I've just been told that new showrunner Daniel Cerone is out, and ABC's Dirty Sexy Money will be shutting down again for retooling with a possible restart at the end of July under the new "new" showrunner Jon Harmon Feldman. I find the series unwatchable so I don't give a damn who's in charge. Waste of Peter Krause, though.

I’ll take over the show.
First order of business: Find out why the show is still on the air, because I don’t know anyone who watched it.
Second order of business: Keep it on the air long enough for my paychecks to clear.
Third order of business: Try to make the show interesting and entertaining so it will get renewed, because by then I will have become used to the swanky Executive Producer lifestyle of high pay, model/actress girlfriends that are out of my league, and all the assistants I can hurl abuse at.
I’m so glad you also think this series stinks, Nikki. Great cast and lots of talent behind the scenes, but what was on screen was a boring and cliched mess. I gave it a month before I finally ditched it.
Wow. I thought the show was good with moments of real excellence. The scenes between Sutherland and Krause were a blast and the evolution of the character Brian was great.
They gave this lousy show to the guy who created (and then ran) “Big Shots” into the ground? He wasted a great cast with that one- why give him another cast to waste?
I did love the show.
“Retooling” means the show will be cancelled by November sweeps. See what happened to “Women’s Murder Club”….
The Ratings drop during the first Season was not even that big to warrant a direction change. ABC!!
I really like DSM.
dirty sexy money is on the move to NY, give it another month or so!
This show has survived because the men who make decisions at ABC are just into making green light decisions based on the sexual “edge” of the show. And I say “men” because this show is obviously catering to that audience and would only be green lighted by people who saw men’s most simplistic point of view. There’s no other reason. The show is NOT interesting. There’s lots of bad acting. The scenes seem pieced together. ABC needs to go back to quality shows that capture middle America’s interest for the long haul.
I watched the show every week – some scenes were far better than others. Interesting premise from the start – looking to get more moral quandries though – I don’t want a soap. I want to watch the lead character walk into complicated dilemmas and make some good and bad choices, and have to suffer the consequences of the latter.
Anonymous, there’s another guy, “mheister” who does the same thing with weird tirades
DSM is a soap opera. Hardly a “man’s show.” If anything it caters to women.
And the guy who plays Brian has to be one of the worst and most over the top actors I’ve ever seen. He’s also about as believable as a heterosexual as JM J. Bullock was.
If I remember correctly, Grey’s Anatomy was shut down briefly for “retooling” by ABC before season one even aired. That seemed to work ok.
why is nikki finke such a miserable !%&!!@!. dsm is retooling only because abc realizes what a nugget of gold it has. great concept, great creator, great cast, great performances, great critical response, incredible buzz, and 10 million viewers!!!
they don’t want to blow a good thing because the understand that they are only a few hurdles from having this wonderful, absurd romp on the air for the next five years.
This is worst news than a cancellation. With the likes of Jon Harmon Feldman at the helm, I’m simply not watching it anymore. I wonder why the hell execs insist on hiring the talentless hack responsible for epic failures such as Tru Calling, Reunion and, most aggravating of all, Big Shots.
I must say I enjoyed what I thought was a good (not great) first season of DSM. But now I’m done.
Anonymous–
I guess I must be lucky with the timing, and unlike some folks, who shall remain anonymous, I try to do something different than just snipe at people with that now ossified catch all insult of “get a life.”
And for someone who appears to have the time to count the comments of others and snipe at them, you don’t appear to have much of a “life.”
Now if you don’t mind, ABC/Disney is on the phone and we’re negotiating my salary to take over the show.
I love the show, too, but I’m biased because my brother works on it. The July hiatus was scheduled. They went to work early to get some eps in the can and then were taking some time off before hitting it hard again. Can’t get into the show runner troubles, but one has nothing to do with the other. I think this show is a really fun romp. Not meant to be taken seriously. And, yes, it’s more appealing to women. Blahblahblah is right about Greys. Not to mention Brothers & Sisters. Lots of changes there, too. ABC knows how to make this kind of show. It will be fine.
