UPDATE: I've been to the White House Correspondents Dinner. And, if history is any judge, then comedians asked to perform there seem to do best when they joke with gentle jibes rather than go for the jugular. Someone should have reminded Wanda Sykes about that before tonight. Because not since Don Imus roughed up Bill Clinton at the annual event has a comedian been so mean-spirited. Certainly, Stephen Colbert wasn't to George W Bush. But, unlike Imus or Colbert, Wanda Sykes didn't lay a glove on the sitting president Barack Obama. Instead, she reserved her barbs for people who weren't there: Dubya, John McCain, Dick Cheney, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. I'm not saying pols and media don't deserve to have the piss taken out of them. But even watching the WHCA dinner on television, viewers saw the room grew very quiet and then erupt as Sykes seemed to cross the line with what was more harsh partisanship than funny comedy. At one point, the C-SPAN cameras caught Fox News commentator Glenn Beck sitting stone-faced after Sykes had singled out one conservative after another for her insults. Even Obama seemed to look uncomfortable at times. Of course, the WHCA had to know what they were getting since Sykes has gone on late night television being just as outspoken. Which is why, when she was announced as the performer, I wondered why the journalists had chosen her unless they wanted her to cause controversy, which she certainly did tonight.
Sykes started off speaking admiringly of first Barack Obama and then wife Michelle, and lobbed gently funny softballs their way ... about Obama's basketball prowess ... and Michelle's bare arms ... and their history-making presidency. ("This is amazing, you're the first black president. I'm proud to be able to say. But that's unless you screw up. And then it's going to be, 'What's up with that half-white guy? Who voted for the mulatto. What the hell?' ") She also poked fun at Nancy Pelosi, saying it was the House Speaker's idea for Obama and VP Joe Biden to grab hamburgers for lunch the other day. ("You guys can't hang out out together. What'd she say, 'Why don't you boys go out and get a bite'? You know she was a Hillary supporter.")
But the comedian's tone changed dramatically when she went after former President George W Bush. "I gotta say, he broke a lot of stuff. You thought you were moving into a new home, and you've got a fixer-upper. And there are a lot of things that need to be fixed." About the criticism Obama received from animal rights activists concerning his choice of a pedigreed pup," Sykes said, "The man has to rescue a country that's been abused by its previous owner. Let him have a dog."
On the subject of Dick Cheney, Sykes commented, "Oh my god, that's a scary man. Scares me to death. I tell my kids if two cars pull up, and one has a stranger, and the other car has Dick Cheney, you get in the car with the stranger." And she criticized the former VP for "trying to defend torture".
Sykes was at her most vicious on the subject of Rush Limbaugh. "Rush Limbaugh said he hopes this administration fails. That's like saying, 'I hope America fails.' Or that 'I dont care if people are losing their homes, their jobs, our soldiers in Iraq.' He just wants the country to fail. To me, that's treason. He's not saying anything differently than what Osama Bin Laden is saying." Then, turning to the president, Sykes added, "You might want to look into this, sir. Because I think maybe he was the 20th hijacker. But he was just so strung out on Oxycontin that he missed his flight."
Realizing she shocked the crowd with that remark, she said, "Too much? But you're laughing on the inside..."
But she wasn't done. "Rush Limbaugh [says] 'I hope the country fails." I hope his kidneys fail. How about that? He needs some waterboarding, that's what he needs."
On the subject of Sean Hannity, Sykes noted that the Fox News commentator has offered to be waterboarded for charity. "Let Keith Olbermann waterboard him. He can''t take a waterboarding. I can break Sean Hannity just by giving him a middle seat in coach." Now I personally find that last line extremely funny.
But I do think her overall performance was inappropriate for the room, and I say that as a liberal Democrat. Sykes herself was prescient when she began her performance with these remarks: "This is truly an honor to be here. It really is. I keep getting asked the same question, 'Are you nervous? Are you nervous?' With this administration, what is there to be nervous about? If I do a good job, I get great press. If I screw it up royally, Tim Geithner gives me a bonus."

