awards show.
Hopefully, the Academy is not going to dumb down the Oscars in the name of “modernizing”
The problem with the Oscars is the studios just keep casting the same boring group of actors. Just because studio heads have man crushes on Pitt, Clooney, etc, doesn’t mean America wants to see them non-stop. Pitt is a vapid bore, and please, are we so desperate for narrative that the media reports every minute Mickey Rourke detail as if it were the Second Coming. He’s creepy, but there is such a dearth of interesting actors the media makes hay of him. It is true as some others commented that there are few real actors or stars today. Thank goodness for Meryl Streep and her rare ilk.
And those of you who screech (must be a “Drudge” link) how much you don’t care, you obviously care enough to post your ravings on an INDUSTRY site. You are ruining this site. Go post on Entertainment Tonight and stay in Indiana or whatever God awful place you are from.
The Oscars did this to themselves. They pick 5 totally unpopular pictures and in most cases, bad ones at that. The Best Pictures of the year were:
The Dark Knight
Wall-E
Gran Torino
The Wrestler
Tropic Thunder
Had the Oscars gone with those (or just The Dark Knight and Wall-E at least), they would had a great night.
Yet, they didn’t – proving that the whole thing now is about making a poltiical statement, not entertainment.
No one wants to listen to any of these vacuous, self-important Hollywood nutjobs share with the world their puddle-deep political musings.
They’ve #^@%*! themselves.
Enjoy the fruits of your labor.
I’ve stopped watching movies long ago due to the extreme liberalism, drug abuse, and sodomy that they promote. And the rest of my congregation at the New Life Church has joined me including Pastor Haggard!
Instead I’ve started making my own movies with my seven children and their grandchildren. (The grandchildren love it and their parents have time to finish their high school classes.) We recently completed a remake of Stop-Loss where after coming back home our protagonist is actually EMPOWERED back the lack of adequate mental health care he receives and decides to go back to Iraq where he becomes a one man killing machine.
Echoing the sentiments of many here, it was about 10 years ago I watched the Oscars show and had to ask those viewing it with me, “Who are those people ?” The so-called “stars” parading on/off the stage were so inconsequential and making the stupidest comments I have ever heard about all sorts of off-the-wall subjects.
The current generation of “stars” is a piss-poor crop replacements for the generation that just passed and included such luminaries as James Stewart and Henry Fonda. I have not seen a performance in many years by a female actress that can match a film I have seen with Joann Woodward or Anne Bancroft.
It’s somehow, in the last 20 years, the art form has been degraded and acting is horrid. people like Jim Carrey, Keanu Reaves, Eddie Murphy — they are not actors, rather, they are actor-like performers who appear in cinema and films of no consequence.
At least half of my extensive DVD film collection is black and white movies…from the great years !
Hollywood’s demise is amusing. If the films that the public actually enjoy and support are no longer PC-they do not make it to the AA. The PC crowd does not get it. Anyone who watched Heath Ledger in Dark Knight and was not amazed by his role play…why bother to watch films at all. Actor/directors such as Clint Eastwood is a master at his craft-if you don’t get it-same thing. This liberalism ad nauseum PC mantra is finally killing the over hyped, over paid, and least productive aspects of our culture-film, TV, academia, arts, and main stream media…RIP.
Despite all the trashing of post modern actors, they are far better actors than their predecessors from the 1930s and 40s, most of whom seemed wooden and absurdly iconic. With all due respect for Gary Cooper and Jimmy Stewart, they pale in comparison to the skills of modern method actors who developed their abilities in the wake of Brando and Dean and the great directors like Kazan. By the same token, I could care less for the clothes they wear or who they are having sex with or making babies with. I have no interest whatsoever in their personal lives. Actors, by in large, are like children.
cartoons are the new hollywood
I thought “Republicans” were supposed to be tough. All this whining about Bush not being around to spew hate at anymore. This type of “Republican” is tilting at windmills just like they have for two presidential terms. They thrive on fear and don’t know how to exist in any other state. And the buzz word celebutards? You guys really can’t do anything more than regurgitate that same hackneyed joke? I won’t be watching, but it’s because I won’t be in a position to. I have watched every other ceremony. It’s just like any other TV show, watch if you want, don’t if you don’t. Stop trying to make it another front in your false culture war.
Why on earth do I or does anyone else want to have to sit there and listen to Sean Penn and Michael Moore and Susan Sarandon and George Clooney and the rest of the hypocritical narcissistic Hollywood ignoramii class pontificate about who we should be and what we should be doing, and then have them go into the same tired Bush Is A Liar diatribe one after another?!? If not for the fact that everyone is sick of them and won’t watch anymore, this year would have simply been the same, except it would be an attack on Christians, Bill O’Reilly, and anyone else that they know nothing about but are peer-programmed into bashing. Can none of these clowns even begin to do the math and realize that the institutions that have been hurt the most, from the New York Times to NBC to so many more, are simply destroying themselves because of the requisite uninformed babble that they all spew simpatico? America is finally starting to wake up, and the sooner that we can run Clooney out of town and back to his little sex castle in Italy, and give Penn a mirror and some lipstick to keep himself busy for the next few decades, the better! Maybe America is finally being forced to get their priorities right! About time too! Scares the hell out of this group, because they will have a lot less money to blow on their usual hookers and drugs! They’re the reason most of the world hates our guts to begin with! Tune out, America! Just tune out and you’ll feel SO much better for it!
Maybe this is finally a sign that America is disgusted with people who read scripts for a living thinking they are actually as smart as the characters they play. Liberal, Conservative or Moderate – we are all tired of this group telling us how to think, what we should eat, and how to vote. It is my most sincere hope that big budget movies go away and thus the pay of this arrogant group becomes more in line with their skill and intelligence.
This years movies SUCK! I will not be watching the Oscars- it’s so yesterday. And The Dark Knight was CRAP. I felt ripped off after watching that depressing violent piece of junk.
Hollywood is dead, long live the internet.
Who wants to watch these hateful lowlifes?
These are the same vermin endlessly touting the Obamination, the Global Warming Hoax, Gay Marraige and the rest of the homosexual agenda, anti-Americanism, extreme Political Correctness, Che and all things totalitarian, ad nauseum.
Memo to Oscar: drop dead.
ohhh Let me put the Oscars on my list of things NOT to do tomorrow. I do not to watch these moronic celebretards using it as one last chance to bash Bush and praise their Kenyan King. They can get lost and rot in hell. You reap what you sow.
I know I’m just a Soldier, but if they’re short of presenters I can act like an actor and would be willing to give away a golden statue in their absence. As a Soldier, I’m used to picking up the slack.
ummmm, it’s hard to believe that a business and its stars that the public is so obsessed with (witness record box office receipts and celebrity gossip overdrive) can be so universally hated by your readers. something doesn’t add up.
Who gives an Efffffing care about these HOLLYWOOD IDIOTS, their stupid movies and their liberal views ….I AM SICK OF THEM ALL !!
There is NEVER A MOVIE I want to see…..it’s all crap !!
These glorified award shows are on every week …never seen a group of idiots that AWARD THEMSELVES all the time AND DRESS LIKE CLOWNS to do it !!
GET A REAL JOB ……. U HOLLYWOOD IDIOTS !!
I grew up in a movie theater, my Dad ran an small chain. Oscar night was a big deal back then and even up until the 80s but the trash movies, pseudo-inellectual garbage and self absorbed actions of todays performers have turned off 80% of the American market.
I hope Hollywood’s “We hate America and Americans!” attitude helps them overseas because it has killed them here.
And Nicole Kidman couldn’t find the “right” hairdresser? Charming. Nice PR on that one. Funny, right now there are hundreds of union hair stylists who are out of work and would have done a wonderful job. I’m fairly sure one of them might have been able to make her highness comfortable enough to be seen in front of an audience. After all, they win Oscars too.
Hahahaha, I hope the Oscar’s are a miserable failure. I can’t imagine why normal folks aren’t interested in a 4 hour ego stokefest of a bunch of people that make their living in a pretend world. Oscar’s or the Democratic National Covention, is there any difference?
Oscars? Antiamerican trash! When it goes under I say good riddance. I haven’t watched a Hollywood movie since 1990 and seemingly I am not missing anything.
I think the turnoff is that it is getting to be contrived and overloaded with self-importance and it is really getting to be forced. There is nothing worse than going to a party where everyone is forcing themselves to have a good time.
With things as awful as they are right now, it is really hard to gauge if people are in the mood for something overly ostentatious or not.
I don’t like the idea of the medley of oscar songs. Because that is not showing these songs proper respect. I mean I can not imagine “falling slowly” packaged like meatloaf with other songs. songs need to breathe.
I likely will not watch at all unless there is nothing else to do.
I weep for us as a country.
So much hate. So much hate.
Why doesn’t some Big star like Cher host or Madonna and give the show some starpower
Wow, what a bunch of sore losers Republicans are.
Look, our country did it your way for eight years. We were royally fucked before Obama even took the oath.
Also consider that California alone has the fifth largest GDP in the world. Meanwhile, the red states have always taken much more than they pay in–so that the red states are basically welfare states. If I were you, I wouldn’t bash an industry–or a state–that is saving all of your asses.
Isn’t it ironic that the “fly-over” posters on this site are far wittier and funnier than the screenwriters in Hollywood. This has been the most entertaining read I’ve had in ages. Thanks to Nikki for not shutting it down, it actually serves a useful purpose to show the disconnect between the bi-coastal elites and everyone else. The wave of all American populism is growing. As the tagline says: Be afraid, be very afraid.
Now that I’ve gotten acquainted with the Drudge “readership” (a term I use loosely) I’m boycotting the Drudge website for the forseeable future.
Oscars? Who gives a shit about oscars?
