• I had dinner with Julius once, and I think he’ll make an awesome FCC director. His job for Barry Diller was to look ahead 10 or 20 years to where communications is moving from both a technology and business perspective. The guy is absolutely brilliant, and his wife is in the documentary business.

• Am I the only person who sees the appointment of a person who holds these views as antithetical to a free, diverse, and independent media in America? The FCC isn’t just about TV and radio. It’s about private versus public Internet, net neutrality, wiretap technology, download speed, formats, community and corporate responsibility, censorship, minority ownership, low-power transmisssion, frequency assignment, digital spectrum management, Left vs. Right balance, and other silly issues that affect the public’s access to information. I’m sorry it’s not as exciting as how much money Michael Bay makes by turning celluloid into turds, but there it is.

• Well, actually, no confirmation votes for anyone will be happening until after the Sotomayor hearings in late July. So continued stasis is on the FCC menu through the end of summer.
