EXCLUSIVE: The question is whether this is a really smart or really stupid decision by The CW's boss Dawn Ostroff. I'm told a contract controversy is preventing Tori Spelling from joining that so-called "edgy, contemporary spin-off" of the '90s hit 90210 on the network this fall as planned.
Insiders tell me that Tori was hired to reprise her role as fashion boutique owner Donna Martin for just "$10,000-$20,000" per episode. But then Jennie Garth and Shannen Doherty were signed for "$35,000-$50,000" a show. When Tori found out her former co-stars were getting paid way more than she was, she got pissed and demanded equal pay. But the network suits have refused. So now my sources tell me that Tori has pulled out of the series, which premieres with a 2-hour special on September 2nd. "She thought she deserved parity, and she's got a point," an insider explained to me. (UPDATE: The CW has confirmed today that it has no deal with Tori, despite mentioning Donna Martin's name in its initial press release.)
That's because, for some bizarre reason, Tori is a reality show ratings hit by Oxygen's low standards. (Last Tuesday's Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood was the most watched telecast in the history of that execrable women's cable channel as 1.4 million viewers saw the episode where Tori gave birth to her 2nd child.) And Spelling wrote a bestselling book besides. Showing once again that it doesn't pay to underestimate the terrible taste of the American public...
As for Tori, she has told the media only that the timing didn't work out for her to appear in the 90210 pilot because she was giving birth. "So we'll see what happens later in the season," she said last week on CBS' The Early Show. One insider tells me it wouldn't be surprising if Tori and the show eventually agree to bring her onto 90210 as a November sweeps stunt. Hmm.
You may remember that, back on May 29th, I wrote that the talk of Hollywood was when, not if, The CW's Dawn Ostroff would be fired. After all, she got her job by the skin of her teeth after programming as badly as she could at the old UPN and brown-nosing Les Moonves who was making a power-play move on Warner Bros' Barry Meyer. Well, I recently learned that Ostroff managed to buy herself more time on the back of 90210. Insiders tell me that her future, and the entire future of the fledgling network, rests on the teen show's fall ratings. As a source explained, "Since Gossip Girl opened with a 3.1 for women 18-to-34 and still can't get ratings, then 90210 has got to open with a '4' in front of it for women 18-to-34 if The CW and Dawn are going to survive into 2009."

Personally, I think that she should be forced to pay $20,000 per episode to be allowed on tv. Directly to me.
I thought Tori owned 90210. Didn’t her Dad give her the show in the 90’s? Her and her brother?
After BIONIC WOMAN last season, which one will win the award of the most unnecessary remake of a tv show: 90210 or THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO?
How is this show gonna be “edgy” or cool if they bring back the whole damn cast of the original show? MOVE ON.
I think that the initial hiring of Tori was the stupidest and most obtuse creative move ever. No one in the intended audience for this show could care less about Tori Spelling. NO ONE.
For that matter, they will barely give a shit about the other old cast members. There will be a ratings blip as former viewers watched the first episode or two to see the old cast members. And then the show will be on its own.
I really hope that The CW doesn’t go the way of flesh as shows like Supernatural (which I enjoy) would presumably disappear as well. Also a fifth network gives people somewhere else to sell their stuff and considering how flat the market is that’s a life line for some.
Though to be honest, at this point it really does seem like The CW’s demise is a certainty. When the very future of a network is hinging on a remake of a Aaron Spelling show ’starring’ Shannen Doherty exit visas are imminent.
In saying that…I don’t wish to reduce Ms Ostroff to a a superficial image but…..
…she really is a good looking woman. The best looking network head ever? Unfortunately Moonves’ lantern jaw keeps her from taking that crown that she’s a looker none the less.
It’s stupid things like this is why it’s so hard to business in Hollywood. The folks running it would rather complicate things with silly games like this than just do the job.
They should know that trying to squeeze one, especially an entertainment press magnet like Tori Spelling, for less money would just create bad buzz for the show. But they did it anyway. If they wanted to pay her less without the fuss, offer her the same money per episode, but write her into fewer episodes, and say they’re giving her more time for her other professional/family commitments.
It’s called strategy.
I think that the initial hiring of Tori was the stupidest and most obtuse creative move ever. No one in the intended audience for this show could care less about Tori Spelling. NO ONE.