Ms. Finke and many of you here are preaching to the converted (i.e. me) vis-a-vis Hollywood and the Oscars themselves, which are not unlike politically motovated Pulitzers or Nobels now given out to friends, by friends, for friends, regardless of merits or facts.
Yet I do take serious issue with one repetitive point here. Hollywood filmmakers still makes GREAT movies, as many of the following released in our new millenium attest: The Dark Knight, Lord of the Rings, Man on Fire, Gladiator, Iron Man, The Pianist, The Departed, Finding Neverland, Finding Nemo (anything Pixar, really,) the most recent hit TAKEN and on and on.
You want to rant? Go ahead. It’s a free country last I checked, but be more fair and specific, okay? While it’s true there is a lot of shite out there, they still make plenty enough gems to keep us filling up cineplexes.
Could Hollywood pros do better? Sure, they could do a lot better. But I don’t see them turning conservative or Republican anytime soon, LOL!
But that’s okay. Like Mel Brooks once famously stated, “without Jews, fags and Gypsies there is no theater!” So give ‘em a break, huh? Save the hate for the films that deserve it, like The dramas that make us laugh. Or the comedies that make us cringe.
And on that note, let us also note that many of the worst stinkbombs have their own campy charm as well and, like THE ROOM, even enjoy cult followings.
By their misery can we truly measure greatness
All is not lost. Peace.
I am old enough to remember the excitement of the Oscars when true Hollywood stars with lasting careers were nominated. I know this is a new generation of actors but for many of us the Oscars should be about movies that people actually see, not movies that put forth the ultra liberal, ultra politically correct attitude. It is like a bunch of adolescents congratulating each other, but in many ways, the current Oscar ceremonies reflect what so many liberals in America today espouse; namely, a hatred of morality and belief in polite behavior, a sneering attitude at the military and a bitter hatred of America.
Why does Drudge always report these TV rating fears?
Hmmmm, good time to prop up America’s confidence in TV just after the original DTV switch date and while we’re fighting over who gets stimulus, who gets actors contract…cool.
No Gran Torino=not interested
–
exactly how I feel. I can’t believe they put the reader and Benjamin Button over this Gran Torino. Clint Eastwood should be nominated in Brad Pitt’s Place.
I’m writing a book called, “Why oscars don’t matter” and believe me they don’t.
Drudge hates the Oscars and Hollywood.
Except of course for all the revenue-generating clicks they bring him!
RICK_in_GA
” mostly anti-American drivel ” Honey , …………. You are the reason brothers and sisters are not allowed to fuck each other……………. Enjoy the race.
Regardless of where the story came from, the Oscars are going to be a low rated show because nobody really cares about glitz and glamor right now. They’re more worried about keeping a roof over their heads and displays of wealth and flamoyance are really the last thing people are going to pay attention to at the moment.
But it’s a fun way to spend some time reading all the idiots on BOTH sides pissing all over each other.
NEWSFLASH: You’re all entitled to your own opinions but that doesn’t mean that anyone else has to listen or agree.
Well, well, well…the “CHICKENS” have finally come home to roost…you understand what we mean don’t you Hollywood????.we thought you would.
The public is sick to death of your Un-American crap and bashing of our military and our last President.
How do you like us now????????
I’m clearly suffering from “someone is WRONG on the interent!” (hat tip: XKCD) syndrome, because I feel the need to respond to some of these comments. (So glad for Sim Sim’s comment, and for “Nothing Wrong with Hollywood.” Mibrilane–that’s actually a really good idea. There should be two separate awards for the 1st & 2nd half of the year–this would’ve enabled Breach, Zodiac, and that little movie about the guy in the cape to get nominated this year.)
For those claiming “nobody” watched the Oscars, 32 million people is still a lot of people.
Red–seriously? The Oscars are boring because of a lack of jokes about Obama? If people made more jokes about Obama, it wouldn’t be as boring? Seriously? That’s your explanation?
For those claiming the Academy should just nominate higher-grossing films, I’ll bite: the following are 7 of the top 10 grossing films this year: Indiana JOnes & The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Hancock, Kung Fu Panda, Twilight, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, Quantum of Solace, and Horton Hears a Who!.
Which one of those should be nominated for Best Picture? Which performances from those films should be nominated for best actor/best actress?
If you want to argue *specifically* that The Dark Knight and WALL-E should’ve gotten Best Picture nominations (instead of The Reader) well, yeah, I agree with that. But this year’s a fluke. Of course, WALL-E has an environmentalist message, so that would mean it *shouldn’t* get a nomination, right? (Cue conservative heads exploding). That’s okay, though, its failure at the box office PROVES that nobody likes liberal movies. After all, it only grossed…
$223.8 million, making it the fifth-highest grossing movie of the year.
Misanthropicus–you’re bitching about “The Constant Gardner”? Didn’t that come out in 2004? Time to let go, dude.
Hi there!–You don’t like “lisping little sissies” pushing their “el queero” agenda? Dude, just go beat up some gay people already. It worked for the guys who beat up Matthew Shepard.
Longun45–Milk’s grossed 26.7 million so far on a 15 million dollar budget. It’s already profitable. So sorry to disappoint you.
Paul–”Take all the liberal slime and dump them on an island.” Wow, yeah. Let’s kidnap all the people you disagree with and forcibly remove them from this country. That’s not un-American, or anything.
Joe–Al Gore didn’t win an Oscar. Davis Guggenheim won an Oscar for directing the movie. Get your facts straight.
Randy OKC–there have only been two movies directly about George W. Bush, and one of them, Fahrenheit 9/11, grossed over $100 million on a $6 million budget. We call this “Capitalism.” America–love it or leave it, bitch!
Dunn w. Hollywood: I think you mean “Candidate.” “Candadite” is a performance of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide that has gone on too long. Larry: I think you mean Sarandon. darkmantis: I do not know who this “Keith Ledger” is, but you’re right about Hollywood being biased against comic book movies. Snake: Defiance was nominated for Best Original Score (James Newton Howard.) Watch and root for it! Taken was released in 2009, so is eligible for Academy Awards *next* year. Facts are fun!
Roger Fishwife–um, in addition to the remakes, there are also original movies. Lots of them. Like “Frozen River,” and “In Bruges,” and “WALL-E,” and “Happy-Go-Lucky.” If only there were some sort of award we could nominate them for.
Chicagosue–oh noes, they embrace homos AND queers! Dude, there’s a lot of commenters who hate gay people on this thread. And that’s PRESIDENT Obama to you.
To hell with all the Republican neo-cons who wrote on this blog complaining about movies they “don’t get.” That’s because we can’t make stupid movies for the flyover states. I am thrilled with SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, that is an excellent film and FROST/NIXON which of course no Republican would get anyway.
The Oscars are doing just fine, enjoy…
All you Drudge Report jerks have no idea what you’re talking about. How would you know about what people would want to watch? We don’t need your conservative BS. Our awards show is is doing just fine without you. Oh… wait a minute… Well, the movie industry is doing just fine without your money. Oh… wait a minute…
I stopped watching the (Ho-Hum) Awards because Hollywood has gotten TOO ARROGANT, TOO POLITICAL & ANTI-AMERICAN!. I purposely boycott the movies – (theaters, rentals, tv or otherwise) because I can’t stand watching leftist activists spew so much hatred and the movie makers who produce these garbage! … Besides, the Oscars is nothing more than a self-serving event for people who think they’re better than everyone else. Let’s hope they don’t forget who got them ‘there’ in the first place. (I DARE them to make jokes about B.O.)
None of this matters. Nobody cares about Hollywood any more.
Let’s all not watch any of the Jimmy Kimmel post show special either and get that boorish star-fucking no talent off the air already. He is the very essence of why nothing is GREAT anymore – because we keep elevating mediocrity!
So Mars, explain why the boxoffice is surging then? With the biggest Januaries and Februaries on record? And the top movies are — shock! — violent horror movies (some of which I like, but that’s another story) that you, by your logic — and I used that term loosely — are offended by?
1) Politics drove me away.
2) Most movies are crap. And Political. Which wouldn’t be that bad if 95% of them weren’t for one side.
3) Mainly it’s politics that drive people away. Moore? Gore? Come on …
For those of you who think Hollywood will lose it’s audience, thus money? Ha, did they take out the 400 MILLION for Hollywood out of the stimulus? Or did they add to it. Ya, Dems are for the working man, first they bailout the hedge funds, Freddie, Fannie, themselves, and Hollywood. Gawd I can’t believe how dumb Libtards are. You hated “trickle-down economics” but are falling for trickle-down stimulus.
It’s a mediocre selection of movies – with the exception of Slumdog (good not great) – so the Academy is going to pay the price. Personally I’m depressed at the undue influence of marketing on the candidates. How the dull Benjamin Button can bludgeon its way to 13 Oscar nominations on the back of a 10 million dollar Oscar campaign is ridiculous. Are these the Oscars or the Golden Globes?
I remain baffled at the snubs. How Gran Torino, a movie that embodies the heart & soul of middle America, that was a critical & commercial smash, how that could be completely ignored is incredible. It’s as if the Academy has a death wish.
I will care what comes out of Hollywood when these “stars” stop considering themselves experts in governmental affairs just because they are famous.
The Oscars are nothing but an ego circle jerk.
Let’s award ourselves. STUPID.
Where’s Jimmy Stewart/Harvey?
Why the objection and taking away of the $100,000 baskets given to presenters becaused it was taxed? It’s all about taxing the rich which is the Democratic Slogan. 98% of the Hollywood fools are all Democrats. They should be delighted to be paying that tax.
Paul in Pasadena, CA
The biggest problems that the Oscars faces is the unending weekly or perhaps at least monthly…Awards Ceremonies. To me all these awards shows start to smack of “student of the week” awards in grade school.