Why are all my favorite shows doomed for cancellation? ABC, don’t pull a FOX.
Giving Jon Harmon Feldman this show is a sure kiss of death. The man takes talented casts and somehow always screws them royally. Eliza Dushku, Michael Vartan, Dylan McDermott, Dave Annable, and Nia Long have just been a few of his victims. The guy is a hack plain and simple. Krause, Sutherland and Clayburgh deserve so much better. I give this show six more episodes tops.
Does Feldman have pics of Steve Mcpherson with a sheep? This guy should be driven out of the business not rewarded.
As for the actor who plays Brian, I assumed he was going to be shortly coming out of the closet as a plot point until they expected us to believe he had slept with two different women in his life. At that point, the show moved into the realm of science fiction.
@Anon2
I think mhiester is a sag insider
Has anyone noticed that this is the second recent show Cerone has been tossed off of? In addition, the HWP “article” made sure it mentioned how much he was still loved over there, etc. Nice guy to those he likes, to those he doesn’t…watch out. I guess you can say that about virtually anyone so there yah go. And Feldman, oye. I’ll just leave it at that.
One of the best shows last season. Many shows came back for June and planned a July hiatus. So it’s really not that big a deal. It can only get better.
Furious D, get a J O B!!!!! Always posting comments. Refresh, refresh, refresh. POST COMMENT. Refresh, refresh, refresh. The only thing you’re negotiating Furious D is your Verizon bill, to get more minutes……and unlimited web access.
People on this website sure do love to be bitter and mean. Why? The reason Feldman gets so many gigs is that he’s talented. Plenty of writers are considered hacks before they hit it big–Marc Cherry and Linwood Boomer to name two.
Who knows? Maybe he’ll mess up DIRTY SEXY MONEY and maybe it will be his fault. Or maybe not. Sometimes a show is such a mess that nobody can fix it. Other times, as somebody else mentioned, re-tooling can work as it did on Grey’s Anatomy.
I love DSM – and know others who have enjoyed it too. The character of Brian is hilarious. I think you are taking it way to serious – it’s fun. Hopefully the ‘retooling’ will make it better and not try and turn it into a bland soap opera.
How bout you dipshits at ABC cancel that piece of shit.
Quick Note: Regarding the “oafish” remarks, they were directed at actor Glenn Fitzgerald, who plays Brian. I misread them as an attack on Krause.
I still think trying to “out” an actor in the comments section is oafish…
It’s a shame we constantly get served up crap like “DSM” when we had a show like last season’s “Journeyman” over at NBC….
>>>10 million viewers!!!
In the 1960s, that would have qualified it as an official ratings BOMB. (And that’s “bomb” as in “disaster,” not as in “Da Bomb.”)
They should just repeat a series from the 1960s. It’d get better ratings!
Not a hater,
No one is denying Feldman isn’t talented. He is actually a VERY talented writer. I have NO IDEA what happened on BIG SHOTS. That show was a major piece of **** and ABCS knew it but couldn’t fix it. Feldman MAY be able to fix Dirty/Sexy. Feldman.. personality wise, again, – oye.
A few points to make:
One – anyone complaining that they have to work lots of late nights, gimme a break. Are you a Story Editor that’s complaining? Wait, there are no more Story Editors, just former Co-EPs who take Story Editor money with a Consultant credit so no one knows how little they are making.
My point? Thank God you have a job. And if you have a job on The Simpsons – thank him twice. The only people that would dare complain have won the lottery and lost touch with what it’s like to be a real working writer.
Two – Before you Jon Feldman bash (and I have never met the guy) maybe you should ask around and get some insight on what really took his last show down. It’s a known fact to those on the inside he had a high level writer who was out of control but he could do nothing about because wait for it… they were both repped at the same agency. By the time the person was banned from the room, they had lost weeks on that show.