Tori’s done a pretty good job managing her image since 90210. By doing indie films like House of Yes and Trick (in between all those Lifetime woman in peril movies), followed by the self-mockery of her VH1 sitcom, she’s managed to grab some respect from the gen-xers who always hated her as part of the 90210 behemoth. She may not have moved on to bigger and better things, but she’s actually managed to keep the 90210 die-hards and earn some fans from the least likely corners.
If the CW is hoping that names like Rob Thomas and Jessica Walter are going to get a few extra eyeballs to check out 90210, despite hating the franchise when they were in high school, Tori would help that.
When’s the Gilmore Girls revival?
Excellent Furious D. Unfortunately you are assuming that someone in Hollywood would have the ’smarts’ to ’strategize’ anything.
I won’t watch it without Tori on it.
This is very strange. First CW wants Tori, and then they offer her $10,000-$20,000 an episode, which is what you offer someone with basically no experience on a TV show. For example, comedian Artie Lange got $35,000 an episode for the Norm MacDonald show with maybe 10 lines a show, oftentimes less!
The only way Tori would consider this is if they promised that all she’d have to work is, say, a morning one day a week and she could do other work or hang out with her family the rest of the week.
Otherwise, it looks like they’re trying to get her to turn them down so they could say we tried to get her, and make it look like she was the villain.
Say what you want about Tori, but she is a celebrity, she has name value, she apparently has an audience of teenaged girls with her reality show, and this seems like a slap in the face.
If you’re going to talk about never underestimating the intelligence of the American people, rip on a harmful entity like Apatow and co. Tori Spelling seems generally harmless [except for her support of Joe Francis.]
They should not remake tv shows or films unless they’ve got such a good take that it’ll be better or equally good. It seemed more than likely they’d miss the boat on what made that show good, and judging from the promos the boat was missed.
Even the original version only got the show right for the first 3 seasons – then they went very wrong for reasons too detailed for this board.
actually I dont think it is fair to bring back two other castmates and pay them more than Tori. they should all be paid the same. I happen to be one of those viewers who watch tori and dean and I think they a cute family. she does not appear to be a snob. or expect millions of dollars for her baby pictures like some others that are low on talent high on looks.
hearing the same thing, if 90210 doesn’t do well… buh bye dawn. they may actually save money with her not there… those personal “expenses” and on company time seem to be adding up.
I don’t get the bile for Tori.
Like people tuning in to watch Doherty, Garth, the new 90210, or even the old one are displaying anything but terrible taste?
Sure, Spelling is nothing special. But Doherty and Garth are even bigger nobodies at this point. And guest appearances from the original cast may be the only thing that get people to tune in.
It totally seems like they dropped the ball, they should probably pony up to get as many of the original cast members to show up as possible.
I think that bring back the “oldies” is really a stupid idea, anyway. I mean, they could bring some back to make guest appearances every few episodes, if they want to make it FEEL like the original. But, if they’re going to to hire three of the originals back, then, they really should make the pay equal. It’s not fair to do otherwise. Particularly when everyone knows that Tori’s dad invented the show in the first place and everyone hated Shannen Doherty (myself included)…Tori would be the LAST one I’d shaft!
Who knows this show could get cancelled after its first season. But anyway if I wanted to do 90210 I would do a movie version instead of making a brand new series. And I bet the fans of the old show are perturbed with CW over this one. I don’t blame Tori for being upset at all.
Honestly I would prefer a movie version of 90210 with the original cast. A movie version with Melrose Place too.
Forget Tori Spelling the person for a second and remember her character Donna Martin was the heart and soul of the original series. Considering the fact that this show could make or break that dying network this season arguing over 20k per episode is just stupid. The bottom line is she’s worth it, and if I ran that network Id pay it in a heart beat. I must admit I was a fan of the original series and like the idea of bringing back original cast members. Personally I don’t like the new cast of kids from what I see. Im interested what becomes of this program creatively as I’ll certainly watch it in the beginning to see if its half as good as the 90’s version.
It’s amazing to me that Ms. Ostroff is still employed. After the lackluster job she did at the UPN, it boggles my mind that Ms. Ostroff was put in charge of the CW programming.Honestly….”The Farmer Needs a Wife”? “Pussycat Dolls”? At least the WB had had quality original programming: even their “teen” soaps had personality. The only show I watch on the CW is “Supernatural”, which ironically is a remmant of the WB. But even though that show pulls in good ratings for the CW standards, it’s considered a bubble show every year because Ms Ostroff says “she doesn’t get it.” Guess it doesn’t matter if a show is quality or popular or well written if she doesn’t get it. Since the only shows Ms. Ostroff does seem to get are about bratty rich, spoiled kids sleeping around, I share the concern that the CW is soon doomed to be a footnote in media history.