First off they let use know what a ridiculous amount of money they are making.
Secondly I have to listen to over paid entertainers discuss world issues, socioeconomic issues, endangered somethings(what ever their pet cause is).
And thirdly they ask for my help with any or all of the above issues. You’re merely here to entertain don’t.
A majority of Americans are trying to put food on the table, pay a mortgage, and keep their children happy. We hope we can take our kids to see new movies coming out but it requires a small fortune to see them.
The reason that I don’t care about the Oscars is because it is political. I don’t mean that in the sense of capital hill (which it is at times), but rather in the sense that great movies and actors will be passed up so that an oscar can be give to an actor who should have received one years ago but didn’t. Or because a movies triumphs a popular Hollywood cause, but in everyone else’s eyes is mediocre at best. I don’t have any stats to back this up, but it is my opinion, and for that matter I don’t think I am alone in it.
While liberal Hollywood employs thousands of blue collar workers (production people, etc.), conservative Wall Street has sent America down the toilet with its rampant greed. I’ll be watching the Oscars to support the entertainment industry. They’re employers not destroyers.
I have completely turned off carrying about Hollywood since their “stars” have become so obsessed with expressing their own personal political views. I do not CARE what they think or who they are voting for…….I am interested in ENTERTAINMENT. Period.
Am also sick of their non-stop marital problems, their face-lifts and their anorexia.
As far as everyone else is concerned…..we have bigger problems in this country to worry about than whether Joan Rivers thinks Anjolina Jolie should be wearing that shade of Aqua. Who CARES ???!!
Not I.
And the movies are pathetic. And fewer people are paying to go to them.
Ninety-nine percent of movies are boring and predictable because Hollywood is too beholden to profit and afraid to move away from proven formulas.
There aren’t many truly great actors around because looks and image trump talent these days.
Politics infiltrates everything and it is inevitably leftist. There goes at least half your audience. And the other half is getting bored with you preaching to the choir.
But hey, you know best. Go ahead and don’t listen some more.
Reason for the universal boredom, is that moviegoers are sick and tired of having fifty jillion versions of the holocost shoved at us. I am not anti-semitic at all, but at some point, holocost fatigue sets in, and with the Gaza slaughter, and Madoff, this is probably not the best year to try and milk more sympathy out of the moviegoing public. Hard as it may be to believe, there are other issues out there!
Oh well, on the bright side, we have “waltz with Bashir”. More sympathy milking, but at least it is not the same old tripe!
To All of the right wing cowards: my family has been fighting for this country since the Revolution. We are SAR’s and DAR’s. How dare you say anything disparaging about any American’s POV. My people gave their life and limbs so you SOB’s can express your opinions NOT YOUR HATE. As far as we are concerned, if you arrived after 1776 you’re a newcomer and you can either return from whatever country you came from or get with the program. And if you cowards ever spewed your hate in front of my peeps, you would get a punch in the throat and shown the door.
Correction: those fancy gift baskets were ALWAYS taxable- it’s just that the IRS didn’t do much about it til a few years ago. But obviously if someone gives you tens of thousands of dollars of stuff, that is taxable.
I worked as an entertainment journalist for years and I’m very glad that I no longer have to give a single shizz about this annual blowhard fest that does nothing but increasingly inflate the already massive egos involved. Die, Oscar, F off and die…
I haven’t watched the Oscars in years and probably won’t ever again. It became too boring and too anti-Republican. Republicans are Americans too fellow Dems and Independants. One can disagree without becoming disagreeable. Also, I have to agree with Hollywood mosty turning out few good movies and most bad ones. Plus, tickets are expensive these days. in Hollywoods Golden Age, people could see newsreels, cartoons, a short feature, then the feature presentation. Now, you get a bunch of adds, and poor movies. Hollywood may go broke if it doesnt recognize the folly of making garbage in such a poor economic environment.
Once upon a time, we used to look with awe upon Hollywood actors. Now, too many of them like to expose to the world just how much they don’t know about politics. And they don’t even realize how foolish they come off. Now the fantasy’s all spoiled. They’re a bunch of narcassistic idiots!
Not interested!
The Kings have no clothes and the people are beginning to realize it! They are nothing unless people put value in them and their venues!
This is hilarious! Normal people pointing out how pathetic and stupid Hollywood and its politicized putrid product has become and all the little liberals who read this blog everyday telling all you neanderthals and troglodytes to go home to Drudge. Lol, I love it!
Gran Torino made decent money and deserved to be nominated as a rare honest look at urban race relations (unlike Crash) but wasn’t. Hmmm, wonder why? MILK is a complete whitewash job; Harvey Milk actually started out as a Goldwaterite if you can believe it, but he was a nasty s.o.b. who outed closeted gays against their will who didn’t want to discuss their sex lives on television. A real “man of the people”. So, that’ll probably win lotsa awards. Hollywood is a bizarro world funhouse mirror of reality and the truth, and then they whine, along with people like the libtards on this blog that they’re losing money and respect. Cry me a river, Hollywood…cry me a river…
How does this industry expect to survive when it insults the moral and polical grounds of half it’s viewers year after year? There is plenty of good talent working as waiters and waitresses in California. The “stars” were just in the right place at the right time but they are too stupid to realize that. There is a long, long line of talent waiting to step in and do their jobs if given the chance but the “stars” think they created their destiny and are somehow better than the rest of us and should thus lecture us. The immorality of the personal lives is 10x more entertaining than their on screen work or their uninformed political blatherings. I laugh at and pity them and their Oscar dilema.
Even more humorous is them getting a great action star like Hugh Jackman to host hoping he will save their asses yet the snobs would never nominate him for any of his acting roles in actions flicks (i.e. the upcoming Wolverine) which will probably be a blockbuster but not receive a single nomination especially best actor.
My list of lib stars who have insulted my politics and who I will not pay money to see their movies in the theater is very long. Their outspokeness hurts them, the studios, and the theater chains. The only way to save the industry is to SHUT THEM UP!
Yikes : I have to admit I was too stupid to ever have thought of reading several sources. Wow! You must be, like, a genius. You are aren’t you? You’ve come here to enlighten us. Are you like a disciple of “Thee One” ?
You couldnt pay me to watch these left wing loons. I use to watch it but now its all about bashing Bush and its too PC. When was the last time Hollywood made a good movie? I love when you see in the new movies gang members who are blonde hair white guys. Come-on have you ever see a blonde hair gang member? They dont want to hurt the feeling of the blacks. So now they are crying cause nobody is watching them. TOO BAD HOLLYWOOD LOONS
Hollywood disdains America when there is a Republican President in office. They insult all of us with their political negativity. Then, when Democrats arrive in the White House, Hollywood is ready to get back in there and help. At this point their help is phony.
And then you’ve got Sean Penn & Hugo Chavez?
There are NO GOOD MOVIES out there. Why should we pay homage and give honors to cowpies?
it’s NOT that the people here hate movies–it’s that they USED TO LOVE MOVIES but are angry with how a bunch of arrogant, stupid, ill-informed, mediocre “talents” FUCKED over what once was the golden goose of Hollywood
you fuckin closed minded pinheads who just attack the “drudge crowd” DON’T FUCKIN GET IT DO YOU
the people here are telling you WHAT THEY WANT in their movies..and yet you defend the status quo which currently is indefference to your movies and your awards shows….
a + b = c
a) when people DON’T CARE about your product—b) YOU LOSE CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
then
c) You lose cultural significance…your politicizing and posturing DON’T MEAN SHIT
you understand hollywood?
but yeah—go ahead and defend the current state of Hollywood right now…the Hollywood that’s thankful that the 2 billionth Friday the 13th movie is making money
FUCKIN FUNNY how out of touch you Hollywood JERK OFFS are—hey it’s your business that’s going down the tubes LOL
I stopped watching the Oscars when Washington and Berry won their Oscars. The lead up to those Oscars had such a cacophony of phony sympathy for the lack of African-American winners for so many years, that it was immediately obvious when Washington and Berry won their Oscars it was more for political reasons than for anything else. For me that was just the last straw. The Oscars are a very sad joke. How can any respectful actor want one when they are given away for such lame reasons. I’ll never watch them ever again.
Regarding Drudge – the Drudge Report is an excellent one-page stop shop for media from all over the world and if DHD chooses to link to it, what’s the problem? The snobbery of putting down people who may have come to this piece by way of Drudge and are no, in the opinion of the Anointed, worthy to comment is part of the reason people feel so hostile toward Tinsletown. Even in the 70s, 80s when there were movies that took a different political or social tack as I do, I still lined up, still couldnt wait until they opened, still went to see them 2 or three times. Because you got the sense that the people who made the film gave some thought to who the film was for – now there is a self centered attitude that if you make an “important” movie, people will come, and outside the bubble people are saying “Were are all the good movies?” Action, laughs, great plot development, complex characters, good dialogue – read more of this in middle level genre books, mystery, historical fiction, political satire. The kind of great stuff that a filmmaker could turn into a screenplay if he could bring himself to read the book – people, even in this age of competition want good movies , good stories, want to come out of the theater provoked and excited. And it really is enough to make the movies – the show has gotten to be a vulgar display especially in this economy.
Who cares about the left wing loons. Its a Bush bash fest and now that nobody is watching them they are crying. Clint Eastwood is one of the best actors out there and the Hollywood loons dont like it cause he isnt PC in his movies. How about the movies that show the gang members with blonde hair. Have you ever seen a blonde hair gang member? They dont want to offend the blacks and the left wing loons so this is what they get. Try making a movie that isnt PC and maybe people will come back.
When you sell a product and you don’t care what your customer’s think…and when you do think about your customers you make sure they know you think they are idiots…… guess what the customers will eventually do? go spend their time and money somewhere else. Hollywood has made sure to talk down to their customers for years and speaking for all customers everywhere….. we are tired of it.