Rush Limbaugh never said he wants the country to fail, he said that he believed if Obama succeeded with his vision of the country it’d destroy us. But as a liberal people often believe what they want to. Facts don’t matter. It doesn’t matter to them that there should never be such a thing as consensus science. The Geneva Convention doesn’t apply to terrorists, but they don’t care…they just make up the fact that it does. And Bush and Cheney did not “hand out candy like torture” but they don’t care. The problem is that there are very few professional journalists left (Nikki being an acceptation). While it use to be that tele-journalists were just that, most are now former “communications” majors or worse – failed actors. The result is a media filled with and run by personalities infatuated with themselves and celebrity. They are equally unwilling and unable to honestly report. As such, overtly partisan “news” (from both sides) is the norm, while objectivity has become all but extinct. Kudos to Nikki for calling it what it was, as I’m sure that by Sunday morning, the vast majority of the media will be fawning over Ms. Sykes’s performance (funny as it was). The monolithic praise will debut on MTP and then quickly migrate across the rest of the talking-head spectrum.

Usually I like balance, too. But the last administration and Limbaugh’s statement of treason embarrassed every diehard, loyal Republican that I know. It isn’t that there isn’t a case to be made for a genuinely conservative perspective on many issues. There is. But it is hard to see the legitimate conservative side in the actions of the last group of people who held power. Political comedy is harsh if it is any good. The object is to push the envelope in order to expose hypocrisy and stupidity. Well, the comments about Rush were aimed at the biggest blowhard of our time, who despite manifest hypocrisy and stupidity is ruling discourse on the right. They were harsh, and partisan, in a business that is harsh and partisan. What’s not to like, unless it’s your harsh partisan who is being exposed? To those expressing offense, the standards were set by our former Vice President. She didn’t shoot anybody, torture anybody, or tell anybody to perform the impossible sexual act. She was well within those bounds, and funny to boot.
I read your post before watching the video. Based on what you said, I was expecting a vicious, over-the-top performance. Sure, it was edgy once or twice, but mostly it was pretty damn tame.

Frankly, Wanda Sykes isn’t my cuppa — I think she single-handedly sucked the life out of The Drew Carey Show and was a non-entity in Evan Almighty (Oh, wait, not a good example . . .) To me, her best performance before this was her guest appearance on Celebrity Poker Showdown in 2004. Because she didn’t have a script and wasn’t playing anyone but herself.
In other words, I think that she was the right person in the right place at the right time doing the right thing to do in the right situation. She so succinctly tore Darth Cheney and Boss Limbaugh to shreds that, frankly, it’s going to be a whole lot of fun to see them and their defenders squirm as they try to defend themselves against her in public over the next several days. Truth to power is neato.

Hearing Wanda Sykes was a wonderful counterpoint to the hours and hours of right wing attacks I hear on the radio every day. You can’t get away from those folks and it’s great to hear some one give it back to them. Of course we now have to suffer with months of self righteous indignation, but it’s worth it for the few minutes of laughter at their expense (so I say now but ask me in a few months : – ).

Can’t agree with your analysis of Sykes’ performance. Sykes got in some jabs at Obama in a good-natured way, consistent with how he conducts himself. Sure, she also went after Palin for hypocrisy on abstinence, but Palin’s frequent hypocrisy opens her up to such ridicule. And yeah, she was harsh on Limbaugh, but his harsh and self-righteous partisanship crosses the line on a daily basis, thereby opening him up to a dose of “do unto others…”. I do think that Obama’s comedic performance upstaged her to some degree, but I don’t believe that Sykes has anything to be ashamed of or to apologize for.

The overall complaint about Sykes should be that instead of going for funny comments about the current president, she was lazy and went back to the same old Bush jokes that were tired the first time around.