If Tori’s last name wasn’t Spelling, she’d still be
hopping tables, still waiting for her very first
“callback.”
Tori gave birth in June this is August…She gave birth 2 months ago not 5!!! Fact check please.
Not to worry Tori – the show is going to be a big flop anyway – I guarantee.
I wonder if the “fuss” isn’t the goal. Now this old idea will get tons of Tori press, and GASP, her father created the show! The “controversy” creates a great story. Is it all designed to make you forget the show is a turd? (No publicity is bad publicity–that sort of thing.)
Having said that, maybe we shouldn’t give the CW that much credit and it is some petty fight. That sounds about right.
Whatever the case, 90210 is a prime time show that was pirated by AFTRA– so expect about half the pay or less of what SAG scale is if you work on the show with or without Tori.
They should wait ten more years and film the new 90210 in a geriatric facility.
“They should know that trying to squeeze one, especially an entertainment press magnet like Tori Spelling, for less money would just create bad buzz for the show.”
Yes, the viewing public is well known for their sympathy for “actresses” who have gotten a total of, what, 1 job that wasn’t won through nepotism. The point is that it got us talking about this inevitable crapfest, and that’s worth more to them than whatever lack of talent Tori brings to the table.
I love Tori and am very dissappointed that she won’t be on the show. If Jennie signs off then I won’t have to waste my time watching.
When, oh when is Dawn Ostroff going to get axed. Anything would be a better alternative to her sensibilities on programming. She’s reduced an entire network to basic-cable type drivel. Come to think of it, I bet she’d do great on Oxygen.
Hey, Tori’s father, Arron Spelling is DEAD, the only reason her no talent butt even got on the first one (91010) (prior to her nose job and facial work), was DADDDY.
She is a no talent, period, that had a father that doted on her, but, cut her out of his Will, now, even her mother has cut her off of that billion dollar estate.
I mean, let her husband support her (oh wait, he married her/Tori, thinking she/Tori was going to inherit a few hundred million, he left his wife and kids hanging, for Tori’s money), $50,000 a week, to see her face? please, I am going to be sick!
Ostroff is the worst. She pulled out her Gen Y research and baked up another big mess. Meanwhile she dumped well performing sitcoms like”Girlfriends” and “Half & Half.”
90210 will never see a 4.
She should fire her agent.
If pay was based on head size she’d be getting $100,000 per episode.
I think Tori is a beautiful person. She did not received any money from her Dad and she works hard to keep her family together by any means. Her husband on the other hand needs to get out get a job.
The bottom line is Tori Spelling has a face that looks like a cross between a bluefish and an ox.
I have struggled to understand her quest to beam this face into the homes of millions since her guest appearances on Fantasy Island.
Personally I wondered why they even asked Tori back. In my opinion, she is not all that good looking or even a good actress. She really hit her head by thinking that she was even on the same level as Jenny Garth and Shannon Daugherty. Eventhough Shannon Daugherty was fired from both 90210 and Charmed, she is an attention grabber, whether you like her or not. People seem to like the bad girl image.
I think Tori is wonderful. She should get just as much as Jenny & Shannon. Its going to be a big lose for 90210 not to have her. I glad she not going to be on there because this one will never take off like the first one. She is better off!!!
Everyone actor who takes their work seriously should be glad when another actor stands up for what is right for them in business. Better roles come to those who are patient and have the self-respect to ask for what they feel they should get. It doesn’t matter if some exec thinks they are not hot at the moment. You have to believe in yourself to sustain a career. This has been a commercial for the planet earth. Allright go on, bloggers and continue with the kindergarten type comments if it pleases you.
During the “90210″ panel at the TCA Press Tour, producer Gabe Sachs said that, prior to Tori having the baby, “we were E-mailing and brainstorming on stuff…on her
character and I think that when she’s up for it, she’ll
be in. That’s my understanding.”
When asked if she was actually under contract, producer Jeff Judah assured the crowd, “Yeah, we have a deal.”