I will not be watching.
The reason they are losing audience every year:
There was a time when the stars had a sense of the pulse of real america. Now they want to show us how bold they are, and instead award mediocrity and ignore the public.
Any anti America movie or theme is acclaimed, and real threats are massaged. Terrorist are portrayed by any other group except Muslim extremists for example.
This is true of most of the TV awards shows for various disciplines. People see the phony marketing it really is, a circle jerkathon
As far as I’m concerned, these pea-brained ego-centric pseudo-actors can fly their private jets off into the sunset.
All of you folks claiming that people aren’t tuning into the Oscars because America is tired of liberals are delusional. I realize many of you hole up in your houses with your Fox news and may have a skewed version of reality, but you do realize America just elected one of the most liberal presidents ever, don’t you? Or are you still harping on that narrative about it not being legit because he supposedly wasn’t born here? Or is it ACORN stole the election? Or is it he’s the Anti-Christ and tricked his way in?
And it’s odd that you’d bash PRESIDENT Obama… last I checked with your spokespeople, I don’t know, say around 2006, we were told it was Anti-American to put down our president. Funny how now that your guy is not in there, it’s Anti-American to support your president.
I liked many of the nominated films this year, but for those of you who say you aren’t watching because it’s boring, you haven’t seen the movies, you don’t want to watch stars self congratulate, etc… I applaud you for having opinions grounded in reality.
I echo the suggestions from a poster upthread. Cut all the boring nonsense like montages, silly repartee between presenters, dancing, etc. and let the winners speak for a long enough time so they do not feel rushed and so that they can collect their thoughts and maybe say something memorable. It should be about them. Nothing else.
Here’s hoping for at least one surprise upset Sunday night. I’ll be happy with either a Leo or Jenkins upset. Voters must know this chance will never come their way again and they ARE deserving of a win.
Gee, Nikki, I’m happy to see how popular your site become. As an aside, kudos to you on your straight forward reporting on the labor negotiations. Your integrity is appreciated and relied upon.
Came on to this from the Drudge Report… Oscars why in the world would we waste our time on this rubbish..
I have not seen a really good movie come out of their in decades now.
What Hollywood had in the Golden Era were the likeable personas of the stars and a definite sense we were all PRO AMERICAN, there was LOVE of this country then, even among the stars. Relativism and multiculturalism seem to have sapped the strength of these two valuable assets. It could always get better, nothing is written in stone. Let’s hope.
A “drudge idiot”.
Well, don’t ask me why, but I just read alllllllllll these comments.
I’m sure it’s been an extra fun Saturday night for Nikki, because she got to go through and read ‘em all, too! Yay!
You people are assholes, no matter where you live.
The problem is that half of America thinks Hollywood has moved to far to the Left, and is trying to influence our political system. Americans are fed up with hollywood nut jobs makind movies that make America a evil place, run by evil people. Why would I spend my hard earned money to see “actors” who call America the worst country in the world sitting in Iran or Argentina. I am fed up with the lot of them they can all go and look for real jobs and work for a living like the rest of us do.
The movie Mongol was better than anything produced in Hollywood this year. The Dark knight sucked, didn’t make it through the damn thing. Hollywood liberals suck. Nobody ‘educated’ gives a shit about a bunch of homos. Hire new talent. Television equally sucks and is equally liberal, no talent there. I see they got that Science Church shit goin on out there, that’s cool, can I join and be like a level 4 Mage in the hierarchy?
The Oscar telecast, just like the posting on this blog (including this one), show that being boring is now accepted as a God-given right by too many people. Writing really funny jokes is hard to do, but if you have great comedy writers like former Oscar hosts Bob Hope and Johnny Carson, your Oscar script is funny. Being insulting to other posters or making mean comments about politicians is not a class thing to do.
In 1973, Charlton Heston was to open the Oscar telecast, but his car got a flat tire on the way to the ceremony. Just before Clint Eastwood had to go on asa panicky emergency replacement for Heston, Heston made it to the theater. Now, the Oscars, like too many movies, follow a rigid protocol. Limos pick up all the major and minor movie dignitaries, creating a traffic jam blocks long. Movies follow a Chinese menu approach, take one plot line from Predator, another from Die Hard and remember to restrict the use of the F word to twice in the movie or you get an R rating.
The surprise movie hit this month is “Taken,” a movie that premiered almost a year ago in France and is already out on DVD in some countries. This movie, filmed by Luc Besson in English and starring Liam Neeson, was considered a loser by its US distributor, 20th Century Fox. For over three weeks, it has stayed in the top 5, with very little drop off in box office, unheard of for a foreign picture with a lot of violence. But “Taken” is different from any other picture out there now, loaded with action, insulting stereotypes, violence and total professionalism in its writing and direction. In one scene, Liam Neeson’s character tells his former French cop friend (whose wife he had just shot to show Neeson meant business) that if this cop had thought more about Neeson’s daughter than his desk, none of this would have been necessary. Then Neeson pistol whips the French cop and leaves, to continue his killing rampage after the white slavers.
Compare “Taken” to “Paul Blart – Mall Detective,” an unfunny comedy that has Kevin James on a Segway, and you know why Hollywood is in trouble. Not because of politics, but because a cookie cutter approach to making “high concept” movies doesn’t cut it any more, not when movie admissions are $10.00 or more, the price now of 3 shares of Citibank stock.
I love the liberals ragging on the people linking to this site from Drudge. How would you know dorks? Did you link to this website from Drudge too?
Hollywood bites. Americans are sick of overpaid actors and singers bitching about America and telling the people how great Obama is. He sucks too.
If Mickey Rourke does not get Best Actor, then we will no it’s political and rigged…and will never watch again.
So if you don’t love Hollywood, you are a hater? Exactly like if you didn’t vote for BO you’re a racist.
FYI….Real Americans are merely trying to take the opportunity to tell Hollywood and the rest of you Obamorons/Obamunists exactly what they think of you and what you can do with your Oscar….sit on it, because we could care less about people who think because they are rich, and make movies, they must be smarter than the rest of us. We have no use for people like that. We wouldn’t notice anyhow because we don’t watch NBC anymore either. You all can go on strike and not one of us would give an extrement.
I watch hundreds of films a year, but I don’t really care about the Oscars. It’s not because of concerns about content, quality or politics. It’s because I seldom have seen the nominated films before Oscar night.
I watch films at home, usually months after they’re out of the theater. I probably have seen one movie in a theater in the past decade, and then only because some friends wanted to go.
The reason: Why spend $40 (ticket, popcorn, drink, parking, etc.) to take a chance on a movie that may not be worth it? And even if it is, there’s some lout behind you talking on his cell. Better to wait, check all the reviews and rent it for a couple of bucks or see it on cable.
Sadly, the Oscars is just bad business. The format of such award shows is old and boring. Since society is bombarded by images of hollywood daily there really is no draw for the general public to give up their time to watch hollywood elite accept awards. If we want to see hollywood we use the internet, watch and read celebrity gossip. Face it with the advent of 24/7 tabloid news and the internet; TV programs such as the Oscars are akin to the Lawerence Welk show. It’s a dying genre in my opinion.
When the hell did the DHD message board become a right-wing rodeo? And if you all hate Hollywood so much, what are you doing on DeadlineHollywoodDaily?? Good lord, it’s like a friggin Toby Keith song in here. I’ll be watching the Oscars and drinking wine with all of my educated liberal friends and having a great time talking about good movies like the Wrestler.
Sim Sim said: “Anyone with a 1/4 of a brain (which obviously doesn’t include some of the folks commenting here, who have enough trouble making up for their lack of thumbs) knows the Oscars are and have been shifting more and more towards a less mainstream television forum … not unlike a lot of other high profile events/awards.”
So… this whole depressing scenario of dwindling numbers and depleted ad-dollars is what The Academy wanted all along. Well then, in the words of G.W. Bush: “Mission Accomplished”… now could you explain Why Nikki devoted a column to the dilemma?… if it is a dilemma.
NY and Hollywood have insulted Flyover Country for so long, with their lack of respect for our values–even Ron Howard’s priest in “Apollo 13″ was the most dour-looking person in the cast. And now he’s about to release another movie, and it knocks the Catholic Church. And now, Flyover Country has lost interest. So, too bad, Hollywood. If you can entertain us with good stories that don’t insult us and our beliefs, and stop pontificating at the Awards show, maybe we’ll tune in again someday. Year.
some of these comments are downright crazy! but seriously entertaining… well done, nikki, you seem to have hit a nerve or two..
and yes, kudos to the commenter that mentioned harvey weinstein. he is, in deed, dragging the award show he ruined down with him. all the oscar campaigns launched by movie studios tainted the whole voting process…
finally, someone wake up the PR staff at the oscars and let them know that they may be making a career change…. how can you screw up an event like this this badly?
geez hollywood leftist? un-american? well no shit!whats really pissing all of you off is the idiots in the middle who buy into all the bullshit.the middle has become leftist light.the entertainment tonight, people mag, ophra crowd & all the idiotic boob tube zombies who watch & absorb this mental extraction like its gospel. nothing is funnier than listening to people who dont know they’re funny. watch the oscars & see americas true commi-edians!
I suggest everyone read “Tales from the Left Coast” if they want to know why many Americans have no use for these self-important narcissistic ultra-leftists and their garbage films. There cannot be any genuine heroes because it may put the values that made this the greatest country in the history of the world in a positive light and Hollywierd wants to feed Anti-Amrican hysteria to the rest of the world who thrives on seeing us as the world’s bully in spite of all the blood our brave military shed for their freedom.
Hollow wood only makes films that denigrate our military, paint Republicans as demonic and the dregs of sociiety as victims of our capitalist system.
