EXCLUSIVE: Twilight sequel director Chris Weitz is pandering yet again to fans. There had been considerable concern whether Taylor Lautner could physically do New Moon in which his character Jacob Black transforms into a 7-foot werewolf monster type. But Weitz is keeping him in the role to appease fans who consistently put Lautner in the top echelon of the IMDB STARmeter. Weitz today confirmed that Taylor will be reprising Jacob "with the enthusiastic support of Summit Entertainment, the producers, and Stephenie Meyer. The characters in Stephenie's books go through extraordinary changes of circumstance and also appearance; so it is not surprising that there has been speculation about whether the same actor would portray a character who changes in so many surprising ways throughout the series. But it was my first instinct that Taylor was, is, and should be Jacob, and that the books would be best served by the actor who is emotionally right for the part. I think that fans of Twilight the book and the movie will be surprised by the Jacob Black that Taylor will bring to the screen in New Moon; and I'm looking forward to working with him and the rest of the cast in realizing the film." Meyer added, "I was very much a part of this decision. My first priority was always what was best for New Moon — what was going to give us the best possible movie. I’m truly thrilled that Taylor was the one who proved to the director, to Summit, and to me that he is the best possible Jacob we could have. And I’m very much looking forward to what he’s going to bring to Jacob’s character this year."
Taylor Lautner Locked In For 'New Moon'

well, thank god, they didn’t choose Zac Efron.
AWESOME!!! He is perfect for the part!
YESSSS!!!!! Taylor is the perfect Jacob!
SMART THINKING SUMMIT!! =] <3
I still think the role is a big stretch for a baby faced kid like Lautner . He does not look the part as described in the book. In the next book he’s suppose to look like a big brawny 25 yr old. this is going to be a big stretch!
Good thing they are going to use animation. he must have really wanted this role. Its going to be funny if they can’t make it right.
Man am I old. Never heard of that kid and his look bothers the crap out of me. Good thing I’m not the demo.
My lawn. Off it.
My 11 yr old niece is very happy…… This kid is all over the teen magazines – more so than Robert Pattinson. Hopefully he takes some acting lessons : )
Given what they did with Benjamin Button, they can do anything with bodies and faces. They can make it happen, but the question is: will they spend the money to do it right?
Glad they went with an actor over a pretty face. Taylor has gained 19lbs of muscle. And is said to gaid more muscle mass when they start filming soon.
Anything will be better then watching Bella’s “eye acting”
And this is big news because…
Why is this “pandering”? We’re not talking about Lawrence of Arabia, we’re talking about a popcorn money sponge directed at 13 year old girls (and their mothers). The movie was successful because it has a massive fanbase, not because it’s “good”. If the fanbase wants to see a certain actor, who was already in the first movie, they’re supposed to change out the actor? Now if they had cast Zac Efron because he’s popular, and screw the fact that the boxed set will look stupid because you have a completely different looking actor playing the same character in pt. 2, that would be pandering. This is exactly what producers are supposed to do in situations like these – provide character consistency. Sequels almost always suck, and one of the reasons they always suck is people start getting cute in situations like these – “Well #1 was a big hit, imagine if we’d had the Jonas Brothers in it. Then it would have been a HUGE hit!!1!11!!”. Endless examples should prove it doesn’t work this way.
I remember when Taylor first came into ICM to meet (Jessica Pilch was repping him at the time). The kid was all over the place, doing handstands and karate kicks in the office and what not…tool.
“Glad they went with an actor over a pretty face.” This is a pretty funny line, except I think you actually meant it in earnest.
Why is it so hard for some people to imagine an actor playing someone physically different to themselves? Actors have transformed themselves for roles for decades. That’s kind of what being an actor entails. Slipping into different characters. So this guy has to wear lifts and whatever to look taller? Big fucking deal. I suppose we should be grateful the studio didn’t demand that Brad Pitt play the role. After all, Brad Pitt seems to be the only actor any producer wants to cast no matter how laughably miscast he’d be. I’m sick to death of hearing his name come up in meetings.
Nikki:
What’s happened to your usually impeccable b.s. detector? What does “concern whether Taylor Lautner could physically do New Moon”? Does he have ADHD and brittle bones; or do some folks out there need to be told that Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchet looked really old in ‘Benjamin Button’ because of prosthetic makeup and digital effects?
Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattison are the New Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Glad that the original casting director knew this and even happier that Weitz figured it out and kept Taylor. As long as they shoot him the way they shot Rob in Twilight, fans will be happy!
I for one am sick of sequels including different actors playing the roles. It can’t be helped if the original actor drops dead or gets his panties in a twist. But switching actors because the director suddenly decides the actor can’t act AFTER the movie made a fortune is ridiculous. For example, Jon Favreau is replacing two or three actors in the Iron Man sequel because he couldn’t be bothered to fire them in time to replace them in the first movie. And then we’re expected to believe that Christian Bale and Aaron Eckhart would actually fight over that troll Maggie Gyllenhaal in The Dark Knight? LMFAO! I don’t think so. I call this the David E Kelly Syndrome – switching actors for no good reason other than perhaps having unmedicated attention deficit disorder.
“Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattison are the New Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt.”
Yeah, right. Nobody is going to remember them in ten years. Well, maybe Robert Pattinson will still have a career, but that other kid? No fucking way.
BTW, Jacob Black is a fucking pedophile, child molester, cradle robber, you name it. Keep your baby daughters away from him. He might start touching them in inappropriate ways.
i think he’s pretty…shake a can of coins and distract me.
Christ! “to appease fans who consistently put Lautner in the top echelon of the IMDB STARmeter”
that’s just plain stupid, sorry.
Look at what happened to PRISON BREAK. You can’t pay attention to *the fraction* of the Twilight fanbase who hang out on the internet and Twilight 24/7 and base decisions on *what they think they want even though they are the group most responsive to being told what they want.* Can’t you tell from how much they love Pattinson now? All you have to do is teach them what they want and after a short time of resistance (controversy, a good thing), it all dies down and a new love-fest takes place. Please.
That’s just another good example of “too much info”.
I assumed Summit was going to produce a better film next time around.
If Lautner was replaced (as he should), what would happen? People boycott New Moon? Yeah, right.
kay, well first of all I have NOTHING against Taylor Lautner. I think it was pretty crappy the way the new director came in and just told Lautner that he may or may not get the part in New Moon. I thought he was one of the better actors. Catherine (the first director) told him that he would have the same part before she bailed on the movie. I think it is going to be better for this movie to have a different director, because Twilight wasnt the best, they could have made it 10x better in my opinion. But I’m glad that Taylor got the part:)
taylor launter is so hot
i love u in all ur pictures ex. in jacob black &sharkboy &lava girl
I think Taylor Launter is pretty cute and he is like one of the million people who have the same name as me except for the 8 in my grade. But watever im all open to sharing ,but only because i have no choice, LOL O well!!!!!!!!!!
He is wrong for the role. Too small in stature and he does not look Native American in the least. I think the film makers blew it giving into fan pressure. Edward is barely in the New Moon book, so the movie hangs more on the werewolf story (unless they drastically change things). Taylor L. is not a very good actor and I’ve never met a Native American with a pug nose. There are many talented, handsome and tall Native American actors who deserve a shot at the part. I’m really, really disappointed that a production that could get Bella and Edward so right can get this one sooo wrong…
Hey taylor i waould like to meet you.I love you how you are right now not in twilight ok . I love you
i THINK HE IS RIGHT TO BE JACOB ON TWILIGHT