If memory serves, however, Jeff looked desperately into the crowd for an answer before providing confirmation, so one presumes that a nervous CW exec waved him on, figuring it was as good as done.
Whoops.
if they insist on a 90210 remake or sequel or whatever, they should pay tori spelling as much as the others. she had a major part in the original but really they should skip the whole endeavor and wait for VH1 to have a where are they now of the whole original cast.
The CW are idiots, the viewers of Tori’s show on Oxygen will add to the viewers of CW,if it were not for her dad there would be no 90210. She should have gotten the first call. Tori is “The Business” and some of you haters do not want to give her her props! Handle your business Tori and let the haters HATE ON!
I think it is wrong not to pay everyone from the old cast the same amount of money.
There are NO super stars here..just a big cast of people.
I really love Tori and Dean and their adorable family and I wish them the best.
I think she and Dean are twinfflames (soulmates)..like me and my husband are.
If they don’t pay her the same amount…they are the losers. She would’ve helped the show!
Maybe because Jennie & Shannon still look hot, and Tori looks like a horse?
They should cast Candy Spelling – she could play Jessca Walters’ oldest, dearest friend.
And work in a season long story-line featuring/shooting in her new Century City penthouse as it gets constructed.
Ratings = sky high is what I say.
I will not watch the show if Tori is not on! Tori is the star and not the WHO!!! By popularity standads it should be Tori making twice more than Shannen and Jennie. Tori is now ever mre popular liked and watched! What is wrong with them? Tori, should prove to them her worth! Gives us ONE just one episode a special apperance and watch ratings SOAR!!!
What is wrong with you people who are bashing Tori? A 90210 spinoff wouldn’t be 90210 without Donna Martin!
If they are bringing back Shannen (who left the show in season 5 and was maybe mentioned on the show twice after she left) and Jennie (whose character took a back seat to Tori’s character in the final seasons) then not only should Tori come back with the same salary as the other girls if not more.
Tori really became the heart of the show and I know there are many other 90210 fans who will watch this new show just to see what happened to Donna Martin after she married David in the finale.
Tori is a great actress and a great person and I hope they find a way to work a deal out because this 90210 die hard fan will start boycotting the show if she’s not on it!
A quick reality check for you oblivious Tori Spelling supporters:
—90210 Executive Producer (not creator) Aaron Spelling used his extensive clout to force the network and producers to hire his untalented/surgically altered daughter in a supporting part.
—- Say what you want about Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth but both got their original lead roles on MERIT and they were, along with Jason Priestly and Luke Perry, the real core of 90210. Add to this the PR bonanza of these two former dueling co-stars mixing it up once again and they are each worth about 5 times whatever they offered Tori to do the new series.
I agree that Tori is not very attractive, and she sucks as an actress, and that if not for her father would definitely be in some other kind of work. I can’t believe that people watch her reality show (or ANY reality show, for that matter!) Whatever happened to Gabrielle Carteris? She was about as attractive as Tori, but a better actress. I remember that she seemed much older than the rest of the cast. Is she doing the reunion show? Just wondering, I won’t watch no matter what, I was never really into it besides watching it occasionally with a friend who used to watch who was younger than me. Still, all of this talk about the others made me wonder about her.
I don’t care one way or the other about Tori Spelling, but if Shannon Doherty and Jennie Garth are getting 35-50 thou, then so should Tori. Fair is fair.
As for the CW’s future, why don’t they pin it on something besides a genre that’s proved to be a failure for them? Get rid of Dawn, then try something different like an adult drama, a big comedy, or a Smallville spin-off.
Gimme a break. She is the child of the original series’ producer. Reason enough to leave her out of it.
The cruelty and stupidity of many of these comments is astounding.
People really suck.
How good looking are any of you losers? How would you feel having nasty things said about your face? How is she supposed to do anything about head size? And if there were a surgery to correct head size, you’d rip her for it. And if you thought she were good looking, you’d rip her apart for that.
She doesn’t seem to walk around acting entitled like other children of famous people – Angelina Jolie, etc. Jolie got around people not liking her by shrewdly creating the persona of a humanitarian – tougher to attack an alleged humanitarian. Maybe Tori needs to start demanding an end to world poverty.
Meanwhile, it is nasty of the CW to offer her less money for an ensemble show. The other commenter was probably right that they set her up to say no which is pretty weaselly. They should’ve just privately told her no.