This may send a tingle up the legs of Obamaphiles and admirers of Reverend Wrights hate America crowd but those of us who actually served our country understand and are proud of what our flag represents. And I have news for all you Hollywood cretins…George Bush did not plant the bombs on 9-11, you moronic knuckleheads.
Good God.
Is this what happens when an article is linked on Drudge?
Nice to know that his readers are the angry nativist homophobic swine that we all knew they were.
Hollyweird has done nothing more than become the demise of their own selves with their big mouthed elitist attitudes and trash that they write, star, and try to act in.
My family, and many other families that I know, do not even turn our televisions on any more or go and see or rent movies.
The problem with the Oscars nowadays is that it used to be a show where one could watch to “get away from it all” to “escape the doldrums of my every day life” kind of thing. But instead of that, it’s become a reminder that the rich are getting richer and also snobbier and also more liberal and more anti-American and more conservative-bashing. And it’s also a reminder that the majority of Hollywood people are just not in touch with the regular person in middle America, such as myself. While we struggle to put food on the table and hope that we have a job next week, many of them escape into their luxurious jets and have no financial care in the world. However, I do notice that they have a lot of family and personal problems and so it comes back full-circle in a way…..now I don’t look to these people anymore to be “inspired”, instead I look to my God and to myself and family and true friends to inspire me and don’t need or want “Hollywood” to “escape from my every day life” anymore. So, in a way, they’ve actually done me a favor….turned me away from them and towards God and my family and friends….it turns out good after all. I used to be fans of the following people until I could no longer stand hearing their relentless attacks on conservative politians such as Bush and Palin. I’d rather go sledding in the snow with my family on the weekend, then go pay money to see a movie from many of these hypocritical so-called entertainers. I used to be fans of the following, but after endless tirades of Bush-bashing and Palin-bashing I am no longer fans of these: Susan Sarandon (and her boyfriend), Tom Hanks (and wife), Steven Spielberg, Tony Danza, Sean Penn, Matt Damon, Ashley Judd, Sandra Bernhardt, Madonna, Ben Affleck, Ellen DeGeneres, Whoopi Goldberg, Sherri (on “The View”), Joy Behar (probably the most spiteful, hateful venom-spewing person against Bush and Palin that I have ever seen….she’s like nails on a chalkboard this lady…I can’t stand the sound of her voice…no matter what topic she finds a way to blame Bush or Palin for something even now…..wish she would retire soon…) and even Barbara Walters (the way they all treated McCain on their show was unbelievably ruder than rude), the list is just tooooooooooooooooooo long to list…..Jessica Alba, Beyonce, Jay-Z, David Letterman, Martha Stewart, Sarah Silverman, P. Diddy, basically everybody that went to the Obama parties after the election (which is 90% of Hollywood), so there you go…..thanks for listening….and God Bless the U.S.A. and all the troops for defending our freedom of speech!
The same three toothless hillbillies must be posting the same comments over and over again … I saw someone complaining about the “intertainment” industry. Yeah, maybe you should learn to read and write English before you start running your mouth, fool.
I get so SICK of you REPUBLICAN cunts playing the victim. Just die!
Himmy Him, Mr(s). Wilson, and Yikes!:
I love how you neolibs (progressive? what a joke) result to personal insults when your struggling brain cell or your therapist isn’t answering. Oh, yes, you three forgot the best one liner from your leftist talking points (which you are never capable of debating beyond) – listen up my fellow conservatives…here it comes…it’s lib brilliance at it’s best…they call Fox News…Faux News! Oh, man, that one must have taken them years of putting their minds together to come up with. Oh, wait, they probably had to watch the liberally slanted broadcast news, CNN, or listen to NPR. Your tolerance for others views is displayed in your yearning of the return of the fairness doctrine. Unfortunately, the fairness doctrine would be ruled upon by the Supreme Court in its entirety (radio, broadcast news, cable news, and print) and thus would hurt the liberal propaganda machine. Thus, Obama’s opposition to it.
Hey, Neolibs, I’d put my degree in PHYSICS against anything you’ve got (oh, yeah, global warming really is a hoax) and my military training too. You’re a bunch of cockroaches inhabiting two coasts and the “hillbillies”, as you call them, in the center of the country are just waiting for you to cross that line before they squash you. You are like a bunch of lemming racing to be at the head of the pack, you think you are winning, but are really just sprinting to edge of the cliff. For your sake, I hope you stop because there isn’t much time left.
You are destined to lose for you are a party often at odds with itself. Pro-illegals even though they are taking good paying, unionized, craft jobs. Are you intelligent enough to understand why Obama, within minutes, shot down the Secr. of Transp. idea of paying federal taxes based on mileage driven? Two reasons: The liberal privacy groups don’t want to be tracked with the required GPS devices and the Prius drivers who get better gas mileage (thus pay less federal gas tax due to using less petro) would now pay more and the owners of the demonized SUV would pay less. Thus, you yearning to tax, tax, tax was shot down. Obama (who is in over his head and had to leave the White House just after two weeks in office to read books to elementary kids and it wasn’t even on a day like 9/11 hint…hint) serves those in your party who yelp the loudest.
Here’s two of our conservative favorites. Get a life and quite drinking the Kool Aid.
Signed – the “hillbilly” who is your intellictual and physical superior
There is no conservative to bash this year of course its going to be dull. Hollywood is just a bunch of overpaid big mouths. I am doing my part to ruin them by torrenting the sad movies they put out. Everyone come and watch them for free.
The show turned into garbage shortly after Johnny Carson stopped hosting–yes, years ago. Since then, it’s turned into a bomb of immoral and unpatriotic products, the hosts are America-hating jerks, and the winners lately have been affirmative action-type picks. And political picks, too, because you know that Penn will get the nod over Rourke so he can bash the majority of California voters on the gay marriage issue. Meh.
This event has lost its luster over the years. It no longer attracts me, for example, and this is really significant. People of my generation use to look forward to see the real Hollywood stars at the Oscars. They are all gone now, and what remains is, generally, trash. Good luck— you are going to need it.
I used to look up to actors at the Oscars but since they think it’s a place to get away with treason and spit in the face of decent men like Bush and honor idiots like Sean Penn, Al Gore and the ultimate idiot Michael Moore, it’s turn-the-channel time for me and good riddance!!
Who wants to listen to a bunch of narcissistic overpaid American hating actors. I am not going to waste my time or money on people who bash my values for which I hold dear. Let Hollywierd pat themselves on the back and tell each other how wonderful they are.
I won’t watch it because I’m fed up listening to their political opinions.
D’oh! What did they expect with Hugh Jackanape as host? He should stick to hosting the Tonys that’s the real show for gays and women. The Oscars should be cancelled nobody cares especially with a stupid movie like Slumdog Millionaire getting all the attention.
Hollywood is a curse upon this country! It’s all based on youth and looks. What message are we giving to young girls? That you must starve yourself and have facelifts to be desirable? Sorry, I live in the REAL WORLD, where aging occurs and we find value in people that is not based on their looks.
The other reason i don’t watch the Oscars is because i am SICK of millionaires with high school educations bash President Bush. He gave us security and protection for 8 years. And that’s the thanks he gets? So you could preach your liberalism and homo agenda? Sick mother effers!
I think Obama should levy a tax on Hollywood films that suck. That would solve our economic problems in a heartbeat.
The shows have just sucked. They’ve sucked because the jokes were bad, because the presenters were bad, and because MICHAEL MOORE and AL GORE get Oscars. Really. Al Gore.
Does anyone in Hollywood understand it’s show BUSINESS? What practical business person alienates roughly half of h/her audience by laying down their political viewpoint? Even if you believe you’re view is correct, moral, above criticism, yadda yadda whatever!!! You–still–lose. And the numbers this year will show that. Sorry.
Hollywood is so..so..yesterday.
Its weird how one person damns all of Hollywood because he doesn’t like the Dark Knight when the Dark Knight had the best box office of the year because of REPEAT business. Looks like your opinion is in the extreme minority.
I will chime in and say that Hollywood seems to be manufacturing thousands of crappy movies now which deserve to go straight to DVD and never be shown in public, a lot like Detroit has manufactured automobiles for decades (Detroit’s quality is picking up finally but its too damn LATE).
I voted for Obama and I am liberal and I am a big supporter of his and YET, I do not want Hollywood stars saying yea or nay about ANY candidate! Its out of context and unprofessional. What is it about being an actor that qualifies them to influence millions of people about politics? Nothing. Its boring and makes them seem more like a windbag aunt or uncle than a star.
The biggest problem with the Oscars show is the long speeches. Have the long speeches but don’t pretend its entertaining. Have it in private. Then 2 big stars might make it. I wouldn’t mind that when somebody goes over time, a big hook came out and pulled that long winded fool off the stage or have a bouncer in a tux come out and embarrass the fool. If they don’t come back next year, good. They can become known as the star who is too rude to be on stage. How’s that for career?
You can always tell when an article is linked to The Drudge Report. The “Patriotic” half of American always comes out to let us know they are the better half of America.
The Formula That Works
Early Hollywood had it and present Hollywood lacks it.
Early Hollywood kept the lives as private as possible. Present does not.
Early Hollywood made films that people liked and came out of the theater feeling good, or thoughtful, or more inquisitive.
Present Hollywood makes films that expose too much and doesn’t leave much for the imagination. The audience is assaulted with language and images they would prefer to not have….these things aren’t a good formula for invited audiences to return again and again to see a movie.
Not a republican view…a view of a very experienced business individual.
