LOS ANGELES (November 23, 2009) – The Producers Guild of America (PGA), a national non-profit trade group committed to protecting the rights and credits of producers in film, television and new media, announced today that award-winning science-fiction and fantasy storyteller Joss Whedon will be honored with the 2010 Vanguard Award at the 21st Annual PGA Awards ceremony on Sunday, January 24, 2010 at the Hollywood Palladium.
Whedon is a producer, writer, director, and creator for such hit television programs as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel,” “Firefly,” and “Dollhouse.” He has written several feature film scripts including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Toy Story, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Alien Resurrection and Titan A.E. and is author of the cultish Dark Horse comic book series “Fray.” Whedon also created and produced an Internet sensation with the musical superhero spoof “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog,” which stars Neil Patrick Harris.
The PGA’s Vanguard Award recognizes achievements in new media and technology. Previous recipients of the prestigious Vanguard Award include George Lucas, James Cameron, and John Lasseter, who is also being awarded the 2010 David O. Selznick Achievement Award in Motion Pictures by the PGA this year, MySpace CEO and co-founder Chris DeWolfe and president and co-founder Tom Anderson, YouTube founders Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Will Wright.
“Joss Whedon has mastered the art of melding the newest technology with inspired storytelling, truly exemplifying the spirit of the Vanguard Award,” said David Friendly and Laurence Mark, co-chairs of the PGA Awards.
“This is an honor I didn’t expect and probably don’t deserve,” said Joss Whedon. “The truth is, I’ve never actually guarded a van. But I am a super-total visionary, so that fits. I’m ready to take my place next to the guys who made ‘THX 1138’ and ‘Tin Toy’ (Did they ever do anything else, btw? They showed such promise.). This is a time of radical change in media delivery and content, and I’m honestly proud the PGA has singled me out as someone who sort of knows what’s going on.”

PT Barnum not available?
I love the fact that Whedon, always keep his critical sense and humour whatever he says! It’s true that THX1138 was very promising! and the van joke is excellent, I can’t beleive that some people only take what he says at the first degree!
Umm, wow!!
Way to go Joss. I have no doubt in my mind that you deserve this. Please continue to be my connection to the geek world. It’s where i meet the best people and you are a usually universal topic. Thanks for all your work.
Yeah… he lets Captain Hammer guard the vans for him.
Yawn. Why would they waste their precious time on this – isn’t it a little early? But, worry not – Whedon will once again use the speech at this event to denigrate and mock people of faith, all the while casting himself as the eternally victimized atheist.
Funny… I don’t remember Whedon openly mocking religious people, his comments were well-modulated and respectful in his commentary for the Firefly episode “Objects in Space.”
On the other hand, congratulations Joss. You’ve deserved the award for several years now.
Wow, that comment just kinda came out of left field there.
Darn it though, people of faith are so much fun to denigrate and mock…
I am a devoted whedonist, both as a fan and as a professional, as I am a writer too. And besides, I am a faitful, proud muslimah _the scarfed kinda one.
I never felt mocked by his work neither his personal speeches. Furthermore, I was pretty satisfied of his sight on Magics in Buffy as a serious, sacred thing, opposite to the harrypottery fashionistas. So I cannot see your point. Blessed be the ones with sense of humor, because they shall know the difference between fiction and religion.
I wish the producers would honor him by PRODUCING SOMETHING OF HIS.
A new series of Firefly would be a good start.
Yay! Go Joss!
Jeez, what an obnoxious A-hole.
Um, as a “person of faith” I gotta say… Yay Joss! We love your work! Keep it up!
Ohhh..ok…now i see why its been so hard for me to sell one of my scripts to a studio/producer! Because I dont look like a fucking troll like this guy.
Nope, probably because the scripts suck! Just sayin…
His Chinese restaurant in beverly hill is also quite good. Check it out if you get the chance, this guy is a real renaissance man!
@savvydude: Imagine my surprise and delight when I set aside the beautiful words of Governor Palin only to stumble upon your articulate, witty post! Why *would* the PGA honor a man who has written and created some of the most influential television in recent memory, found an Internet-based distribution model that is actually profitable and worked tirelessly on any number of social issues??? Ridiculous! You are savvy indeed, good sir!
May I ask one quick question only as a point of clarification? Do you mean the “people of faith” who blow themselves up in the name of God, the “people of faith” who deny the existence of evolution, the geological record and the existence of climate change or the “people of faith” who sanctimoniously rail against the rights of gays while hiking the Appalachian trail to Argentina, paying off the husbands of women they’ve had illicit affairs with and/or tapping their feet in airport rest rooms looking for a handjob?
Just curious!
Yeah, because this is the direction this conversation needed to head in…
Congratulations again, Joss, it is indeed well deserved.
Wow, now we know why Dollhouse was canceled – Joss is apparently a faith-mocker who looks like a troll. And we know the American public won’t stand for that. Right.
In all seriousness, well done, PGA, for understanding what Fox apparently never will . . .
How did faith get into this?
Yay Whedonites of all faiths, even those with no faith unless it be not in Joss Whedon. Please bring back ‘Dollhouse’.
Faith was a potential slayer who was called up when Kendra, the haitian slayer, was killed by Drusilla in Buffy 2nd Season ep. 20. But Faith didn’t get into until 3rd. season.
_sorry. I had to do this.