I always used to hate Tori Spelling because she got where she is because of her father. But after her bitch of a mother Candy got Aaron to change his will (leaving Tori only $200,000 and everything else to Candy and Randy) while he was doped up on his deathbed, I can’t help but see Tori as the underdog. Maybe the reason the CW got so cheap with Tori is because she made it clear that she was happy to return whereas, with Shannen for example, they no doubt had to pay more just to get her to say yes. There are times when it’s best not to look so eager (another time and place – buying a home). I still say Tori should do Dancing With the Stars.
she made the show
Tori had to OVERCOME being hired by her dad. She graciously overcame the nasty put-downs and finally did prove herself to me anyway. She had to audition and do a screen test. Her dad Aaron Starr wasn’t stupid! Her character would have had a serious “accident” and never appear on screen again if the first reviews were bad for the show. As to all of you who get off putting others down, make yourself feel important calling people ugly, etc., my grandma always said if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. I update that to say if you don’t have new information to add to these posts, please don’t just pile on with more putdowns. We get it. 90210 was a great ensemble piece and I’m constantly appalled at the games the suits play to save money or get publicity. Grow up, CW!
Why are the women wearing tiny bikinis but the men apparently baggy shorts? Seems to me that America is afraid of men in tight, tiny Speedos. The double standard reeks.
I just turned 58 and a good pal is 21 and we both love Tori and Dean! It’s fun, funny, sweet, and sure, it’s so scripted, but hey, it’s entertaining! I have so much more respect for Tori (no-Tori-ous anyone?) than any other 90210 cast member.
She certainly deserves salary parity with other former 90210 cast members. With her highly-rated show, she deserves more. Isn’t that how Hollywood or any workplace operates?
The woman can laugh at herself by making fun of some very personal yet public incidents, relationships and issues! How many people do you know are willing to do that?
She’s worked hard to do what she does. Sure, I would love to see all the people working behind the scenes to help her keep her life together. No nanny, housekeeper, personal assistant, trainer, co-writer, whatever? So her “reality” show only shows a tiny part of her life. But with or without a staff, she still accomplishes more than most people.
I’m sure she’d be the first to admit she’s not the prettiest nor talented woman around. And she was left out of her father’s will. Instead of being destroyed or bitter by all that, she’s worked with what she has.
Now if she isn’t an inspiration for many women and men, who is? How many of you could do what she’s done with what she has? Get over yourselves.
Who knows, maybe this salary argument is a PR ploy. But it’s rather nasty, and at Tori’s expense.
There’s so much to watch on TV, read, research the net, my own art/photography career, my other businesses, yoga, healthy eating, art shows, movies and friends (online and in person).
Life offers us many options. I can live without 90210. But gimme Tori and Dean!!
(as far as Dean getting a job, per a comment, onscreen he’s a loving, supportive father and husband, and does work. She’s happy, so shut up!)
The more interesting question here is why are many of the former *female* cast members involved…while absolutely none of the *male* ones are…? I wouldn’t say that any of the classic male cast members of 90210 (or Melrose) have had any greater careers than the females overall… Is it ego, or more than that?
Perhaps there is something deeper to comment on here about gender and the industry? Though I’m not sure exactly what…
Dawn should have been gone long time ago, she ran the network into the ground and now is putting all her eggs in one basket. A remake?
Most Remakes do not do well. Bionic Woman last year on NBC was a perfect example, and The New Knight Rider will tank as well. Sure it will premiere big but then erode viewers.
I think they made a big mistake having Tori, she is the one in the tabloids on TV, she is the one who can bring in viewers. Shannen who? Where has she been?
yes to the person who wrote in and said to consider the donna character – not tori. donna did make the show funny. tori was actually good in it – despite the “godfather 3″ Sophia-type slaggin she got at the beginning for being aaron spelling’s daughter. she deserves her share. and shannen er brenda’s whining got old after the first season or so. garth is sweet but…. cumon’. the best character they ever had on 90210 was emily valentine via christine elise. and as for the new crew – who knows. but sexy AnnaLynne McCord kinda ruined the last season of nip/tuck i thought….