The most amazing thing I’ve seen thus far under President Obama has been the total reversal of positions for Dems and Reps – the Dems stifling all opposition under the banner of racism while the Reps have found ‘patriotic dissent.’
As for Wanda’s performance, take it or leave it. I didn’t watch it since I was not a big fan of hers to begin with. There are plenty of comedians who make their living being vitriolic and going after certain types, so let her have at it. The only thing of notice in this episode is that President Obama is being lauded in the media for being post-partisan and trying to be a uniter. Obviously, that is all puff talk and he has no intention of doing any such thing – another lie from the President and another broken campaign promise. I wonder when people will wake up and realize the sick joke that’s been played on this country.
As to the comment that if Obama fails America fails – nothing could be further from the truth. President Obama is seeking a massive increase in federal government at the expense of state’s rights – directly in opposition to the principles that this country was founded on, and that made this country great. Therefore, if Obama succeeds, America will fail.
I will give this caveat – generally, presidents only get a watered-down version of what they want through Congress. While I don’t feel good about the chances of a Dem Congress limiting the Dem President, I do have to allow for the possibility that things won’t be as terrible as they could be.
Thought she was fine. Why should anyone be “polite” when it comes to people who lied to go to war, institutionalized torture and brought the country to the brink of economic collapse through overt cronyism, corruption and greed – regardless of venue. Looking the other way for the sake of decorum allowed the above to go on unchecked for far too long and weakened the checks on our government.
The only way for the government to be accountable to the people is through a strong press and maybe as Stewart, Colbert and Sykes have shown, some brave comedians.

The debate was the last election? My guess is that 95% of the Americans who voted for Obama couldn’t name more than 2 supreme court justices, 5 former presidents, or 3 world leaders (of which, 2 of those three would certainly be Castro and Chavez). There was no debate, only a giant publicity machine designed to turn Obama into a rock star. In fact, it reminded me a lot of watching American idol…though at least American idol is honest in that it lets people vote as many time as they want.

I just have a thought, first off I think Sykes was over the top…it went beyond humor! Now, those of you who think that it was fine to bash Limbaugh and Hannity then I am sure you wouldn’t have minded is she had been bashing Garafalo, Chris Matthews, Keith Olberman and Ed Shultz now would you? I think had the tables been turned you wouldn’t have liked it one bit! But then I think that’s why there is an aisle down the middle!
My problem had nothing to do with Wanda Sykes’ humor, it had to do with the reaction of the majority of the press that bugs me. Why is it that the reporters and journalists of our day and age find it so hard to be objective and fair? I’m not talking about Fox news “fair” but rather present the facts and be mindful of the civic responsibility that comes with being a reporter.
If one want to express their own opinions than they can present themselves as a commentator or pundit rather than presenting themselves as being unbiased observer of what takes place in our world.
So I see less that 10% of the comments hear actually know Limbaugh’s real comment. The rest are content to be intellectually stunted and parrot the false statement he wants the US to fail.
I guess honesty is too tough a concept for Lefties, like patriotism. Limbaugh actually wants the US to succeed…and he feels that can only happen with Obama’s failure. With dissent being the “highest form of patriotism” he should be lauded, not slandered.

I’ve been to a couple of those WHCA dinners. They are among the most despicable rituals in our political culture. Nobody is well-served by them.
This correspondents Dinner exemplified several things: One, that when the word “divisive” is used, Democrats/liberals own it. Second, that today’s humor, for the most part, is no longer just fun: it’s vicious, partisan, and eligible as hate crime; and three, that support for Obama is based primarily on his being black. My guess is that Sykes couldn’t name much that she truly agreed with in Obama’s march toward stripping people, including her, of their rewards for being successful. But the important thing, as even she said, was that he’s black. This new racism is no more palatable than the old form. And it’s a lot more dangerous, as the entire country is being enslaved this time.
Frankly, I thought Wanda Sykes was funny. I found her to be very restrained.

Wanda Sykes had her own show. And like her performance on Saturday Night, it bombed. I have no trouble with her being critical of the previous administration. God knows they deserve it. But is it asking to much for her to at least be funny? Judging by every performance she’s given to date, I guess it is. Now that Ms. Wykes is out as a “rug muncher”, why did she pass on the chance to scold Barry Soetoro for his stance on Gay Marriage?
Let’s give credit where credit is due: speaking truth to out-of-power while currying favor with the current power takes the kind of courage only liberals have. I can’t wait to see Jon Stewart trash the Ford Administration next year!

