“I don’t do geek” – we know already!
Love the blog, but enough with the don’t do geek, when hollywood’s biggest properties are “geek”! Take a look, what were the biggest films of the last few years, what are all the studios banking on this year? You think they want to go to comic-com, they HAVE to go. Geek culture as you call it has become popular culture.
Is “Iron Man” really geek at this point? Sure feels mainstream to me…
Geek is waiting in line for the 3:30am showing of “Star Wars: Episode 1″ at Mann Village opening day..
Like I did.

Jackson claimed he was dumping the movie because they tried to lowball him on his acting fee. Now he’s staying put, I have to wonder whether they upped his price or else Jackson finally realized he hasn’t been responsible for a hit movie since… well… ever and went crawling back to Marvel with his tail between his bowed legs.
Wasn’t that obvious when he appeared at the end of the film, claiming that he was the Iron Man?
ya…you don’t go horror either.
awesome news though.
I’m not the first to say this but Mr. Jackson appeared in the role already after IRON MAN’s end credits . It kind of set-up the sequel in a sense.
So a confirmation of his casting now means it involves the character (and his agency) in the movie’s plot.
Done geeking.
Wahooooooooooo!
Somewhere, the Hoff is weeping.
I think this a great move by all parties included. While people like Mahogany can keep on the hate train (name me one movie where you sat there and said “man, sam jackson is a terrible actor who ruined this movie”)- I am personally happy to see the right casting choice was made.
VERY excited for Iron 2 et al.
Justin,
There was a lot of drama around whether Marvel would pay him enough to have him come back over the past couple of months. That’s why Terrance Howard is no longer in the film (replaced by Don Cheadle), and why both Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell have yet to be cast.
Marvel’s been a little tight with their money recently, but after checking their fourth quarter gains, I hope they open that stash up a little more to secure some great talent in future flicks.
Done Super-Geeking.
LOVE the idea of Sam J. in a supporting almost ensembly role in this pic. Since he almost never carries one, I’m glad to see him in a smart movie (as IM2 will be). PLEEZ N, just go geek already!
Hey… I think its time to give up the “I dont do geek” thing. Your doing “geek” when you post that you “dont do geek”, and you have posted that a lot as of late. You do “do geek”. Don’t run from it. Own it.
you dont do geek
but you do C**t really well
@Doug Fury:
Unbreakable.

An over-rated actor whose notoriety for having the biggest box office than any other actor is due only to his supporting roles and cameos (a la JURASSIC PARK)rather than playing the lead. Hence his involvement had absolutely nothing to do with any of the movies’ successes. Hence he doesn’t deserve anywhere near the money he makes. I wouldn’t pay him much more than a buck fifty myself. He has, however, starred in more than his fair show of shitty movies and been terrible in them – THE SPIRIT and LAKEVIEW TERRACE (the latter of which should have been released in the early 1990s) being the most recent examples. I could go on and list many more but Kool-Aid drinkers like yourself aren’t worth the effort.
please!!! no more SAM Jackson!!
lazy casting equals lame movies!
I see Sam Jackson in a movie and I automatically think it will be over-rated or possibly suck. He’s done way too much crap for cash for me to think that highly of him. He’s a decent to good actor who generally makes terrible decisions.
Now, saying that, Iron Man was one of the best written films of ‘08. The tightest script of any of the super hero movies.
Can’t wait for the sequel.
I just think it’s so absurd and disingenuous every-time some commentator/writer says that all the “geeks” will flock to the comic-book movies. It’s just unfunny and lame.
Nice “leak” there. Good job, Nikki.
Enough with the “I don’t do geek” prefaces!
I have to agree–NO MORE SAM JACKSON. He is not Nick Fury. Nick Fury is a white guy with an eyepatch who fought in WW2. James Caan, Gene Hackman. Ya wanna go with a black guy, then Jim Brown. He’s still around. He’s an action hero. But puhleeze, Sam Jackson is soooo boring.
For those wondering why Sam Jackson, it’s because in the comic world, there are a million different stories and iterations of characters (four Robins… Perhaps five if you include The Dark Knight Returns…) The Nick Fury they decided to harness is this one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultimate_Nick_Fury
Now try to tell me Sam Jackson shouldn’t play him.
The Nick Fury from the MARVEL ULTIMATE comic storyline was SPECIFICALLY TAILORED TO LOOK LIKE ACTOR SAMUEL L. JACKSON WITH HIS PERMISSION years before the Iron Man movie was even in production…
ugh I was hoping they were going to cast someone else. I’m just tired of the Sam Jackson shtick – I already know the performance he’s going to give. Couldn’t they have come up with someone more exciting…
You “don’t do Geek”, Nikki? Oh, come on… your Oscar blog read like something off of AICN. Your superior attitude is totally unwarranted- and reminds me of the same smugness I see behind all of the worst comic book movie adaptations (not to mention the unearned pretensions behind most of this year’s Oscar nominees- can anyone really say that BEN BUTTON is a better movie than, say, IRON MAN?) I actually agree with the people complaining about too many superhero movies-juist like I agree with that section of readers that complain about too many superhero COMICS! But this IS where the top talent (in BOTH fields) is working now, and looking down on the whole body of work is just leaving you on the side of the road, looking clueless…
“I don’t do geek” : that’s not what you said last night!
It’s too bad you don’t do geek, Nikki.
Marvel Studios’ plan to interweave their franchise pictures into a larger, shared-universe tapestry is one of the more ambitious and exciting production initiatives in the past several years. As Marvel does not have a slate of films beyond these movies, they have no box office cushion to fall back on if one or two of these movies underperforms. It’s a huge financial risk and I think that it is one of the more interesting ongoing stories in the entertainment business today. It is too bad your prejudices have blinded you to that.
wow. Someone working with Marvel Studios got what they needed “money wise” ?
I think he’s overrated and chews the scenery. He’s not the only black actor for that role!
I got nothing against Samuel Jackson but I think hes over-played and over used and hes a bad choice for Nick Fury. Nick Fury is white, it’s OK to hire white actors.
If I’m not mistaken, Sam Jackson likes to brag that he has the largest box office total of any actor or some nonsense to this effect. If true that’s partly due to the fact that he did some of the Star Wars movies. Of course, he was so wooden in that role that he would have started a fire with just a spark.
The Star Wars movies he was in were successful at the box office DESPITE his participation not because of it.