OK at first, I thought Tori Spelling sucked…but then I watched the Tori and Dean Inn Love Show and I changed my opinion. She seems actually seems nice and works hard. She got stiffed by her Mom and why is Shannen Doherty even back? SHe has gotten fired by every showshe has worked on. And Jennie Garth, her last gig was Dancing with the Stars and she seemed like a b***** on it. So yes Tori deserves as much as those other two losers.
I’d watch Tori over Shannon Doherty ANY day. If you were a 90210 fan back in the day- you know Donna rocked her part whether you liked her or not. I have no interest if Shannon came back. But to see Donna and Kelly- oh yeah! It’s offensive if she wasn’t offered equal money. I’d say NO too!
Tori still seems to get an unwarranted amount of hate. Yes, she’s a mediocre actress and had a career built on nepotism, but she isn’t the first and she won’t be the last. Hollywood is full of Tori Spellings, at least the girl can make fun of herself.
With that aside, is Dawn Ostroff the same genius responsible for canceling Angel and Veronica Mars? Fry the bitch.
I was under the impression the “Gossip Girl” was a big ratings hit, now I see that it’s just another bomb. Why do the networks keep fluffing the teen viewers when they clearly are not watching TV? The “OC” was another pretend “hit” that was canceled, not that I watch the “CW” or even “UPN”, TV programming truly sucks these days.
I have an 18-yr old daughter who’s never seen 90210 and she adores Tori. I never saw 90210 and I adore Tori. The only reason either of us would watch 90210 is for Tori. So Dawn Ostroff needs to get a clue about the value of the respective players on the show…Tori is it.
wtf is it ?
are they crazy ?
oh my god !
-.-
Gossip Girl was never a ratings hit. The CW press releases called it a “hit,” but it averages between 2 and 3 million viewers a week. That would be a hit on cable, not on network. The CW execs will push the teen girl angle until the network flatlines. You can’t have a “niche” broadcast network. It WON’T WORK.
Shannen Doherty and Jason Priestley’s characters were the core of that show (with their parents.).
They lost sight of the Jennie Garth character after the first few seasons. Tori played her character well in the first few seasons, but then it changed and also took over too much of the show. However, it is puzzling that each returning character wouldn’t be paid equally, unless the others will be working much more.
FOR EVERYBODY THAT IS ENVIOUS OF TORY:
Tory Spelling is very talented. She is a natural. She inherited her father’s charisma. Tory has always been a very important actress on 90210.
Her reality show is liked by millions of people. The show has been very
successful. All the movies that she had made have been very good. She truly has talent.
Tory is a good person, and sharing her story has made her more human. She is very sincere and down to earth. It is not her fault that she was born with fame and wealth. The good thing about it is that she has talent and her father was very proud of her.
Tory does not need the approval of people like you, she has the support of millions of people.
I am sure that day soon Tory, her mother and brother will be a close family.
Ah by the way, I am also sure that her mother will leave her estate to her children and grandchildren.
Be happy for people
Not hiring Tori is a big mistake for Ms. Ostroff and the CW. Tori is the star and producer of the #1 rated show on Oxygen and the author if a #3 book on the NYT Book Review. She is a bigger star than Shannen and good friends in real life with Jennie.
Those that work with Tori say she is a very warm, nice and professional to work with – I don’t plan to tune in without her in the cast.
I was looking forward to watching the 90210 show since Tori Spelling was going to be on it, but now i’m not.
How many people are homeless and could use $10,000 per episode with no complaint?
Me.
Yeah, for all those people who don’t get the recent success of Tori Spelling — many, I think are straight guys (sorry!) — I hope there’s an open-minded producer or two, perusing the board here, who will think about casting Tori (and her husband) in what they do best – light comedy. And for all you nahsayers, watch their show — it’s delightful.
I think the main point about this topic is that Tori reportedly was offered less than others with the same experience and for doing the same job. In any job, that’s just not acceptable. She would have been bringing with her, the same experience to the show that Garth and Doherty would be, in addition to the built in publicity of being a star on a popular reality show on the Oxygen network, as well as an author of a very popular book about her life.
I watched 90210 when it first came on, and lost interest after the first couple of years. I do know, that there was great chemistry between Jennie Garth’s character and Tori’s character. They were wonderful friends. I honestly didn’t care for Shannon’s character after a while, as it seemed that some of Shannon’s own personality started to show through on the screen. (And, it wasn’t pleasant.)