I take more issue with your critique than I do with Wanda Sykes’s act. I am so incredibly tired of candor being scrutinized in our culture because it is unPC. Wanda Sykes gave a brilliant and honest performance, even if it was markedly bitchy in parts. Her remark about Limbaugh’s well documented oxycontin usage while a bit over the top, did not diminish the show. It is performances like this which help the younger generation identify with and take an interest in the White House, and there is NOTHING inappropriate about that. In fact, it is so timely I think others should carefully obsever and take note!

I was against the Iraq War, but once we committed to it I firmly hoped that it would go as the Bush team predicted, with the majority of American soldiers out of the country by the following summer, a functional democratic and western-friendly government, etc.

That being said, I would love to see a link to an article or a video that says there is some wave of thought saying people are racists for disagreeing with Obama. I’m a hardcore liberal and voted for (and gave to cash to) Obama. Sykes performance was awful. I don’t think it’s all so mean in the grand scheme of things, if she were doing this in her own comedy special: great. But she just misses the fucking point… which is to make fun of the Obama administration and the press. Bush is over. He’s been through eight of these. If you’re not going to make fun of the current events, what’s the point?

I can’t say offhand if Rush has ever joked about wishing death upon somebody, but he’s certainly made jokes about people on the verge of death or who have just died. Most recently he had fun making jokes about Ted Kennedy (granted, another scumbag just like Rush) when he was seemingly on the verge of death. Not that I find either quite that offensive, they are jokes after all… but Rush has said plenty of fucked up things in his day that easily compare to Sykes.

Here’s the problem for Sykes in particular and Hollywood in general.
About half the Country is Republican. Barack HUSSEIN (their, I said it) Obama won 52% of the vote. But a guy no one really had any enthusiasm for in the Republican Party, Bob Dole II aka John McCain, won 48% of the vote.
Sykes just lost every conservative viewer for “New Adventures of Old Christine.” Now, maybe that show is so high in the ratings it can afford to alienate half the potential audience. But then again, maybe not.
Hollywood in general gets hit with the Sykes brush. The Conservative, Republican part of the country, a little less than half now, will likely NOT buy, or watch, or listen to anything featuring prominent Liberal Hollywood types. Ask the Dixie Chicks how well their careers went after they went out of their way to alienate their conservative fans. They’re still around, but making far less money. And that was before the Depression hit.
The easiest thing in the world is to stop watching. Or buying a movie ticket. Or buying a CD, or MP3. Or renting a movie. Because some Liberal Hollywood rich elitist went out of their way to alienate conservative consumers.

If I were a Hollywood producer, I would not hire Wanda Sykes. Because she will automatically and forever alienate about 48% of my potential viewers/audience/consumers.
Neither Conservatives nor Liberals, neither Dems or Reps, care about mild partisan jokes and a few shots at the other party in good fun. Venomous, rabidly partisan attacks by Hollywood Liberals make even those who were inoffensive and mild (like say, Ashton Kutcher) pay the same price by Republican purchasers.
Sykes not only cost herself future paydays and Old Christine lots of viewers, she’s hurt every mildly partisan Democrat with Republican audience members.
This was also a stupid move. Obama won. Vindictive and mean actions by winners create angry and resentful losers just the way abusive Stars create assistants eager to retail every nasty bit of embarrassing behavior, or worse illegal behavior, to the tabloids.

Wanda Sykes is hilarious–to the same people who think that “Evening at the Apollo” is highbrow humor. The WHCD is supposed to be, and always has been, something of a roast. But there’s not one liberal comedian who can make a joke at THIS president’s expense, no matter how many states he thinks there are (57), what languages he makes up (Austrian), or how little he actually knows about anything he’s in charge of (economics, the auto industry, the military.) I think the thing that is most disturbing is that regardless of whether or not a person thought Ms. Sykes was funny or not, the language used here is in general, derogatory, misspelled, grammatically poor, and overwhelmingly vicious.
You may not agree with Ms. Sykes, I may not agree with Mr. Limbaugh, but first and foremost, they have a right to say it because this is America, and there are choices for everyone.
If there was celebrating because one party happens to be back in power after 8 years, perhaps it is due. I remember similar crowing when former Pres. Bush took over after former Pres. Clinton. Quid pro quo.

