Last night's not-so-peaceful summit between David Letterman and John McCain was seen by 6.5 million viewers, and received a 1.7 rating in the adult demo. That's the largest audience for the show since December 2005 when Oprah Winfrey appeared. The Late Show topped Leno's Tonight Show (4.6 million viewers) by 43% even though (or because) Jay had on Democratic VP candidate Joe Biden. Meanwhile, McCain confirmed that Sarah Palin will appear on SNL.

I really hope that McCain is somehow wrong about Palin’s appearance on SNL, or that those plans fall through. Don’t get me wrong…I understand the benefits of a Palin appearance in terms of buzz and ratings for the show, especially since she’s been their main buzz-magnet for the last few weeks, but their portrayal of her hasn’t been the kind that would seem to condone her showing up next to Fey. Especially considering that Fey has been very publicly hateful towards the VP candidate…going so far as to say she would leave the planet if Palin was in the White House…I would think that a Palin appearance would deflate any future shots the show could take at her, because then she would be “laughing along with them” rather than just be the distant (and deserving) target of their attacks.
I love you SNL. I will continue to love you. You don’t need the real Palin when you already have one that people prefer.
Why does it take a late night talk show host to ask tough, pointed questions that one might expect to come from an alert journalist?
For all the armchair talk show hosts who like to bash Letterman because of this or that or his politics, you have to admit that Dave’s perspective and grasp of issues were on display last night. And that they are far more grounded in reality than John McCain or any of the “liberal media” squawkers who get the rare chance to ask him a question.
Six million and four millions viewers? Those are some piss poor numbers. Can anyone tell me why exactly Letterman and Leno get paid the big bucks? If those two shows aired in primetime with those numbers, they’d be canceled after one episode. What a disgrace.
Imagine the ratings if McCain comes through on this quasi-non-promise.
“Fey has been very publicly hateful towards the VP candidate…going so far as to say she would leave the planet if Palin was in the White House”
That’s not hateful. That’s humor mixed with common sense. “He pals around with domestic terrorists, he’s not like us, he has a different view of America than us…” those more resemble hatefulness.
Lost amidst all of this late night ballyhoo, is how painfully bad Jimmy Kimmel Live has become. It’s excruciating to even see promos for his show and even harder to bear that sleepy, pear-shaped, schlub hawking a fine product such as DirecTV. Please, for the love of my children, remove this detritus from America’s airwaves.
As for Palin appearing on SNL, fun to look at, but it’s much ado about nothing for her already dead ticket. A bonafide non-event, politically. Just sit back and enjoy one of her last TV appearances, hopefully for a long, long time. (Well, at least until she’s prosecuted for shooting and gutting an eagle or a manatee or some shit).
Did I mention Jimmy Kimmel Live sucks boogers?
It’s not hateful when it’s true, Jenius.
What is hateful is “joking” that a woman’s husband is fucking their daughter. No wonder SNL is nothing but a shadow of its former self. That humorless show should have been cancelled 20 years ago (which is when it stopped being amusing to those of us who don’t choke on our own spit).