I’ve watched both Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling in other movies since then, and have seen Jennie in “What I Like About You”. It was a fun-loving show, and was good T.V. I’ve also seen “Charmed”, and enjoyed watching after Shannon was no longer part of the ensemble.
My point being, if you’re going to offer three young women parts in a remake of a show they all were a part of, they should each be making equal salaries. Especially important, should be the value each would be bringing to the show, and I feel that Tori’s value would be much more than Shannon’s.
I have watched the Tori and Dean Reality Show, and it is entertaining and allows you to see the kind of person Tori is. She is sweet and kind, and is a loving mother and wife. She has a huge fan base that watches the show, and this demographic would surely follow her to the new “90210″ show.
If they don’t offer her the same salary or more, then the show will suffer without her.
Ok, first some of the comments were kinda harsh, now it just looks as if Tori’s having people plant comments on her behalf.
Yeah, I was thinking Tori seems to have a lot of friends.
fire dawn. then the cw will survive. she doesnt deserve her title get rid of her now. she thinks people would like to watch shows like gossip girl or 90210 no. people like supernatural or smallville. and those shows are not getting promoted at all.
Are you kidding? “Smallville” stinks. It has for years.
I will give 90210 a shot, but only because Gossip Girl won me over and because I like Rob Thomas’s work. I don’t really care if the old cast members are on the new show, but I totally agree that Tori deserves just as much as the other previous cast members. She can laugh at herself and has worked hard on her career since the show.
I think the stupidest thing Dawn Ostroff has done is take full episodes of shows like Gossip Girl offline, as she did last season to get people to watch them on TV. The CW will thrive if they can figure out how to get top dollar for their shows presented online – where many in my demographic (18-34) want to watch them! Also, she never should have gotten rid of Veronica Mars. It rocked.
Obviously, she’s a bit out of touch… but I wonder if a male exec was making these decisions would we have this vitriol and name-calling at all?
Reader, whether it stinks or not, Smallville is the CW’s most watched scripted program. That counts for something.
NY Gal is right on.
A male exec would not draw all this vitriol and name-calling. Even an attractive male exec. Dawn Ostroff has committed the unpardonable sin of being an attractive female in power. Her errors are judged far more harshly and personally.
Men’s fragile egos crumble enough from a powerful female. Add attractive to it, and they freak. It’s quite pathetic.
Everyone knows that Tori got on 90210 because of her Dad. She should feel lucky that they even want her on the show. Besides, doesn’t she have enough money.
Don’t bring back Donna Martin. Spend that money to bring back Screech. Yeah, I know.
Tori Spelling should be given equal pay. She was on the entire run and the series ended with it’s last show centering around her character’s wedding. Uh, duh,but to pay someone more who was fired at the request of the cast after only four seasons. Where are the brains here? There are more story lines open for exploring with Garth & Spelling than there are with Garth & Dougherty. If anything Garth & Spelling should be paid more. Also, Spelling has more of a current presence. Stupd move.
Here is a petiton started by a fan, without knowledge or input personnally or professionlly by Ms. Spelling to give equal pay.

Saying Ms. Spelling has a plant is just plain stupid.
Other actors/actresses can have a large fan base and that is considered popularity. Yet Ms. Spelling’s large fan base is called plants.
Even to those who don’t care for Ms. Spelling, face it, she has a VERY large fan base. And what the CW did was not just plain stuip, it was very bad business.
I have a great deal of respect for tori spelling. After watching her show, i did buy the book. My 18 yo and i both read it and we were delighted and surprised at her insights and ability to understand her screwed up childhood. I think she is fair to her mother for the most part, and i would love to read candy’s book as well, if she writes one.
FYI to you who think she is planting positive comments: I am 48, live in the midwest and have never met tori spelling in my life. I was too old for 90210 in its day, but i did grow up with her dad’s tv series’. All of them.
I record the old episodes and watch them all the time. I’m just about to be at the series finale where donna and david get married…. I would love to see what happened to the married couple. Also i want to know the results of dylan and kelly or if brandon ever came back. I would watch it everyday of the week. Dont forget the people who gave you the idea for the show. You wouldn’t be making a remake of it if they didnt do it right the first time. Let the old memebers come back
tori spelling, is awesome and its the shows loss for not having her. she should be paid more than both of them..
i cant belive the cw decied not to get tori show! and that they would think its okay to pay shannon and jennie more than tori! she has a hit reality tv show and people love her i personally wont watch 90210 unless they get tori!