I used to see over a hundred films a year. Now I see maybe 5 or 6 and they are mostly foreign movies. (I’m seeing GOMORRAH tomorrow. It will be the first movie I’ve seen in 2009.) I don’t remember the last time I watched the Oscars. I think it was some time in the early 90s. I just got turned off on movies after I saw 3 man-hating movies in a row (THELMA AND LOUISE, THE PIANO, RAMBLING ROSE). The few movies I have seen since then just haven’t been very interesting. Fortunately there’s Turner Classic Movies on TV. I can see great films uncut and without commercials and all it costs me is the monthly cable bill. I’ll take Ida Lupino any day over these vapid botoxed and siliconed stooges shooting off their mouths about politics (as if they actully KNEW anything).
When a podunk baptist church in Georgia produces a film for $500,000 and it makes 30 million bucks at the box office, you would think Hollywood might wonder if was time to re-calibrate their view of what the public is interested in. I used to go the the movies every week. Now I would be lucky to go once every three months. Hollywood has every right to keep producing movies like ‘Brokeback Mountain’ and ‘Zack and Miri Make a Porno’ but give me a movie from that hick baptist church with amateur actors any day. I stopped being interested in the Oscars when it became a platform for arrogant actors to stomp their political feet and malign the country that gave them the opportunity to become famous in the first place.
Why watch? Why should I waste my time for a bitchfest from the left. Hollywood has no magic anymore. I’m tired of the damn issue of the week which these hypocritical, egotistical people need to pontificate on. I also agree that most movies today are garbage. The movies that I enjoy are looked on by the elites as junk, so why the heck should I waste my time watching? I hope that the Oscars crash and burn. It serves them right.
b-o-r-i-n-g
Crying about being linked to Drudge? Might be a good idea to know WE ARE OUT THERE and we can MAKE or BREAK you. Get out of politics and just do your jobs. You might survive.
No Dark Knight, Gran Torino, and WALL-E for best picture?!!? No thank you. I still won’t watch the Oscars for giving that peice of crap Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan. BS. I’ll just watch Heath Ledger win his award on Youtube on Monday.
Hey I stopped watching the Oscars about the same time I stopped going to the movie theater to pay $20 to sit next to obnoxious people on their cell phones eating nachos and cheese dip. The movies Hollywood puts out now are mostly crap…. now I just pay $5 for the same movies in chinatown and I can hit the remote and turn it off if I decide its crap and not feel like I’ve been ripped off not just in money but in time ( like that terrible Brad Pitt movie Benjamin Buttons ) now that movie was a piece of crap !
I quit watching awards shows long ago.
When hollywood gets back in the entertainment business let me know.
Why would anyone want to watch individuals that get paid too much, know more than the average person, live wasteful lives filled with hyprocrisy. I’ve lost half my 401K, the cost of food, electricity, and just getting by has sky rocketed. The entertainment industry has raised their prices on all forms of entertainment. F’ em!!
The best thing that could happen to the USA is that we get nuked in two areas. Hollywood and Washington. They are both full of hypocrites and crooks. More importantly, these two areas are the cause of all of this country’s problems.
They need Colbert and Jon Stewart to host them. That would generate some ratings
I’ve watched the Oscars since I was 10 years old, and thirty years later, I’m still tuning in. I watch because I love movies. Yes, the show has lost some of its luster-too many publicists, stylists, studio marketing campaigns, and a crowded award show schedule have contributed to a dull broadcast. But still I watch. To the posters who love-America-but-hate-Hollywood-and-its-liberal-movie-stars, thank you for sharing your angry thoughts. You haven’t watched the show in years, you don’t go to movies any more, so why the hate-on? Take a break, lower your blood pressure and rent Tropic Thunder. Laughing will make you feel better.
Hollywood blows, enough said.
These pretenders have no life, just pretend to be a person with skills; one movie and you are an expert.
Get a life fakers? I haven’t watched one movie in two years; as long as the nitwits get political, forget them and whatever studio they represent.
Perhaps the chosen one can throw 100B their way. What
a bunch of nonsense. Think that all you can ever achieve is being a pretender. jw
I wish these REAL Americans would shut the hell up about their politics! I don’t like hearing about politics from them any more than I like hearing about politics from movie stars. Keep it in your homes folks. Or at least in your pants.
As a working actor in this town, most of you are right. Hollywood is out of touch with reality. It’s called “Show Business” for a reason but that name was lost years ago.
Working on the set, one of my fellow actors was complaining about the job. He asked me what I thought? I said “This job beats digging a ditch”. In which he replied, “What does that really mean?” I asked him if he ever dug a ditch and he said “No”. I said, well go dig a ditch and you’ll find out that this job you call acting is pure heaven.
Sorry my fellow thespians, but your subtext shows on screen when you act and it isn’t in touch with every day working people.
Dig a ditch now and then, it’s good for the soul. Tough on the back though.
I saw so much gay and racial bashing and God smooching around here that I thought for a while that Iran invaded us. Oh, Drudge linked us? I see…
It’s not that “nobody cares”. From a paying advertisers point-of-view it’s that “fewer and fewer people we want to buy our stuff watch the Oscars, so it makes no sense to pay $1.EVER millions of dollars to influence people who don’t WATCH.”
The sociology, the politics, the artistic quibbbles are immaterial.
Fewer and fewer people watch the Oscars, and even fewer buy the products and services advertised.
The execs who pay millions for this should be taken out back and SHOT. But they won’t be.
Next stop: Oscar Stimulus Money!!!! The line starts HERE!!!!!
The only things watchable in the last 20 years have been the tributes to the wonderful actors who have passed away. They were real, patriotic, non-tabloid type people. To see compilations of their life’s work was a reminder of all that they had given us, with good performances, in good stories. A real thanks for the memories opportunity. Otherwise, the shows and the so-called stars suck. I haven’t watched in years and don’t intend to change now.
Hey Danielle,
Brad Pitt is from Springfield, Missouri, whose 300,000 residents (including a vast number of doctors, lawyers, librarians, teachers, professors, businesspeople, and college students) would rather you not glibly refer to our fair city as “BFE.”
While this might sound critical I actually mean it in a neutral sense: why should we really care about the Oscars?
i don’t mean this as an attempt to start some intellectual debate about tent poles/indys; foreign/domestic films.
I mean this genuinely – who cares and, more to the point, why should we care?
As far as the “celebrity” goes…the end started about the time Richard Hatch showed up on a deserted island as a contestant on Survivor. Umm…that’s great that Brangelina are adding to their litter, but when you look at celebrity based media we’re also asked to care about how Whitney and Olivia are getting on in The City (and let’s not forget about the importance of what lip gloss ‘Octomum” just bought).
As far as films goes…I’m a Slumdog lover; I’m also a Dark Knight lover. But…it’s not as though any studio is placing a premium on making fantastic films.
…Slumdog got lucky big time in kinda hitting mainstream.
As far as big films go…what was put out this year which was actually quality. Dark Knight. to a lesser extent Iron Man. Other than that, crap which in some cases was enjoyable but in no cases was quality.
Going back to the Oscars…who really cares whether Nicole Kidman shows up? She’s not a box office draw and, to be blunt, her face looks weird.
No matter what “big time” celebs are dredged out for the show there is going to be a not insignificant portion of the viewing audience who, after criticizing dress choices, are counting the seconds until Heidi and Spencer return to terrorize us all.
While reading the hateful, bigoted (if not murderous) comments from True America First, I laughed out loud at his statement, “Just because they’re well-made films with interesting topics doesn’t mean they’re any GOOD”! But it is important to listen to all opinions-even from the simpletons of the world.
holy shit i can’t believe so many people hate hollywood here! it brings tears to my eyes! yes, I agree, if Micky Rourke doesn’t win it this year, than seriously fuck them. Also: Darren Aronofsky deserves some major credit. The guy is hardcore.
Why should Americans like Hollywood, when Hollywood so vocally hates Americans.
you dumb fuckin liberal hollywood apologist jag-offs dopn’t get it
people WANT to watch GOOD movies–but they’re given SHIT that costs $12 to see
what’s the response? if you don’t like it–don’t go to nikki’s site or FUCK OFF..oh yeah and you’re a knuckle dragging conservative: this from all the OPEN MINDED libs LOL
oh ok
people arent watching movies in droves—box office numbers are high because matinees cost ten dollars, tickets cost a lot..dvd sales are dwindling..again, people in this town heaved a sigh of relief because Michael Bay’s production company scored a number one opening with Friday the 13th part 1000000..now THAT’s how far you’ve fallen
and you want us to watch a once prestigious awards show were people jerk each other off for movies we haven’t seen…NICE!!
to get off politics for a moment
Harvey Weinstein really is a big reason the oscars are ruined….previous commenters already stated the reasons why
how to fix this? MAKE GOOD MOVIES AGAIN HOLLYWOOD—FOR EVERYONE, for both the hateful liberals on here and us knuckle dragging drudge robots
I wonder if Mel Gibson will be a presenter…
The mystique of the Oscars is gone forever. The various actors are rammed down our throats all year long on the internet, magazines, tv, etc.
Actors used to be a rare sighting and now they’re a daily occurance. Yup, the magic is gone, although I do think there are still good movies being made.
It is so refreshing to see people turning away from Hollywood. The Oscars are not what they used to be for several reasons.
#1 – Too many awards shows. The businesses (film, TV, Music) have all been bought and reorganized by global conglomerates, and they leveraged the Oscars with all other award events that put the actors in seats so they can fill their schedules. So it is not surprising to have some degenerate rapper sharing the stage with the likes of Anthony Hopkins. It’s tragic, actually.
#2 – Oscar Achievement no longer represents “America”. A lot Oscar nominated films are made by American companies using overseas talent, telling stories about other cultures, like we’re all supposed to be learned anthropologists or sociologists. No one wants to see an American awards show that gives away prizes to ‘foreign’ artists and hires foreign Hosts. Or offers a Oscar to a film because it was about gay cowboys and had a really cool fireworks shot that goes well with the gold trophy.