While I love reading the comments here, it’s kind of a shame that anyone can just bash a showrunner – “They made me work hard!”, “How did they ever get another show on the air!” – without much merit.
Ask Around- what comments were you reading about working hard and complaining about having a job? And did the high-level writer have the initials RT?
The majority of writers in the guild are just not that good, and most have made a vocational error. When they speak of late nights — Stop whining you panty-waists. Some people actually work for a living. You get to play make believe and get paid a lot of money. Not only that – they feed you and treat you like geniuses which the vast majority of you are not. You know what got me disliking writers? Meeting them on the strike lines. I couldn’t believe theei ridiculous whimpyness and entitled attitudes.
Being a showrunner is not an easy job. It comes with responsibilities that most of you hacks will never understand. So… until you walk a mile in these guys’ shoes – shut up.
@ Huh?
Those comments about late nights should have been posted in the “Sit Down, Shut Up” thread. Sorry for the confusion. And no… not RT.
You work long hours on a new show because you’re still finding your voice. Bill and Josh ran The Simpsons season 7 & 8. There was no reason for every night to be a late night.
I don’t watch this show. The title is trying too hard.
I really like the show. And more importantly I’m pulling for ANY scripted programming on any network. Bottom line: this show employs a lot of people at a time when reality abounds.
Peggy Lane O’Rourke
Uh, Daniel Cerone “tossed off” Dexter? I work on Dexter. Cerone was the creative voice on that series for two record-breaking seasons. He left Dexter because ABC offered him a multiyear deal to create new shows, not run broken-down ones like DSM. (And Dexter is suffering in his absence, trust me. The leftover execs here are still pissed at him for bailing.) The real question is why ABC assigned the head writer of a stellar cable series like Dexter to run a silly show like DSM in the first place.
Anonymous, that guy’s no SAG insider, just a troll
I’m willing to admit that I’m shallow enough to just want to watch Donald Sutherland and Peter Krause on a loop. But the rest of the show fell into the usual sexy contrivances. I hope they can do something with this show. It wouldn’t be such a bad idea to move production to New York. I’m just saying that because I live in New York and wouldn’t mind working on production.
I don’t usually read blogs, but since I had posted to this one earlier I came back for another visit and read through the whole bunch.
I’m a bit surprised by the level of vitriol in these postings. I’m sure part of it is due to the level of actors on the show and a very high expectation from all parties concerned on what the final product COULD be. However, does it do any good to bash it in such a caustic fashion? Whatever you’re opinion on the show, these people are all trying their best in a “network” machine. A machine, as anyone who works in it can attest, that has become more and more difficult to navigate over the last two decades.
Cut people a little slack and assume they are trying their best to produce something of merit, against all odds.
And now, I’ve become a part of this ridiculous little side culture of Nikke’s and feel a bit silly for having posted in the first place.
Shame on me for not having anything better to do, and goodbye.
Actually, I find mheister to be a voice of reason around here and he has a blog to prove it. You don’t need to be a hollywood insider to voice your own opinion.
I don’t think “Dirty Sexy Money” is bad, but it’s not a gem yet either. It has a brilliant cast and some very good scenes and twists, but yet it’s unfortunately still not outstanding. It wants to be this provocative groundbreaking show with tiny bits of depth, but hasn’t really hit the ground yet. They have to make it juicier and more compelling to watch, add more humor, more darkness, more social criticism. The basic concept is neat, the cast is neat, the writing is okay. Somehow I feel like this show would have kicked some asses, if it had aired on cable. Network restrictions certainly harm the show in a way. It’s not as good as it could be, but it’s not bad. It’s smart, but not smart enough and there are too many characters all over the place. I won’t give up on it just yet, though I’m disappointed that Cerone left and will be replaced with Feldman. I didn’t like Feldman’s previous work to be honest, but series creator Craig Wright does still work on the show, so maybe he won’t be able to run it to the ground so fast.
Ask Around – wrong thread or not, thank you for the reminder that to actually net a writing gig these days is a privilege.