Secondly, I seem to recall when the Dixie Chicks made their remarks about Bush, half the country was burning their cd’s due to the “unpatriotic” sentiment, members of the press who spoke out were being quieted if not fired. Any and a majority of all anti Bush Administration sentiment was met with an Unpatriotic zeal by their defenders that smeared or tried to denigrate any who called them out. Eight years of an administration that when they leave, the country starts to crumble from their watch, their control and their negligence.

I doubt the country ever returns to another physical civil war, but there is definitely a an ideological one taking place. I don’t believe that denotes a lack of America’s ability to be a pluralistic society though. That’s too black and white. If America was divided by political allegiance it would be divided into another version of a pluralistic society. There is political thought outside of Democrat and Republican norms. There are several political parties; unfortunately the country has trapped itself off into only acknowledging two lines of “thinking” as important.

The problem with all the people who are supporting Sykes’ attacks as “truth to power” (a phrase NUMEROUS posters used – is there a textbook somewhere? talking points that I missed?) is the fact that most of the people she attacked (W, Cheney, Limbaugh, etc.) are NOT in power. They are out of power. It is not brave to attack those who are out. Political humor should be directed first and foremost at those who are in power. And really, whatever your politcal persuasion, “jokes” about wanting people to die of kidney failure because you disagree with their political views are not funny.
Watching Sykes’ sad performance leaves me embarrassed to be an American.

The President’s speech was pretty funny. Seems the president speeches, of both parties, always are. They should be, their staff work on them for months. The professional comics seem to miss more than they hit in that venue.
I don’t care if Ms. Sykes wasn’t fair and balanced. But she should have at least been funny. She wasn’t.

Hey when your President Zero has done nothing, was as much a contributor to the current economic situation as the sitting President was, of course you prefer to stay in the past bashing President Bush because there is nothing positive to promote. Unfortunately based on the lack of economic leadership demonstrated(he’s taken the moves of the GWB and the Fed and squared them), it appears that Zero’s only positive attribute will be that his election has shown the job isn’t only open to white males. Let me explain the “kidney failure” joke to all you folks who think it was inappropriate or some sort of death wish.
1. Rush Limbaugh said he wanted Obama to fail.
2. Wanda thinks that’s offensive to all Americans who want the president to succeed at fixing the economy, winning the wars in Iraq/Afghanistan, solving health care crisis, etc.
3. Wanda’s crack was “I hope his kidneys fail” was a reference both to the “I hope he fails” comment of Limbaugh re: Obama and also to the fact that Limbaugh has been addicted to illegal painkillers.
If the joke had been completely random like: “I hope Limbaugh has a heart attack” that would not only have been stupid and not funny — it would be offensive because it had no comedic foundation and then it would be gratuitous nastiness. Nastiness in response to nastiness with the added ingredient of ridiculing Limbaugh’s own weakness (drug problem) makes the joke successful (funny) and fair.
If you still want to take offense that’s your right. But it does make you a boring old fart.

Generally, the spirit of the comedy performance is to poke fun at all sides. It’s supposed to be a nonpartisan event. But Sykes didn’t do that. She nastily ripped into only one side. While not as offensive as Imus’ wholly inappropriate performance in front of the Clintons in 1998, it just wasn’t very good. I’m not sure if Wanda’s just an angry liberal or just isn’t very talented. I can certainly take a joke, but she just wasn’t very funny. Honestly, there are 3rd-rate comics playing Holiday Inns funnier than that.

I too find it interesting and mildly amusing that now the shoe is on the other foot, just how horribly the liberals/Dems are handling their “victory”. This from the group who brought us ‘everybody wins’ Little League games, believing in looks rather than substance and wanting hope and change.