#3 – US box office accounts for a smaller percentage of the bottom line. The American studio movie is being made for audiences overseas, sometimes with a foreign director and cast– Studio films no longer represent the culture of the nation the films are supposedly made in. So people won’t buy it when they consider history will show Slumdog Millionaire as America’s best film in 2008– A film that has nothing to do with America, except an American Corporate Brand name and a mainstream game show.
#4 – Overexposure. The a-list actors and artists attending the Oscars are arguably overpaid and overexposed to the public eye. By the time it comes down to the Oscars in Feb/Mar, the originality of the occasion is tainted.
In the end, the US audiences will find their entertainment online or elsewhere, and the studios will find a new way to take a few bucks or stick a commercial in your face Who knows, maybe in ten years America won’t even be around anymore and some insignificant trophy won’t even matter.
Name one movie that made a difference in anyone’s life. Movies are a waste of time and money, PERIOD. There are better ways to be entertained then watch a screen or LCD. I go to maybe 1 movie a year and it sucks every time. $8 a person, $6 coke, $6 for freaking popcorn and 3 hours of listening to cell phones go off. Wake up people….. Boycott Hollywood!Go Green!
These awards cling to their own self-righteous rituals and refuse to make themselves culturally relevant. Here is an idea: how about give an award to a movie someone actually wants to watch?
The Hollywood creeps and nitwits should get salary caps of no more than $250,000 per movie. These are selfish, stupid and imbecilic morons who lucked into great fortunes and can only bash the greatest country that made them millionaires. What I would watch is if someone had the courage and the nerve to up on stage and say what a miserable joke Obama is.
Notice how none of these libtards defend the Oscars, or even have an opinion of why their audience is disappearing? All they can say is “Drudge Idiots” or other inconsequential babble.
About what I’d expect from a bunch of pasty, pencil-necked, pear-shaped fags who only watch the Oscars to titter over whatever overpriced fashion plates the “stars” are wearing.
About two weeks ago I started thinking about why anyone would watch the Oscar telecast. (No, I don’t read Drudge, by the way – someone emailed me the article about the declining viewership and ad revenue.)
The show is too long and the acceptance speeches too short, and many are ruined by irrelevant political messages. Are you listening, Sally? I already boycott any movie or TV program with Sally Field, Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon, etc. It’s not that you shouldn’t have your own political views. But they are irrelevant to movie awards.
Where are the real stars? Where is the mystique? Where is the courteous, classy, humble demeanor, and the genuine appreciation for the movie-going audience that affords actors their lives of conspicuous consumption?
The women all look like they’re dressed, coifed, spray-tanned, and bejeweled by the same people. Where is the diversity? Where is the indivuduality? Where is the talent?
There is a lot of competition for you out there – many other entertainment choices. If “Hollywood” falls by the wayside, no one should be surprised. You’ve done it to yourselves.
As much fun as it would be to watch three hours of people who spend more on a dress/suit than I make in a month, I have better things to do in my time. I’ve seen all the films that are nominated (thank you internet!). I hope Slumdog or Button wins, these were the films where I escaped and was curious to see what was coming around the corner. The reason why most people don’t watch these award shows is simple; they are long and boring. The Oscars have always been political; lets not kid ourselves here. This year apart from any other is that people are suffering. Crap economy, we’ve lost our retirement fund in the blink of an eye, and the events we read or see everyday in the news makes me want to hide my head in the sand. You want to attract people to tune into Oscar night? Have every person nominated for an award take a shot of tequila every 10 minutes, and allow them to rant and rave for 15 minutes. Now that would be entertaining.
Comment by Pete — February 21, 2009 @ 4:09 pm
To Pete and other Liberal baffons:
Just as I can rely on a broken clock being right twice a day, I knew it was just a matter of time until some neutered, confused liberal who can’t think of two coherent sentences to piece together on his/her own has to resort to such predictable sophistry. The sadest thing for us human beings is that somewhere deep inside of Pete’s ritalin/marauanna and or 89 Octane influenced brain cells, he actual believes that the drabble he spewed made sense. I am sorry Pete, but it is you who should have his IQ checked or best yet just check yourself from all communication moving forward.
I am involved peripherally with the industry through my husband, and I just love the liberal elite put downs of “the little people” just because they read DRUDGE.
Please.
One thing is, it really pisses off liberals in the industry to read these comments. Well, you need to listen.
“The little people” buy the tickets. “The little people” pay your wages.
If TPTB don’t listen, decide that only Obamiacs are correct you will lose. These hoi polloi are what give you the clothes on your back. The hoi polloi allow you to live in your home.
If you aren’t listening, they won’t be buying.
Last thought – the hoi polloi really hate the Brangelina bs. Most of the nation thinks he’s a “wuss”, and she’s a “homewrecking whore”. That’s why their movies don’t well in America.
HW – start listening if you want to be RELEVANT. Just saying “oh it’s Drudge” is nothing but an “excuse” for you to put off what they are saying.
They’re saying HW is too America hating – well true.
HW has no actors – just celebs – well true.
Make movies America wants to see – ok, you SHOULD.
Tell your liberal leaning actors to stop telling the hoi polloi how to live – well, you know that is true. That is only turning people OFF.
The same 100 America-hating leftists giving each other yet more awards as superfluous and tendentious as the Nobel Peace Prize. These idiots are paid millions to behave like other people while speaking lines written by other people. They’re simply professional deceivers. Perhaps their salaries should be capped, also. Meanwhile, I’ll not pay to see another movie. Golden goose? Dead.
They didn’t even nominate the movie that I liked best, Gran Torino. I guess I’m just the wrong kind of audience for the Oscars. So I will again not bother to watch their self-congratulatory publicity stunt. Just like I haven’t bothered to watch them ever since I was a kid watching them with my parents. Who cares about them? And yes, I heard about all of their Bush-bashing and politicizing of the awards and that just cemented my decision to not care or watch.
I will be 47 in May and still watch the show. Usually for the retrospectives that show the older movies. Todays SAG members politics have turned a large portion of ticket buyers off. Much like the Dixie Chicks, they reap what they sow. I will also watch for Mickey Rourke. If they screw him like Peter O’Toole last year I will stop watching as well.
I have always enjoyed the movies that tug at my emotions. Too bad you have to sit thru so many duds before seeing anything worthwhile. I don’t watch the awards because they always seemed to be over the top, after all, they are just actors.
In my opinion… last year the Academy got it right and No Country For Old Men won some top awards. That is a genuinely well made, great film that many many many people have seen. Despite this the television ratings were awful. So this is your proof that the whole affair is irrelevant today. Call it.
Honestly, where’s the entertainment in watching a bunch of snotty hedonists pat themselves on the back?
Hey! Let’s watch this week’s cookie-cutter bimbo put on a $6000 dress and pretend she’s a Monet! Turn and smile — golly, that takes gobs of talent.
Yawn. We get it. You’re better than we are. Congratulations. Now take your talentless, boring, morally bankrupt tripe elsewhere. I bet France would enjoy it.
PS: Is Sean Penn a traitor? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, he’s an elitist dimwit asshole who hasn’t made a memorable movie in 20 years. The only time he makes headlines is when he’s badmouthing the country that allows him so much freedom…or when he’s being paraded around by some tinhorn dictator who’s constantly wishing death upon the US. Way to make friends, genius.
It’s the politics of Hollywood that has turned me off the last few years. Making political statements during presentation and during acceptance speeches, then awarding movies based on Political views…most people I know thought that Brokeback Mountain was pure trash, yet Hollywood Celebrated it. I used to go to parties, and make my picks, now, I didn’t even know it was on tomorrow….LOL
The best Oscar show ever was when George C. Scott won Best Actor (for “Patton”) — and refused to come to the “two hour meat parade” to pick up his statue!
It really says too much about WhollyOdd when the greatest heroes on film in the last 10 years are COMPUTER GENERATED! We got more real emotion out of Wall-E and Eve than from the current crop of “stars.”
The only live-action films of 2008 which were unusual, well-written and worth seeing were “Caregiver” and “An American Carol.” I don’t guess that either one will be mentioned by the Beautiful People.
Wow, you GOP nutcases would see a liberal plot in anything…I just think nobody will watch because aside from The Wrestler which is an American movie nobody dives a crap about Slumdog Millionaire…sorry India bu we’re not interested in your problems, we’ve got plenty of our own. The Dark Knight represents exactly what a best picture nominee should look like, a movie enjoyed by all types of people coast to coast that had a deep enough story but didn’t slide into pretentiousness. I think the academy should take into account how well a movie does in the box office because it shows what people really like. Everyone liked the Dark Knight, far fewer people saw or even wanted to see Slumdog Millionaire even with tons of quotes calling it great and encouraging everyone to see it. That’s because no matter how good the movie is it just didn’t resonate with the majority of people so who would want to watch it win an award? Snubbing of the Dark Knight for picture and director shows just how far out of touch the academy is and they have no one to blame but themselves for low ratings…and for the love of god stop using pointless words like “un-American” and “traitors”. It makes you sound like a militant nutcase…calling some “un-American” is un-American and it completely misses the point of the Unites States, that everyone has the right to trash it if they wish without fear that the government will kill you…
Now really! How can you all say you don’t care. I care a great deal. The best show that Hollywood has to offer now is their gradual demise. I will be watching the oscars and savoring the idea that Wow! They just may be getting a wake up call. Any bets on how long it will take them to wake up? Incidently, I was not familiar with this column until I linked from the Drudge report but clearly, everybody commenting here has heard of the Drudge report! Maybe the liberals commenting here should take note of that!
Dear Hollywood,
Want to invigorate the Oscars? Stop trying so damn hard to be “entertaining”. Eliminate the watered down vignettes and filler crap and give the time back to the winners. Instruct the winners that they are to talk about the industry, making movies, thanking whoever, and that if they even begin talking silly politics (of either brand) they will be cut off.
