Shame on the trades and mainstream media for not making the big deal out of this angle of the Sunday box office story I did. (Or, is that the reason? See my previous, Rival Studios Accuse WB Of Inflating #s). It's now clear that Warner Bros wildly exaggerated its domestic gross claims for its disastrous Speed Racer. The WB-inflated tally of $20.2M put its anime actioner 2nd and Fox's What Happens In Vegas only 3rd with $20M, when every other studio had the ranking the other way around and Speed Racer's tally around $19.7M. Those rival studio execs told me Sunday there was no way WB's kiddie pic would suddenly have a huge Sunday. And, remember, there's primo PR value in these Top 10 ranking which get reported in newspapers and on TV and the Internet. But now the official figures have been reported Monday, and everyone can see how fudged WB's figures really are. Speed Racer made only $18.5M for the weekend, while Fox's Vegas totalled $20.1M. That's a difference of more than $1.6M. Jeez. As I noted yesterday, these kind of controversies don't develop often in Hollywood, but when they do, they can be ugly. That's because there is a certain code of honor among thieves, if you will -- a tacit agreement that every Hollywood studio will try to report weekend box office numbers as accurately as possible. Now it's shame on WB.
TOLDJA! 'Speed Racer' Finishes Only 3rd; Facts Show Warner Bros Inflated Figures

5 more words fore Bewkes and Horn.
HA HA HA HA HA!!!!! (or how bout 18 million HA’s to match the gross)
Seriously, that’s 3 million off from what they reported. There should be some sort of penalty when it’s that blatant of a difference. Don’t you all think?
And yes, there are some of us who take glee is watching WB fail. It’s called Karma! Get used to it!
An auspicious start for Jeff Robinov in his newly created position of ‘King of All Movie Stuff’ at Warner. I wonder if this means he won’t be making any movies starring men now (or maybe the monkey will get the blame). Good job baldy.
Can you say “worse dog that THE GOLDEN COMPASS”? Can you, Jeff Bewkes? Yes sir, you can.
I’m thinking it’s a $5 million gross on Sunday if Warner Bros. was lucky. I’m pegging this stinker at no more than $18 million with the actual amount closer to $16 million.
The $6.6 million Sunday estimate may have been more than 50% overstated. That type of overestimate is not unintentional error.
A quarter of a BILLION dollars – gone.
Feigned surprise can now turn towards “The Incredible Hulk’s” first weekend results on June 15.
The only guessing game left for “Speed Racer” is the second weekend drop. 70% may be charitable.
This movie stars men? Seems like a kids movie to me. Starring a low level teen hearthrob. Clearly WB should focus on men again.
Crap estimating like that just to look ‘good’ in the media makes me even more glad it’s a flop. WB’s not getting my money for sure now!
WHEN WILL BIASED HOLLYWOOD STOP TRYING TO SHOVE THEIR LIBERAL SPEED RACER MOVIES DOWN OUR THROATS?!! Just kidding. “Iron Man” is a fun, well written movie and “Speed Racer” wasn’t.
And that “five words for Bewkes/Horn/Robinov” meme is funny.
“A quarter of a BILLION dollars – gone.”
That money isn’t “gone.” It was transferred from the accounts of WB to the accounts of people who provided services on the movie.
Hey ckn8 (if that is your real name), the ‘men’ thing is a joke since Jeffy Robinov so famously told Nikki that he wasn’t going to make any more films with women after Jodi Foster’s last disaster. He’s a tool and if it weren’t for DC Comics based movies and films that start with “Harry Potter” it would be impossible to see how he could keep his job at all.
Knowingly falsifying public information is an SEC violation. That was a big mistake.
Good thing Alan Horn has shut down those unprofitable divisions like the one that bought March of the Penguins and the one that made the Lord of the Rings Movies. Now they can focus on more trash like Speed Racer. If you bought $10,000 of TWX a month after Alan Horn took over as COO, your stock would be worth a cool $1,890.58 today. That is called Leadership.
