I know from experience how difficult it is to tell the truth about Big Media. But News Corp moguls need to answer for Fox News Channel airing doctored photos of two New York Times television beat staffers to make them look like trolls -- all because the duo dared to report the news. 
Of course, News Corp squeals like a stuck pig whenever anyone criticizes their people. And Peter Chernin and Rupert Murdoch themselves are thin-skinned. (Again, I know this from experience...) But NYT reporter Jacques Steinberg and TV editor Steve Reddicliffe were just doing their job. And News Corp has plenty of opportunities to take on that reporting in the proper forums. What I don't understand is the corporate culture at News Corp where the response is always to attack, attack, attack its critics in as underhanded a way as possible. (Again, I know this from experience...) It's said that the fish stinks from the head. Murdoch may be unredeemable. But Chernin likes to think of himself as a good guy...

While FOX was crowing about its ratings success, none of the networks attacked it unless you were on a news media analysis show such as FOX News Watch or Reliable Sources. Now you have the biggest news network falling on hard times because the others made some changes, and that network, which could be covering Third Parties for President in order to distance itself from the others, instead attack the others ratings increases. No wonder why their ratings are doing great.
Are we gonna get this same kind of outrage when MSNBC does the same sort of thing? I hope so. This has nothing to do with Hollywood, Nikki.
Nikki — Where were the positive articles in the Times when Fox News had atmospheric ratings (by cable news standards)? Let’s face it: The Times loves to pick on Fox as much as Fox loves to pick on the Times. That being said, the doctored photos are asinine.
I must admit that it was a pretty stupid move on the part of Fox News, and whoever did, or ordered, the doctoring should be fired. Not just for the bad taste of doing it, but for making their own network look foolish and childish too, and making the photos more important than the story they were discussing.

my God, nikki, that list could be a mile long. sometimes I watch a few of the shows on fox just for fun but get a really sinking feeling in my stomach very quickly when the bile just keeps pouring out. it’s such a mean spirited group of pundits, really warped for the most part.

Actually, someone pointed out to me on my blog that it simply a matter of whatever program they used to resize the jpg that it changed the colors and distorted it. Someone did not know what they were doing. But it’s an easy mistake. A lot of photo editing programs will do this if you change the dimensions like they did (from square to rectangle).

That is too funny as he wants to triple the taxes on everyone earning more than 25,000 a year, nationalize health care thus making Doctors work for say 25,000 a year which is what you would have to do. How many doctors would stay at work for that. Or you could double the SSI and make that a health inssurance plan too. Double the capital gains tax on income that you make when you sell your house or retire and start using your 401K or just investing in the stock market.
As for as Judith Miller and her reporting so what. Every intelligence network around the world thought Saddam had the weapons. So did his generals who were asking him to release them during the invasion. So who lied. It was Saddam. He wanted everyone to think he had them and guess what, they did. Are you kidding me? Those photos are SO doctored that no one could possibly think they’re actual, untouched photographs. This wasn’t some subtle, insidious attempt to make someone like some way; it looks like someone was messing around and it ended up on the air. So, to mock Steinberg’s distortions, they provided some distorted images (more like “caricatures”) of the Steinberg (and Reddicliffe). Come on people… lighten up! These were so over-the-top that no one in their right mind could not possibly think these were the real photographs of these men. It was a joke! Any one familiar with the concept of humor? No one at FNC was trying to deceive anybody. Sheeze… and hey, where are the accusations that FNC wants you to believe that Steinberg is actually a real poodle? They did provide a Photoshop’d image of that as well! Oh well… In the end, just more of the typical manufactured dissent by the usual suspects from the Left.
These photo’s couldn’t have come out looking like that from a simple resize and hue.
Looking at Jaques photo:
The head has been stretched, but the ears have been shortened and pulled. The forehead has also been squished.
The nose has been widened dramatically, as has the chin.
These effects are working at opposite directions, had the photos been merely stretched he would just look skinny or a bit wide.
Dark bags have been brushed under the eyes, and the teeth specifically yellowed. You can see the effects of brush strokes on the hairline, as well as on the darkened sections under the eyes.
I like it, he looks like a deranged popeye.

We’re at a point now where people not only expect to be lied to by the media – they enjoy it. They hunger for it. They need that surge of hate and fear to get them through the day. The more obvious the bias in their favor, the more comforted they feel. It’s free market choice at its best – you get to choose only the lies that you want to hear! And now we have the technology to go on the internet and defend those lies to the death, hooting and hollering and waving flags like our political parties are football teams instead of representing our deeply held principles. Democracy becomes a sporting event. Truth doesn’t sell – in fact, the whole concept is suspiciously pinko.
Fox News panders to this basic need full force – and who’s to say that isn’t a good business strategy? Lies, smears and propaganda are what Americans love, not truth, and it’s good business to give them what they love and plenty of it. It looks like they took square photos and squeezed them into a rectangular shape to fit the format of their chyrons. That elongated the faces. The colour shift is common when photos are aired on television. I’ll lay odds the colour was different depending on what TV was airing and local signals.
any photoshop artist will be able to tell you the photos were doctored.
any accidental distortion or colour changes will occur uniformly over the images. clearly this is not the case here.
apart from the selective distortion of features, check out mr steinberg’s hair. the lower portion has been cloned [in photoshop].you can see that hair texture is exactly the same as the portion above. the same photoshop clone tool was used for mr reddicliffe’s forehead. you can see repeating texture patterns in the middle of his forehead.
the artist used the photoshop burn tool to darken areas around the eyes and mouth. the burn tool not only darkens the tone but also saturates the colour. it’s more obvious in mr steinberg’s photo where his skin colour is generally pinkish but the darkened areas are brown.
for anyone who doubts that the photos are doctored, how can you explain mr reddicliffe’s missing fringe?