Bush was not a true conservative, you only have to look at his spending record to prove it. More money in people’s pockets means a healthier and stronger economy. If he continues, American will be in a very precarious spot. If we’re not their already. If you think we aren’t being watched from the outside by people who want to take us down, you are crazy. KUDOS for coming down on the correct (right) side, Nikki. maybe you can keep the rest of the liberals in line because incidents like this and many others are really becoming intolerable to even some Democrats, let alone Independents (and we all know how the republicans feel to be constantly blamed for everything). And tell Obama and the Obama media that he OWNS this now, and he RAN for the presidency. what’s he complaining about? If there was a problem left by Bush (there was plenty), then he could’ve fixed it, but instead he made it worse. THAT PART IS ALL OBAMA. Too bad HE IS A FAILURE at making the world love us and getting concessions from european leaders that fawned on him or getting the dictators to follow his messianic bidding. He has an opportunity to succeed with improving the economy, but alas, i see it all getting worse, and the money will go to corrupt people, if his selection of unethical staffers is any indication of the types of FRIENDS he likes to keep close.

Limbaugh clearly, and I have heard it many times from the live recording, not through Liberal Hack interpretations, stated that if Obama wishes to turn this country against capitalism, wants a socialist government, and wants to continue spending at an unprecedented rate never before seen in our country’s history, that he hopes he fails to implement those policies. And the reason he clearly stated was he wanted the country to succeed. What is so disgusting about the liberal hypocrite is their selective deafness, and their ability to continue to lie about what is irrefutable fact. All you have to do is listen to the actual CPAC tapes, and the podcasts of the Limbaugh show to see the lies. Who cares what Sykes says about anything. It was just another distortion from the supporters of lies, intolerance, hypocrisy, and media invention. Otherwise known as “the Extreme Left of the Democratic Party” of which Sykes is an obvious card carrying member. I somehow doubt Sykes cared much when movies, artwork, and printed publications all called for and celebrated the hypothetical murder of George W. Bush. I don’t think that a radio talk show host hoping that the most extreme, socialist administration in the history of this country would fail to achieve their goals of total government take over of the wealth of this nation is on par with those that wished for our previous President’s death.
But Sykes, Garafalo, Olbermann, Matthews, Baldwin, Penn, and the rest of the single digit IQ crowd I am sure sees it as a direct analogy. Except they don’t know what that means.

Nikki, I have not blogged before but I had to after I read your article on Wanda. One thing I dislike about liberals is their hypocricy you included. All the years that Rush Limbaugh has spent demonizing blacks and all minorities casting us in the role of useless welfare dependent gangsters, all I hear is “Oh how awful that Rush is.” I don’t believe a lot of people know how soul destroying to minorities are to minorities his cultish rantings have been. There are a whole bunch of ignorant, poorly educated whites that get all their information from Rush regarding black people. And now people are shocked that a comediene had an oppurtunity to put him in his place and we now have to deal with your delicate sensibilities. All this for a guy that abuses poor and sick people with his vitriol on a daily basis. Please, don’t make me laugh you people. Wanda lowered the tone of the discourse? In years past, the Correspondents’ dinner included the commentators/hosts poking fun at the sitting president. This year it was more like an attack against anyone who has opinions that don’t mirror theirs. It’s the same as the Miss California debacle. Why are we even spending time as a nation fixating on this when we have such tremendous obstacles to tackle, like the ‘economy’? Rome is burning, people. Wake up.
The truth may hurt… but in the end it is the truth that will out. Comedy is even funnier when it exposes the truth.
Our nation has lost the ability to be civil toward one another. Everything must be taken to the extreme, no room can be left for disagreement, no one can be respected for having a different view, everyone must be uniform in thought or opinion or they are evil and stupid. The polarized left and right can’t wait to up the rhetoric to get a reaction out of the other side.
No wonder our country is falling apart. The only thing we can agree upon is to destroy the other side at all cost.

If making a hilarious joke about something a person REALLY DID is considered “going after” them, then so be it. Reminding the country about the hateful hypocrisy of druggie Limbaugh, the arrogant recklessness of the W, or the murderous nature of Cheney (people, he SHOT HIS FRIEND!) is simply a tiny pinch of the justice that was never served. You seem to live in a fact-free universe and are ignoring all the promises Obama has kept (closing Gitmo, negotiating with Iran, meeting with Republicans to discuss health care reform, a plan to pull out of Iraq, open press conferences, to name a few). Just because you lost the election, doesn’t mean that the guy who won is doing a bad job.
Sykes went way overboard and said many things that were in bad taste, however true she might believe them to be. I found most of her comments to uncomfortable rather than funny.