I agree with a few of the others. The show is not going to be worth watching if Tori isn’t paid enough to join the cast.
She was one of the main characters and still is. Of all the other 90210 original cast members, she is about the only who’s movies I actually enjoyed, except for Brian Green’s and he is not coming back.
Shannon, forget her. Jennie, she is ok too, but you can’t forget miss 90210. With who her dad was, she was what the world saw as Beverly Hills, plain and simple.
Good for Tori, for holding out on the money. She is worth it, if any of you have ever watched her reality shows. She is actually very humble and down to earth…
Tori should hold out! Her career, book, and show is all doing well. They would be crazy not to put out the money for her. I think more people would watch with her on 90210 and help ratings.
I think that the network is making a HUGE mistake. I grew up with 90210. I was in high school when they were, I graduated the year they “graduated”. And although I outgrew them long before the show ended, the nostalgia of show remains. When I heard about the new show, I was.. curious. When I heard “Kelly” and “Donna” where going to be involved, I felt the show had more of a chance. I was looking forward to at least the premier. But to slight Tori like this is a total slap in the face. I would have refused also. She doesn’t NEED this show, but having a few original characters involved, even on the periphery, could very well be what the new 90210 needs to pull in the 30-34 portion of their targeted audience.
Garth and Doherty have much more extensive resumes, so they should command higher salaries. Garth had a successful sitcom that ran for years after the original 90210 and Doherty has starred in several movies and a couple of successful shows. What has Tori done? She has gotten, married, divorced, re-married, had two babies, written a book trashing her mom and starred in reality tv garbage. She should be thrilled they were even willing to write her into the new show.
Not for nothing but I do totally agree with Jules. Regardless of how many people feel and if they remember Tori’s character Donna didn’t start to become popular until the show was on for the better part of its long run. Tori got to where she is not because she has talent but because she was “blessed” with the privilege of being born into the Spelling family without her father and not to speak ill of the dead, she would be a nobody. As for Shannen of whom I am a die-hard fan she has consistently delivered both on the original 90210 and on Charmed, when by the way she wanted a cast member gone for doing the same things she got fired from 90210 for doing. She and Jennie Garth are both solid actresses who have shown time and again that they can deliver not just in made for TV movies and reality shows but on network television as the female lead. Like or not Jennie and Shannen supply the higher quality product and therefore the higher pay.
Tori Get over yourself and your ego!!!!
I turned in to see shannon Doherty.
what a small part and one had to wait till the end of the show……I always liked her on and off Tv.
She seems like a strong person who doesn’t go along with the pack. I plan on watching the show until she is written out then-forget it….
As far as Tori she should have taken the lower pay and got her husband a job on there….If she was a hit with the viewers she could have asked for more…
With or without her on the show I will keep watching, I love it.
If I were here I would be pissed too, after all her father created the show.
Bring back the old cast members, the show definitely needs it! The only reason I tune in is to see what’s going on with the old characters, there are no shows for 30 somethings out there since friends went off, they would have been better off basing the new show exclusively on the old cast!!
i think tori should be on the show, she should have the most respect from them, wheder she was good or not, bicouse of her father, that wos hi’s show.Even if i don’t like her much. She is ok’i gues.
To me…there is nothing like the “Original” 90210 cast. I loved the characters of “Brandon” and “Brenda”.
Then when they started interacting with the others,Kelly,Donna,Andrea,David,Steve and Dylan…it got better and better as the show went on. I watch it all the time till this day and never get sick of it. To me…this is better than any remake. The original 90210 is better than this one they have now. Sorry but that is just my opinion.
looks like she is very happy now
well for one , they more than likely didnt want Tori to Whine about not being able to get along with S.D. , and two. it is Easy to say pay tori as much as S.D. and J.G. when the money isnt pulled from YOUR pockets, T.S. was never my favorite on the 90210 the 1st time around , she was flat with not much in the line of people charm , if Not for daddy i doubt she would have made the show. The Tori & Dean show ,a few halfwit teeny boppers who are impressed with her do NOT impress me , if you dont like the new 90210 dont watch it , for myself , they should bring B. Walsh and D. McKay those two would put some life into the show , but again , whatever floats there boats , i think anything over 10k per episode is overpay for Spelling if ya think she should get more , walk around with a cup n collect it to pay your darling T.S.