Eliminate the lame ass presenters. They aren’t funny or entertaining.
Cut down on categories no one cares about. Seriously, what’s next: an Oscar for assistant sweat wiper to the boom arm operator? Steady Cam Power Cord Dragger? I mean what the hell?
Finally, selecting movies based on left wing relevence and your disdain for America is a sure fire way to alienate American viewers. If your every choice and action is intended as a slap in the face towards an American audience don’t be surprised when then turn the channel.
The sun has set on Oscar night and it was about ten years too late–at least. Calling most of the current group of so-called actors and actresses as such is like calling a woodpecker a carpenter. They are so self-absorbed and shallow that they really can’t grasp how foolish they look to the public in general. And who cares what their political opinions are? Most of them would be well-served if Cliff Notes published a simple Politics 101 with short words and big pictures.
Who cares about the oscars anymore? Everyone knows what and who is going to win months in advance. Un-holywood has produced so few quality movies in the past couple of decades. If you aren’t “politically correct”, you can forget winning. Mickie Rourke should get the nod, but because he spoke out as being pro-republican, it is highly unlikely he will. Funny ain’t it that un-holywood types went from being blackball because of their communist affiliations to being blackballed for not being politically correct.
I for one am very tired of Hollywood’s mutual admiration society constantly patting themselves on the back as to how great they are. After all, these are just actors and film makers. That’s all. They are really not important in this world, but pretend, or worse really believe they are great! Golden globes, Oscars, Toronto film festivals…hoo humm. They are all replaceable and disposable with no effect on the rest of the world. Fireman, Police Officers, and All Military folks are the real heroes out there, not those who are paid mega millions to pretend they are somebody. Who care which skank actress wears what on that day..no really who??
I haven’t seen any of the films nominated for Best Picture and probably won’t. Real life is rather ugly right now and I look to movies to help me escape not drown me in more darkness. I appreciate the value of “important” movies, but they tend to be the same movie over and over again. Wall-E was a movie I’d never seen before! One would think such originality would be recognized with a Best Picture nomination. But I’ll still watch. Paul Newman is dead, the last true movie star, and I’ll watch for his memorial if for no other reason.
That’s right Hollywood secretly hates the very people, Americans that it depends on for its profits and secretly puts liberal messages in movies hoping for its downfall, it is all a part of the homo muslim liberal pro choice conspiracy that want bin Laden to win.
Big Budget Crap movies + overpaid, self-absorbed, overpolitical moron actors + underpromoted, barely watched, undeserving movies = The Reason Why Hollywood & the Oscars Blow
I don’t get it. Nikki’s article was about the show losing it’s audience and when the “druge idiots” tell you why the audience is being lost all you do is call them names. As usual, the people who preach tolerance are the least tolerant of other opinions. My God… we’re telling you why we don’t watch and you’re telling us we’re idiots… but the bottom line is: viewership is down… and WE’VE STOPPED WATCHING. Don’t you think there might be a connection?
-A Druge Idiot
The problem with today’s Hollywood is that the nepotism is completely out of control. I see far too many movies that are written, directed, produced, and , worst of all, acted by relatives of Hollywood’s big shots.
I don’t care who controls Hollywood, but I will not pay to see movies written/directed/acted by talentless hacks that are only in the industry because they have a relative at a higher level.
Here’s a message to Hollywood: Stop putting your talentless, homely, kids/relatives into movies. Stop letting your talentless kids/relatives write/direct movies. Stop putting out formula flicks, Gee whiz let’s make another crappy Adam Sandler “comedy”, (”comedy” for lack of a better term), stop putting out remakes that utterly suck (Day the Earth Stood Still), start putting out quality stories and productions then maybe the public will once again take an interest in your product.
Bottom line is that Hollywood lost it’s ability to tell an engaging story a couple decades ago and unless they start using some real talent, talent that doesn’t come from their family tree, they will continue to decline producing garbage that appeals only to mental midgets.
Seems the pansy-asses who defend Hollywood and its irrelevance have an issue with those of us who point out the reasons the Oscars no longer draw audiences.
Hollywood: Listen to the liberals who ruin everything they touch, or, you can actually listen to what the majority of your audience wants.
No more anti-American crap! No more New York-inside-jokey crap. No more agenda-driven movies that paint average Americans as idiots or hicks, and that ridicule their traditional beliefs.
And, STOP TRASHING GOD! There seems to be an inordinate number of atheists and “multi-culti nuts” in Hollywood who do nothing but make movies whose sole reason for being is to trash Christianity.
It’s funny to read the comments from all of these Drudge folks…if all Hollywood produced was films for these lowest-common-denominator retards we’d be forced to watch Ice Age 8 and Paul Blart Mall Cop: The Return. It’s amazing that people don’t care about quality any more. These are the same people walking around Wal-Mart like zombies, loading up on the cheapest crappiest generic food they can find and filling their grocery carts with as many pairs of Faded Glory size 44″ waist jeans as their EBT card will allow them to buy. America has gone to hell because of these kind of quantity over quality people. I don’t know what’s shittier…the crap movies you losers like to watch, or the crap food that’s rotting in your fat bellies. Stay at home and watch the 700 Club, so we’ll get all the good seats in the theatres. Thanks!
Ken –
An impressive post from your side of the aisle – take it however you want, but isn’t it odd that it’s the only impressive one posted so far?
Keep in mind Ken, that this site is void of the same simplistic, derivative posts seen above, except for EVERY time Drudge links to one of these articles. Crazy, huh? Reminds me of the days when seemingly every single person right of a Blue Dog Democrat railed about UNSC 1441, then all stopped at once.
For the record, I do work in Hollywood, am not a liberal, nor have I ever seen a therapist, nor do I believe in global warming, nor do I own a Prius.
What drives me Ken, is trying to cut through the BS of politics – to see how things really are, minus partisan propaganda. To be able to speak without tagging all of one side as liars, hypocrites or morally inferior. It’s bewildering to me, how 98% of the population speaks in the same dumbf–k platitudes, treating politics as “my team vs your team”. All of whom are coincidentally beholden to every single thing their party believes.
But what’s really numbing Ken, is that for all your self-professed genius, you too fall into this group – scrutinizing one side, while the other gets a free pass. And that is largely the problem with this country today Ken, with all due respect to your Physics degree and military experience.
I wanted to see “Slumdog Millionaire” because it represented contemporary India and I did.
I want to see “Dancing with Bashir” because it represents contemporary Israel and I will.
India has the oldest philosophic tradition in the world; Vedanta.
Israel has the oldest religious tradition in the world; Judaism.
Today, in India and Israel, the most important dramas of human achievement are being played out on the world stage. It’s riveting. They have the same real enemy; the Islamofascists.
In some ways India and Israel are becoming what America once was; a vision of hope for the future. It’s something that they must fight and die for.
Hollywood whines. It has a fantasy enemy; America. It is well represented by a treasury secretary who cheats on his taxes and an attorney general who presumes guilt until innocence is proven. And like the Islamofascists, Hollywood seems to pray at the altar of their Mocking God.
I hope that “Slumdog Millionaire” and “Dancing with Bashir” win the Oscars for Best Picture.
These are great posts! In the last few months I’ve read OF HUMAN BONDAGE and watched the video; read PAINTED VEIL and watched the video; read THE RAZOR’S EDGE and watched the video; read THE NAME OF THE ROSE and watched the movie; read THE RIGHT STUFF and watched the movie; read THE MAYOR OF CASTERBRIDGE and watched the movie; read A PASSAGE TO INDIA and rented the movie; and so on but today’s Hollywood makes movies from friggin’ comic books — the characters are so wooden, the plots so predictable, the themes so heavy-handed. I fell asleep during THE DARK KNIGHT and IRON MAN. I couldn’t force myself to read THE READER much less go to the movie. Two really great movies in the last couple of years were THE HOAX and THE LIVES OF OTHERS(German). The Oscars managed to overlook them last year.
They are just a bunch of the self-important, anti-American, Hollywood egotists. They spew their venom to the world while praising themselves and giving each other endless awards so they won’t feel guilty for participating in their deviant lifestyles. They preach “tolerance” but these deviants are not satisfied with tolerance, they want full acceptance of their sick lifestyles and mental illnesses. In reality, they act the part of heroes while they surrounding themselves with adoring, weak minded worshipers who will never tell them the truth.
I wont be watching. The awards this year are a JOKE. They inexcusable snubbed The Dark Knight, Gran Torino, and Wall-E. Each film deserving of best picture nominations, especially over The Reader or Frost/Nixon. These snubs were pathetic, and just another sign of the academy’s out of touch elitism. And not it’s finally coming back to bite them in the ass. Want higher ratings? Nominate films that people actually have SEEN. Dark Knight got some of the BEST reviews of the year, and was liked by damn near everyone! It shoul dhave absolutely ogtten a nomination.
And for all the republican retards posting here, are ya’ll just BITTER then your boy BUSH fucked up the country? He, with the help of the brain dead republican party have almost destroyed this beautiful nation of ours! becuase of them, and you useless appeasers, millions of Americans are now jobless, penniless, and homeless. Not to mention the two FAILED wars that now h ave to somehow be cleaned up. This country si broken. YOU broke it. And now when a new president tries to clean up the mess YOU idiots made, you block him at every pass. Republicans WANT this country to fail. They HATE American. REPUBLICANS HATE AMERICAN. PARTY FIRST! COUNTRY LAST. To hell with you anti-american republican pieces of shit. How DARE you destroy my beautiful country. I hate each one of you. REPUBLICANS HATE AMERICA!
Maybe people are finally realizing that these people are merely court jesters and are not worthy of our adulation. We do not care about their take on political events and wish they would just act and shut up.
