UPDATE: So last year I couldn't bear to watch Marty Scorsese paying tribute to Steven Spielberg for the bogus Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Cecil B. Demille Award, and vice versa ("There's my inspiration right there," Steven said about Marty). It was too painfully embarrassing. I don't know why great Hollywood talents don't just say no to dumb Hollywood awards bestowed by even dumber Hollywood organizations. According to today's announcement, for the 2010 Golden Globes, it'll by Marty's turn to be honored. I hope he doesn't miss the opportunity to plead for more film financing -- something Spielberg didn't do -- because then I'd congratulate him for the reality check and so would every filmmaker caught in the current credit crunch. Here's the HFPA statement:
HOLLYWOOD, CA--(Marketwire - November 12, 2009) - Martin Scorsese will be honored at "The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards" on January 17 with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his "outstanding contribution to the entertainment field." The award is voted by the Board of Directors of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The show, hosted by Ricky Gervais, will be broadcast live coast to coast Sunday, January 17 on NBC (5 to 8 pm PT, 8 to 11 pm ET) from The Beverly Hilton.
Scorsese received two Golden Globe Awards for "Best Director of a Motion Picture"; for "The Departed" and "Gangs of New York." He received five additional Golden Globe nominations, including four as Best Director ("Casino," "Age of Innocence," "Goodfellas," and Raging Bull") and one for Best Screenplay for "Raging Bull" (with Nicolas Pileggi).
Recent Cecil B. DeMille winners include Steven Spielberg (2009), Warren Beatty (2007), Anthony Hopkins (2006), Robin Williams (2005) and Michael Douglas (2004).

On the minus side, Scorsese is a recent defender of child rapist Roman Polanski
Agreed. I’m a professional kiss ass but I’d still shout a big FU to these iconic supporters of the douchy child sodomizer.
What did Nicolas Pileggi have to do with Raging Bull? I’m sure they mean Paul Schrader.
Nicholson’s Cecil B. DeMille award speech was hilariously legendary. That’s how you accept a dumb award!
Everyday I get a little pick-me-up from Nikki’s sarcasm and unvarnished commentary. Hollywood can’t sell dreams to financiers today, and everyone is getting squeezed as a result. This story isn’t likely to get better soon. When the finest film makers of a generation have trouble getting serious fare financed, that speaks volumes about what other mature artists are now facing. Oh, and always look to what the smartest guy in the room does: David Geffen took his chips and left the film business.
It always bugs me when people like Mick Jagger get knighthoods from the Queen, like they ended up buying into the establishment, elitist brainwashing they rebelled against so expertly years ago.
Same goes here for Martin Scorcese, who at one time, was a dangerous, demented filmmaker…they let themselves get swallowed up. Not for money, I guess, something else….It’s sad
It’s called the aging process. Most people, not just celebrities, undergo this process. It tones everything down and puts life into perspective.
Plus, they’re filthy rich at this point. Most of the rebellion came from a time and place in which they were not a part of the establishment and potentially had little hope to climb.
If you survive in Hollywood long enough, somebody is surely going to give you an award…
I love when Nikki attacks the Golden Globes. As a former entertainment reporter with Westwood One, that was the awards show I hated the most. It’s all pretentious bullshit — the stars kowtowing to the Globes; the network airing it pushing advertisers big time by overly hyping the shows as if it really means something –and the unsuspecting public thinking the “Foreign Press” is some huge group of thousands of members, not knowing less than a hundred even vote(don’t forget some can’t vote because they aren’t current with their dues.) I do blame the kiss-ass celebrities the most. By now, they KNOW what the Globe really are —worthless. I interviewed Bill Cosby recently and he blasted them for their behavior when they came soliciting an ad from him in order to get a win back in The Cosby Show days. Shameful jerks!
HFPA makes big bucks from the license fee they receive from the network to air the show. The license fee is based upon ratings. Ratings go up the more A list celebrities that appear on the show. This is the only source of funding for HFPA.
“Hmmm, I wonder who we should nominate???”
The HFPA hacks are such bottom-feeding lame-os. All 82 of them or whatever they’re down to now.
The questions they ask at the junkets are so pathetically bland and fawning, even the stars are embarrassed. (No mean feat with Hollywood talent!) All these low-grade hacks want to do is get their goodie bag and have their picture taken with the star.
The HFPA hack down the road has a yard sale every six months, selling off all his freebies. Brokeback Mountain windcheater anyone? Julia and Julia gym bag?
And the stars oblige because the Globes are theoretically influential at Oscar time. They should called the circle jerks or the reacharounds.
